And You Thought We Left The Monarchy In England? Liz Cheney's Thinking of Running for Office
You may have been under the impression that we don't have a monarchy in this country, but apparently we do - especially if you're part of the Cheney gene pool:
Liz Cheney, a mother of five children, has become one of the sharpest and most outspoken critics of the new White House and has needled the Obama administration for failing to protect the nation against terrorism, and mollycoddling terror suspects while pursuing government lawyers who approved water-boarding, a method of inquisition she approves of. She called the president's Nobel Peace prize a "farce".
Pushed by friends and family, Ms Cheney is now reportedly contemplating a run for office herself either in Virginia, where she was raised, or in Wyoming, her parents' home state.
A former senior state department official on the Middle East, the 43-year-old has already attracted favourable comparisons with as a more substantive version of Sarah Palin, another conservative working mother.
"She's likely to seek office," was the judgment of Karl Rove, the former chief adviser to George W Bush.
"I'd love to see her run for office someday," said her father, 69, recently. "I think she's got a lot to offer, and it's been a great career for me, and if she has the interest, and I think she does, then I would like to see her embark upon a career in politics."
In 40 television appearances in the past year, Ms Cheney has robustly defended her father against criticism that he was the sinister force behind war on terror policies that subverted the norms of American justice, arguing that he and Mr Bush did nothing illegal and kept the country safe after 9/11.
Imagine that. She's been on TV forty times in the past year, for nothing more than her DNA and social connections. Yes, Marcy Wheeler calls her "Babydick" and points us to a piece in New York magazine about why NBC loves her so much:
Fox is a regular pulpit, of course, but Liz is also all over NBC, where she happens to be social friends with Meet the Press host David Gregory (whose wife worked with Liz ’s husband at the law firm Latham & Watkins), family friends with Justice Department reporter Pete Williams (Dick Cheney’s press aide when he was secretary of Defense), and neighborhood friends with Morning Joe co-host Mika Brzezinski, daughter of Carter-administration national-security adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski. When Mika criticized Dick Cheney on her show last year, the former vice-president sent her a box of chocolate cupcakes.
Lawrence O’Donnell, an MSNBC pundit who engaged in a particularly testy shouting match on Good Morning America with Liz Cheney over waterboarding, says the networks have allowed her a high degree of control over her appearances. “She had up to that point been completely accustomed to having interviews go her way and ceded on her terms,” he observes. “She has been careful to make sure that the interviews worked that way.”
Marcy also reminds us that Cheney was her father's eyes and ears in the State Department:
What Hagan describes here, of course, is out and out insubordination (or rather, BabyDick’s insubordination layered on top of Bolton’s insubordination). But what he also makes clear is that not only was BabyDick wired into Bolton’s shop (and with it, discussions that would have revealed the genesis of Joe Wilson’s trip), but she also helped Wurmser accomplish his two-fold goal of thwarting State Department efforts to set up a broad-based Iraqi government (where OVP pressed Chalabi instead) and of setting up propaganda efforts–complete with their very own NYT shill, Judy Miller–to support claims they had found WMDs.
Not that that should be a surprise. But if you’re looking for news in this big [BJ] of an article, that’s one tidbit of it.

....the fools do not realize,a population that can ,..... not paticipate .............in the 'economy'...,can not keep it viable!..........."we are listening,.......and we're not blind.,......this is your life....this is your time."
If she thinks she can exert the kind of media control during an election campaign that she enjoys now I think she will be sadly mistaken. If she has anything like her father's temperament, and we all know she does, I expect many a Macacan moment.

Talk about an incestuous bunch; but at least if she runs for anything she will finally have to go on the Rachel Maddow show, and then it will be curtains for Liz and Dick show.
no matter what the price!! Rachel will Cuisinart the bitch. And do it with a gracious smile.
“The greatest evildoers are those who don’t remember because they have never given thought to the matter, and, without remembrance, nothing can hold them back,”
Not surprising, when you consider Poppy Bush had to get one of his idiot sons in to cover-up all his misdeeds (one of W's first acts was to seal Poppy's papers). Now "Dick" has to get his demon spawn in there to cover-up HIS crimes, (plus, who will insure Halliburton profits if nobody's there to funnel no-bid contracts to them?).
That's what this nonsense is all about. Last time Dick Cheney appeared on TV, he confessed to being a war criminal, saying he approved of water torture. So he sends his daughter out to lie on his behalf and draw attention away from him.
This is nothing new: Draft-dodger Dick has been hiding behind his daughter since before she was born. Remember, he ducked Vietnam because his wife was pregnant with Liz.
true.

nothing will ever change until the american people demand to have a say over the economic system of this country, and realize that socialism is not a dirty word, until we confront them head on, the fascists will keep proliferating, how's that for some eliminationism?

... Liz Cheney undergo waterboarding, which is STILL illegal and STILL a war crime.
has administering the waterboarding more in mind
I'm guessin' Lizzie had to chew her way out of her mother's womb!

Nothing like a Cheney to get the dems to turn out in mass. She'd probably take a senate seat in Wyoming. I don't think she'd win in Vahginnie. I would hope the folks in Wyoming would realize that she's vermin. 43. She's 43. Some people just never learn.

It is no surprise to me at all that she might be going to run. The surprise will be when she wins a seat somewhere. When you have someone like Ken Starr admonishing things you're doing it means you have already gone off the track.
It's a little bit disgusting to find out how chummy she is with the folks at NBC. Again not surprising but disturbing.
She may be 43 but she dresses and appears more like 18.

and keep her out of office." I see you are giving the American public WAAAAAYYYY too much credit! Besides, don't you remember, SCOTUS has made this "The Corporate States of America". She will be the first Halliburton candidate.
“The greatest evildoers are those who don’t remember because they have never given thought to the matter, and, without remembrance, nothing can hold them back,”
SCOTUS also gave us a president the majority of Americans did see through: GWB. We voted him down, they said no way.
That is elitist bs. THe problem is the media not doing it's job.
Her secret weapon? Her feminine wiles (and her old home movie career)!
Ms. Spawn of Satan would become the first President SOLELY ELECTED BY HALLIBURTON.
“The greatest evildoers are those who don’t remember because they have never given thought to the matter, and, without remembrance, nothing can hold them back,”
Haven't both Liz and Dick said it is time to end DADT and that same-sex unions with benefits are fine and should be left up to the states? No US constitutional amendment as proposed by the Bush Administration. Both have used the phrase "freedom means freedom for everybody." That ain't gonna' fly with many Repubs and especially the Tea Baggers (the political TBs, not the folks who originally came up with the phrase...).
I've seen some stuff, man. And some thangs...
No Democrat would vote for her, and I am sure this position would be a liability with conservative Republicans. With her extremist conservative positions that even Ken Starr now has disagreed with publicly, I don't think she will be successful in Virginia. Wyoming, maybe. As for feminine wiles noted above, I don't think she has any.
Lawrence Wilkerson's commentary is always excellent.
Alyona does a great job of confronting and analysing important elements of American "democracy".
And Russia Today is doing an excellent job of "taking up the slack" left by our American Fawning Corporate Media.

Not soon enough!
Way to go, Lawrence Wilkerson!
I hope he has a bodyguard, though. Speaking ill of the Cheney family can be very dangerous to one's health ....
What we need is a two generation ban on family members holding the same public office.
The family "hook" has given us mediocre entertainers and politicians (and it's kinda hard to tell the difference, eh ?) whose only qualification is the name recognition.

Like her Daddy.
I had forgotten she had all those kids. As part of the "family values" Party, who is raising these kids while she is running around from network to network spewing her venon? Shouldn't she be home rearing the children and planning dinner parties for her closest pals and BFF, Mr. and Mrs. David Gregory.
WE got two! For the price of trillions in dollars and millions in lost lives. Sound fair to anyone?
A mini dick so to speak.
republicanism/conservatism is a mental illness and it is killing America!
I hate her politics, I also hate her dad.
BUT, she's an American and has a right to run for office regardless of what family she comes from.
I would campaign vehemently against her but I'd never deny her the right to run for office.
I have no problem with Chelsea running one day, or any random Kennedy for that matter so I don't care if she runs.
If she wins, well, that's another story.

I don't get it.
What is the problem with Liz Cheney running for office? What is your problem with voters deciding whether or not she is acceptable?
Did you have any problem with the number of Kennedys who ran for (and mostly won) public office over the past half century? I didn't. And no one should either. Let the voters decide.
Are you upset with Jay Rockefeller, a nephew of two Governors, being a Senator? Were you upset that Al Gore won a senate seat his father held?
One other thing. Liz Cheney is a bit more than a TV talking head. She is a lawyer (U of Chicago law school) and Served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs and, due to her family, has spent an entire life involved in politics.
I wonder how many sitting members of congress, on either side of the aisle, won elective office with less credentials than she has. I'd bet it is quite a few.
Your point is taken, but please don't come here singing the praises of Liz Cheney. The woman is a disgrace as are her parents.

don't get it, do you?
Her access to any opportunity has been through her genetics. Nothing more, nothing less.
She is a product of nepotism in the most severe manner.
From the high perches of business and government, her daddy steered open doors her way.
She walked through them without ever having to turn the knob.
IMO, this is the biggest problem we have in American education, business and politics.
Folks like LC do not have to compete with those who truly are the best and the brightest and even though she is miles behind some people in terms of intellect and ability, she has never had to compete with them because they can't even play in the same game.
She has taken positions throughout her life that she didn't have to earn. Because of that she feels as though those places are her right. In addition, because she was GIVEN those opportunities, humans of infinitely higher character and accomplishment have been denied. The door she gets to walk through has been slammed in their faces, and we will never know what greatness they would have been able to bring to the table.
It is a major reason why many, many Americans are ready to give up on this country, this experiment, and what they now perceive as this failure for this nation to remember why we revolted in the first place and what our creed of equality was supposed to mean, both in theory and in practice.
Until this shit stops, we will continue to follow that deep downward arch toward trivial importance in the eyes of the world.
It's very simple today - if you ain't got, you ain't gonna get.
If Liz Cheney runs for public office, the only people who will "give her" the job will be the voters. If they say yes she's in and if they say no she isn't. All the insults you tossed at her notwithstanding, that isn't nepotism; it's running for public office.
Did you have the same problem with Robert and Ted Kennedy? Or, for that matter, Patrick Kennedy?
an office, that is not nepotism per se. I never indicated as such. You made that leap on your own.
The opportunities she has received by virtue of her family have nonetheless provided her the avenue to public office and is an extension of the nepotism she has benefited from.
Just like all the others.
Yes, I have the same problem with the Kennedys, and the Pauls, and the Bonos, the Rockefellers, the Gores, the Bushes and the rest of the family hierarchies that pollute our system of opportunity.
You call them insults. I call them facts.
I'm glad you're willing to look through the tripe for the gems, thanks for that :)
With her political philosophy and father's name, Liz would not win a statewide election unless it were in Wyoming or some other uber-conservative state. She's just as polarizing -- but not as, yuk, likeable -- as Sarah Palin.
Liz interupts people all the time. That is considered wrong Liz. It prevents you from learning stuff, and you have a lot of learnin' ta do Liz.
How can you serve the people Liz, if you don't learn anything?
"Government by organized money is just as dangerous as Government by organized mob"
-= Franklin Delano Roosevelt =-
The Left, the Democrats, the liberals, the progressives have to push back on Liz Cheney NOW. Immediately. She is nothing more than a fear monger. Her whole shtick it "Be afraid, be very afraid" and that is how the Republics treat their base. We on the left have to push back now and never let up on this fear monger. We cannot live in fear. We cannot let the Republics press the fear meme. We should not let the Liz Cheney campaign get off the ground. The Democrats and everybody on the left have to point out at every opportunity that Liz Cheney is running for office and that is why she is on all the news shows and why she is saying what she is saying.
In response to Ken B.'s persistent but feeble effort to defend the indefensible:
How many lawyers do you think have been Deputy Assistant Secretary of some federal agency or other during the past eight to twelve years? Plenty. How many of them have made 40 major network appearances in the last year to opine on the current administration and it's response to terrorist threats, and given repeated opportunities to defend a family member for admitted participation in war crimes? Liz is the only one, and the major reason is nepotism (apparently along with cronyism, and the abhorrent trend of these media outlets to overload their guest spots with unqualified right wing apologists of all stripes). If she runs for office, she'll reap the benefit of all this intrinsically unwarranted public exposure that's clearly not available to any of her unconnected challengers.
Does Liz Cheney get more opportunities to be on TV than other people in her position because of who her father is? Sure she does. No argument.
And???
This is nothing new, and is true of many politicians' family members on both sides of the aisle. Earlier I mentioned the names Patrick Kennedy and Al Gore, both of whose fathers were US Senators. Did you object to them running for office as you object to Liz Cheney? I still do not get the point of singling her out as if this is something special or unusual.
One more time: If Liz Cheney decides to run, the voters will either elect or not elect her. If she wins it will not be a political entitlement based on her name (which, given Dick Cheney's polling numbers, probably hurts a lot more than it helps). It will be because the voters prefer her over the alternative(s).
I don't know how to say this more plainly.
your singular insistence in identifying the will of the voter as the measuring stick of LC's success or failure in a quest for public office is noted.
Do you not believe her path has been greased by her family name and that the inherent unfairness of that scenario is a continuing, dangerous ideal?
I have no issue with Liz Cheney running for office if she chooses. My contention is that she's woefully inadequate for the role, and that you're wrong to assert that her multiple appearances on major network news/political programs is warranted by her law degree and brief tenure at a modest Federal Agency-level position. She's had forty appearances in the past year because she's the spawn of Dick Cheney, and apparently pals around with the Gregory family.
I also don't disagree that having thoroughbred political lineage is a boon to a politician's career, but it's a laughable false equivalency to cite the Kennedy family as comparable, as if her Daddy Dick's stint as VP in any way provides the same political cachet. A more honest equivalence would be to see how many appearances were given to the children of Hubert Humphrey, or Gerald Ford, or even Joe Biden. Liz Cheney is a very off-key One Note Samba of fear, fear, fear, there's just not much to recommend her to public office.
Hubert Humphrey's son ran for Governor of Minnesota - based largely on the fact that he was Hubert Humphrey's son. He lost.
Gerald Ford's son Jack carved out a movie career based largely on the fact that he was Gerald Ford's son.
Joe Biden's son, Beau, is currently the Attorney General of Delaware.
And the Kennedy family remains a perfectly good example as well.
For the last time, I don't get the singling out of Dick Cheney's daughter here, as if her situation - a successful politician's child having advantages because of the family connection - is something special.
She's wrong.
Granted she is entitled to run. I'm all for it. I'd love to see her publicly humiliated. I'd love to see her in an actual debate.
In closing. I'd like to ask you this. Name one thing she's been right about?
What is your conceptual, continuity?
