Sunday Morning Bobblehead Thread

One of my favorite authors, E.M. Forster, wrote as the final words of his book, Howards End, that we should all strive to "Only Connect". In his mind, the bohemian intellectual middle-class, the spoiled and acquisitive upper class oligarchs and the proud and aspiring working poor in England could meaningfully interact and live harmoniously if they just took some time to understand those outside their station and exercise some empathy. Of course, in the book, that's exactly what doesn't happen, with misunderstandings, well-intentioned but poor advice, careless disregard and flat out prejudice leading to tragic results. But tellingly, the greatest burden of the tragedies falls to the least protected of each class, with the poorest suffering the ultimate penalty.

And I think there are still many truths and parallels that can still be derived from Forster's examination of Edwardian class struggles. And certainly, the country would be greatly benefited from all of us trying to only connect to one another. Empathy seems like our scarcest resource, and yet it is so easy to manufacture. And I think that much of the blame for the dearth of empathy has to be placed on the Republican Party, who, like the upper class Wilcoxes of Howards End, frame every issue as a zero-sum game: anything anyone else has or asks for means something taken from you. Even when it doesn't. It's hard to be empathetic to anyone else's situation when you think it means less for you. Watch them this Sunday, see if you don't agree.

And who more perfect to exemplify this motif than John "If it's Sunday, I'm on TV" McCain? Grampy McSame had to pull a hard right to win his primary challenge, and do a 180 on immigration reform. Which version do you suppose we'll see on Fox News Sunday--the empathetic reform-minded McCain or the hostile "build the dang fence" McCain? And which version of Tony Blair--the Clinton BFF or the Bush Lap Dog--will we see on This Week? And it will be interesting to see who can be the most empathetic on Face the Nation--AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka or National Small Business Assoc. head Todd McCracken. And not to imply that this lack of empathy is limited only to Republicans--let's hear Laura Tyson and Moody's Mark Zandi wax economic on Face the Nation.

ABC's "This Week" - Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

CBS' "Face the Nation" - Laura Tyson, former Clinton economic adviser; Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics.

NBC's "Meet the Press" - Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.; David Plouffe, President Barack Obama's 2008 campaign manager.

NBC's "The Chris Matthews Show" - Panel: Cynthia Tucker, Howard Fineman, Michael Duffy and Norah O'Donnell. Topics: If Democrats Lose Big this Fall, Will All Fingers Point at President Obama Himself? The Top Five Republicans Definitely Running for President

CNN's "State of the Union" - Todd McCracken, president of the National Small Business Association; Richard Trumka, president of the AFL-CIO.

CNN's "Fareed Zakaria GPS" - William Browder, once the largest foreign investor in Russia. Then, have you ever met a jihadi? Despite Britain's serious crackdown on radical Islamic activity over the last few years, homegrown jihadis continue to preach their message in the U.K. Fareed sits down with one of London's own radicals, Anjem Choudary. And then, hers is a story of rags to ultimate riches. Zhang Xin grew up in the slums of Hong Kong and is now worth billions of dollars. Zhang, one of China's biggest real estate developers, speaks candidly about what she finds wrong with the Chinese system that made her so rich.

"Fox News Sunday" - Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.; Democratic National Committee Chairman Tim Kaine.

What's catching your eye this morning?

Some stuff you can't make up!

I collected my observations so far before this thread was ready:

FnS:
McCain, ending the Bush Tax Cuts and giving tax breaks to small business instead is "class warfare".

McCain admitted GOP has not yet expressed an agenda.

McCain says "Democrats cut Medicare and are eliminating Medicare Advantage", so Republicans are the Party of protecting Medicare and Social Security.

After presented with evidence immigration and border crime is DOWN, McCain argues that the border has become MORE violent and drug crime is out of control.

McCain criticized President Obama for setting a timetable for Afghanistan: "You don't not tell the enemy when you are going to leave". This is, word-for-word, what he said about Iraq during the campaign.

Tim Kaine points out to Wallace that, though current economic numbers aren't great, they are an improvement over the monthly negative GDP and job numbers we were seeing when Obama took office.

Bizarre: Steven Hayes says, "If I heard him right, Tim Kaine says this Administration has passed eight small business tax cuts", so a ninth is going to make a difference? HELLOOOO? Isn't that EXACTLY what Republicans think??? "We just need more tax cuts"?

Hayes "reports" why businesses aren't hiring: "economic uncertainty" and a lack of demand. He did NOT say "taxes", nor did he explain how extending the Bush tax cuts would change that.

According to Wallace and Hayes, commenting on the economy during Obama's Iraq speech is indicative of a President who "to some degree" is not committed to the War on Terror.

Regarding Obama's 2011 timeline for Afghanistan, Hayes says "the way to win the war" is to let your enemies know "you aren't leaving". If, after 9 years, that is all it took, we would of won by now.

MtP: Lindsey Graham says "we must extend the Bush Tax cuts" to "help small business and family farms"... the two groups exempt from paying the Estate Tax.

"WE'RE SAFER!" After a ridiculous list of reasons why we needed to invade Iraq (in response to Engle saying Iraq was a distraction), Graham insists invading Iraq has made us safer... From what?

Plouffe: Giving the Republicans the keys back at this point would be like giving Herbert Hoover the keys back in 1936.

FtN: Zandi blames the "uncertainty" over whether or not the tax cuts will be extended as to why companies aren't hiring.

MtP: Erin Bernett: "Fact is, we are having the fastest job recovery of any recession in the past 25 years."

Something went screwy with the scheduling and the posts had all these random times to publish.

I'm still trying to figure out what happened.

I turned the TV on. Infomercial for a toaster oven...changed the channel several times, commercials and commercials.

I put the Guide on and turned to Channel 2. Local news. Murders, fire raging somewhere near a highway, some debate about schools... I turn the channel.

Ahh, national news. Important stuff....I listen to the yapping dogs talk about 40, 50, maybe even both the House and Senate going to the Repubicans. Their little suppressed smirks make my head explode....

When confronted on whether Iraq/Saddam was a distraction from Afghanistan, Blair fumbles for justification, but finally can only say, "We don't know" if Saddam could of been contained.

He later argues for extending sanctions against Iran with a threat of invasion "later" as a means of containing that country. Doesn't quite jibe with his argument for invading Iraq.

Blair reminds me of R2 D2 of Star Wars, except he plays for the Dark Side. I expected him to throw up his hands at any moment and say "Oh dear!"

Nicole: Empathy seems like our scarcest resource, and yet it is so easy to manufacture.

Reminds me of Groucho Marx:

The secret of life is honesty and fair dealing. If you can fake that, you've got it made.

There's no way to "manufacture" empathy. Either your heart is open to others or it isn't.

Honestly, I used the term "manufacture" to correlate to the idea of empathy being a resource.

I agree with you, either your heart is open to others, or it isn't. But what frustrates me is that the entire raison d'etre of the GOP is to close off your heart to others. I've gotten into several Twitter/Facebook exchanges with Republican/TP types and have trapped them by the selfishness of their beliefs, only to have them flip themselves out of it by saying, "I don't care about these examples, it just means they're taking advantage of the system."

MountainMan23's picture

My understanding is that a child learns empathy very young, probably in the first 2-3 years.

So in that sense we can manufacture empathy - by the way we treat our children.

Krugman is singing my song on the point "Demand" drives the economy, "not tax cuts".

"Tax cuts" DON'T CREATE JOBS, DEMAND DOES.

Krugman goes on to make excellent points (as always).

My kid has wrestled the remote from me and is watching cartoons. I can't keep up with the shows this morning.

Sorry, there's no way I can watch the Sunday stuff w/o a remote. I'm at a new motel in Clearwater, FL and still getting used to the time change. I've got 125 channels (good) but two broken remotes (bad). I figured out that 41 is MSNBC and 99 is the channel guide, but that's about it so far. And God knows I need a mute button. Too much work today--sorry.

Nicole-- How is your nephew doing?

The little guy is such a fighter. He was released from the hospital yesterday, a full two weeks ahead of schedule, because he was doing so well.

He'll need to be monitored by a cardiologist for the rest of his life and likely get another surgery around adolescence to ensure that his heart will be able to function fully for his adult size, but right now, he's knocking my socks off with his determination to be healthy.

I'm looking forward to seeing him smiling and being adorable come Thanksgiving.

fastfeat's picture

Sounds like he'll be terrorizing your households before long...:)

By Thanksgiving he should be well past that uncooked pot roast look that all newborns vaguely remind me of and well into adorable. It's a good thing I like pot roast.

George Will argues that Israel won't wait "five years" to contain Iran.

Tom Friedman argues that there may come a point where containing Iran is more important than continuing the war in Afghanistan.

Can I just say that all of this highlights the Republican's stupidity and the ignorance of refusing to talk to Iran BEFORE they become a nuclear power rather than waiting until after, which sends the message that we reward rogue nations that obtain WMD's by finally agreeing to talk to them rather than bomb them?

This phrase has had a special place in my heart ever since I read Paul Fussell's book 'The Great War and Modern Memory'. One of the best books I've ever read. Poetry, irony, and trench warfare- who could ask for more? Have a great labor day folks.

This weeks list of soldiers killed in Arg/Iraq was exceedingly long, and it struck me just how numb we've all become after seeing this list week after week.

Every now and then I see a video clip in a YouTube news channel of an entire British village turning out for the funeral of one of their sons or daughters killed in Iraq or Afghanistan.

And I distinctly recall video of the national days of mourning and the funereal cortege through Italian streets when 15 of their carabinieri were slain early in the Invasion of Iraq.

Or the grief of a Canadian village when one of theirs returns slain.

But here in the US their names are just lost in the list.

Collectively we have no more regard for the lives of our own than for those we slaughter.

Why

Why does anyone watch the Sunday morning pundit circus? Why does anyone pay attention to Will, Friedman, Kristoff, Rich, Dowd, Collins, Milbank, Broder? Take to dog for a walk instead of listening to these guys barking.

Nicole Belle's picture

You know, we get this every week, and it always surprises me that people don't get it.

Yes, these people, by and large, are navel-gazing, self-important Villagers interested in promoting the status quo.

BUT, they also frame and shape the national dialog and there are too many Americans who don't have the time or wherewithal to filter through all this to determine whether or not these bobbleheads are telling them the truth.

The whole point of CROOKS & LIARS is to highlight the relationship that the media has to the general public in informing them and in promoting political agendas over others.

We're all very happy that you can see these bobbleheads for what and who they are...we're doing this for others then. Feel free to comment on other posts.

Mugsy's picture

I have yet to figure out what anyone thinks they are accomplishing by criticizing those of us who sit through these Sunday programs as a part of their weekly routine, only to be more than happy to enjoy the benefits of reading the choice tidbits posted here on C&L that result from someone sitting through these programs to find those gems.

Nicole-
We all know what the people who say this stuff mean. As you say we see it every week. And what these jokers say on the Sunday shows reverberate all week as the talking points for both sides.

The biggest line I have seen/heard via Mugsy is that Mcdangfence admitted GOP has not yet expressed an agenda. This is HUGE!!! Hey Democrats, this is a campaign ad that has written itself.
