Judd Gregg just had a meltdown on MSNBC that came out of nowhere. He's been attacking everything Obama, almost from the minute he turned down a Cabinet post offer from the White House, but his performance today was really weird. The conversation was about spending and, as usual, Gregg was acting like the incredible deficit freak that he is.

Melissa Francis is a CNBC talker who believes just like he does, and for some reason he mistook her for a dirty f*&king hippy and claimed she was setting him up as a man who wants to cut all spending on education. In fact, the only thing people like him and Ron Paul believe will work for America is to cut all government spending and federal programs and then just give tax cuts to the rich.

Then, Contessa Brewer brought up the fact that many economists think that when FDR became a deficit hawk so soon after expanding spending that he helped stop the country's economic growth. She asked him if he thought money from education should be cut, he went off and called them liars.

Gregg: First off, nobody is saying no money for schools, what an absurd statement to make. And what a dishonest statement to make. On its face you're being fundamentally dishonest when you make that type of statement.

Brewer: Senator, you're going to be asked to cut certain programs from government if you're on the Senate banking committee. Which programs -- just tell us -- would you cut?

--

Gregg: And then it gets misrepresented by people like yourself who say they are going to, if you do any of this stuff you're going to end up not funding education. I mean that statement alone is the most irresponsible statement I've heard from a reporter probably in a month.

Brewer: It wasn't a statement, it was a question.

Gregg deliberately misconstrued what they said, and the conversation went downhill from there. Gregg acted like a typical conservative bully around women, and if they were both men he would not have tried to call them liars. Meanwhile, Contessa ended the interview very professionally. He owes Brewer and Francis an apology for his behavior.

And Digby explains why the question about cutting education is based in reality.

I'll let Gregg's tantrum stand on it's own. But I would just point out that it's not absurd in the least to ask if Republicans would cut education. Indeed, it's absurd to suggest otherwise:

President Ronald Reagan promised during the 1980 presidential election to eliminate the Department of Education as a cabinet post,[1] but he was not able to do so with a Democratic House of Representatives. In the 1982 State of the Union Address, he pledged:

The budget plan I submit to you on Feb. 8 will realize major savings by dismantling the Department of Education.[2]

Throughout the 1980s, the abolition of the Department of Education was a part of the Republican Party platform, but the administration of President George H. W. Bush declined to implement this idea.

So, not only was Brewer right to ask whether Gregg planned to cut education as part of a deficit reduction plan, there has been a very longstanding belief among conservatives that they should not be funding education at all.

If there was anyone at fault for spreading misinformation and lies on television it's Gregg with his irresponsible deficit fearmongering and Hooverite prescriptions for the economy. God help us if he and his ilk actually get their way.

And you can't help but scratch your head when you think that a year ago, when everyone knew that the economy was in deep trouble and would need a lot of stimulus, the administration actually named this guy to be Commerce Secretary, a department which Gregg had voted to eliminate as well. That tells you a lot about their judgment at the time.

Digby wrote up the full transcript:

Contessa Brewer: Let's bring in now Republican Judd Gregg a senator of New Hampshire, a top Republican on the budget committee and a ranking member of the Senate banking committee. What do you think about the money the president is preparing to spend on jobs and what Mark was just saying, that it has to go hand in hand with other programs, job training, professional skill and certainly educating very young people?

Judd Gregg: Well we're running a 1.3 trillion dollar deficit this year. The government is going to spend over three trillion dollars. All of that deficit goes into the debt which will be paid by our children and our children's children. I think somebody's going to have to ask a more fundamental question. How are you going to get the economy going if you run up the debt to the point where we can't afford our government? Uh, that is a much more fundamental question.

If you want to do something to energize this economy, I think you put in place some plans that control the rate of growth of government so that people can have confidence that this nation is not going to go into some form of fiscal bankruptcy in five to seven years. And that will cause people to be willing to invest and be willing to take risks and create jobs. Jobs are not created by the government. You know long term, good jobs are created by a vibrant economy and you don't get a vibrant economy when the government and the size of the government and the debt of the government is overwhelming the capacity of the economy to function right.

Francis: That's good in theory Senator ...

Gregg: That's not theory! It's not theory! Don't tell me it's theory!

Francis: tell me how to put it to work ...

Gregg: No you don't tell me it's theory. What are you... How do you get off saying something like that?

Francis: (who is a conservative by the way) Because it is good in theory. Of course, it's fantastic. Here's your opportunity senator... let me finish .. to tell us all how it would be put to work. I'm all for small government.

Gregg: You stop the spending spree. You stop the government from growing so fast that you can't afford to pay for it. You don't increase the size of government from 20% of GDP to 25% of GDP in two years. You don't add a trillion dollars of new debt to our kids back every year for the next ten years. You don't pass a budget... the president doesn't send up a budget that double the debt in five years, triples it in ten years! You don't say that you're for fiscal responsibility and then propose a whole panoply of new programs that you can't pay for. That's not theory, that's reality! That's what we're facing as a nation. This is the reality of a fiscal meltdown of our country which is going to have a massive impact on people's lives and cost a lot of jobs in this country.

Contessa Brewer: So my partner Melissa, Senator Greg, is really asking for specifics. If you don't believe that we should have a 1.3 trillion dollar budget, which programs are you willing to cut. Are you willing to tell schools, no money for you? And do you side then with those who say, when you look back at the great depression, economists say that we landed back into real problems in 1937 when people got onto cutting the deficit and a lot of government spending was pulled back before it should have been?

Gregg: Well first off, nobody is saying no money for schools. What an absurd statement to make. What a dishonest statement to make. On its face you are being fundamentally dishonest when you make that type of statement.

Brewer: We're just asking which programs you would cut

Francis: tell us what to cut...

Gregg: Do you know how much money is spent on education in the federal government this year?

Brewer: Senator, you're going to be asked to cut certain programs if you're on the Senate banking committee. Which programs would you want to cut?

Gregg: Oh I have no problems telling you. I would freeze discretionary spending. A real freeze, not a freeze plus inflation. I would eliminate the TARP money which would get us close to 400 billion dollars. I would end the stimulus spending effective in June of this year, if not sooner, so we can recover all the money that's going to be spent outside the window of this recession and we shouldn't be spending it adding it to the debt. I would take a major effort to try to reform our entitlement programs. In fact we had a major vote yesterday to try to do that under a bill which I've proposed with Senator Conrad.

So I've made some very specific proposals and I'm willing to stand by them. The problem is that this administration's view of governance is that economic prosperity is created by growing the government dramatically and then it gets misrepresented by people like yourself who are saying that if you do any of this stuff you are going to end up not funding education. That statement alone is the most irresponsible statement I've heard probably in a month.

Brewer: it wasn't a statement, it was a question...

Gregg: And there are a lot of irresponsible statements made by reporters and that was the most irresponsible I've heard.

Francis: Senator, with respect, that's not what she said, she was asking you what you would like to cut ..

Gregg: =That's exactly what she said! Go back and read your transcript.

Brewer: thank you for your time, Senator ...

Gregg: You can't be duplicitous about this! You can't make a representation and then claim you didn't make it. You've got to have some integrity on your side of this camera too.

Francis: She asked you what you would like to cut, she asked you if you would cut schools. You said no.

Gregg: You're suggesting we should have a zero in education. Well of course, nobody's suggesting that. Nobody's even implying that. But in your introduction to me you said that. That education funding would be cut. Well, education funding isn't going to be cut.

Brewer: Well Senator, I'm sorry for any communication problems that we've had, but as always, we appreciate your time ...

This bull sh*t comparison to the 1930's and subsequent argument being made that deficit spending is the way out of an this economic downturn horrifically precludes we are $12 trillion in debt.

The US DID NOT have a $12,000,000,000,000,000 national debt in the 1930's. Ponder that fact for a few moments. When you have maxed out your credit cards and can barely keep up with the minimum payments, you don't go get more of them.

Interest Expense on the Debt Outstanding
http://www.treasurydirect.gov/govt/reports/ir...

The interest will the kill economy very soon. Why? Because our deficit spending is on the tail end of an exponential growth curve. Our annual interest payments alone almost equal the amount allocated to our national defense in the annual budget each year.

Goodnight, Frau Blücher

There is a Russian proverb appropriate to this: "Having said A, you must say B." Having spent so much on arms, America needs a war, a real war, not some pointless money losing adventure in the middle east or some proxy engagement in southeast Asia. As for the "War on Terror" that is a complete joke, fear and intimidation (as evidenced by politically timed and motivated color-coded terror alerts) being their own weapon for social control. So you need a real war. Problem is the big players have opted out. Russia "lost" the cold war in the late 80's and has shown no eagerness to play. China (despite the Fox News vilification of supposedly communist politicos domestically) has fatted America by subsidizing America's trade deficit. Europe is enjoying its peace dividend. What's left? South America? Mexico? Canada? Divide America and fight amongst yourselves? The quagmire is not in Afghanistan or in Iraq. It is in America.

Gregg was NOT 100&. But that's a subject for another debate. I didn't read anything from Gregg when Cheney famously and arrogantly spewed, "Reagan showed us that deficits don't matter." I guess Republican deficits don't matter but a monster deficit inherited by Democrats surely does matter?

My question is, "What put him on the hair trigger?" Pols are usually pretty good about being nonplussed by questions, but Gregg went all Bill O'Reilly on these two. It was either political theater or something else is on his mind.

My money is on the "something else" part. I've seen him interviewed before and he's usually pretty calm and collected. But he went all bat shit on the two ladies and it seemed that he showed up in a huff.

schultzbk's picture

This guy was itching for a fight from the start! He was nit-picking any question they asked and then quickly tried to change the topic away from the fact that he glossed over his answer to which programs he would cut. "I've offered some proposals and I stand by those proposals" is NOT an answer. Saying that he will cut stimulus spending is not an answer (it will end anyway). Saying he will cut TARP money is not an answer (that program is also coming to an end, and let's also convenienty forget that it was proposed under the previous admin).

How about this: I propose to end the war in Iraq because it will save us $___ each year. I propose to end the war in Afghanistan because it would save us $____ each year. I propose to end all no-bid contracts with para-military groups providing security at our embassies abroad and re-assign those duties to our not-for-profit military. I propose to end No Child Left Behind because it was never funded at the levels promised, and it's only been successful at enriching test manufacturers and charter school entrepreneurs (who are often not subject to the NCLB requirements). I propose to cut all farm subsidies that benefit multinational corporate farm cooperatives (and giving us high fructose corn syrup in return). I propose to cut all military spending on antiquated or way-over-budget systems.

And that's just off the top of my head.

This exchange is so instructive.
The GOP and the Conservative movement as a whole, have come as close as anyone ever has to sailing the American economy over the edge.
For the last year they have refused to lift a finger in assisting the President in carrying out the will of the American people who voted him into office with a large majority and mandate for change.
In that time Obama has literally bent over backwards to engage these "patriots" all to utterly no avail. The GOP has done naught but score cheap underhanded political points while people lost their houses and jobs and yes,"hope".
Now a year later right on schedule,we have Judd Greg bristling with arrogant impatience and barely checked partisan hate condescendingly "instructing" these two "women" (which given the strong support of women for Liberalism is perfect)on how to cure the ills of the economy. You see, only Republican MEN can muster the strength and vision to deal with the "reality" of market.Sure "women" (and Democratic men-same thing)have their useful little causes and abilities, but in times like these, you must let the grownups handle things.
I believe this is the basic psychology at work in American politics, and it is a script that seems to play over and over again always predictably undermining Democratic confidence in it's own mission statements.Gregg is simply playing the role he's expected to play.

"To me, truth is not some vague, foggy notion. Truth is real. And,
at the same time, unreal. Fiction and fact and everything in between,

-Jack Handy

In the Senate Gregg was the leading Republican negotiator and author of the TARP program, which bailed out financial institutions, while he had a multi-million dollar investment in the Bank of America.

In February 2009, the Associated Press reported that Gregg and his family profited personally from federal earmarks steered by the senator for the redevelopment of a closed Air Force base.

He's been in the Senate since 2003, and despite claiming to be all about fiscal responsibility had no problem with GWB's spending and tax cuts that put us in this huge deficit hole.

And now he's worried about spending??? Puh-leez.

Back in the early 1980s, Piven and Cloward wrote a book titled "The New Class War." In this book, they accuse the Reagan administration of running up historical levels of debt DELIBERATELY so they could claim, like Gregg is doing, that "the government can't afford these social programs."

Piven and Cloward were right. Notice how these Republican assholes suddenly "come to Jesus" regarding deficits when the Democrats control Congress? Where were they during the past eight friggin' years when trillions in debt were rung up under the Bush administration?

The fact is Republicans aren't against deficit spending in principle. The historical record shows that. They are only against deficit spending on programs they don't like.

Yes and not a dime to be taken from the wars or homeland security, because they fabricated a war on terror and anyone who touches this cash cow is a coward.

So convenient for these assholes.

The people of privilege will always risk their complete destruction rather than surrender any material part of their advantage." J.K. Galbraith

Gregg said he would stop the stimulus spending right now. Is he oblivious of history? During the last depression when measures were taken to pay down the deficit, the economy tanked again. Does he not know that? Has he not bothered to listen to any economists recount that fact? Or does he simply not care about it because he's so blinded to the truth by his crippling partisanship. He is all upset and haughty and treats these 2 television news anchors like they know nothing when they are asking him what he would do. Republicans, Gregg included, presided over the worst economic disaster in this country's history and what they want to do to correct it would plunge us back over the cliff. Republicans prove, on this point, that they are absolutely the worst managers of the economy possible. My suggestion for Gregg is that if he agrees to speak on television, that he should not treat his interviewers with condescension and derision as he did in this interview. It doesn't look good when a Senator who thinks he's got the right ideas but who is so wrong and history has already proven the point, to act superior to people who want him to explain himself and to be part of a problem-solving solution to the many problems our country faces. I hope next time New Hampshire gets a chance to either vote or not vote for Judd Gregg, they will opt for not voting for him. He ignores history and sides with the side that has the ideas that got us into the problems that we are now having to fix. He has shown that he is incapable of helping to solve problems but that he is willing to have them continue or even get worse.

According to wiki, it seems he has decided not to run again.

This was about one thing and one thing only, this was about the right trying to bully MSNBC anchors and get them in line with the rest of the media. They called him on his bullshit talk about cutting spending, something Republicans never do when they are office. Republicans are famous for this fantasy land talk. The only station that holds them accountable for their lying and misleading the public is in their sights. They want to cowtow MSNBC so that they become CNN. They don't necessarily want them to become Fox, they just want them weak and impotent like the CNN crew. This allows them to go on tv and sell their bullshit. They always talk about cutting taxes and spending, and what happens when they get into office, they cut taxes and increase spending, mostly military spending, leading to huge deficits and debt. It's rich to watch them try to hang this deficit and debt on Obama. Between the two Bush's and Reagan, they almost entirely make up the $12tril. national debt. We all know the story about the surplus handed to Bush, only to have him leave office with an annual deficit of $1.2tril., a $1.4til. dollar turnaround. Since they have sold this same song and dance before, and they are being called on it, they throw temper tantrums, because they are not being allowed to sell their snakeoil.

For those people who believe in "small government" you'd better damn well come up with a population control policy. Because as long as you have conservatives encouraging procreation, there are going to be more kids needing educating, healthcare, and parents needing income and wealth to take care of them. We have seen what the priorities of the corporations and wealthy are, and that is to keep all of the money at the top of the ladder and leave poor, working, and middle class people to fend for themselves. So unless the small government types are ready for a country of millions of hungry and homeless people, they'd better come up with a better way to meet those needs. You can't continue to add more people to a society, continually cut government spending, and then say we are going to let them loose, illiterate and poor.

Keeping the huddled masses armed, hungry, afraid, and in conflict with each other jibes with their ideas of social management. This is why the second amendment is so valuable to them. It gives their base the illusion of power to check the tyranny of government when in reality government forces will always be exponentially better armed than they and the only real effect of their base being armed is to intimidate the other side's base.

Oddly enough, it's an I'm right, your wrong society.

I'd go on, but I'm not good at describing things concisely. Big government is one thing... waste is another. Therein lies the dilemma... you may have noticed it in the Health-care reform circus? There is a large group of people who don't want their money spent a certain way, especially if it's deemed evil!

It's a liberty, creator, sovereign thing. In my opinion, we spend way to much defending a mysticism... but it makes people feel better. And you can always teach at home. :-/

Ron Paul... around (2:30 of 13:42) on the Dept. of ed. / waste is one thing education is another... Lots of middlemen/women getting a piece of the pie, how much, who knows?

I'm not afraid of hell... but I understand the concern.

I wonder what the GOP promised him to turn down the cabinet position? Or did they threaten to expose some skeleton in his closet during the confirmation hearings?

I guess we need more military? I thought gregg was one that increased the debt ceiling what three times while bush was the dictator?
You can't make a statement and then pretend you didn't make it?
How many times do we have republicans on tape making statements that they then swear they didn't make?
republicanism/conservatism is a mental illness!

Notice how these thugs never reveal unto us peasants what they would actually do, but will go on and on about "what you don't do," meaning Democrats.

Well, Senator, you've told us what you wouldn't do. Now, how about what you WOULD do?

Well, the first thing I would do is remember what you don't do. What you don't do is...

And so on, ad barfitae.

They have nothing!!! They state a few vague things then Attack Democrats. They keep avoiding actually answering the question. Call them out time and time again until a toddler in front of the TV machine gets it!!!!!!!!

were these "born-again" deficit hawks when Bush was POTUS?

oh really's picture

He was always my first choice for Commerce Secretary.

No wait, he wasn't my choice, he was Obama's choice. It is scary to think that between Obama and Gregg only one of them had the sense to see that Gregg was a terrible choice of such a post.

hope someone sends the prez a tape of this interview

the time for reaching across the aisle is long gone

shut these aholes out of the process

lock them in a dark room in the capitol for the next 3 years

He'd be out of the Senate, and in a position where he would have to put up or shut up, and ultimately, be a reminder of why America is in the fiscal mess it is in in the first place. Besides, as noted above, Republicans are only deficit hawks when they are out of power.

Other newspeople would do the same and hold these obstructionists feet to the fire, and show the nation what these guys are really about, then, maybe, we can do some of the work that needs to be done

Unfortunately, we're going to see a lot more of this in the coming months. In the same vein as George H. W. Bush was told to go after Dan Rather to address "the wimp factor," no matter what the qhestion, the Repub's are doing the same thing to court the wingnut base by asserting their tough, independent stance. It's going to get ugly, and I would suggest the anchors/interviewers get ready and be prepared for the upcoming madeness.

I can't actually believe that Obama even CONSIDERED offering this asswipe a position in his cabinet. This was an early indication of the bi-partisan bullshit that got us into the mess we have today.

For the full x-script, I cannot bear to sit thru between 90% to 95% of GOP political banter, and that includes Gregg, who is likely NEVER going to be happy with turning down his promotion. I'm happier reading it than watching it (good for your blood pressure, ya know)

BAD choice by someone in that administration. Ray LaHood, the former GOP Congressman from Illinois 18th, not so bad. Judd Gregg?
Bad choice. Not Jim DeMint horrible, but bad nonetheless

And these "Dan Hynes for Governor" advertisements are everywhere. Ka-ching!
