RNC Launches Obama/Ayers Ad: "Guilt by Association"

It never stops...just when you think they can't get any lower, they dredge a little more slime out of the pond. Politico:

The Republican Party on Monday morning will make a new push to convince voters that distant ties between Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) and former radical William Ayers are somehow disqualifying for the presidency.

The Republican National Committee plans to e-mail “an audience of tens of millions” the link to a new video on the subject called “Guilt by Participation” and encourage recipients to forward it to friends and family, aides said.[..]

The 80-second video ends with a new slogan, a variation of one Republicans have used in the past: “Barack Obama: Career First. Country Second.” The slogan is likely to be used again, officials say.

The video flashes garish lettering like “WANTED BY FBI” and “DON’T REGRET SETTING BOMBS.”

The Obama campaign on Sunday released a roundup of media quotes headed “McCain's Strategy of Distracting From the Economy ... How's It Playing With Republicans?”: “In case you missed them, below are stories across the country voters are reading and hearing about McCain’s closing strategy, even conservative pundits, Republican officials and Republican voters are rejecting it."

Among those quoted was Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol, who said on “Fox News Sunday”: “[T]he main thing to say about these negative ads, which, I don’t think — almost none of them has been across the line — they haven't worked. Obama's favorable rating is as high as it's been in three months. It's actually gone up in the last month. So it's a stupid campaign.”

Hear that, guys? It's not working...McCain's numbers are sliding further and further down. So then it has to be asked: WHY would the RNC be launching an ad campaign not helpful--indeed, detrimental--to their candidate? If they're not interested in saving McCain's campaign, are they laying the foundation for four years of smears and distraction to an Obama presidency?

Politfact gives McCain (and now, the RNC) the official "Pants On Fire" seal for his attempt to tie Obama to Ayers.

That's far from the only slime coming out of the pond!

the DNC should respond by associating McCain with Strom Thurmond, who was a member of the KKK... then pan to McCain refusing to talk to Obama or even look at him at the first debate, and refusing to shake his hand at the 2nd... and accuse McCain of racism.

John McCain, who supports his campaign by accepting donations from, and appearing on the radio show of, G. Gordon Liddy, one of America's most prominent domestic terrorists. Mr. Liddy, a convicted felon who served four years for crimes against the state during the Watergate scandal, has admitted being prepared to kill during the break-in, plotting to assassinate journalist Jack Anderson, and plotting to kidnap (and if necessary kill) 'leftist guerillas' at the 1972 republican convention in Miami. More recently Mr. Liddy has counselled listers on his radio show to murder ATF agents ("shoot the bastards") and advised them how to do it ("head shots, people. They'll be wearing vests").

Far from denouncing Mr. Liddy, senator McCain refers to him as "my good friend," says he is "proud of him," and asserts that Mr. Liddy "represents the values that make this country great."

But of course he's a republican, so all that's okay.

Paul Krugman has won the Nobel Prize for Economics.

Anais's picture

It's a well-deserved honor for Professor Krugman, and a real kick in the eye for conservatives, who have now been shown twice in recent years how out of step they are with the rest of the world, which respects the work of American liberals and thinkers like Krugman and Al Gore.
As for guilt by association, the Obama campaign needs only to link McCain with the Keating 5 (many voters DO remember this debacle) and Palin with those right-wing Alaskan extremists and witch-hating terrorist pastor. Voters recognize Obama was not Ayers's friend "till death do us part," as Keating wrote to McCain, but a casual acquaintance who had one fundraising event for Obama and otherwise served with Ayers on a committee formed by Reagan buddy Annenberg. And I thought Palin was a Christian. Doesn't she believe in redemption for Ayers, who is a university professor named Chicago Citizen of the Year in the 1990s'? You betcha not!

Anonymous's picture

Exactly!

It is so interesting how people who are guilty of sins and crimes usually try to project them on to their opponents. In this case it is perfectly legitimate to remind people of Palin's ACTUAL links to extremist groups and McCains PARTICIPATION in the Keating Five Savings & Loan scandal. Indeed, the Keating 5 scandal was a precursor to the mess we are in today. It is our responsibility to remind the citizenry of this!!

Scar was losing his mind over Krugman getting the Nobel Prize. Kramer was his guest, and was equally insane. Andrea Mitchell was the lone voice of sanity, refusing to guffaw and laugh it up with the two, noting with a very flat affect that well ya know, he does have a PHD in economics, and happens to be a Professor at Princeton University.
Joe, you just stink.

ThunderMonkey's picture

It's because Krugman doesn't yell over people or try to belittle them.

Scar has Kramer. Olberman and Maddow have Krugman.

That says a lot.

(Although, while I think Kramer is a bit of a dolt, I loved his bit in the "Iron Man" movie... that was priceless, but that's about the only good thing I can say.)

Rusty Shackleford's picture

McCain's slimeball tactic of claiming that Obama is a terrorist is backfiring because it doesn't square with the Obama that millions of people saw on TV during the debates: an intelligent, compassionate man with an even temperament and strong character.

I figure these ads - in fact, the whole racist, fear-mongering approach that McCain has taken the last couple of weeks - is just an effort to ensure that the hate-filled Republican base turns out on Nov. 4, and a way to con some last-minute contributions to pay his massive campaign debt.

The Truthiness Hurts's picture

Do these people really think Obama is going to strap on a bomb vest and run into Congress shouting "Praise to Allah"? Or Crash Air Force One into the Pentagon?

There are far easier ways to hurt America than to spend a decade or more of your life clawing your way up the ladder (with the odds stacked against you) to the presidency.

Its another clear case of Projection from the party of fear. "He's going to abuse his position of power to get americans killed, destroy the economy and further his own goals!"

Remind me, what did your guy Bush do again?

Logic took a permanent vacation in Wingnutland...

indeed. i'm just glad that more and more people are able to actually watch obama, see him for themselves, and make their own judgment.

i think that for those who are willing to take a reasonable look at this man, they'll see that he is indeed intelligent (which is important given the complex issues simultaneously affecting your country, the united states, and the world), of even temperament, and someone who speaks to the concerns of a majority of americans.

the terrorist insinuation is crude, and appeals to the ugly side of human nature. it's actually rather sad to see it being used so aggressively, especially when your country is facing some truly serious problems.

Two questions:

1. Why are these ads even being aired and not investigated by the FCC or elections commission?

2. Why are their makers not being arrested for slander and defamation of character by the justice department?

Answer to both: Because both are stacked with political appointees who are only interested in obeying the party line. Career first, country second.

anonymous's picture

The more they slime, they become the slime. People can see straight through their disgusting tactics - that's why there's a 10 point lead in almost every poll.

Let them "slime away" - the only ones they're besmerching in the long run are McCain and Palin.

Slime away and further convince americans that the McCain campaign is nothing but a bunch of filthy losers.

anonymous's picture

All Obama and Biden need to is permit the RNC slime machine to slit it's own throat the the throats of their candidates. This ad will cinch it for any Independent sitting on the fence who will make or break this election.

The RNC has two candidates who have been "cited" for abuse of power - the first time ever in the history of this country.

The RNC has two candidates who have been shown to be unqualified and impotent by THEIR OWN ACTIONS.

The RNC has two candidates who have nothing positive to present to the american people because one is tied to Bush at the hip and the other is "Bush in drag".

So what else can they do? Slime and hope it works. It isn't and it won't - which they will soon discover.

Those 10 point leads in the polls will be 15 point leads following the Slime Machine of the RNC this week as well as the debate.

Obama will deal the TKO to McCain on Wednesday and all that will be left is the 'cryin' and the mopping of right wing extremists' tears.

Well, the FCC is not getting involved because there was not one exposed breast in any of these ads!

Palin and The Case of the Missing Emails!

Jeffrey Davis's picture

courtesy of Lewis Carroll and the great political philosopher, Humpty Dumpty:

`I sent to them again to say
"It will be better to obey."
The fishes answered, with a grin,
"Why, what a temper you are in!"
I told them once, I told them twice:
They would not listen to advice.
I took a kettle large and new,
Fit for the deed I had to do.
My heart went hop, my heart went thump:
I filled the kettle at the pump.
Then some one came to me and said
"The little fishes are in bed."
I said to him, I said it plain,
"Then you must wake them up again."
I said it very loud and clear:
I went and shouted in his ear.'

I'll give the McCain campaign credit for one very important thing, the ability to stand in front of the camera and declare an end to negative attacks while on all of the major news channels disgusting attack ads run on an endless loop. They need only pay for one airing since the "liberal haha" media will continue to run the ads til they are imbedded in the american psyche.

It never stops...just when you think they can't get any lower...

Oh, this is going to get much worse. The next three weeks are going to be filled with reprehensible Republican muck.

Carl Rove, you should be tarred and feathered in a public square for your lies, deceits and manipulations. All the redneck voters who honestly think that Obama's a terrorist arab all need some prozac and some deprogramming. Our country's on the verge of another Civil War and Carl Rove and the RNC are directly responsible for it! Sheeshe!

anonymous's picture

Bill Ayers is a respectable college professor which, incidentally, is more than John McCain (graduating 5th from the bottom of his class) can ever hope to achieve. The fact that this is "all they have" at this point is so pathetic that it's become pretty laughable.

When I see each attack ad about Ayers, I see another confirmation of the fact that the Republican brand is tainted and corrupt, lacking integrity and dishonorable - all of the things which once made McCain attractive to americans - his level of integrity and honor. This has all been stolen from him now as his reputation (even his war hero status) is being calling into question.

Each ad adds another nail in the coffin of the McCain campaign.

Does this man have any positive insight? Does this man represent hope for the future? Evidently, not with the tone and tenor of their ads.

Their ads are 100% negative and have presented nothing of the strengths or qualities which would make an american vote for this man.

Their ads are continuing to clinch american votes for Obama. We know nothing of John McCain and what he's accomplished at this point in time - some 3 weeks from the election. So I presume that their message of focus on the other candidate clearly means that they have nothing they can present about this man which is positive, altruistic or meaningful??

Each ad makes this fact clearer and clearer to more americans. McCain is an empty shell with nothing left to his character.

Anonymous's picture

I especially like this part from the politifact review:

"Had Kurtz chosen to accuse Obama of carrying water for the conservative Annenberg, he might have written: "CAC disbursed money to various business-friendly entities, such as the Museum of Science and Industry and the Commercial Club of Chicago."

See how easy it is?"

There are millions of folks (my age and a little younger, within 5-7 years, say, down to 55-57) who are STILL pissed that the sexual revolution missed them back then. Bill Ayers was one of the leaders of the student revolt of the time. Got more ass than a toilet-seat, back in the day. They still envy him.

That's the whole explanation...

Forget Ayers, Wasn’t that McCAIN Embracing a Commie Radical?

anonymous's picture

The clear message which americans are inferring from their continued attack ads is that they feel that their candidate has already lost and now all they can do is to try to tear down his opponent?

That's the message every american I've spoken to has received.

This is all the RNC knows how to do. They've become (as we so well know) a gang of criminal thugs who have no nadir or "low" they will stoop to. This group of "has beens" are struggling for survival and in November the people will not only reject these two frauds but they will forever put an end to the disgusting tactics of the RNC in the process as well.

Joe O.'s picture

In that story they say that independents are evenly split between Obama and McCain with Obama having a slight edge. They say McCain has to target white, independent voters to gain that back because Democrats are coming out in much larger numbers. I'm a white independent voter and I am solidly in Obama's camp and so is another white independent voter that I know. McCain's attack ads won't work on us. In fact, his ads could just as easily apply to him. Especially since he pals around with right wing death squads.

Captain Kangaroo's picture

At this time in the campaign the Palin/McCain ticket should trying to appeal to the independent voters. To the people who are still undecided. It is known that independent voters do not like name calling and attack campaigning. They want to be informed about what the candidate is going to do. Independent voters are thinking people who analyze the campaign on the issues. They watch the news. They want the truth. Because they are informed they know what the truth is. They have been following the campaign for months and months and months. The independents and undecideds that McCain is trying to convince see what Palin and McSHAME are doing and what they are saying. Palin/McCain are not appealing to the independents. This is another reason they are going to lose. And lose BIG.

In particular, Bill Ayers, who himself acknowledges being a member of the weathermen and also ties with Mr. Obama. Bill Ayers is currently a professor at the Univ. of Illinois in Chicago. I have an MBA from that university, and it truly irritates me that a public university, none-the-less one that I attended, would allow such a man to saturate the minds of young men and women. Honorable men ?
If you recall the congressional testimony during Oliver North Iran Contra hearings, one thing that conspicuously stood out was so many Republican "character witnesses" incessantly referring to North as an "honorable man." Yesterday it was widely reported that John McCain stood up for Barrack Obama in like manner when some woman at one of his rallies assailed Obama as an "Arab." McCain, pulling the microphone from her hands, declaimed that Obama was an honorable man, or some words to that effect. Well now, it seems that the old saw "it takes one to know one" perfectly applies in this case. McCain, after all, dumped his ailing crippled wife for a young beer heiress and then went on to choose a ex-beauty pageant Governor as his running mate. Why wouldn't such a man admire how Obama parlayed his many years long connections with the Ayers family into a successful run for the Democratic Party Presidential nomination, all the while keeping it at arms length. What was it that Roosevelt said about Joe Kennedy?

While I detest negative campaigns, the data shows that they do indeed work. That's the sad reality. I'm sorry to say that but it's true.

It's a good tactic on McCains part because he doesn't "control" the Republican party, nor does he control 527 like Freedom's Defense or any other organization outside of his campaign. That being said, The GOP and it's 527 affiliates can sling mud and McCain can say "I'm now running a clean campaign. I cannot control these groups. They are outside of my domain of influence."

See, it's a win-win for McSame. He can abdicate his campaign from the negativity while the dirty work continues. I wouldn't be surprised if Al Franken sees this same thing in has race. Norm Coleman quite the mud slinging but the GOP might not.

Also, we might see the tactic as McCain driven, that doesn't mean the fence sitters (How the hell can you be an undecided this year???? it boggles the mind) see proxy attacks as detrimental to McCain.

On Sunday's Chris Matthews show David Ignatius said that McCain could "lose his soul" if his campaign continued down the path that they were on. This comment silenced the panel and Chris Matthews.

Seems like McCain is more than willing to "lose his soul" or all ready has

"Mr. IGNATIUS: I think if McCain uses these very nasty character references,
he risks losing his soul. This is what he said he wouldn't do in this
campaign.

MATTHEWS: Wow. Thanks to a great roundtable: Gloria Borger, Howard Fineman,

I was under the impression that the only deaths linked to WU were 3 of their own members..

"We were very careful from the moment of the townhouse on to be sure we weren't going to hurt anybody, and we never did hurt anybody. Whenever we put a bomb in a public space, we had figured out all kinds of ways to put checks and balances on the thing and also to get people away from it, and we were remarkably successful."

I was hoping they would do this. It is definitely good for another 2-3 points in the polls. Now if we can just get them to pull the trigger on the Wright stuff we can get this election over with. With the response to Ayers by the voting public, Wright has to be worth at least 5 points positive in the polls for Obama.

Nobody wants to hear about this. The media, who has to push any of these stories for them to stick isn't interested in last Spring's news. Notice although all last week people were talking about Wright as a possible next move by McCain, they were never accompanied by any of the video of Wright (A natural thing for the producers to put on as background for the conversation). They just are not interested in it.

I disagree. The RNC is now doing the dirty work so McSame has plausible deniability. The McCain camp isn't saying that bad things---other people are.

This lends tactic lends itself to to McCain by allowing him to use very broad pronouns such as "some" and "many".

An Example:

McCain to group of followers: "Some people have linked Obama to Bill Ayres..."

McCain doesn't have to use the term terrorist because the RNC is and that frees McCain/Palin to simply use Ayres name. It looks less dirty on McCains part but the message is still out there. Bush never had to question Kerry's service. The swiftboaters did that for him. Bush only had to mention things about the incidents to raise the issues the swift boaters made up.

This is Rove's tactic. Bush didn't do a lot of the dirty work in his campaigns, others did. Bush only had to make a quick --- non-negative or non-threatening comment about the connection to get people to draw the conclusion their selves.

This is how we got the Hussein == Osama meme. Bush never said that. He implied it. Proxies said Hussein = Osama and the country bout the crap hook line and sinker.

Creetch's picture

I don't think that anyone separates the statements of the RNC and those of McCain at this point in time.

Your points are all valid, but I do not think it negates the blow-back we have seen on McCain's negativity. I really truly believe at this time that Ayres and Wright will help Obama at this time if the RNC/McCain camp keep trotting them out.

The only way they may help is if they motivate more dispirited Republicans to come to the pools. They are poison to the Independents.

"The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Monday shows Barack Obama attracting 50% of the vote while John McCain earns 45%. That’s a bit closer than numbers from a week ago when Obama enjoyed an eight-point advantage, his largest lead of the year."

There could be a hundred reasons why Obama lost 3 points in a week; however, there might be only one reason --- dirty politics.

Mud slinging works. There are few cases when/where it doesn't work. This pisses me off because it shows how uninformed the US voting public is...

If McCain can separate himself from the mud then he looks better, yet the slime-ball RNC can do what they want and still bring Obama's numbers down.

William Ayers: Funded by Republicans

The Annenbergs-- Republicans. Bankrolled William Ayers with $50 million

But Walter and Leonore weren't just giving money to educational foundations started by William Ayers. They were also giving hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Republican National Committee and various other Republican groups, as well as to a whole host of Republican candidates, including the following:

George W. Bush $4000
Mitt Romney $5000
Strom Thurmond $1000
Fred Thompson $500
Rick Santorum $3000
Rick Santorum-- former Republican Senator. Received $3000 from Ayers' backers.

Why would billionaire Republican philanthropists give millions of dollars to a program that was working with William Ayers? Why would George W., Mitt Romney, Fred Thompson and all those other Republicans accept money from the people who were funding this William Ayers-associated group? Why won't McCain discuss these connections between the Republican Party and Ayers?

Here's the icing on the cake: just yesterday, the McCain campaign put out a press release bragging about the fact that Leonore Annenberg has endorsed him for president. Yes, you heard it-- a McCain backer bankrolled William Ayers with millions of dollars.

McCain and Enron

Throughout his career, McCain has been an enthusiastic champion of financial industry deregulation as a member of the Senate Commerce Committee from 1997-2001 and 2003-2005. McCain voted, according to a Washington Post financial columnist, with his “campaign’s general co-chairman and domestic policy adviser, former Texas senator Phil Gramm. The Politico’s Lisa Lerer reports that not only did Gramm author the 1999 legislation that repealed Glass-Steagall, the New Deal law restricting the speculative activities of banks, but after Gramm left the Senate, he lobbied Congress on behalf of the Swiss bank UBS when the banking lobby wanted Congress to overturn state laws restricting predatory lending and the issuance of mortgages to prospective home owners who could not afford them.” http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/conte… McCain, like Gramm, has been a supporter of the “Enron Loophole” that allowed Amaranth Advisors hedge fund, a commodities futures trading company, to attempt in 2006 to corner the natural gas market, a criminal violation for which the fund was recently handed a $300 million fine. http://www.consortiumnews.com/2008/051908a…

McCain also has a direct connection with Enron, having received money in campaign contributions from Ken Lay’s Death Star. “We’re all tainted by the millions and millions of dollars that were contributed by Enron executives,” John McCain told CBS’ “Face the Nation” Sunday. McCain then acknowledged receiving $9,500 from Enron in two campaigns. http://www.time.com/time/business/article/… Gramm’s wife, Wendy, was on the Enron Board of Directors, and Gramm was the architect of much of the “reform” while he chaired the Senate Banking Committee, including a move to exempt electronic trading of electricity from regulatory oversight. According to Time Magazine, Gramm and his wife were at the forefront of many of the illicit practices that led to the firm’s massive ripoffs and ultimate collapse:

On Jan. 14, 1993, in the final days of the first Bush administration, Wendy Gramm – as chairwoman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission – pushed through a key regulatory exemption removing energy derivatives contracts and interest-rate swaps from federal oversight.

That was a major financial boon to Enron, where Wendy Gramm landed five weeks later as a member of the board of directors. She also became a member of the audit committee that signed off on another one of Enron’s fraudulent schemes, partnerships that hid the company’s growing debt.

McCain claims that his role in Keating was merely to help out a local constituent in dealing with Washington bank regulators. McCain, his current wife, and father-in-law were, in fact, Charles Keating’s business partners in a Phoenix shopping mall, received in excess of one hundred thousand dollars in campaign contributions from Keating, and accompanied Keating on his private jet to his private resort in the Bahamas on multiple occasions, gifts which McCain did not report until they were discovered. Yet, McCain, hand-picked as Barry Goldwater’s successor, got a slap on the wrist from the Senate Ethics Committee when this came out in the Keating-Five inquiry.

A second Senate panel wasn’t so sanguine. The 1992 Kerry Commission report concluded that the Keating affair was far more serious than a mere domestic banking scandal: “the financial dealings of BCCI directors with Charles Keating and several Keating affiliates and front-companies, includ(e) the possibility that BCCI related entities may have laundered funds for Keating to move them outside the United States.” http://www.fas.org/irp/congress/1992_rpt/b… Out of the five Senators accused, only McCain and Glenn ever ran again for office, with McCain the sole survivor.
