New poll shows Bush is back!

...back all the way up to a whopping 34% approval rating. It's gotta suck to know that 2/3 of the country absolutely despises you and just wants you to leave already.

Gallup:

A new USA Today/Gallup poll, conducted Jan. 9-11, finds 34% of Americans approving of the overall job George W. Bush is doing as president and 61% disapproving. Those ratings are a shade better than what Bush has received for most of the past year, and may represent the kind of lame-duck approval bounce Gallup has seen for other presidents.

Pathetic. President-elect Obama, on the other hand, is starting off pretty strongly. Let's hope he can keep it up.

...that poll was described as "A dead cat's bounce."

Bob Roberts's picture

taken from investment banking. When a stock falls through the floor, there's often a "dead cat bounce" because some investors buy in because they can't resist the deal now that the share price is so low (among other reasons).

My guess is there's an MoE of +/- 3--6 pts, so he's probably on the lower scale.

On July 1, 2002, the International Criminal Court, a treaty-based court located in The Hague, came into being for the prosecution of war crimes committed on or after that date. However, several nations, most notably the United States, China, and Israel, have criticized the court and refuse to participate in it or to permit the court to have jurisdiction over their citizens. Note, however, that a citizen of one of the 'objector nations' could still find himself before the Court if he were accused of committing war crimes in a country that was a state party, regardless of the fact that their country of origin was not a signatory.

War crimes are defined in the statute that established the International Criminal Court, which includes:

Grave breaches of the Geneva Conventions, such as:

Willful killing, or causing great suffering or serious injury to body or health
Torture or inhumane treatment
Unlawful wanton destruction or appropriation of property
Forcing a prisoner of war to serve in the forces of a hostile power
Depriving a prisoner of war of a fair trial
Unlawful deportation, confinement or transfer
Taking hostages

The following acts as part of an international conflict:

Directing attacks against civilians
Directing attacks against humanitarian workers or UN peacekeepers
Killing a surrendered combatant
Misusing a flag of truce
Settlement of occupied territory
Deportation of inhabitants of occupied territory
Using poison weapons
Using civilians as shields
Using child soldiers

The following acts as part of a non-international conflict:

Murder, cruel or degrading treatment and torture
Directing attacks against civilians, humanitarian workers or UN peacekeepers
Taking hostages
Summary execution
Pillage
Rape, sexual slavery, forced prostitution or forced pregnancy

However the court only has jurisdiction over these crimes where they are "part of a plan or policy or as part of a large-scale commission of such crimes"[6]

To any citizen in Iraq . . . Take your pick.

He's been shown next to Obama, perceived as 'helping in the transition'. Undeserved, of course. Approval by association.

joeedugan's picture

I agree. I think people are beginning to feel good about their government again, even if that government isn't quite in office yet, and Bush is basking in that glow. Plus he's not doing anything these last few weeks, which is good, because if he does something, it tends to be something AWFUL and thus makes his numbers drop.
After he is gone there will be so many people coming forward and so many bad things coming out that his personal approval polls will go right back down, perhaps even farther than they were.

ricky's picture

It is going up because he is widely perceived that he is not doing ANYTHING, hence approval.

And now we know why he has been making the rounds on TV! He's trying to get his ratings up for his exit stats.

Again I say, Fuck You George Bush! And good riddens!

How in the name of all things normal, can this idiot get any more than 3.4%? The complete global economy is in meltdown mode partially because of this idiot. Iraq was/is a craphole of murder and mayhem. Not one thing did this administration touch, that didn't turn into gold for the rich, and shit for the poor. And he has a 34% approval rating? Good Gawd, what would it take to open up American eyes?

Kathy in St. Louis's picture

I don't believe this poll for a minute. People just want to forget him. Reminds me of when my aunt died and my mother (her sister-in-law) said she wasn't really that bad of a person. She was awful. Just because a person is gone doesn't mean they are now good folk. Bush is not gone, but people try to be charitable.

In my opinion some of those who were polled gave him a sympathy vote, sort of like a sympathy fu*k. They felt sorry for him or something.

Anyone gonna watch his farewell speech tonight? I understand he's going to have some people up on the stage with him or something. I hope we never hear another word from him after tonight. And I hope once that helicopter takes off Tuesday, we never see him again.

Look how much effort has gone into creating a legacy for him.

Had the white house spent 8 years of showing the same degree of dedication toward working for America as they have over the last 2 months to resurrect a sense of respectability for bush, he would have gone down in history as....mediocre.

That's a hell of an up-tick from where he's at now.

Peter G's picture

Do I approve or disapprove of the way George is handling his job as president? Compared to what? He hasn't done squat for the last six months and yet this is such a dramatic improvement over the previous seven and a half years that I would have to agree he is doing a better job.

Hasa Diga Eebowai

He didn't bomb Iran so I guess that is a plus. He didn't come up with some excuse to halt the presidential elections, so I guess that's a plus. And as Peter G said, in bush's case doing nothing for six months is also a plus.

NO ONE, I mean NO ONE, that I know thinks he was a good President. I do not believe that poll, as everyone I know is affected by this economy. Trillions of peoples dollars have been lost and a poll shows that Bush approval rate went up? How much did they pay these people to take the poll? Obviously, the figures are tweaked. Bush is afraid he will be going down as the worst President in History and he will do anyting to tweak the numbers.

I am sticking with the last poll that showed Bush approval rating was 18. That sounds even too high.

pissed off patricia's picture

I wonder what bush's approval rating was the Friday before he took office for the first time.

I seem to remember that before 9-11 people were not so happy with him and it seems like his approval was like in the mid 40s or so.

Given that Bush has a core base of supporters that would stand behind him no matter what fresh horror, its conceivable that a small per centage of people bought into the mantle of tepid retrospection he pretended to donn the other day.In addition let's not forget the fake indignation and insufferable sanctimony he indulged himself in,which always plays well with the rubes.

It is indeed sad testimony to the ignorance and or lack of intelligence and character that so many Republicans are still irrationally willing to fantasize that Bush has done anything deserving of acceptance let alone worthy of approval.
