John McCain doesn't understand "attack" ads
John McCain complained Wednesday night that Barack Obama's mean health care "attack ads" hurt his feelings and interrupted his Sunday football viewing.
MCCAIN: "Every other ad -- ever other ad was an attack ad on my health care plan. And any objective observer has said it's not true. You're running ads right now that say that I oppose federal funding for stem cell research. I don't."
Here is the ad in question:
What John McCain fails to recognize is that contrast ads based on policy are fair game, especially, as in this case, it has the benefit of being true. If McCain wants to see a real attack ad, he need not look any further than his own YouTube page:
Or this one:
Look, politics is a rough sport. But there is a clear distinction to be made between the types of ads Obama is running (McCain will tax your health care) and the ones McCain is running (Obama pals around with terrorists, he's risky, he's dangerous.)
Obama goes after policy. McCain goes after character. Like the Senator said last night: The attacks say more about McCain's campaign than they do him.
Oh yea, and Obama was right about McCain's completely negative campaign:
So what do we learn? That the McCain campaign is running 100 percent negative ads right now. We learn that despite Obama's massive advantage on the air, McCain has still run more purely negative ads, and when factoring "hybrid" ads, they are running even.

A victim I tell you! Poor thing is on tv now complaining about being smeared, while still lying about Obama's policies.
I need to add that doesn't everyone feel attacked when they are LOSING?
Dead man walking.
y'all heard about http://Www.FilthyRichmond.coM
How mean can Obama get? Telling the truth about Republicans is mean and unfair.
It's sooo hard to debunk the truth.
He understands. He just likes to lie like most of the Rethugs!
Obama's adds attack McCain on policy,
McCain's adds attack Obama in a character-assassination fashion
One person's policy attack ad is another person's character assassination. Again, it takes an evolved maturity to see the difference between the two. Another thing--did anybody see a stem cell research reference in that ad? I didn't.
and McSame is lying like he always does... no stand on stem cell research by gramps... just more pointing the finger and whining like a big suck!
Well, here's what I don't understand. Why does McCain always have his wife or as today, his wife, his mother and Lieberman standing on the stage with him when he gives a speech at his rallies? I cannot recall seeing him up on the stage alone since this long damned campaign began. He always has to be accompanied by someone. Why? Obama speaks alone without minders. His wife isn't standing there behind him at all his speeches. He appears to be an adult while McCain seems to need caretakers.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
McCain sickens me. He knows he's gonna lose, so all he can do now is hope to incite race riots and guarantee that Obama will never be able to go anywhere without his own personal Popemobile.
Let's not forget that First Debate: McCain Guilty of Premature Attack-Elation
http://satiricalpolitical.com/?p=3508
Down here in Florida where we are in the eye of the campaign hurricane, I cannot recall seeing one positive ad from McCain. Most of what we see are dark grainy ads telling us how afraid we should be of Obama. Obama on the other hand has several very positive ads about himself and his plans for the country.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
During the entire presidental cycle not one ad convinced me that McCain had an inkling of a plan of what he was going to do once in office or how mavericky he would be to Bush. This tin-plated phony has done nothing but finger-point and thrown sludge. This old man must have really thought the fix was in for him like in the Republican primary.
I wanted to comment on a slightly different topic, so I apologize for this being slightly out of context.
As a British expatriate and someone who has lived in the U.S. now for 30 years, I am so proud that it is very likely that Obama will be the next President - from an international perspective. I believe the rest of the world will see the U.S. more favorably as it will have demonstrated progress. The U.S. will present much more integrity, intellect and jingoism-free dialogue with leaders of other nations.
However, I heard something at work today that sent shivers up my spine. A co-worker, who campaigns for Obama here in So. California (specifically Orange County and San Diego) told me of the death-threats to Obama that bombard the campaign daily. She has even received many threats while out campaigning. She also told me that Obama's security detail is 3 times the normal levels. Now, all of this is not commented on much in the media so as not to politicize the matter, but if we have barbaric ignorance in a supposedly educated corner of America, what does that say about the survival chances of progress for this country.
I am concerned, but an steadfast Obama supporter.
thank you for your comment. I think the reason it is not commented on is because it has been stated before that many have hesitated to express early support (emphasis on the word early) out of this concern. Your comment tells me Obama knows the risks and has taken appropriate measures in order to assume those risks. That said, I am not surprised but instead relieved to read your remark. Many of us know that ######### alive and well. Many of us know that even if Obama were white, he would be running a great risk because he is challenging the status quo (yes, not as much as what progressives would like, but he is not a member of the established ruling elite.)
If anything were to happen, I would vote for Obama/Biden anyway. The alternative is far too dangerous and reckless. I'm grateful to Senator Obama for assuming this risk. He truly is putting country first.
As I understand it, Obama's security was strengthened the moment he became a candidate. It is widely recognized that Obama's candidacy is historic as well as the blatant and unfortunate fact that race is still a problem in America. While I won't stereotype all Southerners, there are some out there who still have not gotten over the Civil War.
3 men were apprehended who were conspiring to assassinate Obama at the DNC and we have heard of the racist and threatening remarks at McCain (KKKlan) rallies. These are truly the bad apples, the low information voters, the racists who cannot move on.
As with all things, people who refuse to progress are often left behind.
When discouraged, read the astonishing support that Obama receives from Conservatives such as Kathleen Parker, Christopher Buckley, Christopher Hitchens, David Brooks and George Will. Or, simply listen to Obama's life story at http://www.barackobama.com/tv/ or to his acceptance speech. The Washington Post endorsed Obama today in a most eloquent way http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/...
I guess I have a more optimistic view. I never thought I would see an authentic African-American Presidential Candidate in my lifetime. It makes me proudly tear up when I realize how many whites votes for Obama. He wouldn't be here if America had not progressed this much, regardless of his obvious intellect and talent.
Thank you for the encouragement.
I agree, it is a truly historic moment. I think 2009 is a major cross-roads for America and the world. When we make the correct turn (elect Obama) and set off in that direction, it will move us forward socially and will definitely open up a new era in global history. Think about it. From a socio-political standpoint, this has the possibility of being a more dramatic shift than the fall of the Soviet Union - an empire that lasted 74 years compared to the 300+ year enforced and, later, unspoken class stratification in the west.
Indeed!
GObama!
McCain proved Obama's point! He's so out of touch he doesn't even get the difference between issue ads and Rovian attack ads.
Is Obama an aikido master? He seemed to let McCain self-destruct; in the third debate especially.
Dallas, I think you're on to something here. Maybe you've heard this story again--it deserves another look.
Was when he trash talked about the Arizona Cardinals beating the Cowboys the previous week. He's already got the Arizona vote so he certainly didn't gain anything, but I'll bet he pissed off some Dallas fans and lost a few votes there and among their fans across the country.
A couple months ago McKeating was two points behind in AZ. There are a lot of people in AZ who are very unhappy with the old boy.
His habit of stabbing common soldiers in the back is having it's effect.
I haven't seen any AZ specific polls lately, but it ain't over in the Grand Canyon State.
Here is the ad in question:
i don't think so... nothing about stem cells anyway...
I think the stem cell ad is the radio ad below, not a video ad. I though Obama did another one, actually, but I can't find it. Not that the ad lies, but atleast it actually mentions stem cells, which the video one does not.

McCain is a very experienced politician who knows the difference-- he's engaged in a desperate defense of the grotesque travesty his campaign has become. We should not do him the courtesy of assuming he's innocently confused. He's deliberately trying to deceive people, deliberately trying to frighten the public about Obama, deliberately spreading confusion about what an 'attack ad' is. His behavior is, in every applicable sense of the word, utterly dishonorable, and dishonorable is as dishonorable does. Those who continue to deny this while clearly understanding what his campaign had become are deceiving themselves.
Last night on David Letterman's show McCain educated us all. He said he was friends with G Gordon Liddy of Watergate but it was different then Obama meeting Ayres at the age of 8 years old. He said he could be friends with Liddy because he had paid his debt for the History makig crime he did to America. Now John explained the Alaska is the largest State in the US. Sarah Palin's qualifications for the VP spot were based on her experience as a PTA mom, City Council member, Mayor of 3,800 people and then becoming Govenor in 2007. John said Sarah was in his eyes and judgement the best choice among all the candidates he viewed. John down played Joe the Plummer since we know his background and is now picking up a new Plummer to get headlines. John did say he messed up when lying to Letterman about rushing to save the US Economy for the American people.
I'm sure Americans will be glad to see the people John hangs around with as they do know how to run the White House with their experence in the Watergate Scandal that brought down the US and a President. Who knows maybe G Gordon Liddy or his son will be in the McCain/Palin Cabinet. If Ted Stevens is found guilty he will be pardoned by Bush and then get a job in the McCain/Palin Cabinet. Dick Cheney could be Secretary of State and Tom DeLay could be US Treasury Secretary as Ken Lay can come out of hiding.
McCain's condescending attitude and his mini tantrums heavily seasoned with a flagrant personal entitlement, are as amazing as they are transparent. He's conversing in a vacuum. There's a horrid republican congresswoman from New Mexico (name escapes me) who displays the same dismissive, haughty, arrogant attitude when she's rolled out onto the circus sideshow known as cable TV. It's no longer news to anyone but it never ceases to amaze me.
Heather Wilson?
Yep. Very comfortable with the lying part of her job description.
John McCain doesn't understand Denny's menues.

McCain is just desperately flailing. He's to the point where he will say or claim anything to get some air time and some attention.
If it comes to pass, as has been suggested, that Colin Powell will endorse Obama, Sunday morning on Meet the Press. That will make McCain's desperation even more advanced.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
How on earth is criticizing his health care policy even remotely like an attack?
McCain sees any ad that doesn't mention that he was a war hero and a POW as an attack ad.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
The number is Nine Waah waah!
I think mccain stuck his foot in his mouth on this one. Right after he says this line, he asks why don't we stick to the issues. And as far as I can tell, this IS obama sticking to the issues. I have no problem with candidates being negative in regards to taxes, the economy, etc. It's the other BS that's not good.
He thinks he's a "victim"?
How many EXTRAVIGANT PARTYS did the (ex)middle class have right after the bailouts?
Did McCain loose his home(s)? Any one of them? Maybe even one of his cars??
Did he ever have to pay one stinkin dime for any of his multiple life threating cancer treatments or anything medical? How many friends or relatives did he ever watch slowly die, due directly to the lack of health coverage?
All of these asswipes, who ruined this country, get FULLY PAID FOR MEDICAL COVERAGES for things like ""repeated"" SEVERE SUBSTANCE ABUSE. It is a PATTERN and a FACT.
WHOSE THE "VICTIM" HERE?
1. The best part of McCain's statement was that he lead into this by saying that he was trying to relax and watch a good game of football and all he saw were these attack ads, (which were really ads calling him out and reminding him of how he has flip-flopped or sold his soul in order to become president. I wonder if he saw some of his own ads against Obama and got confused. Seriously.
2. McCain better not let his support of stem cell research leak to his base or his stellar running mate. They'll be yelling for his head at the next Klan rally er McCain rally.
I haven't seen any reaction to McCain's dismissive "cockamamie idea" crack about Biden and the partition of Iraq into three separate nations - maybe Kurdistan, Shiastan and Sunnistan. Biden isn't the only person with expertise on Iraq who has made this suggestion. Read Peter Galbraith. This cockamamie idea may in fact be the first sensible idea we've heard since Bush, Cheney and Powell lied to us this disaster.
I prefer Laurelstan.

Now Barack's campaign slips up again...tells the truth...

Why are none of your commentators talking about the fact that in these tough economic times Obama is spending millions on these 30 minute network OBAMA Infommercials and other Ads when people are suffering. It seems way out of touch with the real world. If it were McCain I feel it would be on everything 24/7.
Scarlet (not verified):
Of course. It would be much better for the candidate who seeks to help the country not to spend the money needed to win the election that would enable him to do so. Better he not use the funding people have given him to become the president, and instead, just donate a few million to charity. That makes perfect sense.
Exactly. Then McCain could have the news spend millions talking on tv about how Obama is improperly spending millions talking on tv. Perfect.

What an ignorant comment. The way to help get out of this mess is by electing Barack Obama instead of keeping the same policies which have failed our country. You can't win an election by not running ads.
Do you have a problem with all the money the McCain campaign, Republican Party, and Republican 527 groups are running in a time of crisis??? Do you complain that McCain is busy running personal attack ads in a time of economic crisis? Should we really focus on Bill Ayers in a time of crisis? Should McCain really be appearing on Letterman talking about Bill Ayers at a time of economic crisis?
That 30 minute spot is to explain Obama's economic plan. This is exactly what Ross Perot did when he ran for President. He bought a 30 minute national spot, and explained his ideas for boosting the economy. It was right when Perot did it, and it's right now.
He doesn't understand the difference between pointing out what's wrong with his policies and smearing Obama as someone who pals around with terrorists. They're both just negative attacks to him.
He doesn't understand how Obama's health care plan would work, and I'm not entirely sure he understands how his own would work.
What he should understand, but does not, could fill libraries.
In fact, he doesn't understand basic percentages. Did anyone catch this in the debate?:
Really, John? Fifty? :)
Everyone is equally entitled to the pursuit of happiness. Wasn't that once self evident?
I watched the Terrorist clip. To think that there are people out there buying this crap! Is this for real?! And then he has the audacity to complain that he is being treated unfair. What a load of crock.
McCain needs a lesson on ethics/character/respect, etc.
He has no backbone or spine. He's a worm, no less than a worm for saying one thing and doing another. And using the excuse "if only Obama would have sat down with me..." bull crap.
Why do people buy this crap? Are there enough intelligent people in this country? Or has Bush done so much damage that he's made everyone up to have the intelligence of a 2 year old?
mccane is notz a victemz! he iz a crook! hes a french fri. look up mccain french fri! :D wird rightz?
He practices nefarious judgment like any other greasy politician.
Obama is the only one left actually fighting FOR THE PEOPLE!
Here's what I think about the latest whining from Campbell Brown about spending too much money on ads, instead of going to people who need the money:
Yah, yah, yah... when people see lots of $$, they start to gush...
Here's the problem..
We've got a tremendous debt to pay for our misguided policies of the past, and Bush put us in a hole.
We have half of the nations' workforce out of work, and losing their homes, in debt, and can't afford their monthly payments.
We have people selling crack on the side in order to make a living, and the crime rate is sky rocketing because of our inherent need to survive.
When we give small dollar donations to candidates to run for US, because we see our greatest values represented in them... we expect them to win.
Now, once this election is over with, then we may see that money come back to us, for having invested in the candidate, or we may not. But what we would like to see, is our money not go to waste. If attack ads cost a lot of money, and they will help my candidate get elected, then so be it - I rendered my money over to them with no guilty conscience whatsoever, knowing full well that that is what it may end up doing.
So do I care where my money goes after they get it? - not really... I just want to see them get elected.
A small dollar donation, does not require a contract.
However, it would be nice to see Mccain relax a bit with the negative attack ads, and finally act like a leader he claims to be... that way Barack could also settle down.
In the end... don't let envy and greed control your fears about what is or isn't being done with someone else's money... it's not yours to fuss over.
Maybe that's why his don't work.

By definition, an attack ad is any ad in which you mention or refer to your opponent.
I am not a politician nor in favor of any candidate. My question is that the economy was doing great until 2 years ago before the last change in congress and senate . I am not blaming that that is the reason for this melt down which is caused by stupidity of individuals who know that they can not repay any loans let alone a mortgage.
Now is it fair to blame it on Bush or McCain? What is the solution for this mess ? who has that solution ? Who is good for jobs ?? only time will tell.
If any one like to know how long it will take to find a job with your skills check out my page.www.crootpad.com/JobsearchTime
You little fuk tards should stick to huggin trees and being fags. Useless freaks
In several interviews John McCain has said that he has never been able to forgive a fellow prisoner of war for lying on tape for the North Vietnamese in exchange for better treatment. Yet nearly 40 years later McCain is willing to place lies before the camera in exchange for votes.
McCain responds to what the Vietnamese might call “fire in the lake” with paranoia-mongering and rewritten history. How could McCain be so resolute then, yet so dissolute now?
