For his many faults, you gotta love the politician in California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger that admits that essentially, the majority of Americans want the government to focus on Democratic Party platforms, not the rigid ideology of the current Republican Party of cutting taxes above all else.

I think you can also make it very simple, and that is, you know, that Republicans have not provided for what the people need. And I think that's why Jindal is partially right on that, or he's right on that, because, you know, it is all about what the people of America need right now, and have we provided that as a party? [..]

Let me tell you something. When it comes to building roads and people driving on the roads -- it's Democrats, Republicans, independents, decline to state -- everyone wants to use those roads.

Everyone's kids -- Republicans' kids, Democrats' kids -- everyone is in the school. They want to have great education. When it comes to clean air and protecting our environment and fighting global warming, everyone in America wants to be part of that.

They absolutely do. Americans want to know that levees will not fail and force them out of their homes, bridges will not collapse during rush hour and that we're providing our children with the most opportunity to succeed for the future, not to mention a non-polluted world to live in. And as is patently obvious, that won't come from Republican governance. Even the Governator know that the Republican Party has lost their way:

Remember that so many times there's dialogue about, you know, we have to go back to our core values. What is that? What is core? How far does core go back in history in America, the word core? Does it go back 30 years? Does it go back 50 years? Because we know that Teddy Roosevelt talked about universal health care. So they're off the core for a long time ago already. He has talked about protecting our environment. So they've been off for a long time on that. I mean, let's be honest. Ronald Reagan -- let's go to Eisenhower, for instance. Eisenhower has built the highway system in America and he's poured billions of dollars into infrastructure. Where Republicans today say, well, that's spending. We shouldn't spend. That's not spending. That's investing in the future of America.

So there's a lot of things that they have been off on, if they want to go and talk about the core values. But maybe their definition of core values is maybe different. But I mean, so I think it's all nonsense talk. I think if they just talk about one thing, what do we need now? Now, America needs to be rebuilt, because we haven't really rebuilt America for decades. So we need to rebuild America, fix the bridges, fix the highways, fix the buildings, tunnels and all of those kind of things we need to do. And then we have to go and create great relationships with our partners overseas, with the world, and to build those relationships again. And we have to take care of health care. We have to take care of our environment. And we have to build an energy future. Those are the things that people want right now. And I know in the poll numbers in America -- I mean in California, that's what the people want.

See? Like Arnold says, the people don't want today's Republican Party.

Indeed. Now that Republicans have largely driven away their Goldwater/libertarian/fiscal discipline leaders and constituency, they are left with cultural authoritarianism. Neo-fascists and theocrats are all they have left, and GOP stands for nothing more than Guardians Of Prejudice.

I don't like Gov. Schwarzenegger, but I'm not wholly and completely hostile to him, since he's not a rabid authoritarian.

Heh, do you think it can be done in four years? Two-thirds of the House, two-thirds of the Senate, and three-fourths of the states? Seems a tall order, but I suppose it could happen.

you don't think there is a difference between Arnold or Mike Bloomberg (who was/is a Republican) and Jesse Helms or Strom Thurmaond? I'm from the south and grew up with those politicians. I live in NYC now, believe me, I know first hand there is a difference especially on social issues

MindFever's picture

The only difference is their appeearance ,i stipulate...
Arnold is not so stupid to create panic. He WANTS people to accept him,to be as much likable as possible and after this speech 1 thing popped into my mind: he will run in 2012.He already is researching how could he change the constitution.
And as the wise guy above us said, look what they've done few years ago:patriot act, torture issue, motives to invade iraq etc.
There is an old Chinese saying: If you capture your enemy, bribe him or try to make him work for you.Its alot more cheaper. (in that context at least ;) )
But it is true, CORE VALUES is nonsense.I too allways felt this approach was wrong.

Uh, yeah, everyone wants to use them. But Republicans don't want the government to invest in the infrastructure to make them safe.

Everyone's kids -- Republicans' kids, Democrats' kids -- everyone is in the school. They want to have great education. When it comes to clean air and protecting our environment and fighting global warming, everyone in America wants to be part of that.

Heh, I'm not sure everyone in America wants to be a part of that. Know Knothing Knation is still quite strong. In any case, it's all just peachy to say that people want bipartisan solutions to all of these problems, but the Republicans have been actively campaigning against public education and environmental regulation.

Somehow Charlie Brown always wants to believe Lucy will hold the ball steady for him this time. No matter how poorly the rest of the Peanuts gang treats him, he still remains true to his principles that all the kids deserve to play in the game.

Reconciliation and bipartisanship can be the acts of grown-ups. But reconciliation with Republicans who feel Democrats are not legitimate players in the first place, and who have no intention of negotiating in good faith, is the act of an extremely naive person, a masochist or an abuse victim.

I suppose we can choose which one the Democrats actually are. In any case, the Republicans will move the ball away as the Democrats try to kick it. It's just what they do.

When Repubs trash "Kal-ee-fornia" as being all things elitist/leftist/socialist, do they also bring up the fact that their Governor was a former action movie star and bodybuilder? Of course not, he's only prevented from being their choice for Pres. cuz he can't be. Oh the irony. Thankfully if you ask me. I cant imagine the race for the White House getting more ridiculous than it did this year.

What was the appeal of Arnold in the first place, that he would use Terminator like powers to resurrect California?

And then turns around, and says he's against Prop. 8, but won't really go out and campaign hard for it.

He laments the loss, and then acts as our coach, telling us to keep pumping up.

Definitely a cynical politician.

i know peeps here hate republicans no matter what. but if more republicans were like ahnold i think america would be better served, democratically.

ultimately though america needs a multi party system for long term political security. to keep the national dialog serious and on the issues. even if republicans offer a real alternative in the middle, someday down the road america may find itself in the same ridiculous nonsense politics like in the last 16 years.

Arnold is a decent governer, he just needs to reign in that stupid "no new taxes" bullshit mantra from his party. Tax my fucking ass off but then I want to drive down a smooth and modern highway. Again, WTF are these people smoking? Wow, tax revenue? To pay for government progams and services????! Asshole Repugnic*nts. Some of us are trying to get something done here instead of jackin' off with Jesus.... Idiots, most of the lot of them.

Rufus T. Firefly's picture

I have one question for every politician who has an "R" or "D" behind their name who keeps saying "bipartisan" and things like 'I want to serve AMERICAN values, not Democratic or Republican values.' Here's that question: Why do you belong to one of the two major political parties in America if you want no distinctions?

If the United States' citizenry wanted a mixture of Republican and Democratic policies you would have seen that on November 4th. Instead it was an deluge of Democratic victories all over the country (except the South) in all levels.

So Arnold,
If you believe what your shoveling in this clip.

Why did you vote against Obama ?
Why do you affiliate with the Republican party?

They do not believe in anything you said. So how do
you identify with todays republicans?

And by the way Arnold, Hows your buddy Darrel Issa.?

Arnie repeatedly above says "they"(republicans)... 'they.. 'they'....

however, if he wasnt a coward, and IF(!!) he was an honest man, he would
have said 'we'.. and 'I'...

but alas, he is a coward, and a liar.

Clavis's picture

Everyone's kids -- Republicans' kids, Democrats' kids -- everyone is in the school. They want to have great education.

That's incorrect. Lots of Republican knuckleheads think that the rich nobility should attend private schools and the unwashed Wal-mart masses should just homeschool (i.e. no school). This guarantees an end to class mobility and a return to traditional values... a.k.a. "compassionate feudalism".

Arnold's talking style is kinda rambling. Can you imagine Arnold and Palin on a ticket? We would need a team of interpreters. There would be hours of punditry devoted to interpretations of what they are actually saying.

ravinnium's picture

That's understandable. As another person whose native language is not English, I say that I also ramble.

Palin, of course, is unacceptable for a supposedly "real" American.

If Republicans could get Schwarzenegger's message, then they'd be RELEVANT again...

Joffler's picture
WOW

You could hear this and say WOW!

But it's not what they're saying. It's what they're not saying. Look for difference between word and deed.

ravinnium's picture

Finally, someone who can lead the Republican party into the correct direction.

Hopefully, his wife influences him even more now than ever.

How soon you forget the bullying name calling of Obama and Kerry by this man. He can sink as low as his testicles are now due to his prolonged use of steroids. How much influence does Maria have, how much Dem. like pillow talk transfers into policies? Did this man have a clue at all before the Repugs thought the Terminator was a fantasy of themselves as Republican heroes?

Until the republicans realize that we love america just as much as they do and maybe even more. Arnold is right. People want to really take care of country first and families. We want some type of single payer plan for healthcare for people who really need it. My son works at a restaurant and pays for healthcare for himself and his daughter that is really high. Now that is alot for a young man to pay when he really doesn't make much. He doesn't want to put his child on TNcare because he doesn't want a handout. He can qualify for some aid but won't get it because he thinks to many people take advantage already. I told him he is entitled to it because we all pay our taxes. I worry because my husband and I are tapping into our savings to help him. But I understand where he is coming from.

Southern Yankee

DevilDog21's picture

Republicans don't love this country which is why they would prefer fascism or theocracy. They want a form of government where the minority rules over the will of the people.

I don't call that loving my country, I call that remaking it in my selfish interest.

RD's picture

The rebranding has begun. By the time the first term is over, Iraq will be the democrats fault...

DevilDog21's picture

he makes a great point about the GOP's "core values". What are those exactly and when did they change so radically? This Republican Party is nothing at all like the one my Dad was a lifelong member of.

Once they took in the radical religious right, they began to marginalize themselves and all the true conservatives know it, which is why they are abandoning the party. All that leaves is neocons and religious fanatics who have too much access to media.

I never understood how the Terminator could stand for the Stepford Husbands.
Perhaps the mighty guy will see the light and fire a nice fat July 4th rocket at Bush's backside yet.

MacChick's picture

The problem is that all the things that he talks about as being "core values" are things that George Bush and the Republican party doesn't support. They'd rather throw trillions of dollars into a war that the majority doesn't want. The Republican party stopped listening to the masses long ago, which is why they are now in this predicament. They deserve to become extinct like dinosaurs.

He makes some sense. I'm not sure why he's calling the Republican party "they" but he makes some good points.
