Progressive donors need to step up to the plate and support blogs and new media operations
Danny Goldberg writes a brilliant piece on Howie's DWT that explains the real reason Air America failed: There is no will to sustain left-wing media, talk radio or support the liberal blogosphere if it doesn't turn an immediate profit.
Right-wing millionaires realize that it takes years to develop any sort of model that works, but they also understand that making money isn't the point of their ventures. It's to get their messaging out to as many people as they can. And they are successful at it.
Conservatives believe in doing whatever it takes to promote their ideas. Richard Viguerie, viewed as one of the architects of the modern conservative movement, wrote a book in 2004 called America’s Right Turn: How Conservatives Used New and Alternative Media To Take Power, in which he explains how the right wing used talk radio among other tools. Viguerie stresses that conservatives understand that ideological change does not usually occur over night, that it takes patience and long term thinking to build a movement.
In the early nineteen seventies the Washington Post and New York Times were instrumental in helping expose the Watergate scandal and publishing the Pentagon papers. Conservatives felt that liberals had an advantage in setting the agenda because of the influence of New York and D.C. newspapers on the national media. In 1976 Rupert Murdoch bought the New York Post and it has lost money every year since, the total loss estimated to be more than half a billion dollars. In 1983, the Rev. Sun Myung Moon created the Washington Times, which has also lost money every year. Widely published reports place Moon’s losses at over $1 billion on the Times and other political media including a purchase the venerable wire service UPI. These money losing properties have put dozens of conservatively slanted stories onto the national radar screen, altered the framing of every important political issues, and nurtured virtually every right wing pundit who now thrive as TV talking heads.
More recently, Phillip Anschutz bought the money losing Weekly Standard from Murdoch and announced plans to invest in more conservative media and his fellow billionaire and former Republican Treasury Secretary Pete Petersen started a digital news service called The Fiscal Times.
The fatal flaw in Air America’s genetic code was the pretense that liberal talk radio was a great business opportunity, that progressives could have their cake and eat it too, do well by doing good, make big salaries and get a great return on investment while also pursuing an ideological agenda. Sure, every once in awhile political media like Michael Moore’s movies or Rush Limbaugh’s radio show will make money, but for those interested in influencing public opinion, media in all venues is vital whether they make money or not.
Air America scared the bejeezus out of conservatives because they had never seen such an enterprise before, and that's why Bill O'Reilly and Fox News did everything they could to smear them from its inception. The liberal blogosphere is in the same predicament. We need funds to survive and thrive and with a bad economy, ad revenues dropped off considerably in 2009.
Readers do not like to see ads on blogs for the most part, but without them C&L could not survive and neither would most highly trafficked sites. Corporations are sinking in millions of dollars at a shot to try and buy their Internet real estate while most of us already have an imprint that is virtually impossible to find without multimillion-dollar investments.
I'm trying to create jobs for bloggers and expand to combat the right-wing noise machine, but I need help to do it. I've talked to several very wealthy people who are really incredible progressives and they don't know that much about blogs even at this point in time. The wealthy progressive collective needs to rethink their positions on media and invest in the future for America if the left will have a chance to match the right. We are seeing an erosion of the MSM right in front of our eyes, and men like Coors, Murdoch and Scaife are just giddy, as news turns into opinion warfare and propaganda instead of real investigative journalism.
Air America should have had access to funds regardless of what type of profit margin it made in its first few years. In a short time, Air America delivered our country a U.S. Senator named Al Franken and a superstar TV anchor named Rachel Maddow, and the right loathed the prospects of even more good voices for the left having a place to develop. In time the influence of progressive talk radio on the AM dial would far outweigh their profit projections.
Murdoch and Moon and many others on the far right easily write off the NY Post and Washington Times as a necessary investment to the future of the conservative movement. I understand that those same resources aren't available to the left -- after all, the right tends to be about the preservation of money and power -- but there is certainly enough to build radio infrastructure and help fund the liberal blogosphere that had so much to do with the resurgence of the progressive movement in 2006 and 2008. We really need the same commitment from the left. I hope the powers that be are listening.

At least that is what my Teabagger mother said. Of course she also thinks she is smarter than me. I think she confuses greed with intelligence though. Then she wonders why I don't talk to her.
If your mother thinks that Soros is running everything, then she should be smart enough to realize (given her obvious sources of information) that Soros has been replaced by ACORN.
The pranked into losing federal funding group that helps the disenfranchised vote. Dangerous to the conservative version of democracy. Of course she believes the top ten PAC donors for 2008 listed in wiki are all unions.
Silly me how could I be so stupid?
My Teabagger neighbor says that unions are far richer than any other special interest.
I'm serious. She said that. Does your mother live in San Diego?
The list is this from wiki
"2008 Election Cycle
In the 2008 elections, the top 10 PACs by money spent by themselves, their affiliates and subsidiaries were as follows:
National Association of Realtors PAC $4,020,900
IBEW PAC $3,344,650
AT&T Federal PAC $3,108,200
American Bankers Association (BANK PAC) $2,918,14
National Beer Wholesalers Association PAC $2,869,000
Dealers Election Action Committee of the National Automobile Dealers Association $2,860,000
International Association of Fire Fighters $2,734,900
International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Political Education Committee $2,704,067
American Association for Justice PAC $2,700,500
Laborers International Union of North America (LIUNA) PAC $2,555,350"
Agreed some of them are but most are not.
They have disposable income. We don't. I'm not trying to be offensive here. It's just a fact of life. And now that the economy has taken a turn for the worst, I suspect there will be fewer donations.
We're the working poor. This was planned to be this way. And their plan is working pretty damn good.
What is your conceptual, continuity?
I wonder how good an idea it would be for some progressives to get involved by fundraising for their favorite progressive media sources.
I mean a couple hundred dollars from say, someone's bake sale may not seem like much, but perhaps people that could do this sort of thing might be able to do a bit of good?
Hmm...I'm starting to get an idea here on my end of things...
Edit - A well known crafter and artist who appears regularly on the DIY Network didn't have a lot of money to give out of pocket for Haiti, so she started using proceeds for her Etsy shop to work towards having the money to donate (I bought a couple pairs of earrings from her for that very purpose).
Like I said, the wheels are turning on my end of things...

I have to figure something out.
What is your conceptual, continuity?
I'll see if I can come up with a little more down the road.
I just want to say Thank You To You John.
What you're doing is above and beyond.
It really is.
We really are,all in this together.
What is your conceptual, continuity?
Two reasons.
Corporations are sending manufacturing jobs to China not only to keep the air in their America clean but also to keep us too poor to pollute the airwaves protesting about it.
You'd think there must be some corporate stockholders smart enough to realize that jobless and low waged Americans won't be able to afford their products.
Your idea could speed that realization.
If we recycle the things we don't need at yard sales to raise money for liberal media, people buying our stuff will not be buying so much at Walmart.
I'm not progressive or working poor, but I have already donated *this* year to this blog and a few other independent small media outlets, and a few watchdog and rights groups.
I just put duct tape on my shoes instead of buy a new pair, it's on the inside, Pols and aids can't see it when I go meet to lobby for reform. I do regularly visit offices for several groups as I live in my state's capitol.
We're doing one major repair to the house right now. It desperately needs two more major repairs in the next two years. I'm not sure when I'll be able to donate again. I can't dig into funds we need to keep a roof over our heads. Our son is special needs, and we have to have money for his health care and education. State didn't think he was educable, we do, and are doing it ourselves but paying for all special services out of pocket. We are still supporting another adult child due to school & economy. Keeping the roof over our heads and children before blogs. We aren't even supporting either set of parents ... yet.
I'm still middle class. I post this so you will have some idea of exactly who your middle class small amount donors are. This one has to duct tape her friggin shoes to come up with small amounts to donate!
It's a current phenomena for me. But, and I mean you no disrespect, but, if you're taping your shoes... welcome to the club.
What is your conceptual, continuity?
No disrespect taken ... I have practice with duct tape. Didn't expect to still be doing it now, but eh .. it works.
I meant you no offense or insult. What's happening is a common occurrence. I wish you well my friend.
What is your conceptual, continuity?
money always comes with conditions. Even "wealthy progressive collective" will require certain concessions.
Seems like the last time I tried starting a business, I was told that if it didn't start bringing in a profit after 3-5 years, it was considered to be a hobby and you didn't get any tax breaks any more. Sounds like the Moonie Times and the NY Post might fall into that category (or am I totally confused?)
There's a big difference between the staff of the Moonie Times and what I do at home with jewelry making.
And if so, then the Moonie Times and NY Post people need the fuckin' take up knitting or woodwork and leave the rest of us alone!

I'll see your $10,000,000,000 Rupert, and put down my 5 spot.
Gotta start somewhere eh?
If I were a psychopath, I would join the republican party, and get in on the gravy train taking the Teabircher morons to the cleaners.
...been blogging against the well-funded Right wing for five years, that's a bargain.
It also makes a HUGE difference. I know. Whenever I get a five spot at my little blog, it buoys me more than anyone can ever guess. Value who you read, and "pay the writer" -- Harlan Ellison
Just for the sake of argument, let's assume there are 100 million voters (I know there are more). The latest numbers I saw were around 40% of those are democrats. That's 40 million folks. I give 8 bucks a month to subscribe to Mike Malloy's podcast, 10 bucks to Democracy Now, and 10 bucks to our local independent station, WFHB.
If all 40 million democrats would invest the 28 dollars I do every month, that would be 13.4 billion dollars a year.
Not everyone likes Mike Malloy, but there are also the very excellent Stephanie Miller, Bill Press, Randi Rhodes, Thom Hartman, many, many others.
I couldn't before. But she seems to have gotten the hint. She can be pretty damn smart when she lets go of the attacking Dem thing.
I say this, because When she said HRC was a w****. I had a problem with that. She's alot better now. I'm not saying she's wrong by attacking Dems.
But when she uses that kind of attack method, all it does is divide us.
We can't have anymore of that. All we need is the facts. Presented in an intelligent way. The rest will fall into place. As long as it's the truth, then we have a fighting chance. The personal attack thing gets us nowhere.
What is your conceptual, continuity?
hour long special comment on health care reform. I listen to Progressive Talk at all hours. Sometimes I'm up late, and some mornings I'm up early. I used to go to bed with the KPOJ webstream on low, so I could listen if I woke up. Now, with Nicole Sandler and Rachel Maddow's rebroadcast replaced by Alan Colmes, I'm looking for a different station with a better host, to lead into Bill Press. Colmes upsets me and makes me wake up too early.
I like Press, Carl and Christine (KPOJ), Hartmann is a must, then a delayed Schultz, instead of a live Randi. I've lost Ron Reagan too. I'm listening to the Young Turks tonight, until Mike Malloy comes on live. After Mike theres not much, except changing streams and listening to Mike again. That's sad.
Until you respect the citizenship of those with which you disagree, you're not a true American.
Don't need 28 dollars monthly to make it work. 10 dollars would do the job nicely.
Except your overly optimistic about the commitment most registered Democrats have to anything political. That's why our strongest historical source has been the Unions. Just look at how few Dems turn out for special elections or even mid-terms. Let alone pledge any money whatsoever.
But I wonder: Where are the "blue" corporations? Or, these days, the "green" corporations?
Clear Channel carried many Progressives shows like Stephanie Miller and Ed Schultz. During the last years of Shrub many CC stations changed formats from top rated progressive shows to poorly rated sports channels. They were more than willing to take a loss in revenue in order to silence liberal talk. I think CC only took the progressive shows in the first place because their reputation had become so tainted from their role in getting Shrub elected.
There are many Progressive shows and news sources on the internet. Some enterprising, web savvy person should organize them into a subscriber based network. Or some rich guy (lets hit up John Stewart!) could fund it.
I couldn't listen to Air America.
I liked Al's show - particularly on Fridays.
That's it.
Randi Rhodes was doing a Rush impression with her own ditto-heads. Very self-absorbed. We had to hear about her body. Ick.
And they had Jerry Springer on. He would talk like a liberal for a few minutes, and then he would revert to talking about prostitution and transvestites.
I liked Garafolo, but the program was amateurish and also self-involved.
Sam Seder.... whatever.
They had a great opportunity and didn't know what to do with it.
Kinda like Obama.
talent. I liked more shows than you did and they never got the chance to finish what they started.
to delete if necesary, but Howard Zinn died today... I posted the link at the last Open Thread. Don't want to derail anything, but word just got out a little while ago and I thought C & Lers would want to know.

... the problem with Air America is that it wasn't entertaining.
If you want to retain listeners, you can be informative, but you darn well better be entertaining. Air America went for informative and "let's change the world" first, and any thoughts of being entertaining came second.
Maybe it's just the way it is: Rush and his rich listenership can afford to laugh at the world and joke around, while the beleagured left-wing listeners to AA can't help but be deadly serious all the time, given the nature of the stuff that hits their hot-buttons. It's hard to joke about poverty and unequal rights and gay marriage and don't-ask-don't-tell and whatever else and still keep it light enough to not make people all depressed.
Nobody wants to turn on the radio so they'll get depressed.
I wonder about your lack of humor comment. Granted, Randi Rhodes and especially Mike Malloy did suffer from excessive "exuberance". Malloy comes across as being a bit of a flake, and Randi has a real take no prisoners approach that often is grating (especially with callers she disagrees with). But Stephanie Miller's show was quite light, and there are others too.
The best show, and the model, was Al Franken's. Becomes it combined seriousness, information, humor and especially guests of the caliber that we now see turning up on cable TV shows.
On the other hand, it's a lot easier to have a successful show where intelligence isn't a high priority. Wher you can say the most outlandish things, engage in the ad-hominems and over simplifications, and most of your audience will applaud in koolaid fashion. That's the secret of right-wing radio.
Not to mention the corporate dominated monopoly right wing radio enjoys. Unlike what occurs with MSNBC, which isn't carried on the basic schedule of many cable lineups, including satellite. But Fox is.
The Dino Corporations and Government Officials have left a bunch of doors wide open for us liberals to be the next money men. However it seems there are no, if few Progressives willing to step up to the next level to do so. Heres how we can grab back the wealth and or work towards that goal.
1) Truly organize. Not just create blogs but step up to the bat and make more concrete organizations with clear goals that can be accomplished year after year.
2) Utilize the bad economy for our own good. Now the enemy of the people has been laid bare for all to see. The American people can see that the Banks, and super elite are against them. So use this anger and direct it. It can be as simple as creating Progressive companies ( Companies that pay their employees a living or better wage and give money to progressive causes) that can hire the unemployed. Also the fields left open by the dinos are Green Energy. Lets make the green energy sector the sector of the progressives.
I thought preachers always passed the plate.

Maybe Angelina Jolie could adopt this site.
I could stand little nursin'.
Diabolus est Deus Inversus
This analysis is long overdo. Conservatives realize there's a long haul and that laying the successful foundation is a priority. I've seen little of the same acumen and commitment from liberals and progressives. The latter in particular have been bitten by the "all or nothing" virus.
I thought years ago that Air America should have done a nationwide subscription drive. To get monthly pledges (not big ones either) to sustain it, even from progs in areas where it's not available. And if there was any doubt that corporations don't favor the Cons, it's in the ownership of talk radio networks/stations.
Not to mention that in areas where there is lefty radio, I'll be most Progs don't even bother to listen to it. Might take away from their keyboard time, I guess.
This is nothing new as a problem. Markos outlined it more completely - because it goes beyond media - in his book.
subscriptions are often very inexpensive, but I subscribe to several progressive blogs (including C & L) on my Kindle. At one to three dollars per month per blog, it might only be a drop in the bucket...but maybe if more blogs did that it might be a small little source of revenue?

Why should we be paying on both ends?

Folks:
I know we think that we need a large expensive operation but their is a little struggling internet radio network that needs 24,000 dollars of support every year. If you want to help bring this network out of the shadows they can be found at http://headonradionetwork.com/
They have an intelligent long format they call conversation radio.
Try it.
I know they are fans of C&L.
If everyone who has commented (currently 35) gave the HORN $10 per month they'd be about 15% closer to their monthly goal.
At $20 per month we are looking at ~35%. This is something we can do.
Try the 6-9PM timeslot you might find it is the best conversation you've listened to. I know I'm a fan.
When Air America folded, I searched and found HORN. Callers are allowed to talk too long sometimes, but they're the last liberal radio network and they are more interesting than Lionel, Montel and the like (although I miss Ron Reagan.)
This month, Haiti broke some of us, but February is almost here, and I shall donate to HORN.
I noticed John mentioned that in passing in the post, and I didn't know they had their stinking ape paws in media companies. Does this mean I'm gonna have to start boycotting the beer again?
