Sunday Morning Bobblehead Thread
By Nicole Belle Sunday Jul 05, 2009 4:00amOkay, I admit for being a sucker for Fourth of July shows. Stirring songs and fireworks wend their way into my cynical soul and I shake free those constraints to really, really love celebrating our independence. I grew up with a family tradition of a picnic under the stars and the fireworks show at the Hollywood Bowl. At least, that's what I used to do. Last night, I had to content myself with the Boston Pops on TV while comforting my frightened puppy; my husband got to take the kids to a bluff not far from our home where they could watch three different fireworks shows along the bay.
This morning, it's me cowering, wishing I could hide under the sofa at the prospect of the Sunday shows. It's safe to say that Sarah Palin's inexplicable "I'm saving Alaska by quitting early" move will be at the forefront of the conversation, especially on FoxNews Sunday, having bagged successor Lt. Gov. Parnell. VP Joe Biden will be on This Week, but he'll be followed by the intolerable roundtable featuring Tony Blankley and George Will, opining on Iraq, Palin and Franken. The only saving grace? We are spared David Gregory and Meet the Press, which is pre-empted for Wimbledon coverage.
ABC's "This Week" - Vice President Joe Biden.
CBS' "Face the Nation" - Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; Sens. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.
NBC's "Meet the Press" - Pre-empted by coverage of Wimbledon tennis.
NBC's "The Chris Matthews Show" - Panel: Gloria Borger, Bob Woodward, Joe Klein, Tina Brown. (repeat)
CNN's "State of the Union" - Former Secretary of State Colin Powell; Mullen; Queen Noor of Jordan.
CNN's "Fareed Zakaria GPS" - Fareed speaks to British Foreign Secretary David Miliband about why Iran is so angry at Great Britain. Plus, a discussion on aid in Africa -- are celebrities throwing money at the problems or making an actual difference?
"Fox News Sunday" - Mullen; Reps. Steny Hoyer, D-Md., and John Boehner, R-Ohio; Alaska Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell; former Gov. Mike Huckabee, R-Ark.; and former George W. Bush adviser Karl Rove.
So, what's catching your eye this morning?

Looks like Mullen is the "doing the circuit" guy this week.
Almost exactly one year ago, Adm. Mullen went on Fox to discuss Obama's proposed plan to withdraw troops from Iraq. Just about every network selectively clipped Mullen's support for Obama's plan to turn it into a criticism of the plan.
I never heard Mullen "correct the record". Now that Obama is his CiC and the withdrawal is underway, I wonder if he'll bring it up?
My dog got a new toy this weekend and he's already standing here at eight in the morning wanting me to throw it for him. That sounds like more fun than hearing noise on tv. I just might pass on the shows today, we'll see.
Have a good one!
According to Pecor on FnS, one reason Palin stepped down was because "complying with all the Records Requests was costing the state of Alaska $2 million dollars."
Does that cost go away with her stepping down? Why is "the state" paying that bill?
Rove and Huckabee agree Palin's press conference "created more questions than it answered".
The most likely "health care reform" bill to come out of Congress will be such a piece of shit that "liberals" and "progressives" will prefer to eat rat poison and expire than vote for it. But "thePrez" will sign it. At this point, he'd sign onto involuntary organ harvesting if it came to his desk, and claim it was a "bold step" for financing insurance for all.
And don't anybody give me any shit about the "perfect" being the "enemy" of the "good."
If the best the "good" an give us is a reeking pile of corporate privilege, and more private profit from public suffering, thwn it needs all the fucking enemies it can get...Count me IN!
No, I don't feel "better" with "the Prez" in power. The country traded a bumbling, inarticulate, smirking, spoiled fleck of patrician privilege for a smooth, literate, toothy corporate hack; took off the shit-encrusted cowboy boots and slipped into the blood-soaked alligator loafers.
Change? My ass...
he was the "lesser of two evils"....and it's only been _____ weeks/months....and...blah, blah, blah......
What is more shocking woody? The fact that the man is turning out to be nothing more than a corporate rethug in Dems clothing, or the fact that lump sums of people STILL support him and his catchy media slogan speeches?
I really think too many people are feeling "betrayed" when, honestly, not an awful lot of decisions have been made so far to justify feeling that way.
I don't think Obama is any kind of corporate shill, but I DO think he tries TOO hard to be bipartisan to his own (and our) detriment.
or not, the promises of "change" and "yes we can" have been replaced by status quo politics. The man has taken all the momemtum, and thrown it out the window. He COULD have been one of, if not the greatest US president ever, but instead, chose to follow Washington politics as usual. That is the most disappointing aspect of the shooting star. One term. Sad.
No matter how rotten Obama turns out to be, the DemocRATic Party will run him for re-election and no other Democrat will DARE run against him in the primaries.
And to think we just celebrated throwing off the King yesterday....
Pffffttt!!!!
Not in the least.
What surprises me is when SMART people can't tell (or don't know) the difference between the Puke and the Dim kool-aid.
It is completely comprehensible that proles, weighed down by the terrors and errors of the busheviks, would greet ANY successor as a relief. But I would have though the really smart folks would have retained a degree of healthy skepticism...
Sadly, no...
I love the smell of gunpowder in the morning.........reminds me of.........July5th....:-)
Enjoy the "all Palin media orgy" for the last couple days, to be interrupted by the "all Michael Jackson funeral orgy"....Dipshit beauty queens everywhere are in mourning on the passing of Palin from the thrones of power. Dipshit pedophiles everywhere are in mourning on the passing of the freak with musical talent. Wow. Is American Idol still on?
yippe ,
sorry no can do , its all bs , rally around the flag , blow some more people up , most fireworks are sold by native americans what happened to their independence ? . Santa Claus , the easter bunny , the tooth fairy , sorry y'all i just get pissed off at what i perceive as freedom and what is being sold to us and we accept .
Or is it those that yell the loudest , and wave the flag buy the most fire crackers , yet have a hard time putting food on the table for their familys ? , for me the 4th is a time to reflect , to think and honor those who have given their all for us .
Boehner says to Hoyer on FnS that the GOP's 2001 economic plan "created 5 million new jobs".
(And lost 20 million.)
That would be 20 million jobs in the fast food industry.
OOPS! Did I say "industry"? I meant "service".
Taken by illegal aliens.
Boehner says the "Employer mandate" for health coverage that (as Hoyer points out) Wal*Mart supports, is "a deal breaker".
Walmart is not an exporter, so health care costs wouldn't affect its competitiveness.
Since most large businesses are self insured, Walmart might be more competitive against competitors forced to buy insurance, such as small grocery chains.
I'd like to somehow see the small chain get a "self insured" rate. In fact, it's rather stupid to buy insurance if, as a nation, we decided that everyone should have health coverage. For the exact same reasons that large businesses are self-insured, we ought to do the same as a nation. I wonder if there is some kind of approach, perhaps currently "off the table" that could bring this about?
Boehner calls the first 150 days in Congress under Obama "Breathtaking", accusing it of "more taxes and less freedom for the American people."
I'm always quick to notice when Republicans try and claim the mantle of "providing freedom to the American people"... with a bunch of chickenhawks that defended wiretaps, "free speech zones" and "suspending Habeas Corpus" for eight years.
But try to give every American an insurance *option* and suddenly you are depriving them of "freedom".
Nothing says freedom like knowing that any catastrophic illness will put you in debt for the rest of your life.
We need single payer NOW Mr. Prez.

Precise and to the point.....excellent.
Agreed.
Kristol argues that Palin's stepping down is "a shrewd move" so she can "campaign" and "brush up on the issues for her 2012 campaign."
So she needs "four years" to prepare to run for President?
Addendum: Juan Williams points out, "She can't even say she was the one-term governor of Alaska."
Kristol's advice: "She needs to become the chief critic of the Obama Administration."
Oh please God, let it be so! :)

I don't know if I've ever felt particularly patriotic.
To me firecracker shows, marching band music, and car bumperstickers and flags are more show than reality.
I do tend to feel propietership since I'm related to some of the Founding Fathers, and through them some of the crowned heads of Europe.
But the story of my life is dilletantism; I can actually get pretty good at some things and then get bored.
and it was great, as long as the orchestra was playing...
but when they put on piped music - went from country to grease??? -
i had to mute it... gah...
Did they have those male dancers with the white blousy shirts and red fezzes?
test to see (and hear) how much we've devolved since the last fourth.
Last night wasn't as bad as previous 4ths but it still sounded like the battle of Fallujah. Or at least "cleanup ops" as it was reaching it's conclusion.
Wimbledon tennis with breakfast this morning. I'm pretty sure we'll be hearing quite enough conjecturing about Miss Sarah's breathless resignation in the next few days....nay, months!
According to Iranian media, Joe Biden gave a green light to an Israel attack of Iran, while on ABC's "This Week".
"We misread how bad the economy was"

Here's an article I read in The New York Times a couple of days ago. It's quite sobering and I thought I'd cheer all you guys and gals up with it:

And here's a bit of potential good news. There's a new group that is attempting to have the various attorneys who were involved in torture disbarred. Here are some video clips of Bruce Fein and others at the National Press Club:
