Tom Coburn thinks he's a priest and not a Senator

s-COBURN-large_86475.jpg

Somebody has to tell Sen. Tom Coburn that he was elected to office and is bound by their rules.

(UPI) -- Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., said Thursday he would invoke privilege if asked about advice he gave to Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., on handling an extramarital affair.

Coburn said he was talking to Ensign about his tryst with a former staffer in his capacities as a doctor and a man of the cloth, Roll Call reported.

"I was counseling him as a physician and as an ordained deacon," Coburn said. "That is privileged communication that I will never reveal to anybody. Not to the (Senate) Ethics Committee, not to a court of law, not to anybody."

Doug Hampton, whose wife had engaged in an affair with Ensign, has claimed Coburn urged Ensign to pay the Hamptons millions of dollars after Hampton confronted Ensign about the affair.

"I categorically deny everything he said," Coburn said. Coburn said he has acted as a counselor to other lawmakers in the past. "Ya'll don't know about all the people I've counseled," he told Roll Call when asked why Ensign sought his help.

Coburn is bound by congressional law, I would imagine, and if he's going to stick his nose into salacious dealings that may cross the line, then he'll need to answer whatever questions come his way.

Coburn will still lie even under oath. That's what corrupt Reslugs do.

... heck I have hear some fundies claim that lying was OK if the end warranted it. Never mind it is supposed to be a sin, but that insight sort of provided me with an explanation on why these idiots can maintain such levels of logical dissonance through their everyday lives...

Religion supplies these idiots a mechanism to excuse their own lack of morals, while at the same time giving them a faux higher ground from which force other people to meet a set of standard from which they themselves are immune.

of course lying is ok ("w" bush, the dickster)
it's already legal for some = repugs

With 12 years of parochial education, I won't believe that until the altar boys testify against him.

his paycheck needs to be docked for every hour he spends "advising" others about their personal problems. Only because he's a man of the cloth, of course.

talk about the blind leading the blind!

is, in one way, very good for exposing this crap that has gone on under darkness of cover. (mine) Just wait until Cindy tells her story.

Our own Eddie the Egsign will be on his knees.

Maybe sarah will change them.

As noted on Maddows show of 07/14, and referencing Zach Wamp, The Family has it's own rules of conduct and ethics, that seems to exclude Christianity (which seems odd that most, if not all its C St occupants are supposedly Born Again or conservative Christians). Wamp also stated in a paper interview that the roomys were "bipartisan." Does that mean Democrats also walk the hallways of C St?

lord knows that DC is infested with willing participants in an undemocratic secretive organization that uses religion as a shield to protect their constant power-grabs.

...son of a bitch, get it in writing. His word isn't worth shit. Not with the good lord telling him how to fuck you on the deal.

"Coburn is bound by congressional law, I would imagine, and if he's going to stick his nose into salacious dealings that may cross the line, then he'll need to answer whatever questions come his way."

He may be able to get away with this. But, I would think that he will have to follow the rules of the Senate.
If he is in fact breaking these rules/laws he will be held in contempt.
And will be either censured or impeached. And forced to resign.
So have at it Coburn. We could use another seat.

An ordained deacon is a minister? I didn't know that.

"Dr. Coburn returned to Muskogee where he specializes in family medicine, obstetrics and the treatment of allergies. Dr. Coburn has personally delivered more than 4,000 babies."

That quote is from his own website. So what kind of advice regarding obstetrics did Ensign need?

Is he claiming that anything he says to anyone about anything is protected because he's a deacon and a doctor specializing in obstetrics and allergies?

I only have one question for the "deacon doctor".

Did he provide birth control to the mistress, and was he a Senator when he did that so as not to be in conflict with his religious teachings and personal beliefs?

:)

So what kind of advice regarding obstetrics did Ensign need?

Yes indeed. One does wonder. It's all fun and games until somebody gets knocked up.

That, on top of being a Republican, gives him ultimate power--in his mind. Pile on the Christianity, and it's the perfect storm. Besides being an Okie.... LOL

MD

For Coburn also means Mental Defective.

"I am not sure what it is, Mrs. Pinheaded. You are either six months pregnant or your husband was eating shellfish again before he went down on you."

any "privilege" of information is held by what is said by the patient, not the doctor; or the penitent, not the priest. coburn is saying that his advise can be kept secret. that is completely ignorant of the law. you don't have to be a lawyer to recognize that coburn is talking out of his ass on this.

Reporter: “….It seems like by all accounts that it seems to be a secretive group…”

GOP Representative Wamp: “But it’s not. I’m just telling you. It’s where people live. And you go there for fellowship…they didn’t want to violate people’s private decisions to come there. And you know what happens when you share and the media writes about it? Nobody comes and the whole thing evaporates…it’s not secretive. That’s the only way something like this can exist. That’s why it happens that way, man. So, it’s not like anybody’s trying to hide anything. It’s so that people can feel like they can.”

Still trying to figure out whether Wamp is talking about “C” Street or the Best Little Whorehouse in DC. Personally, I think Ensign, Coburn, Sanford and the rest of the born-again politicians living there spend most of their time pulling each others puds.

As a general rule, doctors and patients do not get privilege, they get confidentiality. Two different concepts, and the Federal Rules of Evidence do not recognize doctor-patient privilege. States vary, but none allow for full 'legal' privilege between doctor/patient. Coburn should know this because in Oklahoma doctors are required by law to reveal child abuse, and communicable or venereal diseases to authorities, thus destroying privilege.

"I am not a financial advisor...but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last nite." - Sen. Coburn.

This is ticklish,

Are we saying we're against medical and counciling privacy?

It's different than the usual abused claim of executive priviledge (which doesn't exist with Congress anywho.)

but rather annoyed with the specious example given here.

We must stop the dissolution of the specious!

I'm not against medical and counciling privacy, but no doctor or minister can claim everything he says to anyone about anything is protected, it has to be during the practice of doctor patient relationship. If Coburn was talking to Ensign about a medical condition then by all means that is confidential. If he was talking to him about the affair he was having and the best way to cover it up, that isn't medical advise.......that's two good old boys figuring out shit.

From becoming a minister or deacon or some such thing?
And then being able to claim confidentiality ?

Well...the only thing that MIGHT stop them...and that's assuming they have any integrity (yes...a mighty leap of faith), but abstention from self abuse might do it.

The separation of church and state comes to mind.

It's kind of like when a group of men who gather to watch football games, eat salty snacks, and drink beer file with the IRS as a church.

Throughout church history these warnings concerning professing Christians who deceive even the elect have seldom been taken seriously.

"What's to stop any Senator"... In our representative democracy, I would say... our representative(s). :-/

I believe, whether you realize it or not... You just pointed to the mechanism, for which much mischief has arisen and will continue to do so indefinitely.

Just review the TAX issue to see which entities are burdened and which are not. Whom currently appears to have an unreasonable concern with taxes and their encumbering effect on liberty or freedom. Great question Muddy

Now if he wished to plead the 5th... that's a different story?

I didn't know that praying to the god of deception and arrogance counted as a legitimate religion. To self centered Neocons I guess any flimsy ass excuse will do to justify their wretched actions.

Wonder what's next for Coburn---roll in rapture in the Senate aisle? Give a speech in tongues? What a cruel perversion of spirituality.

They are so closeted it's obvious. What grown men develop secret groups like this? It's a gay tree house.

that is a crazy claim... there is no tree!

Are they trying to create shades of Dr. Lewis Fielding?

"As a doctor, John, make sure you wrap it up. Despite what we've convinced our voting block, HIV/AIDS is not just God's punishment for homos. As a preacher, does she have an a$$ like a 10 year old boy?"

"religion poisons everything."

It has to have people to screw it up.

People are the problem, not religion as a whole.

and those of you who don't like it have to bear it.

Religion as a whole is the problem. People are the solution.

You Meet Em Where Ever Yo Go!

Is "confession" even part of whichever sect Coburn belongs to?

Deacons don't have any ordained powers or privileges. However, Coburn is in "The Family" so they have different rules.

I have to wonder what medical services an OBGYN could be providing to John Ensign.

What a schmuck!

.

These GOP are a real piece of work. I really think that we should just divide this nation into 3rds, The west coast for the Progressives, the East coast for the Native American Indians, and central Bible-Belt area for those who would swallow the kind of TRIPE that spews out DAILY from the Republican party. Yep,yep, yep, his name alone holds the "burn" to prove C0-Burn is a demonic christian deacon, probably a mormon cult. These "demonic christians" need the Christ in order to believe in their "devil". But they believe more in the "devil" that's why they are demonic...."Pay the money dude...the filthy lucre is payment for your sins against satan"....The Messanic Christian, on the other hand, would have given better advice.....proven.....The catagoric denial is obvious proof Co-Burns group is wronggggggggg.(Ronald666Wilson Reagan is a member...boo)! I've long been a fan of C&L, but you have not been paying attention for the past God-knows-how-many years if you think the Senate is going to do anything but roll over and let Coburn do what he wants. There is no difference between red and blue when it comes to the Senate; they all live under different rules than the rest of us, and honesty and integrity are routinely scoffed at.

Let's go play with Al Franken

So, in addition to being a lying Right wing Senator, he's a child molester too?

6 years: Rev. Charles Newman, 58, Philadelphia, PA, was found guilty of stealing $900,000. The priest and former principal of the largest Roman Catholic high school In Philadelphia stole money from the school and his religious order to buy the silence of victims he molested after providing them with drugs and alcohol. Former student Arthur Baselice III told authorities that Newman started sexually molesting him in 1995 when he was a junior and Newman was principal of Archbishop Ryan High School. The pair would meet in his office, where Newman would use drugs. Prosecutors were disappointed they couldn't charge other priests due to time limits under existing Pennsylvania law. Newman is believed to have molested three or four other students who have yet to come forward. Source: The News Journal, 5/23/09

Just to name a few... Ye Shall Know Them...

i never considered myself as deacon the equivalent of the minister in any way. we were his go to girls and guys, cabinet officers as it were, of the church. i never considered myself capable of, or endowed with, any ministerial powers, up to and including confidential counciling.

Look at all the fun you missed. You could have been hearing everyone's deepest secrets all the while telling them it was confidential counciling.

I hear you. If there was ever a group of people that knows how to gossip it would certainly be a church congregation.

Cheney can still save his ass by claiming to be a minister.

self ordained.

If you are or have ever been a minister, you cannot run for public office.

There, I said it.

lawyer?

But just because someones religion or religious belief or form of participation should not exclude them from holding office.

Until it interferes with their obligations as a public servant.
And in this case, it certainly does interfere with his oath as a senator.

Huckabee is an ordained Southern Baptist minister which held public office.

You are misapplying Separation of Church and State which has nothing to do with a person's elgibility to run for public office.

Sorry Mudshark. This is in response to the Separation of Church and State comment above

I happen to think that being a clergyperson should not hold office. But I have to stop myself. Because that's discrimination.
So, I have to accept it. And I do. But when they do hold office, and they violate the rules and laws of the Senate or any other public office, they need to be censured. And if they keep doing it, fired.

..W committed how many war crimes? How's that trial goin'?

Are the ones always prattling on about "Liberal elitists" yet here we have a prime example of what true elitism really looks like.
They are the select few who, saturated with corrupting power believe they only answer to God and to Hell with their constituents and the media and anyone else that questions their beliefs..I don't think you can get anymore anti-democratic or arrogant than that.

Aw come on!!! He's an OB-GYN! What on earth could he have been counseling Ensign about as a doctor???

had better go back and read his own book, which was about how Washington corrupts 'outsiders' (what he was when he first arrived fresh from Okie-ville) and turns them into 'insiders.' (I've not read it) I guess he figured it wasn't such a bad thing when he ran again in 2004??!

Seems like he got the full treatment - he's not just a "recurring" Senator, but now he's 'inside' Creepy-Street and all the dirty little secrets he gets to share with his prurient pals.

Is you don't talk about C street.

I'm not sure I want to know what they were doing that he claims was medical.
Sounds like he is one of those OB-GYN's who Bush said was unable to practice his love with women across America.
The stupid runs deep with these people.

I believe you'll find, fellow Representative Ron Paul operated as an "OB-GYN" as well. A coincidence, perhaps so?

As the "Libertarian standard bearer", Paul gained supporters who agreed with his positions on gun rights, fiscal conservatism, homeschooling, and abortion, and won approval from many who thought the federal government was misdirected.

Paul considered running for President in 1992, but instead chose to support Pat Buchanan that year, and served as an advisor to his Republican presidential campaign against incumbent President George H. W. Bush.

54% of his constituency agreed with his goal of eliminating the U.S. Department of Education.

In accord with his political positions, he has also introduced the Sanctity of Life Act
