Krugman: The End Of The Monster Years

krugmanbig1012_08409.jpg

I got chills reading this brief, but very truthful op-ed from Paul Krugman at the New York Times. Barack Obama's win last night was just one step into the future, lets hope Krugman's words ring loud and clear for future generations - Beware the Monsters...

Last night wasn’t just a victory for tolerance; it wasn’t just a mandate for progressive change; it was also, I hope, the end of the monster years.

What I mean by that is that for the past 14 years America’s political life has been largely dominated by, well, monsters. Monsters like Tom DeLay, who suggested that the shootings at Columbine happened because schools teach students the theory of evolution. Monsters like Karl Rove, who declared that liberals wanted to offer “therapy and understanding” to terrorists. Monsters like Dick Cheney, who saw 9/11 as an opportunity to start torturing people.

And in our national discourse, we pretended that these monsters were reasonable, respectable people. To point out that the monsters were, in fact, monsters, was “shrill.”! Read on...

The monsters are still all there, they have simply fallen out of favor,at least for now.

of a word for them. I would use the evil incarnates.

I think it's a safe bet that as long as Darth Cheney draws breath, he will be doing evil things. Same for all of these other neo-con creeps. We must never take our eyes off of them, for they will lurk and strike whenever they believe they can create more fear and grab power and wealth for themselves.

are all getting gigs or guest spots on fox. And they are breeding as we speak. (shivers)

Limbaugh who claimed Abu Greb was like Club Med,and the torture there was simply young guys "kidding around" and "blowing off some steam".

How about "disrespectful cowards?"

Like the sniveling fucks sporting the band-aids with purple hearts?

You know, the ones who mocked a soldier named Kerry?

The same ones who would pee their dough-filled pants at the prospect of having to face peril...

that purple heart mockery was really scraping bottom.

Remember, many of these monsters came from previous Republican administrations (where they honed their "monster"-hood) and many of them will show up in a future Republican administration, ready to wreak havoc all over again.

....in our national discourse, we pretended that these monsters were reasonable, respectable people. To point out that the monsters were, in fact, monsters, was “shrill.”

And THIS was humiliating for America, from Abu Ghraib to Guantanamo to telecom immunity to illegal surveillance. We all knew they were monsters and said it repeatedly, with agitation and fury. Either nobody in the MSM paid attention or they were too scared to report this "citizen unrest". A bunch of chickens, if you ask me.

were said for McCain's election, and he lost. It's either that the Evangelical's god doesn't exist, or he doesn't share their politics.

This will fire up the remaining GOP psychopaths in the Congress and transform them into howling suicide bombers.

While the remaining GOP lunatics in the Congress denounce Obama as a Marxist or a terrorist, their stormtroopers, the Adkisson Brigades, led by Field Marshal Talibunny will go bonkers and attack symbols of 'liberalism' and stage false-flag attacks to convince voters that Obama's terrorism-friendly administration is inviting attacks from Al Qaeda.

Then in 2010 elections the RNC will bankroll a bunch of new paleo- and psycho-conservative freaks who'll attack everything the Democrats propose as 'satanic'.

Tom Delay will get a full-time job on Fox News and will rave 4-10 hours every day that Obama's Islamofascist hatred for America will be its downfall. The GOP congresscritters will watch him in their offices and go into ever floor debate fired up for righteous confrontation with the agents of satan.

yes

Fox'll ratchet up the hate to "whites of their eyeballs" levels and the whole groaning stinking machinery will be strapped to Obama's back in about..hmm..a week?Yarghhh!!!!!!!!!! Kill HIM!!!!!

... on the public airwaves?

We have a long long way to go before we are acceptable monster free. Michele Bachman was re-elected, Rush limbaugh and Michael Savage are still on the air waves after saying that the story about Obama's grandmother was phony and was really going to Hawaii to "fix" his birth certificate. Bill O'Reilly and Shaun Hannity are still on the air when it is almost impossible to find any truth in any of their shows. How many of the media and political people were and still are pushing the phony ACORN story? There are way to many acceptable monsters, this election just rid us of a few.

With any luck, these banshees will continue their verbal assault on every good thing the Democrats try to do, ensuring a veto-proof majority in 2010.

are at least useful for predicting funerals.

commentary. I was taken aback for a second by it's brevity. But,actually it's all that needs to be said. I termed them 'The Thugs' early on,and still use that term today and I always will. But,as has been stated the Thugs will always be there, lurking under the pondscum of thier equally ugly mouth breathing aplogists-we all know thier names.Light has a hard time shining through filth. It's time to break out the 'industrial strength cleaners'.

GOODBYE NECONS.

I've been watching a lot of Fox News today. They cannot pounce with full force till January but they will pounce. When they do, we beat them back and flush more of them out in 2010 till they're gone for good.

Conservatives are powerless right now, so they're afraid, cornered and ready to attack. When they do, we push back harder than ever before.

Let's end this, and with President Obama, we're a long way into winning this war.

It is a mistake to consider the neocons powerless or gone.

They still own the ProfitMedia and will slant EVERYTHING that they "report".

Fairness Statutes or some kind of equal time for other viewpoints is essential to a democracy; we've seen this for years - now is the time to act.

with C&L's new design, but to make clear, they are powerless now and I reiterate the need to fight them harder than EVER when they regroup and are ready to strike again.

Oh, and after watching Fox today, I pray and hope Obama and his administration continues to brush them off along with other neocon outlets like the Washington Times and the Post. Fuck them. They don't deserve the time of day

..William Bennett still has a regular gig at CNN as an analyst and panelist.
Kristol was already contracted to FOX, so my guess is that they needed to settle for him to maintain wingnut credibility with the minority of their viewers.

We may have won this round but this is an important warning about not relaxing and being eternally vigilant.

That wherever Paul Krugman is, it's always snowing?

Obama's face and body language reflected how humbled he was and the fact hitting hard of what he had inherited. One holy mess. Not the least of which are those 'monsters' who will hound his heels for the next(hopefully) 8 years. He knows. He knows.

I suspect that Obama's plan is to rally the people behind him and use that popular support to put the fear into Congressmen who might not otherwise support him. Reagan did this quite effectively and was able to get much of his agenda passed despite the House remaining in Democratic hands for all 8 years. If Obama can get off to a good start and quickly build up broad popular support then he can banish (though not vanquish) the monsters. The fact that Obama is already rounding up his cabinet is and indication of both the dire straits of the country and his knowledge that he needs to maintain the initiative.

I just had a strange revelation:

On January 20, 2009 there will be a transfer of power between two men of such disparate IQs that you could fit an entire normal person between them.

ABOUT FLIPPIN' TIME!! :))))

Odd

I was wondering who they'd get to serve as translator on that very occasion.

They should get Tickle Me Elmo if he's got the day available.

No shit!

No, they are lurking in my television and on the radio and in the newspapers and at places like red state and malkin and little green footballs and stormfront etc... blah blah ad nauseum. Oh, and they are in the churches and the schools and the state legislature and corporate boardrooms and country clubs yadda yadda bok a bok .....

With Bush, Cheney and the whole neocon cabal strapped to gurneys in Huntsville after a short, decisive trial.

The monsters never go away. They have to be terminated.

Watch any Alien movie and you'll be well instructed on how to manage relationships with neocon mobsters.

from where these slime balls dribble gapes still.

Krugman is a great American. His article "The Death of Horatio Alger" changed my view of America forever.

The pic you used makes his hair look funny. Here is a better one.

I rate him right up there with Sam Clemons, Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, to name just a few. What can I say? The man is an absolute genius, a cultural/political Einstein. A generation is very fortunate indeed if it produces even one man of his caliber.

I like Krugman but his analysis is shallow. These folks aren't monsters or evil or anything of the sort. They're sick. DeLay, Cheney and others of their ilk suffer from sociopathy or antisocial personality disorder. They lack empathy or sympathy. It's not that they don't care - they can't care. Others like Limbaugh are plainly paranoid. Their fears have taken over their lives and because of their positions of authority and exposure, their delusions often become contagious.

If we are ever to get the upper hand on such negativity, we have to call it as it is and realize how ill these people really are. And as long as they are in the spotlight, they will act as a drag on our progress. We need to get them the help they need and off the airwaves where they feed the mental illness of others.

.... doesn't mean that you're not a monster.

Unfortunately for us, there are 56 million voters out there ready to welcome the monsters into their homes and keep them alive until the next election cycle. Our monsters aren't going away anytime soon.

I know that Krugman couldn't list all the monsters that need to be vanquished, but I'd put Newt Gingrich at the front of the line. And he still thinks he can run for president.

These monsters aren't going to go away. Millions of Americans support them and what they stand for.

This election didn't help us turn a corner, but it got us part was around a curve. We need to keep a firm, steady hand on the wheel and step on the gas to get to the promise of what Obama has started.

There have always been monsters, and there will always be monsters. The difference over the last 14 years is that the American people let fear convince them that the monsters they knew were better than the monsters they didn't know, and so the monsters they knew were free to emerge from the darkness.

Don't kid yourselves, people. These monsters were always taking lives... and they are not all Republican. From El Salvador, Chile, Haiti, Panama, by supporting Saddam, the Taliban... their sins are countless, and unless other criminals they will never face justice. They, like Kissinger and Pinochet, will live their lives in peace and harmony, undisturbed by the hundreds, and thousands whose death they caused.

I would like to request that "Nobel Laureate" be added to his title, just to make the point that the Nobel Prize winner in Economics is saying this stuff.

The REALLY BAD thing about this election is that it showed HOW ROTTEN America had to get before we could try to fix it! WHY the fuck did Americans put up with these monsters for so LONG? Why didn't we impeach Bush years ago? Why did we NOT have the courage and moral fiber to DO something instead of sitting on our fat hammy asses for 8 years and watch Dancing with the Fucking Stars while America went to hell and the Constitution was shredded and tens of thousands of people died? Why didn't somebody bitch-slap Pelosi and tell her "No, Impeachment IS ON THE TABLE!" Why isn't Rice in jail for ignoring a Federal Subpoena? Or Gonzales? Or Meirs? WTF ????

Don't forget monster Newt Gingrich who couldn't even set partisan politics aside in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 but instead blamed Bill Clinton.

)O(

I have been shocked time and again at the immoral and illegal depths these creatures have been able sink to. It's gotten so I feel they are capable of anything. How do we keep them from surreptitiously taking out our beacon of hope before he is sworn in, and instituting martial law in response to the ensuing civil unrest? The chance to stay in power and the KBR/Halliburton profits on that prospective contract would surely have them salivating. Please, someone tell me why they couldn't do that and I'll sleep better.
