You Run Arnold, We Run Jennifer

You Run Arnold, We Run Jennifer Yellow Dog Blog

There's a big push in the Republican party to amend the U.S. Constitution to allow foreign-born Americans to serve as president. Their poster-boy for this movement is clearly California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who they believe, based on how dim and easily-amused many Americans are, would prevail if allowed to run in 2008.

While I'm reluctant to dismiss a Schwarzenegger candidacy based on his lack of qualification and intellect – I mean, look at how George W. Bush manages to look like a genius to 50 million of our countrymen – that constitutional amendment would allow Democrats to bring someone forward who would smoke Arnold at every turn...read on

If you didn't watch Rachel Maddow's debate with Pat Buchanan Thursday night, you missed an outstanding display of corporate media-financed white supremacy.

Pat Buchanan repeated the same exhausting argument that Judge Sotomayor is unqualified for the Supreme Court and therefore doesn't deserve the nomination -- in fact, she's been elevated, in Pat's estimation, based solely on race and not intellect. He said to Rachel:

I don't think Judge Sotomayor is qualified for the United States Supreme Court. She has not shown any great intellect here or any great depth of knowledge of the Constitution. She's never written anything that I've read in terms of a law review article or a major book or something like that on the law.

Oh.

So qualifications are suddenly important to Pat.

While pissing all over Judge Sotomayor's qualifications, judicial record, accomplishments and achievements, Pat Buchanan thinks Sarah Palin! is qualified to be President of the United States.

Sarah Palin -- who couldn't accurately describe the duties of the vice president during a nationally televised vice presidential debate. Remember this?

I'm thankful the Constitution would allow a bit more authority given to the vice president if that vice president so chose to exert it in working with the Senate and making sure that we are supportive of the president's policies and making sure too that our president understands what our strengths are.

Sarah Palin -- a politician who's less intellectually curious than George W. Bush, has less experience and fewer credentials than the worst president in American history. And Pat Buchanan thinks she's the best Republican ever. Presidential material.

But Judge Sotomayor is intellectually unqualified for the Supreme Court, right? And Sarah Palin is qualified for the highest office in the land.

What conclusion can we draw from this inconsistency? Easy. Pat Buchanan hates brown people. Read his latest awful editorial and tell me this isn't true. If he doesn't hate brown people, he simply, then, believes white males are far superior in almost every way (to be fair, he admits to Maddow that blacks can run fast).

He continues by complaining that white people are being discriminated against and this is a terrible crime. What Pat Buchanan will never admit is that for every one Frank Ricci, there are literally thousands of Americans with dark skin or "exotic" names who are being held back or punished or imprisoned for no other reason than their race or ethnicity. It's been that way for hundreds of years here.

This naturally doesn't make discrimination against white people "okay." In an imperfect system, though, correcting our massive racial imbalance means that, unfortunately, a few Frank Ricci types fall through the cracks. But if people like Pat Buchanan would embrace the spirit of correcting the imbalance, we'd be able to fix these cracks.

Ultimately, however, Pat Buchanan is an old white man who is clinging desperately -- and desperately is the appropriate adverb -- to the past, as Rachel pointed out. He fears the inevitable browning of America and so he's lashing out more and more often with this venomous, divisive, hate-mongering language.

The serious question here is whether MSNBC will continue to finance his clearly white supremacist views. If there's anyone in America who doesn't deserve more air time, it's people like Pat Buchanan. They had their time and they failed. Their reign was destructive and a blight on American history. They have no place in the discourse anymore.

Time to step aside, Pat. For the good of the country.

Cue the Latino-bashers:

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama named federal appeals judge Sonia Sotomayor as the nation's first Hispanic Supreme Court justice on Tuesday, praising her as "an inspiring woman" with both the intellect and compassion to interpret the Constitution wisely.

Obama said Sotomayor has more experience as a judge than any current member of the high court had when nominated, adding she has earned the "respect of colleagues on the bench," the admiration of lawyers who appear in her court and "the adoration of her clerks."

"She has never forgotten where she began," said Obama, who praised Sotomayor for her "wisdom accumulated from an inspiring life's journey."

Sotomayor said she was "deeply moved" by her nomination. "My heart today is bursting with gratitude."

She said she hopes to be seen as an "ordinary person who has been blessed with extraordinary opportunities."

Now, of course, we can expect to hear much wailing and gnashing of teeth from the right about Obama's selection process. We especially will be hearing what a "crazy Latina" Sotomayor is -- because that's what they've already been trotting out.

Amanda Terkel at Think Progress has the rundown of the right-wing talking points.

The smearing of Sonia Sotomayor begins: UPDATED

It didn't take long for The New Republic's Jeffrey Rosen to attack Sonia Sotomayor by using anonymous sources throughout his piece. And don't you just love how the whole tone of the piece is about what a crazy, hot-tempered Latina she is? Nothing like trading in racial stereotypes to smear someone. (That's the subtext of the Morning Joe segment above, too.)

Of course, it's not just Rosen: Think Progress reports it's coming from all the good Villagers.

Glenn Greenwald does a thorough debunking of the smears and also includes his own personal experiences with Sonia to add some real context to the type of person she is.

Jeffrey Rosen's New Republic smear of Sonia Sotomayor's intellect and character -- based almost exclusively on anonymous, gossiping "sources" -- is such a model of shoddy, irresponsible, and (ironically enough) intellectually shallow "journalism" that it ought to be studied carefully. Standing alone, it reveals quite a bit about anonymity-dependent "reporting" generally, The New Republic specifically, and how much of our political discourse is conducted. Most of the gaping flaws in Rosen's piece have been fully highlighted by others.

While most of those criticisms have focused on Rosen's horrendous use of anonymous sources -- one of the most apt reactions to Rosen's piece comes, appropriately enough, in the form of well-earned derision from Wonkette -- I highly recommend this post from Law Professor Darren Hutchinson...

It's really quite sad when Rosen ends his own piece like this:

I haven’t read enough of Sotomayor’s opinions to have a confident sense of them, nor have I talked to enough of Sotomayor’s detractors and supporters, to get a fully balanced picture of her strengths. It’s possible that the former clerks and former prosecutors I talked to have an incomplete picture of her abilities.

Why didn't he just start his piece with this part and then say he'd get back to us? You know, it would be helpful if he was going to preview Sonya Sotomayor to have a more "complete picture," don't you think? Yeah, it's so much easier to smear her character by hanging out at the water cooler than actually do some research.

Mayor Bloomberg: Opposes Judge Roberts

Mayor Bloomberg, breaking with President George W. Bush and other Republicans, said today he opposes Senate confirmation of John Roberts to be the U.S.’s chief justice because the judge declined to detail his views on abortion rights. Bloomberg, who is running for re-election, said in a statement that while Roberts demonstrated a “deep intellect and understanding of the law” during Senate confirmation hearings, “I am unconvinced that Judge Roberts accepts the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling as settled law.” ...read on

It seems that Judge Roberts has wooed some Democrats, but not this Republican.

Making excuses for Rove

It's nice to see Republicans weigh in on the side of sanity instead of the knee-jerk WHA's ( White House Apologists and the sound a baby makes when crying). Read Trevino's full post. You might not agree with everything in it, but he makes really valid points.

RedState.org: The remarkable thing about the excuse-making for Karl Rove is how intellectually dishonest so much of it is.

Yep, you read that right. Read on.

Andrew Sullivan: ...Except that Rove is running an administration that is running a vital war. With that kind of power should come a tiny bit more responsibility. Michael Totten: "So there it is. Liberals deliberately hope to put our troops in greater danger, according to Rove. In other words, Liberals=Traitors. Anyone who has liberal friends and family members ought to know exactly how rotten and despicable and indefensible that statement is."

Jeff Jarvis: "Yes, Karl Rove is an ass. But you didn't need me to tell you that. This liberal wasn't calling for therapy. This liberal was calling for bombs." Tacitus: "The remarkable thing about the excuse-making for Karl Rove is how intellectually dishonest so much of it is." John Cole: "Rove smear of all liberals "
