72 Hours For Clean American Power
Starting today, for the next three days, dozens of groups--including Repower America, Environment America, NWF, Sierra Club, EDF, WWF-- across a wide range of constituencies are calling the Senate to demand they pass comprehensive clean energy and climate legislation as part of the 72 Hours for Clean American Power national call-in campaign. From their site:
America's dependence on foreign oil hurts our economy, our nation's security and the health of our planet. By investing in a clean energy future now, we can create millions of jobs, reduce our dependence on foreign oil, and tackle climate change -- all at the same time.
We can do it by passing comprehensive clean energy and climate legislation – now.
Americans from all walks of life are joining together to call their senators and demand passage of comprehensive clean energy and climate legislation.
The time is now. We cannot wait any longer. Make the call.

I wish more citizen journalists would speak out about the potential energy and economic benefits of the hemp plant as far as fuel goes etc, and the option to...
Replace all coal and natural gas plants with liquid fluoride thorium reactors. Build so many of these that we finally achieve the "too cheap to meter" promise of nuclear power.
And teach high school students about the work and goals of Nikola Tesla.

But getting the Senate to do anything, except renewing bush-era legislation, seems futile at this time.

Anyone here seen this piece on 60 minutes about this new contraption...
It's made of ink, beach sand, and an inexpensive metal alloy...and it might one day provide all the power in your home.

I'm always skeptical, but will check it out. Thanks.

It has pros and cons. Wiki has a decent discussion on the subject. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solid_oxide_fuel... I would point out that the cost of prototypes bloom is operating of seven to eight hundred thousand dollars makes the power prohibitively expensive considering the relatively short life of the units.

We still need to figure out Who Killed the Electric Car. All the good and good intentions in the world won't matter unless we confront and counter the evil bastards who are stopping us from the other side.

to make it work killed the electric car but we soon may be able to remedy that.

You cite foreign oil specifically but in fact there is no clean fossil fuel.
Everyday the sun bestows on the earth 20,000 the amount of energy we use from fossil fuels, we are unable to harness it.
And, the greatest advance would come from conservation. Jimmy Carter was the last US President to use that word, everyone since has noticed what it got him. Out of office.
statusquObama, change you can only pretend in
Did anyone else get bombarded by "clean" coal ads during the Olympic Winter games? Loved how they claimed it was a great source of energy since it helped us get off of foreign oil and it was oh so clean.
I wonder how much President Obama is going to push for this nonsense as well.
and talkin about lots more nukes (plants not bombs) also.

I am just SO glad about how this hopey changey thing is workin out.
Man you would have thought I tried to kill them or something. All i said was we need to stop using coal. They started screaming jobs, all the people know how to do here is mine coal.
This place will die without coal. They won't listen to the fact that it won't happen tomorrow that it will take some time. I was called a socialist, a bleeding heart liberal. You cannot talk to these people.
You can't fix stupid!
republicanism/conservatism is a mental illness and it has destroied our economy, our morality, and the intelligence of 40 million Americans!
disappear as a primary fuel for electrical generation I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for it to happen anytime soon. As you point out there are a lot of jobs dependent on it and those are jobs that can't be exported. Aside from the massive investment in coal based electrical generation there are huge numbers of jobs in associated industries like mining equipment manufacturing. The best that could be hoped for is progress in carbon sequestration to minimize the impact.

this push done right should change the prospects of our existence.
And let me just add, we need new mindsets not just the blase call the congress.
We need to begin by changing the conversation. Take back america from blowhard school yard bullies in congress under various guises. It would work by challenging the obscurantist climate deniers green economy deniers as anti-america scoundrels, people who just cannot have compassion for the average Joe-Jane eeking out low wages with so many forms of oppression often too late to reverse. The slogan powers the new push. cheers, yall
