Infamous prosecutor Ken Starr has filed a legal brief -- on behalf of the "Yes on 8" campaign -- to nullify the 18,000 same-sex marriages performed in California between May and November of 2008.
Yes, they really did go there after promising repeatedly not to do this.
It's time to put a face to Ken Starr's shameful legal proceedings. To put a face to the 18,000 couples facing forcible divorce. To put a face to marriage equality. Because, gay or straight, YOU are the face of the Marriage Equality Movement.
The Courage Campaign just launched "Please Don't Divorce" a community photo project. They will break your heart and have made me cry on more than one occasion.

I'm going to sound a bit crass here, but has anyone ever done scientific research into the phenomenon of lesbian couples? I'm of course talking about the phenomenon in which in the coupled relationship, theres the lesbian that is more male-like in their personality, and the female thats very feminine in their personality? I just think its an odd coincidence.

As an American citizen who is gay, it tears my heart out that gays and lesbians are relegated to second class citizenship by the tyranny of the majority. Here in Arizona, we put up a valiant fight against overwhelming odds and lost. I hope in California they are able to defeat the forces of tyranny in the guise of "family values". Since when is it a "family value" to rip apart families?

I really hope and pray that these heinous, outrageous and downright evil people will get every misfortune they deserve. The video made me cry because the couples were so beautiful and full of love, yet because of small minded fucksticks, they are begging not to have their unions split.
I'm 31, my husband is 38. He is white, I am black. Just a few years before he was born, our marriage would have been illegal in a lot of states. That wasn't right and neither is this. There should be no question of gay people's ability to marry. I'm not talking bullshit civil unions/ partnerships, but full-on marriage. Banning marriage licenses for gay people makes as much sense as banning driving licenses for gay people.
One of the crap-ass arguments the fundies use regarding gay people is that the unions don't last. I watched some of those videos and at least 2 of the couples have been married longer than I have been on the planet, and scores had been together for 15+ years. How long did Britney's marriages last? Marriage is so sacred that one can get married for $20 by an Elvis impersonator in a drive-in ceremony.
Lastly, I am willing to bet my paycheck that a lot of the kids that were begging for their parents not to be split up were adopted, and I saw plenty of interracial adoptions there. Seems to me that the more gay people that marry and decide to have children, there will be fewer kids in the system. I wish you the best PJ and all others who are denied this basic human right.
I hope that within our lifetimes that prejudice and discrimination against gay people will be so unacceptable to our society that posts like yours will no longer be necessary.
Irregardless of the cost, we must continue to press on for equity and justice for all. If we don't accomplish it in our lifetimes, then perhaps future generations will look back at us as the compassionate and caring people who dared to stand up to hatred to embrace the common humanity that binds us all together.

Ken knows in his heart he's gay but uses a front as most old timers to. Ken would feel much better if he just came out and take pride in the fact he's gay. Watching him on Barbara Walter's interview made it clear he was a gay man living in secret.
Our youngest boy has recently turned 16, and has been living with our best guy friends since last March. He's officially an apprentice on their Arabian ranch in NM, but truly is a member of their family now... sure, I miss him, but he has so much more he can accomplish there than he does here. I have some nice (to me) backyard Arabians, but they have Nationals qualifiers and my son is learning so much! And it isn't only about horses.

We need to put Catholic and religious rights up for ballot iniciatives. Pass or not at least the church bigots would get a taste of what it feels like to have their rights up for majority vote. Not that anyone is born Christian, Catholic or Mormon. No one is born a religious bigot they are taught to be one. The fastest way to a truly free America for all citizens is to overthrow organized religion in this country. The problem with Prop 8 is that it didn't go far enough. It should have included "No divorce for anyone, either heterosexual or gay". If the proponents of Prop 8 are so very concerned with raising children, then they would support "no divorce" because divorce is painful for children.
Logic never comes into he discussion with these sons of bitches.
How about a proposition that states that children cannot be raised in a religion until they reach their 18th birthday. Reason: children are forced into a religion by adults which could be considered a form of child abuse. (sarc off/)

I think that Ken Starr and Karl Rove would make a great couple. They look so similar and have very similar behaviour and attitude.
I completely agree this is a scumbag move by conservatives BUT could it backfire on them? This will go to the courts where the rights of the minority tend to get more favorable treatment than when put to popular vote. Personally, I would think conservatives would want to avoid the courts and those dreaded "activist judges" at all costs, especially now that they've got what they wanted. Seems to me that their greed for more may be their undoing. If prop 8 makes it to the Supreme Court, they may lose it all. Just a thought.
Yes, For those non-gays who want a divorce, we have to pay $500+ in court fees alone. Only in America will they charge those who want to divorce divorce cheating spouses who abandon you, but forcibly divorce couples in love.

There is something wrong with the right wing idiots who can't envision anyone other than their white bread friends experiencing love and caring. Come to think of it . . . most of them have no idea what a real relationship is like, that doesn't depend on either Jesus or vodka or both.
If Starr and ilk try this, it will eventually be overturned, as will Prop 8, as unConstitutional. Prop 8 violates several provisions of the US Constitution, including equal rights provisions and - as regards forced divorce - the prohibition against bills of attainder. Also, no state can craft any law that violates any protections and rights granted by the Constitution.
I'm betting that by the time the last challenges have been heard in the Supreme Court, even with the ultra-conservative majority, that gay marraige will be deemed legal in all 50 states and territories. If that doesn't happen, the Constitution truly will be just a meaningless piece of paper.

We need a court with jurisdiction to overturn it. Which means it is out of the hands of the state supreme court. Ripping apart families is certainly a hell of a lot of legal standing for the case going forward, but it would have been there regardless.
You can't void them but you can not recognize them. They would be legally married but the state of California would not recognize it, just as we wouldn't recognize a marriage from MA. If and when gay marriage is relegalized (there's a sound constitutional argument and near majority of voters to make it a matter of time) those marriages go back on the books without needing new marriage licenses. -- Why anybody suspected it was different than the obvious legal ramifications escapes me.
Just come to Canada. We're in better economic shape, we still have a functioning democracy, we have universal healthcare and we have marginally adequate gun control.
