You Can't Stop The Beat - Hairspray (2007)

My little one and I watched Hairspray this week and I was surprised when she asked me why the entire plot of integrating the Corny Collins dance show was such a big deal. She simply couldn't wrap her head around segregation. And then it occurred to me that the lyrics to this song were true. You can't stop progress. You can slow it down, sure. You can fight it tooth and nail. But ultimately, you can't stop that beat. Progress will happen. And just like my baby girl looking at me quizzically when I tried to explain about Jim Crow, some day, my grandchild will look at me with the same odd look as I try to explain the resistance to gay marriage, women's reproductive rights, climate change, etc. The drum beat towards progress is just too hard to withstand.
