'I Had A Dream' : Picture Stephen Colbert, Speaking To The Nation At 'Restoring Truthiness' Rally
I found this post by Mrs. Ammerica on Reddit the other day and I thought it was sheer genius -- and if nothing else, it made me smile. Wouldn't it be wonderful if Stephen Colbert led the nation to the Lincoln Memorial, in a rally called Restoring Truthiness?
I was woken in the middle of the night by this (along with the sound of my cat getting ready to pee on the rug).
Think about it. It'll be just like Colbert's mockery of GW Bush at the 2006 White House Correspondent's Dinner, but 500,000 people will be able to participate with him. We'll all stay totally in character as teabaggers. The kid with the microphone that interviews all the idiots at these things can come by and we'll ramble into his microphone.
This would be the high water mark of American satire. Half a million people pretending to suspend all rational thought in unison. Perfect harmony. It'll feel like San Francisco in the late 60s, only we won't be able to get any acid.
I know you're out there somewhere, Stephen, watching LOLcat gifs along side us. We need you. There's no way to have a logical public discussion with the teabaggers. The best we can do is to mimic them. Show them a mirror and hopefully some will realize how ridiculous they actually are... Or maybe they won't even realize that they're being mocked, which could be even more awesome.
Note: The response to this post has blown my mind. I really did jump out of bed at like 5AM and type this thing up. Then I checked from work and it's front page and there's a Facebook page and people are emailing one of the Executive Producers. I was just hoping some people would get a laugh out of it, and now it has over 6,800 upvotes? It's like I cracked the best joke of my life in a public place.
But to be fair, both pugsworth and hobbit6 posted the general idea before me in that Jon Stewart thread. I just fleshed it out a little bit. Anyway, I don't really know what to do or say about actually trying to make a Colbert Rally happen. I'd sure as hell be there, and I think I'd opt for the "Go back to the rug store with the rest of the Afghans" sign.
I just wanted to say that I'm really happy that so many people got a kick out of it. And the thought of Colbert himself actually maybe seeing this is probably the coolest thing that's ever happened to me so far in life.
EDIT 2: vinhboy has created a wikia page... http://www.colbertrally.com/ Nothing up on it yet, though. Please feel free to change that!
Here's the Facebook page. You know you want to! And from colbertrally.com:
Restoring Truthiness is a true grassroots movement propelled by YOU, the citizens of the internetz. Our goal is simple: Petition Stephen Colbert to hold a Restoring Truthiness Rally for the American people.

I will go if we can get this organized. Lots of people from reddit are ready to go. We need word of mouth. I know we could outnumber glenn becks and sarah failins march of retards.
Show the president we dont give a crap about what those idiots think.
This is a great thing. It would work and really make a point. I would go for sure. Hopefully the power of the internet tubes can make it happen. It would be a good idea to pass this along to as many people as you can send it to. And then see what happens. Maybe, just maybe.
The conservatives usually have fox news backing there marches. They then by peer pressure get CNN and the other networks to cover the rally. So the end result is usually alot of coverage for a rally that only fox news viewers care about.
We need to have a network to cover this rally. This is why the much larger marches usually dont get attention. They dont get a network to cover it indepth. Immigration and Gay rights rally as usually much bigger. All you hear is a tiny snippet on the news.
Reading this made me put on my happy pants. Just the mention of Colbert does that to me. It sounds more like the beginning of a great movie. Where's Michael Moore? Someone call him.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

Damn, that was a hard one. How did Glenn figure that out? He must be a genius.
Knowing the way glenn's mind works, I would suggest he cheated to arrive at that sum but it was enlighening..
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
just heard you on STEPHANIE MILLER - good job!

There might be a more effective way to put it, like "Turn Off Your TV"

TURN OFF FOX.

Ok blogmonsters. Let's see if we can't get the media working for US for a change.
I see no reason why Colbert wouldn't go along with this, and I see no reason why his producers and Comedy Central wouldn't either. PUBLICITY.
SOMEONE out here in the blogosphere has to have an "in" with these folks.
Let's make this happen. I'd be there in a heartbeat.
87,000 people? Shit...this event would double that number EASILY. This whole event is worth it, just to watch Beck swallow his tongue when he sees the crowd.

and his staff deserves credit, too. Of course, in today's world, the neo-cons, repukes and idiots like Limpballs and the Beckster make doing great sarcasm a lot easier.
I hope Colbert and his buds can make something like this happen - maybe in NY - near the new Muslim community center?!
Truthiness is indeed what we need right now, and I am heartened to see/hear at least some on the left actually calling out the leftover Cheney/Bush creeps about their lies and warmongering.

Good to hear you on Stephanie Miller, Susie.
A flock of eagles would be nice. We are patriots you know.

opening graphics. I just fear that the irony-deficient and people who don't watch Colbert wouldn't get the joke - and that Fox News & CNN wouldn't explain it to them.
we do have to consider i ran threat...
A comment like that can get you put on ignore.

Can we start estimating the crowd size now? I say in retrospect there were at least ten million.

A bazillion.
Of course, all illegal.

Sorry, but I disagree profoundly. Colbert is at his best when he follows his own, original, brilliant ideas. Having him appear at a large-scale mock-up of Beck's event, which was a self-parody anyway, is weak satire. The only effective way to mimic Beck is to do the sort of thing Jon Stewart's been doing: small-scale riffs that don't make Beck out to be more important than he is.
Remember, too: the Correspondents' Dinner was wholly unexpected -- he gave his performance for posterity rather than to the utterly hostile crowd that surrounded him. Having him put on a show surrounded by supporters who "get the joke" would make for a lousy event, IMO. It wouldn't be particularly inspired or courageous... and "inspired" and "courageous" are the two words that immediately come to mind when I think of Stephen Colbert.
my giddiness just got traumatized
Wrong. A huge event to show the epic fail of Glenn Beck and his mindless minions.

The campaign itself is worth the effort. Reading the comments at http://www.colbertrally.com/ from people without a sense of humour has made my day.
Otherwise, I kinda agree. In a perfect world, SC would have been a guest speaker at Beckapalooza.
OMG - I get giddy just thinking about being a "bagger for a day".
For just one day, say good bye to coherent thought, rational thinking and respect for the "truth". It would be street performance at its' purest form.
Loving it!!!
And throw that dictionary out the window when you are making your signs.

Oh, my sign will read:
Undirected Fury! Please, some shadow corporation... Harness My Rage! $uper Cheap!!
I'll also chant "Rabble, rabble, rabble" like crowds on South Park.
ED SCHULTZ is talking about a rally too...
those 2 together? woo-eee! maybe?

Indeed. The free market will have spoken.
I think the event should be called...Beckisaloozapalooza.

It's been done. I mean that the ultimate satire of Beck was done years ago. It's called Network, a wonderful movie hatched in the evil brain of Paddy Chayefsky. Peter Finch and Chayefsky give us a Beck even better, more sympathetic, more intelligent, than the one we actualy ended up with, but he's still recognizably the same character. FOX and Murdoch and his Arab financial backing are all there as well. Go right out and buy it, now. I'm telling you, America, stop whatever you're doing, go to the window, open it and shout with me, "I'm as mad as hell, I'm not going to take it anymore, and I'm going right out to buy Network right now!". You'll feel better right away, and even better than that after seeing the movie.
The second point is that Network tells us that this idea of rally at the Lincoln Memorial would put Colbert at risk. For one thing, the movie ends with The Mad Prophet of the Airwaves being assassinated live on-camera. They tell us that histroy repeats every tragedy as a farce. But what happens when the original was a farce? Wouldn't the repeat end up as tragedy? In this case it's even more complicated, since the Beck story can be seen as the farcical replay of the tragic decline of TV news. So Colbert doing Beck would be the replay of the replay. Does that flip to tragedy, or just to more intense farce? Is farce more intense than Beck physically possible, I mean possible without threatening the space-time continuum?

Get rid of Washington's Ultimate Insider and Top Golfer - a man who is WAAAAY too busy to even come home to do editorial meetings or a debate!! He should interview West Point Grad/Army Capt/Businessman/Lawyer Justin Coussoule - the man who actually RUNNING for Congress in the 8th of Ohio!!!
