Former UK Ambassador: US Sent Detainees to Uzbekistan for Torture
By Susie Madrak Friday Nov 06, 2009 6:00pmLook, we know most of the alleged Al Qaeda detainees are innocent, with far too many of them victims of horrifying tactics like the ones reported in this Raw Story article. Will there ever be justice for them, or will President Obama continue to turn a blind eye to the Bush torture policies? Because with recent reports of a known rendition plane in Birmingham, England, I have to wonder if those policies are still in place:
The CIA relied on intelligence based on torture in prisons in Uzbekistan, a place where widespread torture practices include raping suspects with broken bottles and boiling them alive, says a former British ambassador to the central Asian country.
Craig Murray, the rector of the University of Dundee in Scotland and until 2004 the UK's ambassador to Uzbekistan, said the CIA not only relied on confessions gleaned through extreme torture, it sent terror war suspects to Uzbekistan as part of its extraordinary rendition program.
"I'm talking of people being raped with broken bottles," he said at a lecture late last month that was re-broadcast by the Real News Network. "I'm talking of people having their children tortured in front of them until they sign a confession. I'm talking of people being boiled alive. And the intelligence from these torture sessions was being received by the CIA, and was being passed on."
Human rights groups have long been raising the alarm about the legal system in Uzbekistan. In 2007, Human Rights Watch declared that torture is "endemic" to the country's justice system.
Murray said he only realized after his stint as ambassador that the CIA was sending people to be tortured in Uzbekistan, a country he describes as a "totalitarian" state that has never moved on from its communist era, when it was a part of the Soviet Union.
Suspects in Uzbekistan's gulags "were being told to confess to membership in Al Qaeda. They were told to confess they'd been in training camps in Afghanistan. They were told to confess they had met Osama bin Laden in person. And the CIA intelligence constantly echoed these themes."
"I was absolutely stunned -- it changed my whole world view in an instant -- to be told that London knew [the intelligence] coming from torture, that it was not illegal because our legal advisers had decided that under the United Nations convention against torture, it is not illegal to obtain or use intelligence gained from torture as long as we didn't do the torture ourselves," Murray said.

you know. just to see if that would work maybe. or maybe we should just give him an oscar for a great acting performance.
Were quick to attack Bush/Cheney , republicans and Pelosi when she took impeachment OFF the table and they destroy our laws , constitution and created their dictatorship..
Now we Have Obama , Emanuel and the democrats breaking their oath to uphole our constitution & laws by not prosecuting Bush/ Cheney and the persons in their administrations for their crimes in torture , teason , illegal spying and so on..
Not only with they not proscute them but they are creating laws and censoring the information that would be used to convict them. Also they are giving our tax money again to the same war contractors who stole our money with their thief and other corruption.
There is something very wrong with our government and the elected officials ,,,, there is something very , very wrong..
You cannot read this story without realizing that we are a nation of war criminals.
This makes me sick in my soul.
It's up to the Justice Department and the FBI isn't it?
Ha ha ha. Extremely funny. What are the odds that they'll do anything? Exactly zero.
... unless you're a kid with some rock cocaine.
Release the prisoners in our jails for their crimes so they can also look forward...
bastards.
that the rest of the world won't come together and call the US out on all this shit, since it's beyond obvious that the US doesn't care, regardless of party.
Freakin' Boston Red Sox' private jet was a 'known rendition plane' for crissakes! ...really what is it gonna take to put some Real war criminals away?
http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/20...
a Boeing subsidiary was the contractor doing the renditions.

And also one of the executive jets that was logged as a CIA rendition plane, crashed in Mexico with tonnes of cocaine onboard.
based out of North Carolina? ...

GodBob, if it wasnt for Amy Goodman I wouldnt know Jack $h!t ....Jeppesen Dataplan from Wiki:
Alleged Involvement with CIA extraordinary rendition flights
On October 23, 2006, the New Yorker reported that Jeppesen handled the logistical planning for the CIA's extraordinary rendition flights. The allegation is based on information from an ex-employee who quoted Bob Overby, managing director of the company as saying "We do all of the extraordinary rendition flights—you know, the torture flights. Let’s face it, some of these flights end up that way. It certainly pays well." The article went on to suggest that this may make Jeppesen a potential defendant in a law suit by Khaled El-Masri.[6] Jeppesen was named as a defendant in a lawsuit filed by the ACLU on May 30, 2007, on behalf of several other individuals who were allegedly subject to extraordinary rendition. The suit was dismissed in February, 2008 on a motion from the United States government, on theory that proceeding with the case would reveal state secrets and endanger relations with other nations that had cooperated.[7]
Seems that some of our legal system follows the ethics of the law, and is keen to see justice done.

And they give us a ray of hope every now and then, like Obama promises and some judge actually citing in the favor of justice. But alas the glimmer of hope, it is shortlived; upon closer inspection it is only the glimmer of light we see as a new asshole takes the place of the previous on the outhouse shithole above.
I've been trying to be patient and cut Obama and his administration some slack but I am just about out of rope .
Very well said. I like the allusion to the asshole on the outhouse seat especially.
This is why there are Laws, Congress, and a Justice Department.
I'm sure they're working on it.
Oh, I'm splitting my sides here. Stop, you're too funny.
the more I begin to think that maybe I wasted my vote last year.
President Obama would rather try to "bring people together" when, in the end, the people he reaches out to with a handshake, greet him by punching him (metaphorically speaking) in the face. Look at the Teabaggers and the fact that Beohner and the other leadership in the Republican party cow-towing to them. Obama reaches out to welcome them to the table on discussions, and they tell him, in the words of Dick Cheney, "Go f*@$ yourself!"
Obama needs to start doing what's right - not what MIGHT make everyone happy. Every time the government tries to make EVERYONE happy instead of doing what's right, everyone ends up mad and rarely are people helped all that much. In the case of these detainees, they could be wrongly victimized when they did nothing wrong (which, with the way many were picked up in Afghanistan, is possible), and will have no recourse. What will their options be then? Well, we either hold innocent people indefinitely so they DON'T turn into terrorists who will come back after us, or we actually do something to show them that we actually do care about what happens to the innocent.
If Obama just wants to appease Republicans over and over and over again, while they call him a terrorist loving, fascistic, communistic socialist, then I think next time I'll do a write in vote for Super Mario - then my vote won't be such a waste.
I had gone ahead and written in Cynthia McKinney like I'd intended to. But I went and got scared of the thought of grampa McGrumpy with his finger on the button.
QUESTION: will President Obama continue to turn a blind eye to the Bush torture policies?
ANSWER: YES
My name is Big John and I told you so more than a year ago. When is C+L ever going to get it?
Nixon begat Carter who begat Reagan/Bush
Bush begat Obama who will begat something even worse. This is guaranteed. It's how the U.S.A. works.
All hail the great Carnac!
I was making the same prediction that we probably won't see much in reversals of such policies until a Democratic president wins reelection and doesn't have to worry about the next election cycle for his own ambitions.
Additionally anything encoded in a law, like the Patriot Act, would require an act of Congress, since they initiate legislation, and the president either approves or disapproves it, and if they over-ride his veto, he has to enforce it as Constitutionally mandated, although maybe with some discretion.
Presidents don't initiate legislation.
And as for the torture policy itself, can you provide any specific examples of torture being conducted that Obama or anyone in his administration authorized? Are there any memos floating about?
