Released on this day, November 22nd, in 1968 The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society was praised by many in the music press at the time. The record failed to sell well though.

Over the years it has become the band's best selling album and has been declared not only as one of the high points for the band but also their definitive classic. For instance, Pete Townshend once said in a interview that "Village Green Preservation Society was Ray's (Davies) masterwork. It's his Sgt. Pepper, it's what makes him the definitive pop poet laureate."
