Poll: Obama Broke Through Polarization Across Party Lines

(Clip from Luntz, Maslansky Strategic Research, whose results are similar to Democracy Corps.)

I can't tell you how happy I am to see this. It's going to be a lot easier to fix things when the president inspires this kind of support from both Democrats and Republicans:

Democracy Corps conducted dial testing of the speech with 50 Independent and weak partisan voters in Henderson, Nevada, followed by focus group discussions with voters who shifted toward support of Obama’s economic plan after seeing the speech. The dial group participants were evenly divided among Obama and McCain voters.

These swing voters reacted strongly to Obama’s message. Despite having a Republican tilt, 68 percent of these voters came into the speech approving of Obama’s job performance. After the speech, these already high marks moved even higher, rising to a remarkable 82 percent. In fact, Obama saw gains nearly across the board, on both personal traits and confidence in his handling of most major issues. In particular, the president strengthened his position on fiscal issues, gaining 26 points on taxes and 18 points on the federal budget.

What was most striking about the reaction of these voters was the lack of polarization. In past State of the Union speeches and other major presidential addresses we have tested, voters from the opposite party of the president tend to have a knee-jerk negative reaction, generally rating his words less favorably and moving below 50 on our dial scale of 0 to 100. That was not the case with Obama’s speech. Republicans rarely dropped below 50 and even exceeded 70 during parts of the President’s speech.

Most importantly, for most of the speech the dial lines for Democrats, Republicans and Independents moved in concert in a way we have rarely seen. While the partisan lines did diverge on a couple of important issues – including Obama’s economic recovery plan, health care, and government regulation – they mostly showed a unified, national response in favor of the President’s agenda. At times, it seemed as if Obama was deliberately speaking past his audience in the divided House chamber and offering a broader appeal to American voters hungry to move past partisan squabbling. That appeal clearly connected with these voters.

The President also had success on one of his most important, and difficult tasks: selling the financial rescue plan to a skeptical public. Indeed, initial reactions to his discussion of the financial crisis were circumspect. But when Obama argued that the financial rescue was necessary to keep the economic recovery from being choked off before it could get started, and particularly when he insisted his policy was “not about helping banks, it’s about helping people,” the dials moved strongly in Obama’s favor, with virtually no difference between Democrats, Republicans and Independents. Moreover, when Obama focused on the need to hold banks accountable, end their use of corporate jets, and require them to actually start lending again in return for taxpayer money, he received some of his highest scores of the night. As a result, he gained 16 points on his handling of the financial and banking crisis in post-speech testing.

We also conducted two focus groups after the dial session among voters whose support for Obama’s economic plan increased after watching the speech – one group comprised of McCain voters, the other of Obama voters. Both groups were deeply impressed with Obama; they saw him as sincere, passionate, in command, and wholly committed to the task at hand. Perhaps most importantly, they strongly agreed with his simple statement that “I get it.” By succinctly and accurately diagnosing the problems we face without engaging in political finger-pointing, he inspired confidence in his ability to move the country forward.

Ya bastages!
That was an historic moment...

...that he fails. Obama is winning over fairminded Conservatives...period.

many of the hardliners and the likes of limpbow out there---spewing BS!
This is good news --if we can trust the polls!

this was an important moment for the reforming of healthCare cause. the recent report suggesting what healthCare will cost just in 5 years is scary. we can't compete with this NO care/for strict profit healthCare system. many on here having been hard on Obama......i don't see it. the guy is doing what i thought he would do. we must support him to get what we believe is needed......affordable healthCare.

I hate when people use the term "affordable healthcare". I have friend who is on VA disablity and because it is not 100% service related he does not get dental benifits. He went to the county and they looked at his income, a whopping $980 per month and said he can afford to pay up to $380 per month for dental services. They cut off income at $600 per month as what you need and all other moneys are discretionary. He will have to go into debt to get the dental work done he needs. Is that affordable healthcare?

Greetings from a Canadian! I really hope you folks in the U.S. get proper healthcare reform. I believe in the motto "What we desire for ourselves, we wish for all." I think Obama would "get" that.

I watched the Obama speech, and then the Republican reaction afterwards, given by the Governor of Louisiana. (Sorry, I forgot his name.) The Governor said something about how Republicans are okay with the idea of affordable healthcare, but were opposed to government-run healthcare because it's better to have medical decisions made by doctors and patients instead of government bureaucrats.

That argument is totally bogus. With government-run Medicare, medical decisions are made by doctors and patients. In all the years/decades I've used the Canadian Medicare system, I've never once had to deal with any kind of bureaucratic interference. (I'm going to be 50 years old in April.) Right now, with America's private health insurance system, you get all kinds of interference from corporate bureaucrats who look for excuses to deny you coverage. And we're supposed to believe that government bureaucrats are scarier?

Back in 1992, I found a lump in my breast (which fortunately turned out to be benign). I went to my GP to get examined. He referred me to a specialist who also examined me and then scheduled a biopsy. I went to the hospital for the surgery a few weeks later, and got a clean bill of health shortly after that. At no point did anyone have to contact any government bureaucrat for permission to get anything done. All I had to do was show my healthcard. Government-run universal healthcare means less bureaucracy.

I wish you all the best of luck with this fight.

We need all the luck we can get!

Soo....everthing that happened the last 8 years leading up to this clusterf*ck (call it what it is, it is a clusterf*ck), is all A-OK as long as you'all look "forward". Bipartisanship. Gotta love it. Abso-fricking-lutely no alternatives is the best damn way to run a democracy. Who gets the blame when something goes wrong? NOBODY, cuz hey, Warshington all agrees. Hooray, whip out the bands. Obama has succeeded in single handedly taking American politics into an official ONE PARTY nation. Congrats, all.

You are one perpetually unhappy bastard.

how great bipartisanship is. Usually it leads to the average citizen getting butt f*cked, in the interests of bipartisanship of course. Most wars, started with bipartisanship. They work out great too, huh?
Sorry Left. As I've said before, and will say over and over again, he's a politician. Really good politicians are really good at giving speeches and really good at lying.

Your acting like Obama kicked the soapbox you where standing on out from under you.

After the spring thaw and he gets out of the igloo things will get better.

In otherwords...If you build it, they will come.

he made the 20 percenters cry!!

Obama's Speech was great. I'm glad other people recognized that too.

I loved the way he explained the stimulus package in a way that most people could understand. I only took Economics 100, and I had no trouble following the logic. And the stimulus package makes sense. It's way more sensible that the usual conservative policy of trying to fix everything with tax cuts.

I also like the way Obama explained how the economy got into this mess, and sent out the message that his administration would not tolerate the greed, waste and mismanagement of the recent past.

Yeah, he corrected that mismanagement when he ordered up 17,000 more troops for Afghanistan. Always looking forward for Corporate Military Industrial Complex. I would imagine that with his great managerial skills he will continue to back the Zionist Cabal in Israel with cash and high tech munitions. We gotta keep up the fucking genocide there. You betcha. Oh, lets not forget paying off Telecoms to wiretape our nation and maybe you. You are so delusional.

shhhhhh were going to get jobs ! nevermind the bodys behind the green curtain!

Then why did they announce that his withdrawal plans from Iraq would be in 19 months rather than 16? Also they announced that 50,000 troops would remain as support. Thats 50,000 armed troops. This is all very contrary to his campaign promises. I smell a two faced rat.

with all due respect, and believe me...I want to see the troops home as much as anyone...we have troops stationed all over the globe.

50,000 troops in a country of that size is not big, and they're probably going to be sequestered on a military base in a remote area.

Like it or not, troops also play a political role. They are a show of support.

The bigger issue is to remove the perception of us as an occupying army to one of a partner interested in regional security. Obama spoke of forming "new alliances". Well, this is a step in that direction.

Remember, the presence of U.S. troops in Iraq makes it politically difficult for Israel or any other regional "neighbor" to make noise in Iraq or to invade under some pretense.

We are where we are because of a really stupid decision by GW Bush. Barack can only play the hand he's been dealt.

please read anything by chalmers johnson

our 800+ military bases are, akin to roman proconsuls, part of a military empire that we cannot afford economically nor politically.

would you be cool with 500,000 foreign troops in america? would that add to regional stability? our military has been criminally used by successive admins for decades, and tradition doesn't make it any less wrong.

with all due respect.

The world is not a perfect place. This isn't Care Bear Land. America has interests to protect, as do other countries.

And if you don't see the major difference between the placement of American forces around the globe UNTIL GEORGE BUSH BECAME PRESIDENT...and the use of foreign occupying forces by other nations...like Germany and Japan and even the Romans...and how America uses her forces...then you really have no grasp of who America is is, how she is perceived and just how we have proven ourselves over the long haul to be different than other superpowers.

THAT is what George Bush destroyed. America's legacy. He has cost America her respect and admiration around the world...and THAT is the single most important thing that President Obama is trying to correct.

And believe me...I know we haven't been perfect. We made a mess in Nicaraqua, Chile, Indochina...but overall...our record is more than pretty good. AND...we admit our mistakes attempt to make restitution and try to move forward.

sorry, when your reference to my position as "Care Bear Land" your "with all due respect" seems empty.

anyhoo... some data

http://www.commondreams.org/views04/0115-08.htm

fine, take the argument that america "is different" (see, exceptional), and that we are the eternal force of good and light.

cool, knock yourself out. (i disagree, strenuously, but i'll leave that aside for now).

your response glossed over the main crux of my post, that being we cannot afford our empire of bases economically or politically.

or do you think we can?

America's Legacy is a legacy of Empire. Bush wasn't the first and apparently not the last President to think he owns the world.

Rogue State by William Blum shows our history.

America has interests to protect, as do other countries.

You mean corporate interests. Criminal interests. Oil interests. Military interests.

The bigger issue is to remove the perception of us as an occupying army to one of a partner interested in regional security.

How do you partner with someone who has raped and murdered your family?

Israel and our greed is the regional destabilizer. Also our history of raping Iran and Palestine.

Poppy Bush invaded Panama and killed 2,500 civilians to get one man, Noriega. Again his approval rating skyrocketed. American values again.

War is wrong, America is wrong...yada yada...then you DO want to live in Care Bear Land.

Countries...like people...are not perfect. Personally, if you don't draw any distinctions between the Japanese desire for empire...and their approach...Nazi Germany...the Roman Empire...the Greeks...the Mongols...the list goes on and on...and us...then I disagree.

Just remember...WE are the ONLY country on the planet that GAVE conquered countries back to their people.

Not because we were coerced...not because we were forced out. But because it was the right thing to do...it was in our interest...and the better interests of all.

the indigenous American Indians. And as far as giving nations back, they are pretty screwed up after. Agent Orange duh. Oh sorry I forgot, you never did conquer Viet Nam, just fucked it up much like Iraq.

why don't you just call me a "blame america firster"?

those are nice little strawmen you have constructed...

moving on:

might i introduce you to a place called okinawa

Okinawans resent U.S. forces for occupying precious farm land, staging dangerous and noisy military exercises, contaminating the environment and committing thousands of crimes and sexual assaults on civilians—the latest being the alleged molestation in early July of a 14-year-old schoolgirl by a drunken U.S. Marine.

or maybe south korea

DEACHURI, South Korea - The prayers and chants of the elderly farmers and young activists waft from the circle of land in front of a small white-walled church at the heart of this village on the prow of a hill some 65 kilometers south of Seoul.

"No US base," they shout in Korean. "Save our land."

It is a daily ritual staged in defiance of thousands of South Korean police against a plan to turn the region of rice paddies and orchards into one of America's largest overseas bases.

or howzabout saudi arabia. see, al qaeda.

or iraq.

you can paint me in whatever light you prefer. i am a supporter of the armed forces, which is why i dislike their abuse by the civilian leadership--oftentimes at the behest of int'l finance and multinational corporations.

L&P, i really like your posts and i generally agree with you...

obviously this is not one of those times...

yet my passion about this was not intended to be nasty to you. so, if that is how it came across i do apologize. (i threw away the rest of my coffee)

We have a new conductor and everyone wants to get on the train. Good, everyone, hop on board.

..NO he didn't!

Where do I apply for one of those shovel ready gigs?

I know of a septic tank removal company around here that could use a person with your particular talents.

That's the kind of job Americans don't want to do.

I was thinking something easy, about 2 hours a week. Something that doesn't interfere with my social life and internet habit.

You're not qualified

Hey

in this mess employers should be falling all over themselves to hire us.

has anyone thought that maybe just maybe, he's winning them over because he is giving them typically Republican policies? Naw, couldn't be.

Congratulations for the first time in the many years of reading this site on a daily basis your the first to go on my ignore list. In this time of hopefulness and change your constant negative comments are to much for me.

I agree with both of you.

Obama needs work and we need hope.

Just stay chilly, they just might fix it faster than you think????

i think you may be in the right ball park there, even pat the lets assanate robertson and joe the smoe liberdouch love them some obama! watch out barry libercrotch is a kiss kiss kisser!

Words are not empty things. They convey meaning and what is in our mind. Having a president that knows how to use them is extremely important. In our modern age, image, words and appearances count for about half of our interactions. If you can't convince people to participate in your government, sooner or later it will fail. Obama was brilliant with his oratory.

(example: Jindal may be a Rhodes Scholar, but if he were speaking on a soapbox somewhere, I'd walk right past-- dull, dull, dull. If Obama were speaking, I'd pull up a seat.)

Everyone is in this mess together. He is showing that he knows that and that if we all do our part, we just might all get out of it together. That's what people want to hear from their elected officials.

Exactly right, POP.

It's the politics of inclusion...not exclusion.

The GOP wins by dividing the country and creating scapegoats and bogeymen.

Progressives win by pulling people together and letting them know that we're ALL Americans...even if we disagree on certain things.

Eventually...hating all the time gets old and tiresome. It is counter productive and people eventually figure that out. Sometimes it is hard times that pull people together, as unfortunately is the case this time.

Hopefully, we will all pull together when times are good...instead of bitching at one another over nonsensical shit like race, gender or sexual orientation.

I can understand if people can't believe what they are hearing. The country has been used and abused for eight or twelve years or more. But I am thrilled to see that some republicans are open minded to what Obama has to say.

Oh, and what's different, CC? His emphasis on education, for one thing, and his realization of how much it costs! And an offer to help.

Also, he's not sugar-coating it. We all know it's going to be a long, tough road to travel. It's so refreshing to be talked to like an adult and not a naive 5 year old.

But that comment ought to make sense to nearly anyone.

Canuck is a troublemaking, agitationmonger, with nothing to lose.

Canada is part of NAFTA

And when America sneezes the rest of the world wipes their noses.

However, it seems his energy could be put to better use behind his own border.

As Michael Moore has pointed out time and time again, Americans agree on many more issues than they disagree on. We've just never had a leader who could (or was willing to) articulate those common values.

Yes, the catastrophe has forced us to work together. But the illusion of a divided country is an invention of the Right (and the Corporate Media). Because it's the only way they can stay in power.

jesus next youall will be putting your arm on joe libermans shoulder and wanting to invite him home for supper, thiers a reason why liberdouch loves him the new package in the land of oz!

we're talking about our fellow citizens, not that creep. He's the antithesis of bipartisanship.

Our partisan differences are the result of the marketting of wedge issues done by political parties during election years. Republican or Democrat; most of us have the same issues and problems in our lives.

has learned over the last several weeks that the nation's banking system and economy, the whole world's are in way worse shape than anyone imagined before January 20.

some bad news regarding Medicare, national security, etc. He's got a lot of stage setting to do.

Bush had a national approval rating of 95% during his Mission Accomplished speech, then things slowly unravelled. American values, go figure. Be careful Obama, they will crucify you.

the public mood goes from cow-like incomprehension to grizzly bear-like rage soon enough.

)O(

In Edmund Burk's Reflections on the Revolution in France (1790), he spoke approvingly of the English as cow like in refusing the excitability of the French Radical cricket that makes a lot of noise, but is comparatively much smaller.

Basically, he was arguing for incrementalism, which can be tiring, but he had a great visual eye.

I loved it. President Obama is engaging the people who put him in power to enact change and reaching past the firewall tactics of the collection of fools known as the GOP.

Every day, your gov is making great strides into the 21st century... finally. Come on in the water is fine! :)

PS Disregard the bitter, incoherent ramblings of my fellow Canadian, ConcernedCanuck, he is just pissed that his beloved Conservative party will be booted out the door at the earliest convenience.

That, and it has been a long winter up here. All this cold can grind a person down.

)O(

We're 85 today

Blow some my way.

how to make safe peanut butter again.

That might be a start.

will probably be the main course of the masses for a while.

Peanutbutter factory inspector? I think that one's covered in the Stimulus bill.

I hope for the quick death of the Reslug, Hate-Fest party!!
