New unemployment claims hit 26-year high
By SilentPatriot Thursday Dec 11, 2008 2:32pm
Just another aspect of Bush's legacy manifesting itself.
ABC:
New claims for jobless benefits rose more than expected last week, exceeding even gloomy expectations for an economy stuck in a recession that seems to be deepening. The Labor Department reported Thursday that initial applications for jobless benefits in the week ending Dec. 6 rose to a seasonally adjusted 573,000 from an upwardly revised figure of 515,000 in the previous week. That was far more than the 525,000 claims Wall Street economists expected.
Seriously: How does this man sleep at night knowing that, ultimately, he needs to take responsibility for the state of the American economy? Not to mention all the other things he's royally screwed up?

Bush probably sleeps just fine. After all...in his little pointed head, it's all Clinton's fault.
It's no wonder few people will miss this President.
http://theprogressivepost.blogspot.com/2008/1...
It's because the NRA's for him
And they never miss.
This was his goal all along. No problemo. Mission accomplished.
Sociopaths never sleep.
You hit it right on the head. He doesn't need a reality check, he needs institutionalization.
He's spending all his time now trying to rip the endangered species act all to hell. No time to worry about unemployment.
I was pretty high when I was 26 too.
pickles must spend many a sleepless night wondering how prince georgie could be screwing everything up but her.
when they say they aren't going to miss him.
This is really getting from bad to worse, with each passing day that the dumb urchin is still in the WH. Let's only hope that a large number of the people who are suffering right now are the ones who actually voted for this nightmare...TWICE! Maybe this will jar them back into reality.
of the unemployed and I never voted for turdboy. Unfortunately, it cuts across all demographics. TYPICAL. REPUBLICAN. ECONOMY.
By the way, are we FUBAR yet?
Hopefully not, but you can see it from here.
Yes, our handbasket has reached its destination.
Please remain seated until the handbasket comes to a complete stop.
..who will have to suffer again this 'holiday season', after needing to experience so much suffering-- all year long for far too long.
I worded this message very badly, but it's hard to write when one has tears in their eyes. Please forgive
Bush's failed leadership and discredited Republican policies certainly did not help the situation, but it is intellectual laziness to claim that all of this can be blamed on one man.
A lot is wrong with America, and it extends FAR beyond anything Bush ever laid his hands on, figuratively speaking.
Many things need to be scrutinized including but not limited to: the entire banking system and the legislation that governs it, corporate law, the ethics (or lack thereof) of the military-industrial complex, the influence of religion on state, the electoral system, and last but not least your own behaviour.
WOW. Happy Holidays.

Seriously, John, isn't it time to get over your naive presumption that Bush's screwups aren't intentional?
From 9-11 to Iraq to Katrina to the current economic & financial meltdowns -- and all the other "screwups" in between -- they've all benefitted the Global Investor Class and screwed the ordinary people.
How can you continue to believe these are "mistakes" ?
..no mistake.

see my comment up top with same time stamp. great minds! I think I owe you a coke or something.
yeps, right on the money.
he was supposed to screw it up, he was supposed to get us into crippling wars.
he was supposed to turn over NORAD calls to Cheney.
its time to consider that these are predators - and very competent ones at that.
I disagree. It's been Pres. CHENEY all along.
/Dubya is a figurehead.
That should be Silent Patriot, not John Amato.
I'd edit the original post but the edit button is gone.
I think.
...At one point in history, we were but a single pretzel bite away from being spared the horror of his failed presidency.
I like to think the Secret Service agent who rushed in and gave this moron the Heimlich that day wishes he had taken a stroll in the Rose Garden instead, and just waited for the screech of pickles' scream.
But then we would have been stuck with Preznut Cheney.
Oh well....better the devil you know.
funny how the Secret Service hyper-reacts to a pretzel threat to the President,
but hijacked airplanes running around the Eastern seaboard slamming into wired buildings?
nah, not so much...
how come?
I recall a few years back it was pointed out that between the two of them, Bush 41 & 43, they would have a net jobs loss between their two administration. Bush 43 recovered during the last few years, but it seems job losses are accelerating and we may be back to net losses again. Man, they suck!
speaking of weird numbers...
on Sept 11th, 1991, Bush Sr gave his infamous New World Order speech.
Pentagon began construction on Sept 11, 1941.
its not a coincidence.
really... you think Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda are such sticklers for numerological details?
is, oh, about 572,990 more than bush can count.
nyuk, nyuk, nyuk
but seriously, i agree with some of the above: this is not completely unintentional. it is a game of chicken between the people and the ruling class. gobs and scads of unemployed/underemployed people might be willing to work for less, be willing to sacrifice benefits, be willing to give up some rights in order to hold on to their job. but, this goes to far and there will be a huge backlash against the owners of production.
Bush knows he will never be held responsible, so he probably sleeps well and dreams of clearing brush, golfing, and writing his memoirs...
This scum of the earth has no conscience. He has run this country into the ditch BIG TIME, and he doesn't see it nor believe it had anything to do with his corrupt and inept "decider-ing".
Such a pathetic, disgraceful bastard.
...and some of them never accept responsibility (no matter what evidence is present) for their actions....our shitty President is no different...just way, way worse.
And they have "successful people" like GW Bush as their examples.
Why shouldn't they emulate them?
Yes, I've heard some of these kids(and some parents...yeah) use Bush as an excuse.
I used to teach college kids, and something must have happened in the mid 80s.
Because the level of ability to accept any responsibility dropped to single figures by the time I was teaching people born after 84.
Heck, I had people blaming me for them failing the class. These were people who had shown exactly 4 times to class (1st day, 1 midterm, and maybe a section here and there plus the final) had done 0 work, yet I was at fault because... and I am paraphrasing here "I didn't force them enough to work."
My jar dropped to the floor so many times the last year I taught, that I though I needed reconstructive surgery.
Bush in this sense, may have been a luminary. A few years ahead in the "I will blame everything else but me, so I am sleeping great at night, because at the end of the day... I am truly the victim here." I am sure he will blame his dad, if he ever gets to seat in a prosecution stand (not that it will ever happen).
..but I think we (all of us) sold our souls back in the '80s when "me first" became acceptable. I can't remember what we gained in the bargain now but this dish has been a long time in the making and we're going to eat it whether we want to or not.
they had some sort of divine right to never having to make a compromise.
And I think this comes from way before the 80s. Carter for example, tried to deal with the American populace like adults, telling them the grim situation after the excesses of the Vietnam war, the Nixon maladministration, and the oil crisis. And like spoiled kids, Americans turned to uncle ronnie who let us stay late and eat all candy we wanted.
If anything, I am not that worried about the looming depression. I think it is nature's way of teaching us a lesson.
figures unless you're one of them.
It's going to get a hell of a lot worse.
And it's not a repub problem.
It's everyone's problem.
This is going to get worse, maybe a lot worse. Scrutinize your lifestyles closely, people.
hasn't rang in over a month, and thus the layoff of almost all our workers including myself. This hasn't happened like this in a decade. I've never been layed off before Christmas and we were always given the option of working in the winter. This year, no option. There is no work. Construction has halted in my area almost completely.
In 2007 I moved to Tx. 2 blocks over there was now houses going up. i counted about 14 houses. It looked like they were All started about the same time. I went down the street where all the new houses are and they all look as if they ran out of money. there all fraimed, some with windows, mostley just fraimed. No heater or weireing. I look in one of the things that have the info on them and they are ALL the same. "FIRE SALE" they have not worked on them in the last 8 to 10 months. You can buy them as is for $165,000 or have them finshed for $375,000. Have not seen any of them sell. And I don't think this shit is over by any means.
Interestingly, the excuse for the Wallstreet bailout was to thaw the credit markets.
The problem is that the bankers created a huge hole with derivatives. And they are acting as if that was real, and they are willing to throw us down the well with them if they can't recoup any of that fake money.
There are no words to describe the level of psychosys of the banking class. We need a government to put its foot down and normalize the situation, not try to patch a non existent wealth that just banished.
The sad thing, is that even thought this is marketed as a "complex problem" it really has a very simple solution.
And yes, this is part of the government duties, to regulate and deal with clean ups. What we are doing, is expecting the foxes to regulate themselves if we keep on giving them free poultry.
My brother, mother, brother in-law, one of my sisters, and myself have all lost our jobs within the last 6 weeks. Check this out, I put it up the other day in the comments also. Year

I would say that our track record is a lot better than theirs.
When you put it like that it doesn't look that way, but why would you judge a presidents numbers in the first year of their admin? Move that Dem to 2000 instead of '93 and that Rep from 2001 to now, which is about 7%. Now you see the end result of an administrations policies. Now do that for the entire list and tell me Dems track record is the same...
the numbers over the years, you can see that during Democratic presidencies the numbers go down every year with the exception of Jimmy Carter's last year. Now, with Republicans, it goes up every year. The numbers for Reagan's years in office are really high, yet he is considered by most Republicans to be the greatest president ever.
A far as judging presidents numbers in their first year, I just figured that most people would exclude those on their own.
the methodologies used to document "joblessness" and "unemployment" were modified by Clinton, and retained by Bush. if you've been out of work for over a year and no longer qualify for unemployment... technically you're not measured as "unemployed".
so is this the worst its been in 26 years? or the worst its been in 52 years?
was to multiply the figure by 2 (at least).
Also, the way inflation is calculated in the US of A is rather interesting. Things like gas, housing, or food, for example are not used in the index. So if you are a person who does not have to eat, have a roof over your head, or displace yourself from your house, the index represents you.
And what I find fantastic is that people look at the inflation index, which is traditionally low. And don't start to wonder why even with 2 paychecks, making more money (in figures) than the previous generation, we still can barely make ends meet. Whereas 1 generation ago, a single middle class paycheck was enough to sustain a family of 4 at least.
No wonder we are in such shithole, with accounting practices like this...
Hey didn’t our last stimulus come from our own pockets? As in, borrowed from next year’s tax return?
Has anyone remembered that little tid-bit?
It wasn't and it's not so there is nothing to remember.
How does he sleep at night? Half a bottle of Jack Daniels most likely.
A good shot of only the very finest tranqs from his big pharma buddies.
and leads a Christian country founded by Christians based on Christian principles. Why doesn't he immediately call a special meeting of the Christian leaders and have them pray the country back to prosperity? Christ, what's the point of having a nation under God if you never take advantage of it?
yippee for the first time in my life i dont have to lose a god damned thing i have because a rat bastard repig fucked up the economy , lets hear it for meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
I see that that asshole form IL. got the unemployment extenshion cut from 13 weeks to just 7 weeks. Thats great, now people can run out just befor Chritmass. What a guy. I wonder how much he is going to pay HIS servants in HIS 2.1 Million Dollar house in TX.
Let me see, the CEO's from the big 3 auto makers have been bagged on for the last 2 weeks for fucking up at there jobs and lost billions of dollars.
bush took office with America with money in the BANK! 8 years we have a 9 trillion dollar hole we are in. Now if the CEO's from the big 3 are getting 1 dollar for pay, should bush only get $1 for his retirement untill America is back in the good. What a 2 faced asshole.
Jobloss is falling off the table and not just here.
Trickling Down Worldwide
And I can't claim unemployment because Iowa State Law requires that a worker must work within the state for 18 months prior to collecting.
Where's that idiot that said her husband did a great job as President? Where is that moron who was singing his praises on TV? Oh yeah, she's in her warm house away from the "little people".
Fuck that whole family.
THese numbers include 7 of my idiot in-laws. And yes, 6 of them voted for McCain! Sigh.....
It's funny how a few years ago, many people had at least 2-3 jobs, and now most people are un(der)employed with 0-1 job.
