My friends at MM made me this clip. I didn't have a chance to make it, but it's shocking. And Newt Gingrich wants to run for president ladies and gentlemen. This is an issue that America isknown for. It's called "FREEDOM." And it should be fought vigorously. Freedoms have never come easy in America. Women couldn't even vote until the 1920's and we all know about the civil rights movement.

On the November 14 edition of Fox News' The O'Reilly Factor, in reference to actions by individual protesters of Proposition 8, the recently passed California ballot initiative amending the state constitution to ban same-sex marriage, Fox News contributor Newt Gingrich stated
O'REILLY: OK, now, the culture war. I know you've been flying around the country, and you're doing stuff. In the last three or four days, this is really nasty stuff. I mean, you know, hyper -- we're gonna show you some of the video. A woman getting a cross smashed out of her hand. We had a church in Michigan invaded by gay activists. We're gonna show you the video on Monday of that -- we have exclusively. We had a guy in Sacramento fired from his job. We had boycotts called on restaurants.
I mean, it is getting out of control, very few days after the election. How do you assess that?
GINGRICH: Look, I think there is a gay and secular fascism in this country that wants to impose its will on the rest of us, is prepared to use violence, to use harassment. I think it is prepared to use the government if it can get control of it. I think that it is a very dangerous threat to anybody who believes in traditional religion. And I think if you believe in historic Christianity, you have to confront the fact. And, frank -- for that matter, if you believe in the historic version of Islam or the historic version of Judaism, you have to confront the reality that these secular extremists are determined to impose on you acceptance of a series of values that are antithetical, they're the opposite, of what you're taught in Sunday school.
Gingrich thinks gay marriage is a very dangerous threat to traditional religion. Can he tell me how they are dangerous? Just because he doesn't believe in it doesn't mean it will hurt anyone. This is ignorance. The right needs an issue to motivate their base, but this lack of freedom for the gay community actually hurts their lives on a daily basis where as in the religious community it hurts no one. Are they honestly afraid that their kids will go gay or something? I know what James Dobson thinks:
They want to destroy the institution of marriage. It will destroy marriage. It will destroy the Earth."
That is pure lunacy as we know. All gays want to do is part of that institution and have the same rights as all Americans do.

In its best light, his argument is that freedom for gay or secular people is oppression for him. Zero-sum. That's the best light, and it's ridiculous.
In its more appropriate light, he's just projecting. He's scared that people he likes to persecute will start persecuting him. If these schmucks were genuinely concerned about equal freedom, they would say to the human rights advocates, "Okay, you can have gay marriage, but can we just make sure that there's nothing in the law that says my religion has to recognize your marriage? Will you agree not to force anything on me?" And people on our side would instantly agree (wondering what they're really concerned about in the first place), and the whole argument would be over.
Instead, though, they have to act like they're the ones suffering.

He didn't quite say it so bluntly, but that was the thrust of it. Which says something about why he's so frightened of a gay, secular fascism. He probably can't conceive of a group genuinely striving for equal freedom. In his mind. those who want power necessarily want to make everyone else just like them.
Reminds me of the time Bill-O accused liberals of being out to tear down the white Christian male power structure. It's all about the fear and anger of priviliged people who feel that they're being pushed aside from their "rightful place" at the top of society. And yes, it's also a fear that marginalized people will look for payback. (Have these guys like Bill-O and Newtie ever considered that maybe white Christian males should treat other people a little better?)
You are so right about the zero-sum mentality; this whole attitude that if "those people" have rights, "we" will lose something. I also have a real problem with the attitude that if marginalized people (gays, secular people, women, minorities) fight for equal rights, they're "demanding special rights." Gay marriage is not a "special right".
You'd think conservatives would be in favor. The way I figure it, the term "gay lifestyle" tends to be associated with promiscuity, so if some gay couples are in a committed enough relationship that they want to get married, don't freakin' complain!
And what's with this assumption that gays, secular people and other evil liberals are "imposing" their values just by being open about who they are? No one's advocating forcing everyone to be gay, or passing laws forcing churches to shut down. America still has freedom of religion, and that doesn't just mean having a choice of different Christian denominations. In fact, the Constitution doesn't say anything about having to have any religion.
BTW, I was raised without religion because my parents weren't religious, and they felt that taking the kids to church when they didn't believe in it themselves was unfair to the people who do believe. (This was the 1960s.) My Mom took a lot of flak from well-meaning people who thought that kids raised without religion wouldn't learn right from wrong. Well, my brother, sister and I turned out okay. None of us grew up to be sociopaths, serial killers, child molesters, or career criminals. So I get really peeved by these religious right guys who try to demonize non-Christians.

I seem to think that many people these days think blacks started voting right after the Civil War ended, and women maybe around the same time.
Blacks were granted the right to vote after the end of the Civil War, but Reconstruction was finally snuffed out by Rutherford B. Hayes after being started by Andrew Johnson, and ignored by Grant (Hayes acting largely at the behest of others, as his election win was by "appointment" of an election commission, this the result of a razor thin margin of votes too close to call) So black would be denied, in a variety of different ways, the unrestricted right to vote for almost another CENTURY in many parts of the south. It took women even longer, less than a century ago, before they had the right to even voice their political opinion as a voter.
No rights must be given away, no more Patriot Acts, no more voter intimidation, and no more rightwing, conservative/fascist nutjobs in the White House, who pose the only real threat to Democracy and freedom.

I think of a threat as something that says "we will prevent you from doing X" or "we will discriminate against you (job, housing, healthcare) if you do X". Gay marriage is an alternative to traditional religion but in no way is it a threat. I think you should be careful before too quickly adopting the vocabulary that the opposition uses.

I've been trying to figure this one out for a while. How is gay marriage a threat to traditional (my) religion? No one is forcing me to do anything contrary to my beliefs, nor is anyone who attends my church threatened in their beliefs. So why does it matter? We do our thing and if gays want to marry, fine.
My church doesn't recognize christmas or easter. There was a declaration passed (house or senate, can't remember which) about a year ago which contained a declaration that claimed the US was a Christian nation and this rested, in part, on our observation of these holidays. I was alarmed at this when I read it here at C&L because I believe in total separation of church and state but I'm not going to panic. No one is making me put up a christmas tree yet.
Newt needs to chill and take his meds. Why is he so concerned anyway? I've never seen him declare publicly which church HE attends.

Anyway, wouldn't it be great if the whole world could interact the way we do? Leave your religion (or atheism) to your personal life and not see every opposing point of view as a threat to your very being?

I'm gay and I married my husband here in California on November 3, one day before Election Day. And damn if I'm not glad that I did.
Newt Gingrich is a lying sack of shit. He said that we will "use violence and harassment" to get what we want. He said that we're "secular extremists" and "radicals." All we are asking for is the same right as everyone else, a right that was affirmed by our state Supreme Court, and then unlawfully stripped away. It is not un-American to petition the courts for these rights, as we're now forced to do because the haters were able to convince a slim majority that we're second-class citizens.
Bill O'Reilly is the pieces of feces that stick to the sides of the toilet and under the rim that have to be scrubbed off. And a stupid liar too. He said that a guy "got fired" from his job in Sacramento. What happened was that the Artistic Director of the California Musical Theatre, Scott Eckern, donated $1000 to the Yes on 8 campaign. People were outraged that someone who works so closely with gay people could do such a thing. Mr. Eckern was surprised how strong the reaction was against him. He was not fired, nor was he forced to resign his job. He resigned voluntarily, and made an equal contribution to the gay rights organization Human Rights Campaign to "help offset any damage that he did." (His sister is a lesbian who is in a long-term relationship.)
I strongly urge all Americans who believe in justice for all -- this means YOU!! -- to join the fight against Prop. 8, regardless of your sexual orientation or the state you live in. Congratulations. I hope the two of you live long and happy lives together. But I'm curious, under the new ban on gay marriage, what if the two of you were to divorce. How would that be handled?
Of course, I wouldn't dream of divorcing him -- we've been together for over eleven years, so we're definitely already an "old married couple." And it's really unclear as to the status of our marriage in the first place. Jerry Brown, our state Attorney General, says that the marriages that took place between May and November are valid, but some question that. In any case, the state Supreme Court has been petitioned by several groups and individuals asking for the overturn of Prop. 8. I think that the court will act swiftly, because there's too much confusion out there about what to do, but also the matter is so pressing and basic (i.e., constitutional rights) that it needs to be resolved promptly. Hopefully, they will annul the proposition entirely.
They have to - they really DON'T have a choice.
And most of America will celebrate when it happens.

Why is it i n the days of the internet, cell phones, massive global recording devices, etc, that people can spout of this kind of BS and it later doesn't get thrown back in their faces? And even when it does, it's just denied, even when there is recorded proof? This has been going on far too long. Gay people have tried and tried to put an end to this crap, but as a fairly marginal group, we can only do so much. I'd like to see louder and more open support from groups that this sort of bigotry does NOT affect. I mean, I support a woman's right to choose, even though that issue will NEVER affect me personally. I see support around the internet, but that's just anonymous postings. I suppose maybe we are seeing a groundswell beginning, I just wish it had happened a lot earlier and a lot less people had to suffer.
We can't fight alone. We need the help of fair-minded, enlightened people to speak out on our behalf too. As an oppressed minority, we know how easy it is for discrimination, however subtle, to occur. We hear, almost daily, the phrase, "That's so gay." Until others begin to see us as people, until we're no longer invisible, we will never achieve full equality. So we have to just keep fighting and putting ourselves out there. Perhaps this whole Prop. 8 thing, where rights were actually taken away from us (as opposed to states that passed a constitutional ban against same-sex marriage, when the rights never explicitly existed in the first place) is the watershed event we need for our cause.

You guys are writing comments as if Newt actually meant what he said. I can't tell you what is truly in this man's heart, but I find it difficult to believe he's actually worried about "gay & secular fascism" (it's hard to even write that without laughing).
I'm not as sure about O'Reilly, but "Newton," the former college professor, has spent his entire career using words as a means of division. Remember his GOPAC memo? It was called "Language: A Key Mechanism of Control." It boiled down to always framing conservative positions in the highest most patriotic and positive terms possible while using what I believe he referred to as "contrasting" words to refer to the positions of his opponents.
"Fascism" is just a word of "contrast." It's a way to control the true believers who out of fear and ignorance actually think giving rights to people different from themselves hurts them in some way they can never actually describe except in the broadest of terms. ("It will destroy the institution of marriage as we know it." "We don't let pedophiles marry children." etc.)
Do you remember those stories of people in the Bush Administration laughing behind the backs of committed Christian activists? True believers, to many of these guys, are just a bunch of rubes to be manipulated. That's all Newt's doing here, trying to manipulate the easily led to increase his personal power and that's how you should be attacking him.
The weird thing to me is that Newt seems to understand on one level that these tactics are failing. Prop 8 barely passed this time whereas before, the similar proposal passed easily. Abortion restrictions did not pass even in "Red" South Dakota. Obama won easily and people are widely accepting of progressive positions. The history-professor Newt sees these things and understands that Republicans need to change tactics, but the Contract with America Newt can't seem to put these tactics to bed. They worked so well before.
The thing was, disagree with it or not, the Contract with America was a series of ideas that seemed to have core principles. Attacking Americans as fascists because they simply want the same rights as everybody else indicates to me that he's run out of ideas. All he's got left is "contrast."

They just want a hot-button issue to rally the hostile masses and feed their bloodlust. I've seen the effect rhetoric like this has on right-leaning coworkers - it makes them seethe with rage, violent rage that causes them to slam things around and hurl epithets at people as though daring them to say anything. I've seen it work on both poorly educated and well educated right-wingers. It's very dangerous.

Here is the reason I don't understand the legality of Prop 8 and all other amendments thereof that restrist gay marriage:

Basically, the story notes that our dear friends at FOTF are laying off a lot of workers just weeks after giving $500,000 in support of P8. I won't say it's causal (more likely its fewer wingnuts and less disposable income all around), but the irony is deeeeeeep. And it was all wasted money since the courts will overturn P8 anyway!
