In the middle of a heated debate with Newt Gingrich over foreign policy, Ron Paul spoke up with the one platform plank I agree with him on: Quit warmongering, stop going to war, and treat other nations like we want to be treated.

Unfortunately, the audience in South Carolina disagreed with Rep. Paul, booing and shouting at him, though it felt a bit disjointed to hear them turn around and cheer him saying we don't need any more wars.

He said maybe we should use the Golden Rule as our foreign policy...and then there were boos. Yikes.

The ones that call themselves Christians. Lip service is so damned easy, and they reveal themselves daily. More and more I think we are on a collision course in this country from fascism. I know that word has been pretty much worn out and maybe it has lost a lot of its power, but I am 56 years old, and I have never seen this kind of rhetoric, and I am a bit worried.

MarkOfOhio's picture

I have urged my young niece and nephew to make plans to leave America for a more enlightened country when the iron boot of corporate fascism comes down for real. "America" as we knew it and dreamed of it is dead. Ahead lies fascism and theocracy.

A country like Sweden has much better health care, more enlightened politics, and smarter and happier people than we have here. By comparison, America looks like a dangerous far-out religious cult bristling with nuclear weapons. I don't feel like it's my country any more.

Our downward spiral began in earnest with the Reagan Disaster and has been accelerating ever since. We don't have much time left as a democracy, if we still are one today.

I will indeed start plans to leave immediately. It's not as hard as many think.

That explanation is that republicans really, honestly DO feel that IOKIYAR. The reason that American exceptionalism ranks so high on their meter is that they feel that there is one law for them and a totally different law for everyone else. And they quite frankly admit it and wonder why other people don't see how exceptional they are. This comes from knowing that whatever god they worship has blessed them and given them special knowledge while condemning everyone else.

to republicans people that aren't like them and people they don't have to meet personally aren't really people and their reasons for doing things spark no interest whatsoever unless they are doing what the eliminationists want. they are sociopathic. they lack the ability to empathize with anyone they see as "different." just the mere existence of others makes them play victim before they lash out. if someone doesn't say merry christmas around christmas they act as though they have been infringed upon. they are every bit as twisted as muslim jihadists, they just lack the conviction to do the dirty work themselves. they want to watch tv shows about weapons and previous wars and then watch romanticized hollywood movies about it. then they want someone else's kid to go do it. people that cheer corpse desecration? seriously. what do you do when 25% of the country is ignorant and 25% is ignorant and crazy?

The conservatives actually believe we were minding our own business on September 11, 2001. They think muslims are all out to kill us and take over our country. They have been convinced that we are an innocent, benevolent nation that gives away gobs of money and no one appreciates us for it. They believe we must occupy Afghanistan or the Taliban will invade us and rape our women (and young boys).

These endless lies that have been perpetrated upon us have poisoned any chance of rational debate about foreign policy. Ron Paul is never going to convince the conservatives that the truth is their government is hell bent on world domination. They do not understand what imperialism means. They believe that we can grow crops better than indiginous people, that oil refineries are good for other countries and that any tin pot dictator is a good person as long as they use the dollar and let us flood their markets with cheap products.

Ron Paul is wasting his time trying to convince these morally depraved idiots. He's a joke. That audience looked like they were on the set of "America's Funniest Home Videos".

"Someday somebody related to some of these sufferers, these victims, these collaterally damaged souls, may try to kill you. And I have to tell you, I think you’ll have it coming." - Christopher Cooper

Dradeeus's picture

It's unfortunate, but most of his ideas are just extreme "doubling down" of conservative ideas. When it comes to believing the government is in between us and "freedom" (read: anarchy/corporatocracy), he feels right at home in Republicanland.

I'd love a leader choice that believed this incredibly sane version of events leading up to 9/11 -and- didn't want to destroy regulation and leave things to the almighty free market.

How very Christian of them to boo the Golden Rule. These self-proclaimed Christians don't follow an iota of what their good Book tells them to or what Jesus taught. Christianity today is nothing more than the lip service of the label and going to church once a week. Period. It no longer involves acting like Jesus or doing what he taught, but merely calling yourself a Christian and attending service intermittently. They have no morals other than screw the poor and screw Islam. You know, just like Jesus taught!

linus bern's picture

More than anything I have ever heard, this is conservative thought in a nutshell. They are offended by the idea of treating other people like they want to be treated. Anything that doesn't tilt the playing field in their favor, to the detriment of everyone else is unacceptable. Its why the notion of civil rights is so anathema to them.

The other day I was thinking about that Dana Loesch creature cheering marines urinating on Taliban corpses. Presumably if the Taliban were urinating on the corpses of their enemies, (i.e. americans) that would be an intolerable barbarity. Americans can do it because they are special. They are the pinnacle of civilization, and decency. And to prove their superiority, they get to urinate on the corpses of their enemies.

Despite the noises we sometimes hear to the contrary (seems to come in cycles), this is not a Christian nation. A Christian nation would turn the other cheek, be kind and generous to the poor, and when asked for a bushel of corn would give that and throw in a bushel of wheat on top of it. The religious right seems to have a big problem with implementing the teachings of Jesus in their own lives and communities. They like prosperity doctrine, which teaches that the wealthy are blessed, over the Biblical doctrine that the poor are blessed and not the wealthy.

For the record, I don't think a "turn the other cheek" foreign policy would be actually good for America. There is a good middle ground between that and our current policy, which is to punch anyone who seems to be looking at us funny and getting all up into everyone else's business. But it doesn't surprise me that Republicans would boo Paul for saying this.

European Christians that came to the new world to subjugate and wipe out the native populations and steal their land and resources. I think you may be confused about what Christianity is. If God makes you the chosen people, then, well, do what you have to do, or want to do, as the Israelis do, and the Iranians, etc.

The problem is monotheism, which leads to things like all the holy wars of the past and present (and future), because some cloud being has "chosen" you, or us, or someone else. The problem is primitive views and beliefs about reality. And talk about primitive, South Carolina is neck and neck with Oklahoma, Mississippi and a few other choice and very ignorant states in the race to the bottom. Look at the politicians SC produces. Their only hope is Stephen Colber(t).

yakfitguy's picture

You mean the hypochristians?

"Do unto others....as much as you can!"

I don't believe in God. Teach a man to be a good citizen and you have solved the problem of life.
-Andrew Carnegie

skeith's picture

The problem with Christianity is not, IMHO, monotheism, but the focus on the afterlife. Any number of heinous acts can be excused with the reasoning that it saves the victim's immortal soul and allows it into heaven. Better to die in agony on Earth and live forever in glory, after all, than to live a normal human life in comfort and spend eternity in hell.

If monotheism were the problem, then Hinduism should be the perfect religion, since it has as many deities as you want. But Hinduism also teaches that important things happen outside the living world, and this causes issues. Low-caste individuals deserve to be poor and ill-treated, or so it is said, because they either earned their way into that status with evil deeds in a previous life, or else are working their way up and must suffer to earn a better caste in their next life. Either way, there is nothing immoral about treating a low-caste person like dirt in this (very polytheistic) religion.

But this is neither here nor there. The fact is that the basic message of Jesus is not followed by the supposedly Christian United States. While I would not try to advance a no-true-Scotsman argument, I think it takes more to be a Christian than just calling yourself one.

MarkOfOhio's picture

Name-calling is not practicing the Golden Rule.

Some people in this thread not only disagreed with the booing of the Golden Rule (as do I) but in the process tried to demonize the members of the debate audience with the following terms:

“filthy, “ “immature little 2-year-olds,” “worthless people,” “inhuman animals,” “psychopaths,” “sociopaths” “really sick people,” “white inbreds in sc,” “psychotic cancer on this once-great nation.”

This is a fallacy called "argumentum ad hominem," that is, attacking the person rather than analyzing and discrediting their opinions. It is not an effective debating technique. It will not persuade people who disagree with you. It may help puff up your sense of superiority, but how does that accord with the Golden Rule.

If you don't want a civil society, if you don't want to win arguments, if you have no empathy or compassion for the wrong-headed folks who booed the Golden Rule, then keep calling people names, but don't pretend you believe in the Golden Rule.

See, it's that part about "puff up your sense of superiority" that gives you away. There is no "sense" of superiority for those that believe in the golden rule (which is arguably the most fundamental of human rules of behavior), over those that do not; the believers are factually superior.
Also, it should be pointed out that this comment section does not represent a "debate" with those that booed the Golden rule, so your point is asinine to begin with.
It seems to me that you are suggesting that sane, rational, compassionate people should treat sociopaths with dignity and respect, even if those sociopaths are advocating actions that may result in the destruction of our society, and even if those sociopaths aren't in the fucking room.
