The rainbow-hued Pride flag will fly at city hall throughout the Winter Olympics, after Mayor Rob Ford lost his bid to remove it from city hall’s rooftop on Friday.

Ford told reporters he didn’t agree with complying with the request by The 519 Church Street Community Centre to express solidarity with gay athletes and the LGBTQ community in Russia.

“This about the Olympics, this about being patriotic to your country,” Ford said.

His objections quickly brought accusations of homophobia.

“I think he’s clearly demonstrating that he is homophobic, that he is bigoted,” said Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam, an openly gay member of council.

“There’s video recordings of him saying homophobic and bigoted things,” Wong-Tam said. “But I’m very pleased to say that we have the full support of the deputy mayor.”

Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly told reporters separately that flying the flag was a “very Canadian thing to do.”
