Tom Tancredo walks off the set of The Ed Show after Markos calls him out as a chickenhawk

Tom Tancredo stormed off the set of the Ed Show when he was debating health care with Markos Moulitsas. Poor baby.
It all started when Tancredo started trash-talking the Veterans Administration, at which point Markos brought up his chickenhawk past. He got angry and tried the standard conservative whine, realized he was better quitting while he was behind, and then stormed off. The truth hurts, right Tom?
As a Republican student activist, Tancredo spoke out in favor of the Vietnam War. After graduating from the University of Northern Colorado in June 1969, he became eligible to serve in Vietnam. Tancredo said he went for his physical, telling doctors he'd been treated for depression, and eventually got a "1-Y" deferment.
Too many of these cowards discuss our troops when they themselves refused to serve when they had the chance. Here's Jed Lewison:
A few minutes ago on The Ed Show, Tom Tancredo tried to make the case against government health care by claiming that the Veterans Administration is unpopular with U.S. military veterans. The only problem for him was that he was up against Markos...who is one of those veterans, unlike Tancredo, a pro-Vietnam War chickenhawk who got a 1-Y deferment.
When Markos pointed out that Tancredo was (a) wrong about the Veterans Administration and (b) not qualified to speak for veterans, Tancredo exploded in anger, demanding an apology. Markos did not oblige, and Tancredo stormed off the set.
Funny, too, how the most thin-skinned of the wingnuts are the same people most prone to making vicious, uncivil, frequently racist and xenophobic remarks. Tancredo, after all, is a guy who claimed the National Council of La Raza was just like the Ku Klux Klan, and called Sonia Sotomayor a racist, and told the people of Brownsville, Texas, that they should build the border fence on the northern side of their city.
And then goes whimpering and whining off the stage when he gets a clean shot to the gut with hard facts. There's a street name for that, but this is a family blog.

Cheney, Rumsfeld and all the other chicken hawk war cheerleaders should be called out every time they come on tv to cheer lead their bogus wars. But that would mean the MSM actually had some gall.

He flew in the fifties, from just after Korea until the end of the decade or so. Typical of his breed (carrier fighter pilot), he was competent at his job and thought it proved he was God. Too bad he never got the chance at some real pants-shitting combat--that might have give the wisdom he so badly lacked in sending in "the troops we have" to fight his own fantasy wars.

Let me see if I have this right: The government gives tax payer's money to the vets so they can purchase private insurance, then insurance companies skim 30% off the top of the premiums and limit coverage the vets get. What do the tax payers get for that 30%? The warm fuzzies?

When Tancredo started his complaints about the VA and veterans I was hoping Markos would tell him he was a veteran and map out to Tancredo how he was wrong in so many ways.......to my joy Markos took Tancredo on. It was wonderful. I loved every minute of it. That smarmy Tancredo needs to go home and stay there.

I was part of the Fort Meade anti-war rally that closed down the Armed Forces Day 'celebration' in 1970, for the first time in history. Viet Nam Returnee's, in the thousands, protested the war that day.

I watched this live earlier today, good riddens. I think he is getting confused with soldiers who will actively complain about anything (me)and the hoops that you are really made to jump through just to get some medical attention.
I've never had to use the VA myself, I'm still active duty so I use the post MMC, in order to see a doctor we have to call the MMC during a small window of time starting at 0600 in the morning, no guarentee that you will get seen that day. They do this because quite a few soldiers fake illnesses in order to get a profile to get out of PT and other activities.

Apparently you aren't aware of the way that our soldiers serve our country, you know...by sending loved ones to war, spending multiple months away from loved ones, wives and husbands are left home single-parenting while dealing with the stress of a loved one in a war zone, you sure as hell better bet that they deserve respect and honor.

Most 'grown-up' people know that storming out of the room and stamping your feet is not the best way to have your argument taken seriously. This what the GOP has become, little 13 year old kids having tantrums because they can not have their way and think they're being unfairly treated.
I really hate to say this, because I loathe Tancredo, but Markos cheap-shotted him. If he'd done it another way, such as, "Tom, I served in the military and know what my fellow veterans think. Tell us about your service and veteran-based opinions on this." might have been a better approach.
This was not a cheap shot at all. This was a direct gut-punch to a GOPer who absolutely deserved it. Tancredo is a typical Republican: a liar, a hypocrite, a chickenhawk, a racist (and Markos is a Latino; there is a connection there), and an extremist.
But even more than that: the last 30 years of constantly losing to the GOP slime machine should have taught us by now that we don't get anything by being "nice". If we try to "stay above the fray", it simply allows the GOP to splatter mud on us with impunity. If we trust that "the American people are smarter than that", they will fall for the GOP spin merely because we let it go unchallenged.
You would have had Markos give Tancredo a chance to spin his own answer, but that would have been the wrong move. We have to call these people out **DIRECTLY**. We have to say what these people really are ourselves. Otherwise, we allow them to frame themselves as the good guys of the debate, and then we lose. They position themselves as the authority of the issue and use that faux pedestal to deliberately spread false information. That is what's been happening for the past 30 years now, and it is long past time for you and all us progressives to learn this lesson.
Markos did nothing more or less than knock Tancredo off that faux pedestal and expose him for the lying, hypocritical, lower-than-scum, extremist right-winger he is. And it worked, because Tancredo's reaction was to act like a bratty kindergartener throwing a tantrum. What Markos did (and what Alan Grayson has been doing) is precisely what we need to do to all of Tancredo's fellow wingnut twists.

Markos nailed it: the GOPers and the self-appointed, self-designated elites are terrified of any government program that works, because anything that gives citizens confidence in THEIR governmentm and the institutions of THEIR government, automatically undermines the illegitimate claim to rule-by-elites instead representative governance by proxies who appointed by the People.
