Sunday Morning Bobblehead Thread

I don't think Thom spent nearly enough time on this, but it was perhaps the most provocative thing said at the World Economic Forum. South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu told the audience that's time for men to step aside and let women be in charge:

When we exclude women, we diminish ourselves

This shouldn’t be such a difficult topic for people of faith. It seems entirely consistent with the teachings of the world’s great religions that men and women are equal in the eyes of God. God isn’t stupid – He created Eve because Adam couldn’t make it on his own. Kofi Annan, receiving a report from the UN Alliance of Civilizations, said it is the faithful who are the problem - not the faiths.

Nevertheless, faith and gender remains a sensitive subject. My colleagues indulged me and allowed me to reflect on the apartheid era when the majority of South Africans were excluded and marginalised for something they could do nothing about: their ethnicity.

It seems to me that women are also sidelined for something they can do nothing about, their gender and humanity is the poorer for it. In my own church, which decided only in 1992 that women could be ordained as priests and bishops, it was quite a shock to realise how much we had diminished ourselves in our ministry when we saw the difference women made.

In this volatile time, when there is so much distress and dissatisfaction, we are wasting a huge source of talent and wisdom by not including women as equals in all aspects of life – whether in politics, business or religion.

Not surprisingly, this didn't go over well in the male-dominated WEF. But I think Tutu has a point. Look at this line up...it's not only pasty white, but overwhelmingly male, both hosts and guests. We women are 51 percent of the population and yet are only 17 percent of either house of Congress. Studies have shown that the more a society works towards gender equity, the higher the aggregate education of the entire population, the lower the birth rates, the lower the child mortality, the lower the incidences of domestic abuse and other forms of violent crime. All in all, by all measures, society improves when women have more of a voice in shaping their future. So maybe it is for us to work towards a more equitable society. By the way, if you want to hear more of my thoughts on this, Jacob Dean, producer of Thom Hartmann, has an internet radio show on Nicole Sandler's network every Monday evening and we talked about a women's revolution last week. Tell me if you don't agree that we need to put more gender balance in our society.

Up with Chris Hayes, January 28, 2012, h/t Heather at VideoCafe

Actually, there's one scheduled guest on the list that won't actually be showing up: Rick Santorum. It was announced late last night that Santorum's three year old daughter, Bella, who was diagnosed with Trisomy 18 and not expected to live a year, has been admitted into the hospital. There's nothing snarky about this: I hope that Bella Santorum gets better soon. I can say this because I'm an empathetic person and know there is little more painful than seeing your child ill and being unable to do anything. But there's a serious lack of empathy in today's political discussions, and frankly, I blame Republicans. The glorification of the wealthy, the veneration of selfishness, the disdain of societal responsibilities, it all sounds like an Ayn Rand heaven, but it makes for a damn poor country. I'll be participating on panel with my friend Nicole Sandler and others on Jacob Dean's "Filter Free Radio" this Monday at 7pm Eastern, and we'll be discussing women and politics. I feel like we could be in much better shape as a country if we could focus on empathy and other feminine qualities. But until then, we get to suffer the rich, pasty white men of the Republican Party, since that's basically all that ever gets booked on Sundays.

Pink Martini -- Never on Sunday

This song comes from the Greek movie of the same name, made in 1960, and for some reason, was playing through my head last night watching the speeches of the Republican candidates. If you've never heard of the movie, Melina Mercouri played Ilya, a prostitute who is happy with her life and very independent-minded (itself a radical notion in 1960). An American classical scholar named Homer comes to Greece to see why this great empire had fallen from its former glory and projects upon the prostitute that she is the symbol of all that is no longer great about Greece and decides to "save" her. Ironically, all the money and books that Homer gives Ilya comes from an organized crime figure who worries that her independence gives all the other prostitutes ideas and wants to see her living a quiet, retired life.

It's an imperfect analogy, but I couldn't help but ask myself as I looked at the circus of primary, who exactly is Homer and who is Ilya? How do South Carolinians, who pride themselves on being the most extreme social conservatives, evangelical Christian, family values voter end up voting overwhelmingly for a thrice-married, philandering newly converted Catholic with a history of corruption charges and a revolving account at Tiffany's that is larger than most people's salaries? How in the hell did that kind of resume become the go-to candidate? The central crux of the movie is to see whose spirit will prove to be stronger, Homer's or Ilya's. I don't know if this country's spirit can take much more of this 'saving' by Republicans.

Sunday Morning Bobblehead Thread

I have always found Stephen Colbert hilarious and smart. But I want to squee like the biggest fangirl at his latest brilliance to show just how ridiculously broken our election system is with his Super PAC and now his presidential bid. Everything he's doing is completely legal and legitimate and it perfectly exemplifies how we need to fix this crazy democratic process. He's going to take his first foray into the Sunday shows this weekend too. Call me a pessimist but I don't think George Stephanopoulos is anywhere near ready to handle him. On the flip side, I don't think that Rick Perry is anywhere near ready to handle George Stephanopoulos. Elsewhere, it's the same old, same old. Gingrich and Santorum both have a pair of appearances. John McCain makes yet another Sunday appearance, but Candy Crowley will also be focusing on the evangelical vote with Bob Jones III and Rev. Brad Atkins. For my money, the most interesting talk will be on Fareed Zakaria, with Krugman and Peter Galbraith bucking the conservative framing.

ABC's "This Week" - GOP presidential candidate Rick Perry; TV host Stephen Colbert. Roundtable: Jonathan Karl, Peggy Noonan, Cokie Roberts, George Will.

NBC's "Meet the Press" - GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich; Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.; Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and Rep. Tim Scott, R-S.C.

CNN's "State of the Union" - Perry; Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.; David Axelrod, political adviser to President Barack Obama's re-election campaign. The evangelical vote in South Carolina: Rev. Brad Atkins, South Carolina Baptist Convention; Bob Jones III, Bob Jones University.

Heartbreak Warfare - John Mayer

Another Sunday, another appearance by John McCain. On the good news side, we'll soon have another intelligent talk show coming to follow Up with Chris Hayes, as MSNBC contributer and frequent guest host Melissa Harris-Perry is going to be adding her voice to the lineup.

If you haven't had enough debates, NBC is looking to hook you up. David Gregory is pre-empting his own show to moderate an annoyingly timed debate in New Hampshire. It should be a mixed bag of discussions elsewhere, from Nancy Pelosi assuring Candy Crowley that Obama asserted no improper power by recess-appointing Richard Cordray to Leon Panetta assuring Bob Schieffer that the Defense Department will manage just fine even with cuts to Ron Paul still trying to insist that his Randian ideology will work in the real world.

NBC's Meet the Press - Republican presidential debate: Former Rep. Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.); former Gov. Jon Huntsman (R-Utah); Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas); Gov. Rick Perry (R-Texas); former Gov. Mitt Romney (R-Mass.); former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.). Moderator: David Gregory.

CNN's State of the Union With Candy Crowley - New Hampshire primary; campaign strategy: presidential candidate former Gov. Jon Huntsman (R-Utah). 2012 legislative agenda; the race for the White House: Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco). Romney versus Gingrich in New Hampshire: Romney surrogate former Gov. John H. Sununu (R-N.H.); Gingrich surrogate former Rep. Bob Walker (R-Pa.). New Hampshire primary: Phil Rucker; Neil King.

CNN's Fareed Zakaria GPS - Politics: Former Sen. Alan K. Simpson (R-Wyo.). Military budget: Michael O'Hanlon; Lawrence Korb. U.S. and Iran: Hillary Mann Leverett; Hooman Majd; Vali Nasr; Bret Stephens, the Wall Street Journal.

CNN's Reliable Sources - Iowa caucus: Jonathan Karl, ABC; Lynn Sweet; Roger Simon, Politico. Fair game reporting: Robert Costa; Dana Milbank. New Hampshire primary: James Pindell, WMUR.

ABC's This Week With George Stephanopoulos - Obama campaign adviser David Axelrod. Former Gov. Mike Huckabee (R-Ark.). Panel: George Will; Donna Brazile; Mary Matalin; Matthew Dowd; Jake Tapper.

Fox News Sunday With Chris Wallace - Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz (D-Fla.); Republican National Committee chair Reince Priebus; Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas).

Jay Sean - 2012 (It Ain't The End) ft. Nicki Minaj

Happy New Year! If you're of a mind to listen to the Mayans via Hollywood, welcome to the final year before the world ends. Truthfully, I'm a little less concerned about the coming apocalypse as I am the spectacle of the upcoming Iowa caucus. Maybe because we have two GOP caucus/primaries within a week, the Sunday show bookers thought that it was unnecessary to have any Democrats scheduled this week--not even the bluest of Blue Dogs. Once again, it's GOPtv and we're all just living it.

ABC's "This Week" - 2012 GOP presidential candidates Michele Bachmann and Ron Paul; Gov. Terry Branstad, R-Iowa.

NBC's "Meet the Press" - 2012 GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum; Matt Strawn, Iowa GOP chairman.

NBC's "The Chris Matthews Show" - Panel: Kathleen Parker, Rick Stengel, Chuck Todd and Katty Kay. Topics: It's the 2011 Awards Show! What were the best and worst moments of 2011?

CBS' "Face the Nation" - Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky.

CNN's "State of the Union" - Ron Paul; Branstad; Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa.

CNN's "Fareed Zakaria GPS" - Anne-Marie Slaughter, Ian Bremmer, Daniel Franklin on 2012 predictions. Harvard theoretical physicist Lisa Randall talks about the God Particle and more. Nobel Prize-winning economist Daniel Kahneman.

"Fox News Sunday" - 2012 GOP presidential candidates Rick Perry, Ron Paul and Bachmann.

I'm going to continue to schedule blocks of our top video countdown, but we'll try to get a few of these Sunday show clips in there too. Don't forget, our VideoCafe crew is getting up new videos daily.

As I raise this mimosa to a prosperous new year for all of us, tell me: what's catching your eye this morning?

Sunday Morning Bobblehead Thread

Normally, I pick some song or clip to launch into a discussion of the bobbleheads on the Sunday news shows. But today, I want to just ignore the painfully one-sided booking and enjoy this slight sense of relief.

For the last three years, I've done the In Memoriam segment, chronicling dutifully and heart-achingly the names of each service member the Pentagon has released. I search for and link to articles from their local papers, because I want you to know that each one of those names was a real person, one with parents, spouses, children, school friends and sweethearts grieving that loss in their lives. I will continue to do the In Memoriam segment, marking the notable names that have shuffled off this mortal coil. But today, let me just take a small pleasure in knowing that this discrete portion of my job is now over. There are more casualties that I will have to write for you; we're still in Afghanistan for the foreseeable future. But today, join me in the grace of knowing that we have ended this chapter of our history.

Paul Simon - I Know What I Know

I know what I know. I know that the concerns of 99 percent of us will be ignored this Sunday. I know that we're going to be lied to and the talking heads anchors won't push back on what they know are bare faced lies. I know that there are good solutions out there. Is Christiane Amanpour on Her Way Out of This Week?

Amanpour speaks to Harvard Class Day, 2010\

When the announcement was made that ABC News was placing Christiane Amanpour in the anchor's seat for their Sunday news show, This Week, I was fairly optimistic. I thought placing someone who was female and had focused primarily on global outlooks would put a fresh and interesting perspective on the news of the day.

However, I completely underestimated the power of the Village to demand conformity. Amanpour's interviews got less and less journalistic as the time wore on, her questions barely anything more than a set up to allow invited politicians to spew forth whatever talking point they wanted. And far too often, those invited politicians reflected just one side of the debate, though I don't know how much blame for that lies with Amanpour. The fact remains that Amanpour was simply a potential that was never fully realized, because her real power lay with being an outsider and that wasn't going to stand with the arbiters of the Inside the Beltway mentality.

It would appear the confines of acceptable Village speak is wearing on Amanpour and it looks like she's ready to jump ship:

Christiane Amanpour may soon be giving up the anchor chair on ABC News’ “This Week.” Sources say network honchos are mulling who might replace the award-winning journalist, who has struggled in the ratings since she jumped from CNN to take the reins of the public affairs show in August 2010. [..]

Sources said she’s been “miserable” at ABC and clashed with network executives. Other sources say the DC bureau never warmed up to Amanpour, who was seen as an outsider, commuting to Washington every week to host the show.

Jake Tapper--among others--have been named as possible replacements, including former host George Stephanopoulos pulling double duty with his Good Morning America anchor job. After six years on the job of monitoring these Sunday shows, I actually would be okay with Tapper getting the permanent seat, rather than as substitute host. Unlike other anchors, he's actually fairly approachable and was the first person to coordinate fact-checking with his show.

ABC - How To Be A Millionaire (1985)

You gotta be a millionaire to get an audience on these Sunday shows, don't you?

Look at that line-up; not a single member of the 99 percent in there. Think about that: all the shows that are supposed to reflect the national discussion, the national concerns and it's peopled, discussed and even produced by individuals who reflect a tiniest fraction of the nation.

So instead of discussing economic inequality, we get there's-no-way-they-will-win Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum. Instead of discussing much needed infrastructure, we get RNC's Reince Preibus going spin to spin against Obama advisers Robert Gibbs and David Axelrod. Instead of discussing jobs, we get John McCain...again. How sad it is that it takes Barney Frank a retirement announcement to get booked on a Sunday show for the first time in over a year. Yet John McCain is on over and over and over again.

You know who is the only person booked who will make a point of talking about the very poor? Angelina Jolie, the multi-million dollar earning superstar, using her fame to bring attention to her work with the UN High Commission on Refugees, although I'll bet dollars to donuts she won't bring up that all these talking heads cheerleading our actions in the Middle East (I'm looking at you, John McCain) created millions of refugees in that war torn area.

But as far as the needy here at home? Again, it's all about the 1 percent.

ABC’s This Week: Rick Santorum; Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA); George Will, ABC; Democratic strategist Donna Brazile; Arianna Huffington, Huffington Post; Major Garrett, National Journal; Angelina Jolie

CBS’ Face the Nation: RNC Chair Reince Priebus; Obama Campaign Advisor Robert Gibbs; John Dickerson, CBS News; Norah O’Donnell, CBS; Nancy Cordes, CBS; Mike Allen, Politico

CNN’s State of the Union with Candy Crowley: Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX); Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN); Sen. John McCain (R-AZ); Alice Rivlin, Brookings Institution; Douglas Holtz-Eakin, American Action Forum; Ron Brownstein, National Journal

CNN's GPS with Fareed Zakaria: Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou; Anne-Marie Slaughter, Princeton University; Ian Bremmer, Eurasia Group; Gideon Rose, Foreign Affairs and Council on Foreign Relations; Nile Gardiner, Heritage Foundation

Tom Coburn, (R-OK); Byron York, The Washington Examiner and Fox News; Mara Liasson, National Public Radio and Fox News; Ed Gillespie, Republican State Leadership Committee; Kirsten Powers, The Daily Beast and Fox News; Kahil Byrd, CEO of Americans Elect
