BoldProgressives.org has sent out the following letter to their membership:

People are outraged that Senate Democrats are lining up against a public health insurance option supported by 76% of Americans -- all while taking $80 million of health and insurance industry money.

So we decided to do something about it. We made a TV ad calling them out. And now we're inviting you (and your friends) to put your name in the ad before we air it in Washington DC!

This ad will air on CNN, MSNBC, The Daily Show, and other places that these senators and their staffers will be sure to notice. We'll continually rotate new names in. Please help this idea grow by passing this email on to anyone you think would like to add their name.

Together, we'll make the Senate listen to the vast majority of Americans who say: "We want the public option!" Thanks for being a bold progressive.

If you're interested in putting your name--literally--on this ad, please go to WeWantThePublicOption.com and add your name to the list. The people need all the voices we can get on the public option and I applaud BoldProgressives for making this great ad and allowing citizens to get involved.

To me it is unconscionable that we have to push Democrats to vote for an issue that SHOULD be a staple of their party. If they let us down, we'll have to fight them at the ballot box and replace them with people who will do the right thing for their constituents.

I'm on, no hesitation!

the prospect of a single payer system- however elusive it presently seems- will always be my ultimate destination.

Bold progressive my ass.

We want single payer!

Hope against hope- maybe this step is what Rethugs might refer to as the slippery slope toward the ultimate desired goal....

Where's "We Want Single Payer.com"???

I'll sign that!

Former Insurance Industry Insider Tells All

The Health Insurance Industry v. Health Care Reform

By WENDELL POTTER at Counterpunch

here

excerpt (emphasis added):

I also have seen how the industry's practices -- especially those of the for-profit insurers that are under constant pressure from Wall Street to meet their profit expectations -- have contributed to the tragedy of nearly 50 million people being uninsured as well as to the growing number of Americans who, because insurers now require them to pay thousands of dollars out of their own pockets before their coverage kicks in -- are underinsured. An estimated 25 million of us now fall into that category.

What I saw happening over the past few years was a steady movement away from the concept of insurance and toward "individual responsibility," a term used a lot by insurers and their ideological allies. This is playing out as a continuous shifting of the financial burden of health care costs away from insurers and employers and onto the backs of individuals. As a result, more and more sick people are not going to the doctor or picking up their prescriptions because of costs. If they are unfortunate enough to become seriously ill or injured, many people enrolled in these plans find themselves on the hook for such high medical bills that they are losing their homes to foreclosure or being forced into bankruptcy.

As an industry spokesman, I was expected to put a positive spin on this trend that the industry created and euphemistically refers to as "consumerism" and to promote so-called "consumer-driven" health plans. I ultimately reached the point of feeling like a huckster.

……

[people had to] wait in long lines to be treated in animal stalls was because our Wall Street-driven health care system has created one of the most inequitable health care systems on the planet.

read on, it is a good one (about the bad wall street crooks driving the 'health care' crooks)…

...but a WeWantASinglePayerSystem.com would've been better.

...a public option is shit and just comprimise that will accomplish nothing in the end.

If this were put out by "bold progessives" they would be pushing for universal. If they do that, I'll add my name in a second.

If there is a public option from which folks can choose, and it is less expensive with equivalent or better outcomes than a private option, which do you think folks will choose?

I too would prefer a single payer system for all, but given the political realities in this screwed up nation of ours, I think we can kill the private insurance industries with all their inherent problems and contradictions if the public option is executed intelligently. I think the bigger issue will be making sure the public option is not crippled in ways that doom it to failure.

...they are STARTING with a public option and will comprimise from that point. That means that the final bill will be so fucking watered down that it will be sure to fail. Ultimately, don't you think that's what Baucus and his ilk want; failure of a public plan?

I'm sorry, but anything other than universal will fail and it will be another 50 years before we even talk about it again.

And I will consider the Obama administration a total failure if we don't have a STRONG public option. I agree though entirely. They should be starting with single payer. Starting negotiations without single payer is like starting with the very least that I can accept. It can't be a surprise to anybody why the Republicans have been so succesful at portraying Democrats as weak and spineless. They ARE for the most part. It seems to me that the Democratic Party is much more determined to bring the GOP back into power than the Republicans are.

...point Margaret. Obama is so concerned about bipartisanship with the party that shoots itself in the foot every damn day and has reduced itself to absolute insignificance. Why? They don't give a damn about the country or their constituents (some dems too for that matter) and they should just be ignored and allowed to die an ignominious death. I just can't figure out why the dems aren't taking advantage of being in power. It's as though they are terrified of becoming the only party in town.

Fuck bipartisanship. fuck the gop...etc etc....
We have the majority. Obama has the political capitol AND the charisma...
He could push single payer through without the fuckin repuke bastards!

...,the system bog down...Must add it to what is there and make the insurance/HMOs compete!

The Gov't will have to force their hand along with the taxpayer!

Obama just wants the Congress to do their job--write the laws---it is not about partisenship...It is about solutions! Call Congress 1.800.828.0498...tell them to get off their thumbs!

If we don't get a single payer now it will not happen. The public option is billed as a compromise, but it won't work. They will make the rules so that it will not compete on a level playing field and then in a few years when the rep have some power they will call it a failed experiment in big government and get rid of it.

Single payer or nothing. F the GOP we won the election.

I'm in, if its not, I'm not.

Will never happen in the USofBLOODYISRAEL. Remember how Hillary was going to be the healthcare heroine when her husband took office?????? Rememeber how the insurers talked turkey to her and told her that they were also AMERIKANS and needed to be able to 'compete'?????? Seems like the same things were said to President Lincoln about how northern manufacturers couldn't 'compete' with the south because of the slaves. Ho hum $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$makes the world go 'round.

to foreclose forever the possibility of a universal, single-payer health plan for the citizens of the US.

This is the Obama-appointed Secretary of the Department of Health & Human Services.

Can it get ANY clearer?

"thePrez" and his satraps, minions, and lick-spittles DO NOT GIVE A ROSY RED FUCK ABOUT YOUR HEALTH.

Get it?

at least until you run out of money....

Anyhow, I am giving Mr. Obama the benefit of the doubt until he says what he has to say in the townhall meeting coming up. Even though I know what he is going to pull, I will give him that benefit of the doubt until then.

Not here

I don't really want my name on television but on the other hand, health care and climate change are what I'm judging this administration on and if I can help advance those goals even a tiny bit, well I feel it's my duty to do so.

Let us count the ways.

As ever,

U.S. Government

Never underestimate peoples ability to screw things up on this planet.

I'd really rather have Single Payer HEALTHCARE then 'public option' INSURANCE!!!

What is needed is UNIVERSAL, SINGLE-PAYER HEALTH CARE.

As long as the profit motive is in play, there will never be any reason to provide it. And MILLION$$$$$ of reasons to oppose it...

Medicare for all would mean you have health insurance but not necessarily health care. Doctors already limit the number of medicare patients they accept and/or are not taking new medicare patients. Since you can keep your already existing private insurance (surely its better than medicare) as Obama says, doctors will still have the same number of higher paying privately insured patients. What incentives do doctors have to 1)take on more patients at all when most already work 50-60+ hours a week and 2)they will be poorly reimbursed from these new patients?

Please someone who advocates medicare for all tell me!

What a damned laugh.

There isn't a bold Progressive in America if you are agreeing to the Public-Option over Single Payer, Not-For-Profit.

Bold Progressives?

What a damned laugh.

...someone to check into this organization and see who is running it. A "public option" is far from progessive, much less "bold" progressive.

BuelahMan

Come to the party earlier.

here & here

and a previous one here

"If they let us down, we'll have to fight them at the ballot box and replace them with people who will do the right thing for their constituents."

With more Dems?

"If they let us down, we'll have to fight them at the ballot box and replace them with people who will do the right thing for their constituents."

With more Dems?

...the article and sent this:

To Whom it may concern:

I have to tell you that I'm sorely disappointed in your stand on the health care debate. You can't seriously consider yourselves "bold progressives" if you aren't supporting some form of universal health care. If the "public option" is the starting point, the reform we are likely to see by the time it's watered down by compromise in the interest of bipartisanship will be less than useless, leave millions still uninsured and destined to be an abject failure; which is just what Senator Baucus and the other paid off congressmen and women want anyway.

I would consider changing your organization's name to something that doesn't include "progressive". It's really a misnomer.

I'll post what they send me back, if anything.

I actually agree. Dems standing up for a position that 76% of Americans share shouldn't really be considered bold. It's just obvious they should support that as a starting point.

Our campaign here is about sending a signal to Dems -- you screw over those who want you to fight, we'll call you out. It's that simple. That's the boldness. We are the bold ones, not the politicians. I just spearheaded the campaign that got Ben Nelson to shift his position. Every single progressive group I talked to on the ground in Nebraska told us to kill him with kindness. Really? That's a winning strategy? What we did, calling him out for his special-interest contributions was considered impolite. But we did it. And he caved. That was a blueprint.

The PCCC is naming names in this ad and saying how much these politicians got from special interests. Again, that is bold. Nobody in DC does that. It's taboo. Being able to juxtapose that with a 76% number on the other side allows us to rip away any fake talking points they'd throw at us that miss the broader point that we demand accountability. Yesterday, in the NYT, see what I said about Obama and Rahm. I'd argue that's bold.

There is a long term strategy at play here, centered not around any one issue, but around demanding accountability and showing that if you screw with those who want you to fight, you will be called out. We're still on Square 1. I do hope you support that strategy. Because it's a lonely fight and we need those who are up for that fight to be on our side.

ya think it's anything more than just pretty pretty words?

...forth with the guy and I think he really does agree with me. They are calling out these politicians, so if nothing else, at least their electorate is learning how much these politicians care about them. Maybe that will result in getting a few more real progessives in congress. Can only be a good thing.

Then put the home address of the Senators on your "TV ad calling them out."
Then cut to a scene from 'Frankenstein'...you know the one, the scene w/ an angry mob carrying pitchforks and torches!

No single payer? Forget it. I remember when some asshole 'friend' of mine told me, if I wanted to marry, I would have to 'settle.' I will never 'settle' for less than what's right. This PO thing is just a manufactured piece of shite to suck support AWAY from single payer.

"Throw the dog a bone already!" - The US Government.

Hell no.

Please someone who advocates medicare for all tell me!

for little to no value added. That 40% cost could be used to train more medical professionals, add more doctors to the system, medical equipment... you get where this is going.

If anything, single payer/universal health care allows doctors to maintain their salaries with reduced workloads. The only reason why doctors have to take such load of patients right now are:

a) The AMA has limited artificially the supply of medical doctors in this country.
b) Most medical doctors have to pay more in Malpractice insurance that they do in taxes, ergo they need more patients to spread the costs.
c) Insurance companies are in the business of making money, more patients served by fewer doctors are a clear benefit for the bottom line of said companies (I.e. more revenue with less labor force).

Is that clear enough?

This is pretty clear, so using examples of how single payer would solve the problem is irrelevant The public plan option will simply be an extension of medicare...and there will be no incentives for doctors to take on these patients.

...vaguely familiar, but the message is all wrong. Maybe he has another face he puts on from time to time?

But our bought and paid for representitives have millions of reasons to vote against the people.

Here is a list of elected people taking payoffs to cheat the American people and the amounts of bribes being taken. This is just from health care and insurance.
It is mind boggling to think how much these people are taking from others!
Arlen Specter (R-D- PA- $4,026,933)
Max Baucus (DLC- MT- $2,833,731)
Mitch McConnell (R-KY- $2,758,468)

And when you just go right to Big Insurance, the non-presidential candidates who got the biggest legalized bribes were the 7 senators who have been tasked with the job of killing single-payer:

Ben Nelson (DLC-NE- $1,196,799)
Max Baucus (DLC- MT- $1,184,113)
Joe Lieberman (DLC- CT- $1,036,302)
Arlen Specter (R-D- PA- $1,035,530)
Chuck Schumer (D-NY- $981,400)
Mitch McConnell (R-KY- $929,207)
Chuck Grassley (R-IA- $884,724)

We need to investigate and prosecute these criminals now. Severe jail terms are in order for these criminals!
republicanism is a mental illness!

We'll get single payer when the public option kills the insurance companies. They will probably still exist for the filthy rich but most Americans will eventually be able to turn to a single payer, the government, for their private doctors. Government will never run medicine like the repug liars keep repeating like stupid parrots.

Single payer! Single payer!
