Robert Gibbs, Senator Obama's communication director and senior spokesman called out Sean Hannity for using the likes of Andy Martin as a source that appeared on his own show to attack Obama with. Good for him and that's how it's done. (rough transcript)
Gibbs: Let me ask you a question. Are you anti-Semitic?

The fact remains that Obama is a stealth candidate and has not been honest with who his friends are. He is no "open book" and has been slippery on the issue of his "friends." Let's put that aside. He has never stood for change. He didn't do anything in Illinois (I'm from Illinois) of note. He started his career by getting all the other candidates thrown off the ballot for state senate. Obama has never faced a real challenger. He will probably win this campaign, but not because he is the better "man" for the job.
A paper cut out of a Democrat would be up by 15 nationally, but this guy is not ready to lead a marching band. We need someone serious for the job, not someone like Obama. Hillary would have been better prepared and she married her way into a senate seat.

I want to take issue with something here. Father Michael Pfleger is parish priest in a community I used to live in. I know the good he has done. He lives and works in the community he ministers to, and the people there respect and admire him. He isn't afraid to stand up to The Church, the politicians, the gangbangers or anyone. It may not mean shit to you to have malt liquor and cigarette billboards in black communities (no matter if they are affluent or not) but it means something to me and a lot of other people. How many do you see in white neighborhoods? Even though black people are less likely to smoke than white people, and white teenagers drink more than black teenagers?
How many old people's homes have you set up? When the white Catholic schools refused to let St Sabina into their leagues, what did you do? Did you stand up for little kids against an ugly face of racism? Are you even from fucking Chicago?
Father Pfleger is in-your-face and tells it like it is. I mean, there are so many white people that don't believe racism exists when a black or other person of color says it happens; I guess Father Pfleger was telling out the family secret when he talked about it.

When Colmes defended Hannity saying that he was not an Anti-Semite, Mr. Gibbs should have said something like this:

Hannity's logic seems to be since Ayer's and Obama know each other and sat on the same board, Obama must be a domestic terrorist just like Ayers. Guilt by association is a GOP-patented tactic practiced in the earl 1950's by Senator Joseph McCarthy. All the guest had to say is that Hannity and the McCain campaign are using McCarthy era tactics to try to assassinate Obama's character, a cynical and desperate ploy.
Hannity should be fired by Fox for promoting McCarthyism, whether or not he's anti-semetic.
People are being rather hard on Gibbs. Here, Gibbs has essentially done exactly what Hannity and others have done in relation to Obama (except he has obviously reversed the rhetoric). Many viewers (of this clip) and readers who subsequently commented, stating that Gibbs should have pointed out the hypocrisy of the anti-semitic association after Hannity himself said that he was not an anti-semite. However, Gibbs isn't doing that and therefore, the rhetoric is stronger and much more effective in an ironic sense. He's doing exactly what Hannity has done to Obama; guilt by association without any level of leniency, as that has not been awarded to Barack Obama, so why should it be given to Sean Hannity?
The point wasn't to explicitly defend Obama. The point was to implicitly do so as intelligent viewers and those on the fence about Obama (moderates) would be highly attuned to the hypocrisy on display. They would "get it", essentially. Gibbs is not trying to leave his fingerprints on FOX's conservative viewers because he knows it's useless to try.
Nicely said. The ones who will "get it" are the moderates. That being said, do moderates still watch FOX?

If you found him repugnant, why didn't you berate him about his anti-semitism, the way you berate other guests you disagree with?" I'm afraid Hannity's regular viewers and viewers of Faux News just wouldn't be able to figure out Gibbs' intent.

I echo the sentiments of the respondent that doubts the validity of Hannity being a journalist. He is a commentator and an entertainer. A journalist asks questions and waits for the answer. A journalist is interested in the truth of the story. Hannity asks a question and when the answer is contrary to his views he argues, outshouts, and otherwise tries to silence his guest. He is the antithesis of a journalist and as a result taints all that a journalist truly is.
At least Limbaugh allows his guests that disagree with him state their cases.
When Hannity was defending himself by explaining he puts all points of view on his show Gibbs should have asked him why he did not explore those anti-semitic statements made by Martin. He should have pointed out that when Hannity has the Al Sharpton's on his show he is always asking them to disavow staements they previously made or condemn statements that Hannity thinks the guest will defend. Calling Hannity anti-semitic gave him the opportunity to defend himself and spew more of his Ayers Wright crap. I wish someone would figure out how to debate with the Hannity's of the world.

I don't understand this love-hate relationship of Jews by the converted born-again Christian zealots. On the one hand, they love Israel, but they hate the Jews that live there. All the while, they profess their worship to a Jew, Jesus Christ.

I think the whole point of nailing shammity with the anti-semitic guest, is that by shammity's own logic of connecting Obama with another, who committed some crimes when Obama was 8, because Obama knew him recently, means shammity can be connected to the views of his guest, particularly since it's more current, and they're both adults. And the odds are pretty good that shammity does share those views.

I would like to get back to journalism with "point and counterpoint" as we had before the Reagan adminstration. If one point of view is presented in the press, the opposing point must be presented. In this way, those who spend all their viewing time listening to Fox will at least hear the other side of the argument. If folks don't have critical reasoning skills maybe we should mandate that all sides are presented.
