Maybe It's Your Duty NOT To Vote--Youth Voter Organization Pushes Back Against John Stossel
By Nicole Belle Monday Oct 13, 2008 9:00amThe Bus Project saw that hacky special by John Stossel suggesting that maybe we shouldn't allow young people the right to vote and they decided that they were mad enough to get even.
Love the correspondent's moustache. So Stossel-like.
You can join The Bus Project to mobilize the youth vote (and hell, encourage people of all ages to get out and vote) and have fun too with their Trick or Vote! campaign.

Stossel and his Stalin mustache are just angry that McCain is going to loose thanks to the youh vote.
makes him look more like the cop from the Village People. Or like that fruitbar Michael Medved. Fab-u-lous.
lol indeed.
As for his hate of the young they're doing most of the living and dying in Bush's war.
The least we can do is let them vote.
And like J Amato said the kids are alright.
opposed FISA-bill amnesty
opposed the bailout
opposes completely war in Iraq and Afghanistan:
Barack Obama!!!
Whoops.
The libertarian and green candidates suck as well, however they don't all suck equally.
Smarmily saying "they all suck" is intellectually bankrupt, leaving you only slightly better off than the anti-thought conservative crusaders.
some people will never understand compromise in politics. they may understand idealism but NOT realism.
Democrats: Strength- Incredible diversity both socioeconomically, ethnically, ideologically. Weakness-Can't agree on a damn thing!!
Republicans: Strength- Strong party loyalty and unity. Zealous base.
Weakness: Would vote for a freaking rooster if it was the party's nominee. (e.g. Palin)
Green: Strength- Consistently anti-corporate and environmentally aware.
Weakness- Too stoned most of the time to even get out and vote. DUDE, put down the bong!!
Libertarian: Strength- Comprised of very independent thinkers. Weakness- Firmly convinced of their intellectual and moral superiority to EVERYONE else. And most of those "independent thinkers" are flat out kooks.
All in all...I'll take my chances with the Dems this year Obama/Biden '08!!!!!
(breaking into my deep southern drawl)
A rooster would have been a better choice. There's one that always tends to either beat me or we tie at the county fair each year. He seemed smarter than Palin.
Palin kinda reminds me of that cousin that everyone wants to sleep with... but we really don't go to sleep if you know what I mean... (wink, wink, nudge, nudge)
And now... back to your regularly scheduled program.
This is the same low-life who claimed "Rats Make Good Pets, for Wounded Vets":

We're having a national election here in Canada tomorrow, and I'm more concerned with voters' ethical smarts or moral compass than their ability to identify judges from photos or tell me what the Charter of Rights (it's a 'charter' in Canada) is.
Knowing right from wrong, and having the correct priorities (e.g., helping the less fortunate is more important than a tax cut for the rich) -- those are more important matters.
I haven't been paying attention to Canada's election, my apologies, been kinda busy watchin the media circus around our own election process.
It's friggin insanity here.
Can't wait until Nov 5th!
Thanks, we'll need it.
I'm more interested in your American election too though, truth be told. I also agree with the original comment about voting for ethics over information.
If spouting out the most lies and disinformation could win elections, then an O'Reilly/Coulter ticket could run and win, hands down.
Here in America, we keep hearing how morally superior certain Christian types are ... but these are the people who do things like divorce their wives because they've been injured (McCain) or dying (Gingrich). They want to stand in judgment of our morals, or criticize our views on abortion, but have teenage daughters boffing the local redneck hockey boy. And then there's the whole drumming up fear and hate in hopes of spiking their opponent's popularity or campaign.
For my part, intelligence, assessing priorities - those ARE part of a well-developed moral compass. Not how loud you pray, or to whom.
in fairness to McCain and Gingrich, i dont think they divorced their wives because they were sick and dying. I believe it was because they weren't hot anymore.
I can understand that....
When you're dying of cancer that does put the kabosh on the hotness factor.
Polls suggest Bush "Light" is going to win. He isn't getting my vote. My riding is currently CONservative, and my area MP has been to my house. Rather than discuss my concerns, he stands and argues that his party is right. Just like Harper does.
There is actually a movement here in canada to LOWER the voting age to 16. should be interesting.
Have you seen the new Sarah Palin inflatable love doll? Crazy: http://brainrageblog.blogspot.com/2008/10/not...
for that one(heh) than the real thing.
...Dennis Hopper with one of these things in "River's Edge". It wouldn't have made it to the last third of the movie.
Take THAT Stossel...if that is indeed your real name!
Has their talking points written by the Manhattan Institute

I loved this! My son, who is 23 and a political science major, actually said to me a couple of months ago, "you guys should just sit this one out. You got us into this mess, now let us have a chance to clean it up." I am so happy to see that activist spirit and the passion and dedication of our younger generation (although I have no intention of "sitting it out"). I was his age during the Reagan revolution. The kids in my affluent high school wore yuppie clothes and aspired to be wealthy stockbrokers--that was the only contribution to human development they were interested in. For decades, we have pushed this "greed is good" meme despite mountains of historical evidence that it would not end well for us. I hope we can finally get past it.
Just wanted to point attention to it, mainly. Okay, since I have the microphone:
You raised your child well, Pongo. Don't feel any guilt at all. You shouldn't, imo
The fact that he still has such a great guru in his life is his gain :D
And maybe some 18 to 20 year old.... Maybe back from Iraq after three or four stop loss adventures should bitchslap the piss out of John Stossel.... Maybe it ought to be a female trooper.... I'm sure either gender could get the job done.... Hey Stossel, that ageist bullshit was kicked to the curb 40 some years ago wiseguy...where you been moron??? Why don't you take your weakass shit and say it to some kids face who just spent the best part of their teen years trying to stay alive while being forced under the UCMJ to prop up your boyfriends braindead foreign policy and 'nationbuilding' (read imperial resource mongering) you pussy!!! JD
I've never been a Stossel fan. He's extremely condescending. I remember something where he talked about the "liberal bias" in the media, his proof being that since he stopped doing consumer centered reports and focused on the good things big business does he's not won any awards.
Maybe it's more because he does nothing of value anymore.
Stossel got filed under 'idiot' back when he did his 'special report' on the differences between men and women, which included paying lip service to the 'women shouldn't be this, or women shouldn't be that, because they aren't physically capable' (firefighting, military).
I was sitting there yelling at the TV. "This is journalism? This is CRAP!"
You've just proved Stossel's point about liberal bias. Your comment "Maybe it's more because he does nothing of value anymore" shows that it's not the reporting skills that changed. It's that the "value" of his subject matter conflicts with the liberal agenda that permeates the main stream media. Even self admitted liberal media bastions (like the New York Times and the Washington comPost) agree that mainstream media is significantly biased toward liberals.
I know I'm posting on a liberal blog so there's going to be bias here; it's just that your comment proves the point.
I made a donation to MoveOn's voter roles support because of this butthead. Hopefully they will take my couple of sheckles and get some kids to vote.
We've been hearing about the infamous Bradley Effect which the RNC is hanging onto with a death grip these days. However, when you really spend some time thinking about what it says, your conclusion will be the opposite - The Reverse Bradley Effect.
A good portion of McCain's "rabid base" may, in fact, actually fall victim to the "Reverse Bradley Effect" themselves. These individuals are, by and large, either living in an Archie Bunker-mentality home (radical right) or maintain a white supremacist POV themselves. However, when even a rabid McCain-ite looks at where this country and economy are going and what it means to them personally to have another 4 years of Bush policies supported by John McCain, their actual "vote" may differ quite substantially. It only makes logical sense.
Many young people today have found themselves questioning the logic of their right wing parents - this is supported by statistics. In some cases, the rhetoric in their homes, communities, and red states is so radical that these young people also have no other way to "survive" this atmosphere but by "pretending to be of the same mindset" in order to not be ostracized and/or to keep peace and not be subject to violent reactions themselves.
These are precisely the people who will vote for Obama in the voting booth - their views have been suppressed by their white supremacist families, neighborhood and states.
So, essentially, what may, indeed, occur in November will be known as "THE REVERSE BRADLEY EFFECT" where people in strong GOP areas will vote Democratic this time around.
I fail to see how the supposed "Bradley Effect" even makes sense or any form of logic when you're speaking about the caucasian population. I think these spinmeisters of the Bradley Effect need to take it back to the drawing board because it doesn't even make sense......and defies normal logic.
Any pundit who affixes his/her name to the Bradley Effect to attempt to neutralize Obama's lead in the polls may not only find themselves to be sadly mistaken but end up looking like an idiot themselves. We've heard a few of these morons spouting off this past week about it hoping that people will not dissect this effect and what it actually means.
When it is dissected, the Bradley Effect makes absolutely no sense at all.
What may be the outcome in November is the REVERSE BRADLEY ACT which makes a hellova lot more sense than this crap that the pundits and TV idiots are spinning. Obviously, they haven't given what they're saying any thought.
notice who's putting their name on the Bradley Effect? Caucasian, rightwing pundits. They're hoping people won't notice their bigotry but it's showing - big time.
Not to be paranoid or anything. . .
But the Bradley effect could easily be used to explain a stolen election where a considerable lead in polls turns out to be a mysterious loss.
The funny thing is, that if right wing nuts like Stossel really did try to limit voting to only those who were educated and curious, it would make it very unlikely that the candidates they endorse could ever win.
Wasn't this guy slapped in the face by a pro-wrestler once ?
Yes he was and I keep that video in my favorites to watch on days when I get depressed.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SACE1tPEcbc
Thank You for making my day.
I would give ANYTHING to see that happen to Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, or Karl Rove ( now that he is a "political analyst", wink wink). PLEASE let that happen to any one of those douchebags...
I saw that video clip with the younger voters not knowing how many states we have, or how many senators there are. Hey....I think those simple questions would baffle any age group. They shouldn't...but they do.
Our nation is one of morons. We go about our business..."shopping" and digging ourselves into debt accumulating as many "toys" as we can get; and we haven't the slightest concern or interest in world affairs or how our country is run (into the ground).
We are a nation of f*cking morons. No civics in high school any longer. We are all too afraid of offending someone. American history is a joke. In elementary schools, NO legends, folklore, hell....when I grew up I knew all about Davy Crockett, Daniel Boone, the Alamo, Wild Bill Hickock, Annie Oakley, Paul Bunyen, etc, etc.
Kids today just don't get that exposure. They get Sponge Bob and the Ninja Turtles. A whole nation of morons. Weeeeeeeeee!!
Well, heck, if a young person should be disqualified from voting because they don't know how many states we have, or how many senators there are, what does it say about McCain and Palin, who have both made some pretty astounding claims?
As for what we're teaching our kids, you're right - and while some of it depends on what we provide our children, there seems to be a larger gold-to-crap ratio. We're more concerned about getting (or not getting) GTA IV for the kiddies' X-Box or Playstation, rather than engaging their intellectual curiousity and feeding it.
Pffft. These kids and their rock and/or roll music. Why don't they cut their hair?
I'm stoopit and I'm proud of it. My prayer partner tells me what to think, why can't that be good enough for these librul hippies?
I thought his specialties were covering the birth of baby zoo animals...or home town parades?
John Stossel is a fossil!
That was a fantastic commentary on the idiocy of John Stossel's special report nonsense. That guy is such a tool.
If Stossel, Geroge Will, etc. were truly interested in having only intelligent people vote, that might be an argument worth having.
The problem is they don't care how truly stupid people are as long as they vote for whoever their evangelical pastor tells them to,
Or if they get 'fired up' by someone (bush) who says he'll stop 'the gays' from marrying, etc.
How about all those fools who get taken in by some e-mail saying Obama is a secret muslim, and they're too dumb to google for an answer and just go on forwarding the e-mail and hanging on to that belief.
No, it's not dumb people they want to keep from voting, it's young people, because Obama is winning so much of the youth vote.
And I agree for the most part.
But George Will is an intellectual, and while he is definitely a conservative, he ( I think) wants what is best for this nation...though myself, and many who call themselves "liberals" disagree strongly with what that is exactly.
Stossel...he's just a washed up libertarian/conservative schmuck trying to remain valid.
Stossel's a pissant.
If these right wingnuts take a close look at their rabid base and the people at their rallies, it's abundantly clear that these people never even had an education and use only one criteria to formulate their opinions - what their reichwing extremist friends tell them.
John Stossel's always been a total tool which is why his career is in the tank and his reputation is in tatters.
I am so thankful this video was done. Watched the Stossel bit and was just appalled, and wrote an email telling 20/20 I would never watch the program again. I am old and just could not believe that idiot would try something so absurd ... but such are the right wingers I guess.
REPORTER: "Who is this"
MAN: "MOS DEEEFFF!!!"
Looks like North Dakota is back in play.....and definitely leaning Obama now.
http://www.in-forum.com/articles/index.cfm?id...
Friday night we went to our usual restaurant for dinner. The waitresses there are young and they know I am a strong Obama supporter. They all gathered around our table to tell me they had organized their shifts for election day so that when each of them is off, they are volunteering to drive people to the polls to vote. They will each be working the night shift to keep Nov. 4th free. They are all signed up and everything. They said their friends are as excited about this as they are and they are talking to other people their age every day.
I don't know about other towns, but the young people here really are fired up and ready to go.
pop - hopefully they're in a more red part of FL, where they can do some good. (Let's get the Diaz-Balarts and Ros-Lehtinen out of there!)
Pissed off Patricia,
The youth vote is scaring the living hell out of the GOP. If they show up like they did in '06, Obama should easily win. Also, love your name...After the last 8 years, indignant rage is a good thing!!
I hope you tipped them well and praised them liberally.
Looks like their wingnut shenanigans and total bull$hit of the past week hasn't put a dent in the Obama numbers! He's now officially UP BY 10 nationwide.
Check it out:

Well done!
More bad news for McCain/Palin this week.
http://rawstory.com/news/2008/Blumenthal_brea...
This is priceless. Just as McCain went down in flames decrying "the fundamentals of the economy are sound" while the market crashed, today he's claiming that they "have us right where they want us". I guess he also realizes that people are fleeing him in droves according to this article and poll then??
So, are we to logically presume that McCain wants voters to flee from him in droves? I presume so.
I think it's called self-sabbotage.

Someone who runs away after getting b*tch-slapped twice and then sues for psychological damage shouldn't be allowed to vote, right John Stossel?
The ACLU's lawsuit screams violation of constitutional law against the Bush Administration. This will also affect the McCain campaign since he's their "annointed one".
http://rawstory.com/news/2008/NSA_revelations...
Please tell me you're NOT talking about a part of his anatomy......
Exactly why I despise the cravenly cowardly Dem congresscritters like Rockefeller. Having been briefed on the program (or in Rockefeller's case, conducting "oversight"), their entire job was simply making sure abuses and illegality did not occur, and yet not only do they fail to do their jobs, but they bless the programs to the rest of Congress. And then later cry that they never knew the abuses could happen, and nobody could have known (translation: everyone knew but them).
The sooner John Rockefeller, Jane Harman and Nancy Pelosi are gone, the better.
Disturbing how people who didn't know who Mos Def was automatically labeled him a "street person." Because he's black and is wearing a baseball cap?? This bothers me.
Why does he still have that '70's porn star mustache?

The Frito Bandito was a porn star?????????
What is it with Stossel and his pornstache??!!
Today's Missouri numbers do not bode well for McCain! The latest gallup and WaPo results now have Obama with a firm 10 point lead.....
now Missouri moves thttp://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com/polltracker/mopres/oward the Obama column, too....

Anything mocking John stossel gives me an orgasm. He makes Bill O'Reilly look like a genius.
to the continual humiliation of John Stossel
this happens a lot under the new regime: there's a new threadd, but the comments do not appear for some time afterwards...whassup, mah frenz???

The hamster who runs in the comments wheel dozes off about this time of day. Someone has to go in and wake the little rascal up to get him moving again.

I am 59 years old and have watched the last three debates with my friends and their sons, who are in their early to mid twenties and they are both incredibly astute when it comes to politics and their constitutional rights and their right to vote...... as opposed to John Stossel who is incredibly asstoot.
"asstoot"
i like that...
How many of them are going to pick a Libertarian, or a Constitutionalist?
No. They only get one pick: Democan or Republicrat.
Pick second party this year.
And stop worrying about kids losing their right to vote. Since they're only given one of two choices, realistically, their vote doesn't really count anyway.
Great piece.
Now Sarah gives hate speeches and incites people to yell hate, kill and terrorist in hopes of getting a vote. Now the loyal paid Republican Journalist will fall on the sword to cover up for the idiot McCain/Palin.
What kind of a sick, stupid fuck still thinks that voting actually does anything? Only morons vote.
nice piece,
Mon, 10/13/2008 - 11:54 — Duncan Watson (not verified)
Great piece.
Who, sarah?
)O(
that its the informed people who should be voting, according to John Stossel. He doesnt seem to have a problem with informed young people voting. He just seems to have a problem with uninformed young people voting.
He could make a similar point about older point. But you idiots saved him the trouble by making a youtube video!
Why do you guys always have to get down to the cliched "rich white people," "they are racist" and "they owned slaves and imposed poll taxes on the poor," arguments.
Before you go for my a** please remember I am not a McCain-Palin supporter. I am just an informed citizen.
An 'informed citizen' calling 'us guys' morons. Hmmmmm.
The problem here is stossel would consider anyone as uninformed if they dare to disagree with him.
Shouldn't that be summit?
Reach for the heights!!!
)O(
At the end of the day, the most nonsensical and incorrect things I hear about either candidate come from older people. Just look at the McCain rallies. The youth vote is not the problem.
I simply think Stossel (and others are scared) because it looks like the youth vote will be larger and thus make a bigger difference than any time in recent history... And given that many younger people seem to not be going McCain's way, that is a problem. Might as well denounce it.
ABC News F*cks the Vote!
ABC News decided to tackle some important issues on 20/20 Friday night. Like whether or not stupid people should vote. And the premiere of the new Britney Spears video.
Plus, their 'experts' are incredible.
