Stupak Working With McConnell to Stop Healthcare Bill

I am so tired of living in a country where a group of religious extremists get to hold our rights hostage, but apparently that's not changing anytime soon:

An aide to Rep. Bart Stupak (D. Mich.) coordinated opposition to a Senate compromise on the place of abortion in health care legislation this morning with the Republican Senate leadership, the Conference Catholic Bishops, and other anti-abortion groups, according to a chain of frantic emails obtained this morning by POLITICO.

stupak_92c89.jpg

The emails show that Stupak -- who has so far remained silent on language accepted by Senator Ben Nelson (D. Neb.) and faces intense pressure from the White House to accept it -- is already working behind the scenes to oppose the compromise.

They also demonstrate a previously unseen degree of coordination between Stupak and the office of Republican leader Mitch McConnell.

Stupak is the leader of a group of pro-life Democrats who say they’ll back the sweeping legislation if it uses government money to pay for abortion, while McConnell is firmly committed to killing the legislation. The fact that the two have made common cause against the Senates health care compromise will likely further infuriate Stupak’s Democratic colleagues in the House, and demonstrates his willingness to stop any bill that doesn’t pass his test.

“Guys - when will we see your letters of opposition to the managers amendment?? We need them ASAP!” wrote Erika Smith, a Stupak aide, at 9:23 this morning, less than an hour after the amendment had become available.

The email’s recipients included key staffers for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, National Right to Life, the Family Research Council, as well as Autumn Fredericks Christensen, aide to a top pro-life Republican Joe Pitts, and Lanier Swann, a McConnell aide.

Now, if we only had people dedicated to voting against any congressional asshole to sell us down the river with a bill that mandates something with little or nothing to protect us from the greed of the insurance industry. A *promise* to oust them, whether by primary or general election.

If it's that unpopular, we should be able to do something about it.

(Where's my single payer, anyway?)

you would think he would consider his constituents. If any state needs help it's Michigan. Pretty soon they'll be sneaking over the border to Canada.

Stupak represents the Upper Peninsula. He lives in Menominee, which borders Wisconsin, about an hour-hour and a half north of Green Bay.

And while Detroit was gaining jobs throughout most of the last century, the U.P. was losing jobs. My paternal grandparents moved south from Gladstone(Stupak's childhood home) to Muskegon in the early '40s because there were no jobs in the U.P..

BTW, if you weren't aware, most of the rest of Michigan is pretty contemptuous of metro Detroit.

statusquObama, change you can only pretend in

There's black people there, and, especially in Detroit's 'burbs, it is one of the most racist areas of the country I've ever been.

I have quite a bit of family in the Detroit metro area. They watch Detroit T.V. stations; root for Detroit sports teams, read Detroit papers, and all the other things suburbanites everywhere do that associates them with the nearby city. Ask most any suburbanite on vacation where they are from and they will generally reference the city they are near.

Not the Detroit burbies. Ask any one of them where they are from, and their response will always be be "Michigan." The racial divisions of the sixties and seventies are still alive and well in the Detroit Metro area.

This bill is nothing more than a new tax that takes money from your pocket and funnels it directly into the pockets of big insurance.

Let's face it. We've been had. This reform is a disaster and doesn't even reform anything. It's a windfall for the insurance industry and big pharma, and I don't think this is what most of us had in mind when we began to push for health care reform.

Obama is turning into a massive disappointment. Barack's supporters are saying this bill has to pass no matter what, else Obama will look the failure. But I sure wouldn't want credit for this clusterf*ck. He should allow the bill to fail and give full credit to those who turned it into the steaming pile it became. Then let voters take action in the 2010 midterms.

With democrats like that, who needs republicans. On the other hand, at this point I don't care who kills it as long as it gets killed. Then they can start over and pass something usefull through reconciliation. Of course I won't hold my breath for that, but I'm better off with things the way they are rather than with this abomination of a bill. I am uninsured now, but at least I don't have to pay fines.

This bill is the equivalent of Bush's privatization of Social Security.

It will take public funds and turn them over to corporations . Being private ,these entities are not required to account to the taxpayers-only to their investors ,for the decisions they make about OUR health . Their failures and misdeeds will be hidden behind their corporate doors . Their formulas will be trade secrets , just as Diebolds software was.

Because they are for profit , these decisions will be based on profit returns, not healthcare excellence.
Because they will receive billons in taxpayers monies they will have limitless funds to fight reform, as we have seen Wall St do, with the bail out..

Investors will demand less hospital staffing and determine doctors decisions , yet insurance companies cannot be sued for malpractice .
Since there is nothing that ensures competition in he healthcare insurance industry. they will soon become our next too- big -to-fail business whose CEOs will reap bonuses while they hand out death and disability and the government hands over more of our money for less and less actual coverage.

Aren't most of the stages of fascism present in the policies of Imperial Rome?

Maybe not the capitalists, but they were sparing in doling out citizenship status.

Ron Paul's domestic economic strategies like ending the income tax and implementing a national sales tax are regressive and would hurt the middle and lower classes. On the other hand, his ideas closing down American military bases abroad are good. We waste a lot of money through the MIC. Maybe Paul could be useful and not to damaging with a good congress. One would think the end of the Cold War would have taken care of that.

But the republican controlled Congress failed to cough up money, when Clinton asked their help so we could assist CIS in dismantling and destroying their weaponry, and now the material is circulating in the underground market for fast cash, helping rogue states and terrorists gain such weaponry, perhaps necessitating the continued need for ICBMs, SCLBM's, ABM's, and the SDI which was in violation of the TPGASEUOSUNIMCB.

In fact, I think that's why boosh wasn't concerned about terrorism before 9-11, because he saw any terrorism talk as contrary to his plan to reinvigorate SDI.

"fall in love", get married, move there and enjoy living in a civilized country that decided long ago that the health of it's citizens was a top priority.

Or we could move to Germany, Great Britain, Japan, Sweden, Canada and find the same type thinking.

As T.R. Reid wonders in his excellent book, "The Healing of America", why is it the American government just doesn't care about the American public? Where is the "moral" imperative?

Just look around the world at what we are doing as a country and that's where our "moral imperative" is. CENTCOM/The Pentagon/the MIC get all the money they want for every imperialistic, hegemonic plan they can hatch, but the American people are left to die at home in pain and suffering because they lack "health insurance".

And in this economy...even four years from now when this legislation kicks in, I fear the economy might still be where it is now or worse. Then what? How many Americans will have to go without heat, food, transportation etc. in order to be in "compliance" with the new MANDATE? (You WILL SUBMIT!!!!)

But after all, it is the leaders of a country who determine the policy, and it’s always a simple matter to drag people along whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. This is easy.

I know it's frustrating that an apathetic citizenry is more concerned with Tiger's sex life than the direction of our country, but that's where we are. Does anyone really believe this about abortion? This is about stopping health care reform, period. Abortion is being used by this damned idiot and his minions just like the Republicans have used it for decades with their base; as a means to an end. This guy knows what current law is, and until this effort to reform health care, he has not made any effort to change current health insurance laws. But in another vain, this is why we have a separation of Church and State in this country. There is an inherent belief by the religious right they are correct in all matters of faith, and therefore nothing else matters. Can someone please explain to me the diffrences between the extremist christians and extremist muslims? Both want to enshrine their conservative religious beliefs into national laws, and have the state governened according to their irrational beliefs. And people wonder why I criticize religious practices. We have conservative religious figures actually using prayer to kill health care reform, now how much proof does one need to see how far off the rail religion has gone. I am no fan of this health care bill, as a matter of fact, I think it needs to be killed and started over, but for a much different reason, as explained by Howard Dean. But these hypocrites claim to be men of the cloth, yet they would continue to damn poor and sick people to death. As Bishop Harry Jackson stated in a forum on health care, why should his quality of health care be diminished so that others can get health care. Now there's your compassionate, conservative christian right there. Any person still attending these bastards churches should be totally ashamed of themselves, but then again if they are attending these churches, they have no shame nor understanding what the true meaning of faith is. So I guess hell will freeze over before these damned immoral people get it!
