Violence in the streets by Prop 8 supporters!

The Face of Proposition 8 from Theremina on Vimeo.

And you thought the crazy people were only at McCain/Palin events. These people are getting scarier by the second.

Digby nails it:

Conservatives are starting to feel very, very freaked out. And they tend to be the type of people who believe violence is the best answer for everything. You do the math. The sheer rage in the voices of the anti-gay marriage people is chilling.

Whightards seem likely to take violent umbrage at the prospect of THEIR presimun being a Kneegrow, should that come to pass, as now seems increasingly possible.

The ground has already been sown with the dragons' teeth: racist outrage, 'voter fraud,' ACORN, Socialisms, etc...

I know that area well, doesn't surprise me these goofs kept near the 580 on ramp. That is not the safest area either. They wouldn't have gotten the same reception on Piedmont avenue a few blocks away.

Sarah Palin is not the only one coming unhinged.

(Because of the format of the video I couldn't turn off the hate. Refresh screen did work. I don't watch violence as a rule, it brings down my spirirt; that goes for movies too. I'm a yogi; what can I say?)

jeez... i'm sure it was just awful there, but it was made much worse by the treadful acoustics and echo chamber effect from that overhead bridge... there ought to be some kind of minimal quality restrictions before posting here... that was unlistenable.
probably just as well.

The word "treadful" is so appropriate.

I hope somebody has figured out that "yes on eight" rhymes with "yes on hate". It seems to me there's some good marketing to be done here.

This video continues to depress me. For the record, the woman who shot it is not only a very nice person, but small. That these folks treated her the way they did with what I would consider no provocation just makes me hang my head.

Give Me Convenience's picture

C&L is having an issue lately with people exercising their 1st amendment rights, perhaps in a way that seems aggressive. After watching this poor quality video, maybe someone could point out the violent part. The problem with crying wolf - in claiming that the point of view that opposes yours is violent when in fact they are not - destroys any credibility should such violence arise. This is a danger for any distributor of information, including a blog. In watching the video that should never have seen the light of day, it appears obvious that the "No to 8" supporter (nice but small) is provoking the "Yes to 8" folk.

I expect violence, no matter who wins.

far left loon >.<

Doesn't look good, does it?

I may not agree with the faux righteous indignation of the neo-cons as they spew their talking points on TeeVee, but I can understand it. It’s what they do. I can also understand the very righteous anger from their opposition. It’s what should be done.

But this?

This is just rabid rage. This is scary.

SouthernYankee's picture

I am afraid you may be right. I have been saying a rosary everyday praying to god that Obama wins and hopefully he will put some republicans on board and that will calm people down. I don't think even the middle of the road republicans want to see this kind of violence. I hope McCain/Palin will calm those nuts down. McCain might but I don't know about Palin. She is scary as hell. She is a hewoman to me. She like to fight dirty.

They are losing the election because they hate everybody. They have chased away anyone that doesn't agree 100% with their lunatic ideology. Personally I hope they keep it up. Soon they'll be in the same league as the moonies and all the other fringe lunatics.

Dear Christian Voter,

When you voted to take away my ability to marry who I love, did you do it because you're not judging me? Or did you do it to preserve the sanctity of the institution of marriage.

If you vote to restrict how I commit to my love based on your judgment of me, let me remind you of Jesus Christ's only two Commandments, "Judge not least ye be judged..." and, "Love your neighbor as you would have him love you." So, in that measure, just how is Christ to restrict his love for you?

If you vote to preserve the institution of marriage, then why is it that divorce is allowed to permeate through our culture, destroying families and lives, undermining that institution all together? Instead of restricting how and who I can love, why don't you vote to repeal divorce laws, instead. At least then, you'll have a solid base of an institution intact from which you can launch other attack campaigns from. I mean, what kind of Christian gets a divorce thinking that God will look the other way?

But the first thing you have to do when you embrace religious dogma is toss out logic. The very statement, "I can't prove there is a God, I take it on faith." is enough to convince anybody with a brain that religion should be classified as a mental illness.

Stupid Git's picture

From Deuteronomy:

1 “When a man takes a wife and marries her, and it happens that she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some indecency in her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out from his house, 2 and she leaves his house and goes and becomes another man’s wife, 3 and if the latter husband turns against her and writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house, or if the latter husband dies who took her to be his wife, 4 then her former husband who sent her away is not allowed to take her again to be his wife, since she has been defiled; for that is an abomination before the LORD, and you shall not bring sin on the land which the LORD your God gives you as an inheritance.
5 “When a man takes a new wife, he shall not go out with the army nor be charged with any duty; he shall be free at home one year and shall give happiness to his wife whom he has taken.

---
That said, I doubt any person with a few functioning cells in their skull would think the laws in Deuteronomy were worth keeping around in this day and age.

Heh, it's not just divorce you'll find in the Bible. Incest and polygamy abound without much objection from the god head. And I suppose we shouldn't get started on all the killing.

I would really like to know what these people are afraid of. Violence is the act of cowards. They have no real argument against two people loving each other. If they did they would not be behaving like this.

where have you people been? The hatred and violence from the right is nothing new. They have always been like that. The only difference is now they're getting MSM attention. That and they can see the writing on the wall. They know their side is about to lose their grip on any power they once had and they scared and angry about it.

“What are the psychological or biological or other roots of this…disorder?”

Latent inferiority complexes, for the most part. Remember the refrain in the old Kris Christopherson song, “Jesus Was A Capricorn: “Everybody’s gotta have somebody to look down on”? Americans, being mostly the descendants of people who were looked down on by just about EVERYBODY else (why do you think they migrated here?) are pathologically inferiority-ridden folks.

Why the fixation on being #1? Why “exceptionalism”? Why the rampant jingoism, and xenophobia?

Racism is a system that enshrines the “superiority” of folks who have done absolutely nothing to achieve it.

So is nationalism.

Lizzy Bennet's picture

You know gay marriage is such a weird issue to me. In my mind a person should be able to do whatever damn well they please to do as long as no one is harmed in the process. For me, gay marriage harms no one. In fact denying marriage to gay couples causes emotional harm. Furthermore, just because gay marriage is legalized does not mean that a gay couple can go to a strict baptist church and demand to be married. The church still has its freedom to choose whom they will marry. I think it's funny that people are in such a ridiculous tizzy over the issue of gay marriage. Gay marriage just means the government recognizes the marriage. The church can still do whatever they want to do because a marriage means nothing even if married in a church if there is no marriage license.

See this issue has nothing to do with religion. I wish people would understand that!

Ehhhh….somewhat.

We’re talking about two types of contracts – one legal, recognized by the State; the other moral, recognized by some God.

Now on the Legal front, marriage is a contract that binds, or joins two people. They are given the rights of each other to share equally. The process of divorce is the dissolution of that contract.

On the religious side, the devout want to preserve the sanctity of “Holy Matrimony” in the “eyes of God”. I say, well good for them.

I’m not sure why gay couples feel the need to have a religious marriage in the first place, but that’s between them and their Church. I don’t see any reason not to grant every legal benefit of a Civil Union to gay couples that duplicates marriage by law.

Lizzy Bennet's picture

I understand you point; however, I was trying to talk about the legal aspect of marriage not the moral (government has no business legislating morality, in my mind). I guess the thing is gay marriage as recognized by the State does not directly change the main tenants of religion. It's not like the Vatican is saying that gay marriage is okay with God. No, gay marriage right now is just changing the legal aspects of marriage that is recognized by the State. The church still has the right to do what they want. I understand the religious side of things, trying to preserve "Holy Matrimony." However, even if the State says that gay marriage is legal, the church can still choose to believe what they will and act accordingly due to the separation between church and state.

I'm being extremely verbose today. I apologize in advance.

There are churches that recognize gay marriage.

Professor Slats's picture

"I’m not sure why couples feel the need to have a religious marriage in the first place, but that’s between them and their Church."

That is one of the great things about America; it is between us and our church. We can get married in a religious ceremony, or we can have a secular marriage. Thank god, the government does not discriminate.

You took out the "gay". You're right. I shouldn't have implied a distinction.

The sad part is; I don't think you even realize it.

Why should a black person complain about having to use a black water fountain when both water fountains are equal?

Why should a gay couple complain about not being able to get married when they can have a Civil Union and both provide the same legal benefits?

No... this just doesn't fly.

If a pastor performs a marriage ceremony for heterosexual couple and he or she refuses to perform a ceremony for a gay couple then the gay couple should be able to seek remedy through a Civil Rights Lawsuit against that church and pastor.

Religous beliefs are secondary to Civil Rights Issues in this country.

Yeah, I didn't even realize it. It wasn't my argument though.

If a gay couple wishes to have a religious ceremony in their Church of choice - that's up to the Church - not the State. I don't know why they would want to because I wouldn't be a member of any Church that wouldn't allow it.

The State has no authority over what the Church sanctions. They should have every right to the same State benefits of a legal marriage, however.

On the other end of the line was what sounded like a young Republican type of dweeb, telling me why I should vote for Arizona's Prop 102, which is a "protect marriage" pice of shit. The last time around, it was called "Prop 100."

These christians love to get their hate on...

Fortunately, half asleep though I was, I had the presence of mind to say:

" This is just another attempt by narrow minded christian nitwits to keep people from loving who they will."

"I am on the "Do Not Call" registry, and I will be reporting you on Monday."

I felt much better after that.

Andy K's picture

But political organizations aren't covered by the Do Not Call laws.

From the FTC:

What types of calls are not covered by the National Do Not Call Registry?
The Do Not Call provisions do not cover calls from political organizations, charities, telephone surveyors, or companies with which a consumer has an existing business relationship. However, sellers and telemarketers should also be aware that the FCC regulates telemarketing calls. For more information, see the FCC’s Web site, www.fcc.gov.

So don't waste your time. It's a question of political speech, not marketing consumer goods. 1st Amendent and all....

Seeing and hearing all the Yes on Proposition h8te ads is just stomach-churning. They are so full of hysterical over the top misinformation, it's outrageous. There are now plenty of No on Proposition h8te ads running too, but I'm not sure if it's too late. My only hope is that if the proposition does pass, then immediate lawsuits will be filed the next day, because the proposition is simply unconstitutional.

All I want to know is, why do they hate people so much? And why are they so threatened by the whole idea of gay marriage? A former co-worker started berating me the other day about it, that basically "if you give the gays the right to marry, then fathers will want the right to marry their daughters, and brothers will want the right to marry their sisters!" At least she stopped short of the "men will want to marry horses" chestnut. When I told her that I thought that point of view was nothing but scare tactics, she started hitting me with Bible verses. When I told her that not everyone believes in or reads the Bible, she said something weird about people murdering each other, and then I'm not sure what else because I just gave up. It was obvious that she was completely close-minded on the subject.

And just for the record, I am a heterosexual woman who is a Catholic who attends Mass every weekend. And I am thoroughly and completely against Proposition h8te.

Abbybwood's picture

The way I understood the language of the proposition is that apparently there is already a law on the books in California either passed by the Legislature and signed into law by Ahhnold or there was already a previous Initiative passed that legalized gay unions. I think it was pretty recent because that's when Ellen Degeneres married Portia What's Her Name from "The Sopranos".

The way the Initiative reads it is to REPEAL the current California law that allows gay unions. So YES means repeal the law and make gay unions illegal and NO means to leave the current law alone and allow gay unions.

Therefore, tolerant Californians will most likely be shooting this Initiative down with about a 65% NO vote come Election Day. I'll bet it will garner the same percentage that Prop. 215, The Medical Marijuana Initiative got many moons ago.

I hope California votes to continue legal gay unions. The state could use lots more gays as residents. California is in trouble financially and gays can generally be counted on to be hard-working, good tax-paying citizens and great neighbors who love to shop!!! As far as I'm concerned I think it would be totally cool for all the gays and lesbians in the country...in the WORLD!! to move to Cali!!!

I really just want all the hateful anti-gay groups and right wing religious wackos like Palin and Muthee to move to Alaska and have an end times party, drink a bunch of Koolaid and wait for Jesus to show up.

Newsflash!!! I think they're all fools and have misread the meaning of J.C.'s words. To me when he said, "Love one another as I have loved you," it was a commandment that if we all fulfill his wish and truly love each other without judgment, that we will find the JOY of his LOVE in the way we "feel". We will find HAPPINESS, JOY AND PEACE. That, to me, is the second coming of Christ.

Sadly, Christians like Palin and the idiots in the video give Christians like me a bad rap.

And I make these comments as a strong No on 8 supporter.

Here is another example from the Idaho Statesman today:

GOP attack mode is justified, right?

If that cocaine-sniffing, freedom-hating, terrorist-palling, unqualified socialist hack gets elected, it'll be a sad day for true American patriots like McCain/Palin. As Cindy McCain said, Obama's campaign is the dirtiest campaign in American history, bar none. "That one's" campaign truly is low to try and refute the proven claims that McCain and Palin told Americans (mostly regarding how Obama pals around with terrorists - Palin said it, so it's gotta be true!).

When will the American sheeple see the true Obama who probably smokes dope with terrorists while plotting to destroy this great country? It really makes me agree with the man who yelled out at Palin's rally, "Kill him!" - and he's a true patriot to think that, of course. I mean, it's OK for McCain and Palin to provoke this rightful violence, because it's for the security of the country. If you disagree with me, you're supporting terrorism.

Sacredness of marriage... no one ever explains how heterosexual marriage in threatened by homosexual marriage, at least not in any way that makes rational sense... Lizzy Bennet's picture

Okay, I'm going to throw this out there just because I'm feeling especially heretical today, but doesn't it seem like marriage is going to be some antiquated institution in like a hundred years? *hides head from lightning bolt* From what I can gather society is moving from marriage for a lifetime to serial monogamy. Maybe we are evolving past marriage because its confines do not fit into modern thought and society. Thoughts anyone?

ConcernedCanuck's picture

I always thought marriage was actually forced on the masses by churches as some kind of control mechanism. It's failed. It isn't "sacred" and you don't live "happily ever after forever and ever".....most end in ugly divorces with mixed up kids. The only truth I know is that the leading cause of divorce is marriage. Without it, there is an entire section of society parasites that don't make a living.

That Mick Piobr's picture

I kinda thought that serial monogamy was what everybody did until one gets fortunate...or, perhaps stupid.?

Marriage is an archaic method of property transfer. Nothing more. And no religious affiliation.

Still are stepping on some religious toes though. That’s part of the problem. Marriage pre-dates existing laws. It started out as a cultural/social thing. In our country States have recognized the pre-existing religious ramifications and included the “legal mumbo-jumbo” due to property rights and such. Still, you can get a marriage license and later nullify it if there hasn’t been some sort of ceremony (wedding) and active “participation”. (This dates back to the mid 1500’s and the Council of Trent.)

We’re going through some cultural changes right now, for sure. Rome actually went through this too, and decided to accept same-sex marriage up until Constantine in the 340’s.

I grew up in a small town in Northern California. Church meant community potlucks and old ladies baking cookies for the kids. That was what I always thought Christianity was about.

I was in the Army stationed at Fort Stewart Ga, back in 1993. Every Saturday, this church group would walk around the barracks buildings inviting people to their church. My friend wanted to go. I agreed to go with him.

It was the craziest thing I ever saw. People were flopping around like fish on the ground. People were babbling incoherrently. People were faking seizures. The preacher was screaming. It was pure insanity. I never saw anything like it in my life. These people were conpletely nuts. Just as suddenly as the stupidity began; it ended. It was like someone turned on the reality switch and people were suddenly normal again. I walked out of that church service a converted Atheist.

I think everyone of you needs to attend one of these services that the Holy-rollers are attending; just to grasp the level of insanity of these people. They don't belong on the streets; they belong in mental wards. The Holy-rollers and Tongue-babblers are very dangerous people. Don't underestimate their capacity for violence. I was the only white guy in the place and I tell you I have never felt more welcome anywhere I've gone. We sang, we danced, they were healing people. It was the most fun I've ever had at church. The crowd was dressed really nice, nice cars in the parking lot. I was blown away. I really enjoyed it but it was exhausting. I've stayed sober for 15 years.

Something I've noticed with the latest Firefox version is that you periodically have to completely close the browser down and reopen it, otherwise Flash based content like YouTube clips will sometimes freeze or not run at all. I don't know if this is a bug or if it's some kind of intentional memory management, but it's annoying and I hope they patch it soon. I put up with it because the alternatives of IE, Safari, and Chrome all have their annoyances as well.

What is the matter with you Americans. You portray yourselves to be so ahead and leading the way for the rest of the world to follow and yet again you chose the wrong path. When you chose to suppress a group of people - do you really wonder why the world no longer looks at you as leaders. This HATE of homosexuals and their right to marry is just another futile misguided exercise in a great self-delusion of "being on God's side".

Come to Europe where for more than 15 years the Nederlands (Holland), Belgium, Spain and even your closest neighbour to the north, Canada, has allowed homosexuals to marry. Ask any heterosexual in any one of those countries if they feel that their marriage or rights are threatened. Ask them if their children are being exposed to homosexual sex or churches are forced to marry them. You silly, silly small-minded Americans. Honestly, the only thing the world should fear more than Homo-Love is your “American-Style of Hate”.

When this moment in time is written about - future generations of Americans will look back on these days as another great embarrassment. No less than a futile exercise of supression of the Jews by Nazis, Indian Independence by Great Britain or the Civil Rights of the American Negro.

This is a futile war where the odds are against you. In the end you will not win. Perhaps you may win this small battle in California but in the end it will be lost. Why? The answer is simple. Love cannot be defeated - it may be suppressed for a time by hate but in the end ... Love Never Loses.

The other thing I don't get is that I have heard about Mormon's defending their rights to marriage, no matter how much they might stretch the definition. Polygamy is not my business, and I would want anyone to live in the arrangement they see fit (with consenting adults of course).

I have heard that many Mormons have spent much energy defending their marriage rights to polygamy, yet they feel they can cross over FROM Utah and meddle in the affairs of California?

I don't get it.

Was there some kind of "gays stay overnight in Utah" incident that got out of hand that we don't know about?

I just don't get it... Guess SOME freedoms are better than others...or is it some people are freer than others...?

I'm so confused.

Must be that Jesus crowd...you know how exclusive Jesus is!

Wow, these bigots scare me too!

Not, We (some of) The People.
Those people are scary. But when people scream and act like that.
It only shows how messed up they are.
Of all people to criticize this, and it's the Mormons.Go figure.

What is your conceptual, continuity?

Holy crap, these people are SCARY and seriously riled up.

For YEARS we've been subjected to all this "Bush Derangement Syndrome" talk, but the modern GOP is TRULY deranged! You mention Obama or Prop 8 to them and they seriously act like they might just spontaneously combust with pure rage and hate. I truly think they lose control of their senses and their ability to control their own physical actions.

These are not the screams of a passionate political belief, but the screams of people unable to comprehend reality. I dare say it might actually meet the clinical definition of temporary insanity.

The GOP base truly believes that Obama is a marxist muslim terrorist. Its not scare tactics, its their personal truth. They will seriously flip out if he wins and it'll be ugly and the chance of violence truly concerns me. Say what you will about the left's reaction to Bush's reelection, it never bordered on collective mob violence. Sadness and disbelief mainly, but this is something much more frightening. I fear lives might be lost.

Is there anyone alive who honestly believes that Bush was a uniter, not a divider? Do even the 28% crowd believe that?

And the sky never fell, and the world never came to an end....
(Despite right wing claims that such would ahppen if gay marriage became possible)

Sure, despite being a liberal state, Massachusetts also has pockets of bottom feeder gay bashing bigots (hence that fact 100% of Boston talk radio is right wing). But all the doomsday scenarios the local right wingers claimed would occour if we allowed gay marriage never happned.

All the right wingers did waslook for different groups of people to hate-most of them are now off spewing hate against immigrants.

Gay bashers who cite how gay marriage is wrong because 'the purpose of marriage is for a man and woman to produce offsping' clearly have great hatred of women,as they seem to regard women as animals- as little more than breeding stock.

One of my children is gay. Hasn't destroyed the family yet. I also told her I'm going to question her potential mate to make sure she's a good match for my daughter. I promised I wouldn't embarrass her...that much :-)

They're training them to be equally repulsive right now! Ah, the miracle of birth....

prop 8 supporters have been attacked while handing out signs, rallies in southern california have become outright violent in nature, Personally i am for prop 8 and i have been personally discriminated against for my veiws, While praying outside of an abortion clinic i have gotten many vulgar slurs thrown at me and one lady even took a swing at me! Its human nature to be upset and both sides need to control there tempers bc neither are right now!

Please name ONE prop 8 supporter who has been KILLED, MURDERED, SLAIN, MADE DEAD!!!! by a gay or straight prop 8 opponent!!!!

Go to this link
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hG2ROkGvKzk&fe...

to see over 100 faces of people who HAVE been KILLED by people who thought they were RIGHT based on their feelings and false beliefs about these murder vistims' sexual orientation!!! HATE is HATE, and it isn't always expressed with murder but also with legislation and words!

THIS is "scarey"? IMAGINE the fear that when through the mind of a gay young man named Matthew Sheppard and the minds of the many many more like him as he was beaten and left on a fence to die!!
Watch some of the videos of the lynchings in the south or black men drug to their deaths behind cars for saying hello to a white woman and the videos of civil rights rallies where people are beaten with sticks and trampled by horses...that is probably what it will take for the hatemongors who insist on spreading the venim against gays to stop as it...it is our history. Hate spreads and death and true violence is perpertrated to both sides...
What we see here is simply rage being vented...true violence KILLS! It hurts more than our ears!
