{{Facepalm}}

In a move as predictable as Lucy pulling the football away from Charlie Brown, Democrats are using Social Security scare tactics to gain ground before the November election. President Barack Obama is not only tolerating this classic old politics maneuver by his party — he is leading the charge.

Amid a flurry of Democratic Party news releases and press conferences warning voters that Republicans are targeting Social Security for destruction, the President devoted his radio and Internet address last week to commemorating the 75th anniversary of the signing of the law that created the program. He cautioned that "some Republican leaders in Congress don't seem to have learned any lessons" from the past and are "pushing to make privatizing Social Security a key part of their legislative agenda if they win a majority in Congress." This familiar refrain might indeed help the Democrats limit their midterm losses, but Obama's involvement shows that on this issue he is putting party before bipartisanship and that he sometimes can be tone-deaf to the human element required to change Washington's acid culture.

I read the new GOP road map on TMO and privatizing Social Security a key part of their legislative agenda.

Well it is...

Evet's picture

What social security?

Dalton's picture

...and comment less. Social Security is not in any trouble and is funded for at least another 30 years. The B.S. that it's going broke is nothing more than the usual wing nut and tea bagger drivel.

once again, the supposed lock-box is ledger entries, you want something to back up social security? stockpile copper, it is going nowhere but up. taking care of our citizens should be, and in reality is, part of the general budget.

Evet's picture

Ya got any copper?

derekthered's picture

don't laugh, with electric cars, expanded power grid, copper is pricey, hardly scrap.

That Obama is engaging in an incredibly cynical sleight of hand?! He's trying to paint the Republicans as the boogeyman, when the boogeyman is actually himself. *Obama* is the one who formed the Catfood Commission stacked with rightwingers, 14 of the 18 members and BOTH co-chairs against Social Security, including the lunatic Alan Simpson - personally appointed by Obama himself - who has been on a lifelong crusade against SS and hates the "lesser" people. Obama's Catfood Commission symbolizes everything that is wrong with Washington (and Obama) - greedy elites taking the 'little people's' money to further enrich themselves.

The Republicans already failed on privatization under Bush and aren't likely to be broaching it again anytime soon. Obama is the one in power and Obama is deadset on cutting SS, reflecting his contempt for the New Deal and the ordinary American. Whenever Obama is handed an opportunity to make his corporate benefactors happy and in the process step on the backs of ordinary Americans, he jumps on it, but always in a secretive and dishonest manner, hiding under Republican and Blue Dog skirts.

See Social Security: The Republicans Are Right -

President Obama's comments on Social Security privatization in the last week sound like something that he stole from the playbook of the last Democrat in the White House. Just as President Clinton tried to tell us that the veracity of one of his statements on the Lewinski affair depended on "what your definition of 'is' is," President Obama is telling us that he will stand up against Republican plans to privatize Social Security.

That is nice to hear, but it really is beside the point. President Bush did try to privatize Social Security in 2005 and, no doubt, many Republicans would still like to do so today, but privatization is not currently on the agenda of their leadership. The immediate threat to Social Security is plans to cut benefits by either changing the benefit formula and/or raising the retirement age.

This threat comes not just from the Republican Party, but from the top levels of the Democratic Party as well. Rep. Steny Hoyer, the majority leader in the House, explicitly called for raising the retirement age to 70 in a speech earlier this summer. Erskine Bowles, the co-chairman of the deficit commission appointed by President Obama, also explicitly said that cuts to Social Security would be on the agenda of the deficit commission. Of course, former Wyoming Sen. Alan Simpson, the Republican that President Obama appointed as the other co-chair of the commission, never misses an opportunity to say that he wants to cut Social Security.

Give me the fourteen names and a link for each proving they are against Social Security.
Otherwise I consider you to be a left version of FOX railing against the "Ground Zero Mosque."

Ricky considers me the left version of Fox! Oh nose!! The talking points are getting ever so original! Here a table for you - from a Professional Left blog which I'm sure you'll find S-C-A-R-Y; unfortunately, the corporatist blogs/news don't seem to want to investigate this, so that left either the Professional Left or the Teabaggers! Man up!

Obama Packs Debt Commission With Social Security Privatization & Benefit Cut Supporters

Soooo..from this table, 14 of the 18 members are 'likely' to cut SS benefits. Some "bipartisanship". The 2 co-chairs are real progressives:

Member Open to cutting benefits? YES - Bowles is on the record that the commission will “mess with Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, because if you take those off the table, you can’t get there.

Expressed support for privatization? YES - Negotiated deal with Newt Gingrich to raise Social Security retirement age & some privatization under Clinton; deal was stopped by Lewinski scandal.

Conflicts of Interest: Sits on the board of Morgan Stanley. Wife Candice is on the board of JP Morgan Chase. Finance, insurance & real estate sector donated over $3 million to his unsuccessful 2004 Senate bid.

Alan Simpson, R-WY-ret, Co-Chair -

Open to cutting benefits? YES. When asked about cuts he would recommend to the President and Congress on CNBC, Simpson said “We are going to stick to the big three,” meaning Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

Expressed support for privatization? YES - “[A]s recently as 2005, Simpson…supported attempts by President George Bush to privatize Social Security by turning part of the pension and insurance program into millions of individual investment accounts, which by now would have lost 20 percent of their value.” (2/27/2010)

Conflicts of Interest: Simpson and Peterson were appointed to Bill Clinton’s Bipartisan Commission on Entitlement Reform in 1994. Both voted to recommend partial privatization of Medicare, and raising Social Security age of eligibility to 70, Simpson awarded “Economic Patriot” award by Peterson’s Concord Coalition in 1996.

MountainMan23's picture

There already IS bipartisanship in the Social Security Two-Step.

The Republicans are playing the Bad Cop: "Elect us & we'll privatize it!"

Obama & the Dems playing Good Cop: "We'll save you from the Republicans!"

But what is Obama's plan?

Oh yeah .. wait until the CatFood Commission makes it's non-negotiable "recommendations."

See? It's already a bipartisan approach to Social Security.

substantive to say, or just the name calling? Can the DLC crowd argue persuasively for anything Obama does, or must it always resort to personal attacks and diversions in an attempt to shut down discussion and keep the little people from analyzing his policies (just look at the gibberish on this thread for an example of diversionary tactics)?

What do you think the goal of Obama's Catfood Commission is? Is it to strengten SS? Is it to raise taxes and preserve SS? Surely, you must have an opinion knowing who he appointed and given Obama's past policies and statements on Social Security.

Are Democrats allowed to discuss it, or does Obama expect the 'base' to STFU and trust in all-knowng, superior intelligence and 11D-thinking of Obama and the Washington elite? Are we supposed to wait in obedient silence until the Great One pronounces the ever-lasting wisdom of the esteemed elite on the hallowed commission?

C & L had an entire thread yesterday devoted to attacking the "professional Left" blog, The Huffington Post, basically because it regularly criticizes Obama's leadership. What makes the Huffington Post so threatening to the Professional DLC is that it attracts a very large readership and has some excellent writers, a real threat to the Obama Administration, who would rather the "childish" Americans pull the wool over their eyes and let him tell them what to do (ie., let him kick them to the curb in obedient silence). So, is next step censorship for the Obama Administration (or C & L)?

Of course, I give Obama too much credit, and actually DO fear him meeting in the middle between keeping it and getting rid of it, (i.e. cuts, raising retirement age, ect.)

Mark Halperin is a pompous Jackass. Conniving and disingenuous. His comments on the Mosque are a repetition in spirit of the ones he made on Social Security. His punditry is fake and constant smirk a give away of his thoughtlessness. He makes it light of heinous role of Newt Gingrich or Franklin Graham and the stoking of the fire by 100% of Republican / Tea Party leadership by making Obama's speech as the real culprit.
