Limbaugh says he may be able to support Sotomayor because she's Catholic...HAHAHAHA

Earlier today, Rush Limbaugh said that he wasn't backtracking on calling Sonia Sotomayor a racist like Gingrich did, but now he's saying that he might possibly support her because he likes Catholics and she may like "life" or some nonsense. Now all the rats are running for cover from their racist rants against Sonia.
I imagine some GOP internal polls came out saying that Gingrich and Buchanan and Limbaugh were going too far in their attacks on Judge Sonia Sotomayor as a "racist" and they are all pulling back.
Limbaugh:You know she would be the sixth Catholic on the Supreme Court and there are a lot of people worried about that, that does not bother me at all. I know a lot of Catholics and I love Catholics, but Sotomayor is a Catholic and she doesn't have a clear record on abortion and I'm, youuuu....overturning Roe vs Wade, that would be huge. I don't know if it will ever happen. I can see a possibility of supporting this nomination if I could be convinced if she does have a sensibility towards life.

...Justice System....Yes, Mr. Rusty Limbaugh got preferential treatment from the State of Florida's Justice Department, and he belongs on trial for crimes, if not, in prison for drug trafficking. If that was a black or Latino man, the state of Florida would have convened a trial for that individual. It is time to call this criminal Limbaugh out for who he is--a coward who used his white man connections to escape the laws for drug trafficking.
Again, Rush Limbaugh got affirmative action for white men in the Florida Judicial system. Limbaugh needs to stop crying over "affirmative action" and other "special rights" when he (Limbaugh) did get special white man treatment by the law.

I'm trying to decide who in the republican party yanked the chains on Rush and Newt. Why would they both decide on the same day to walk back thier tone? Did Newt decide first and Rush later or did Rush decide and tell Newt to go first? Something funky going on here. Maybe Newt is smart enough and strong enough to realize if they didn't stop this silly shit it would be taps for their party.

I wrote something on another thread on Saturday about reading in the local Catholic weekly that the official Catholic Stance on Sotomayor was that she was okay with them, her positions were consistant with Church teachings, and no mention of any problem with her writings on abortion at all.
At the end of the article, it meantioned that she would be the sixth Catholic on the Supreme Court if she is confirmed, and although I liked her, this posed a bit of a problem for me because of my belief in seperation of church and state. I was not called a Concern Troll, but I was treated as one, by some of the regulars here.
The Catholic Church has sent out the word that she is okay with them...This is a concern, particularly given the way that John Kerry who is a practicing Catholic, was ostracized by the church for his pro-life views..and the beating that Obama took over the Notre Dame thing...
Today, Rushie and Newtie are back tracking. Who do you think pulled their chain? A large group of their financial backers who are right wing Catholics, like Bill Donohue and the legion of right winger who want to control the Catholic Church, in general.
I come at this from the other end: why the hell is the Catholic Church even giving an opinion on her? They should stay out of politics in accordance with our Constitution. If not, then pull their tax-exempt status.

I don't think most catholics give a shit what their leadership thinks of Sotomayor any more than they give a shit what their bishops think of birth control. That kind of control of their communicants bit the big one in the 60s, and the Roman church's leadship has been on a long slope down ever since.
the simple fact is if they like her they'll support her and if they don't they wont....like everybody else in America. separating "catholics" out as some kind of special interest voting bloc is a long-dead fable.
In the midwest, where I live, there are definitely a lot of Catholics that walk in lock step with whatever they are told. I go to church with a lot of them. (think, white, middle class suburbia..the people who fill the coffers of the local diocese.)
There are pockets of people in our diocese who think for themselves..but who do you think is funding the Catholic Pro-life movement and standing behind people like Archbishop Raymond Burke and his ilk, who feel free to verbally excommunicate entire portions of religion because they disagree on one or two subjects like abortion.
At any rate, the numbers across the country and the money that the far right wing inside the church is able to generate for the far right wing in politics, is important enough to the Republican base, that it is a huge influence on folks like RUSH and NEWT.

The archbishop of LA, by the way, said in 2004 that he would not deny communion to John Kerry. He also reprimanded a priest who denied communion to an Obama supporter.
I'm not so sure. Catholics make up 24.5% of the Population, and, with this appointment, 66% of the court. The four consistently right wing members of the current court are professed Catholics. I don't want any more Catholics on the court. How about at least one atheist for a change? We are the only 'religious' group in the country that is growing, and we are growing FAST.
Honestly, I don't think a judicial candidate's religion should have anything to do with whether or not they are confirmed. If it were possible, no one should know if they are even religious. We aren't there yet, but maybe some day.

They may think it's nice that she's a catholic like them, but most american catholics really aren't interested in exploring whether Sotomayor's judicial dispostion aligns with what their leadership thinks and wants. catholic bishops in the US have so marginalized themselves even in their own church that what they have to say is irrelevant to the thinking of most catholics.

I can still believe in the Holy Trinity and pray in my own way without their help, but my true belief is secular government in my country without the church, ANY CHURCH, imposing their fairy-tale beliefs on American citizens.

But, like most of the Catholics I went to catechism with, I'm pro-choice. See, we have all learned to put the American "civil religion," and our own moral learned-lessons before the ever-shifting and unreal teachings of the Church since the 1930's. The various little old men in dresses in Rome teetered between Hitler and Jesus so often, that we just had to find our own, more stable way. I suspect Judge Sotomayor is one of us.
