Quote of the Day: Debbie Stabenow on the 'public option'

Debbie Stabenow was on CNN's State of the Union this morning and made the case for the public option.

STABENOW: Well, my first choice and very strong choice is a public option. And I have to say, Wolf, that what my friends are saying, Senator Gregg and Senator Alexander really are scare tactics that have been put forward by folks that don't want to change the system because they make a lot of money off the current system right now.

The reality for families today is if there's an insurance company bureaucrat between you and your doctor telling your doctor what they're allowed to do because of what they'll pay for, telling you what they'll pay for, putting you through all kinds of bureaucracy to try to figure out if you can get care, assuming you're not dropped if you get sick or can't get insurance if you have a pre-existing condition. So what we're talking about is putting somebody on your side, being able to make sure that the insurance company, the for profit insurance company won't provide you with a low cost insurance policy for your family that you have another choice.

I saw this, and thought that Stabenow was spot on. The Greggs, Alexanders and the rest of the Repug (and Dem) status quo need their cahones put to the fire! Most of these politicians are in bed with the current distorted, money sucking health care system, and they must be called out! Go Debbie Go!

Stabenow supports the public option because her Senate seat depends on it ... given the crushing job losses Michigan has been suffering .. but regardless .. good for her

Bill Moyers is doing a segment on this now on PBS

Moyers just referred to William Kristol as "Republican propagandist". Talk about nail on the head.

.

I saw that too, truly a LOL moment! That describes Kristol (and the rest of his ilk) to a tee!

So glad she called out Gregg et al. on why they don't want change.

Damn, wish someone like she was the point person on this, rather than health insurance shill Max Baucus.

My Senator:

Ms Military Commissions et al.

Single Payer Single Payer Single Payer

those who oppose a public option DON'T CARE about the majority of their constituent's who consistently poll that they want choices for health care, and this very much includes a public option. what these politicians CARE about ONLY is working for their true masters: the insurance and health care industries. and that means opposing anything like a public option, unless the insurance/health care industry gets to write how that option looks. so Gregg, Alexander, Kyl, and some conservative Dems have FAILED their consitiuents by ignoring the very wishes of most of those constituents due to their vigorous rejection of the public option. they should be called on this: just whom are they working for? those big companies and their deep pockets or the small mom and pop voters and business owners who elected them to begin with? its clear they dont work for the latter. shame on them. but again, they DON'T CARE.

Now, for the rest of them. Americans are sick, sick, sick of the sell out to the corporations, and the health care/pharma groups are the absolute WORST! It's time to put pressure of Fienstein, Bachus, Bayh, Conrad, B.Nelson, Lieberman and the rest of the bribe takers. These guys have the best health benefits in the nation on our dime. How dare they watch America as at least 20,000 people die each years due to lack of access (# is probably much higher). It's time to pressure these crooks into "country first" and "change we can believe in." Americans are fed up with the self interest of Congress. All many of them care about is filling their campaign coffers regardless of who they betray in the process.

Michael Moore needs to rerelease SICKO and hold off his new film....!

SICKO and needs a major heart and brain transplant, but that can only happen until the health insurance lobby gives them back.

Single payer! Bankrupt the health care mafia!

Than a for-profit health insurance company. They make their millions off the illness of other people, and they maintain their millions by denying people coverage with may or may not lead to death.

These bureaucrats and executives are playing with lives to line their pockets. Hell even unscrupulous arms dealers are better people, they don't pretend to not make money of people dying.

A non-profit government option would drive for-profit private companies out of business? I fail to see the problem. Destroying these for-profit health insurance companies will be good for the country.

from gambling...

i gamble my money and buy insurance because there's a chance i will need to use the "benefits", and am too afraid of losing house and home due to an illness or accident...

the insurance co gambles with my money, and the accumulation of others' (including the "refused" payouts), that they will not have to provide any benefits...

i think the odds favor them, but i'm not sure, as i'm not getting any younger... but they do have a bigger stash of money than i do...

... something like that...

I can: health insurance companies that claim to be non-profit so they don't have to pay taxes, but still pay their executive $5 million+ salaries and try their best to keep from paying for anything. I had better coverage and more "on-my-side" service from my previous provider, who was openly for-profit, than the current one, which is supposedly non-profit.

“Asked if the administration's program will be drafted specifically to prevent it from evolving into a single-payer plan, Sebelius says: "I think that's very much the case..."”

I wonder how they do that. People will choose the cost competitive option. I suppose the way to prevent the public option from evolving into single payer is to sabotage it so that it isn't cost competitive.

Incidentally, the way to make the public option cost competitive is to make it a part of Medicare, combining its purchasing power with Medicare, so that discounts can be negotiated.

Go Deb!

Why can't our majority caucuses do this ALL the time? Dems taking $$$ from health insurance giants need to be called out. Now.

I'm glad somebody has made the point LOUD AND CLEAR that it's the insurance companies standing between you and your doctor. You hear the assholes say yoiu don't want the govt to stand between you and your doctor all the god damn time. What is so hard for these jokers to say it's the insurance companies who are killing you??

Thanks, John for this snippet of good news regarding health care reform.

What would be even more awesome is confirmation that Rep. D. Stabenow
supports Rep. John Conyers bill, HR-676.

Single Payer. Single Payer, NOW!

people ( and i use that word very carefully ) do they have no siblings ? or parents , who else could be such cold hearted bastards , wait others ( notice i didnt use the word peeeeople ) in the mic/phrma and all of the rest of the money grubbing assholes .

What kind of country are we , if we can not take care of those we have " enticed " to go to fight for ( their ) war ? . Insurance is fraud first and foremost . The young the old those that need it the most , sorry rainny day cancled .

Loose the insurance companies and watch affordable health care take place.

I'm glad to see that she's on the right side of the public option issue, although it's a survival issue with her (as other posters have noted.) But never forget that this woman voted for the Military Commissions Act - and for me, at least, that puts her forever beyond the pale. I'd happily support almost any primary challenger in 2012 to get her out of the Senate.
