Katie Britt’s melodramatic “Mom in the kitchen” response to Biden’s fiery State of the Union address was so terrible, even Republicans torched it.
Our Karoli Kuns has already pointed out some of Britt’s laughable deceit. Thanks to journalist Jonathan M. Katz, Britt’s MAGA-friendly immigrant anecdote has been exposed as another not-so-funny load of BS.
Ignoring the fact that she voted against the tough border bill she helped negotiate after Donald Trump told her to nix it, Britt said this in an effort to fearmonger about and blame President Joe Biden for problems at the border:
When I first took office, I did something different. I traveled to the Del Rio sector of Texas, where I spoke to a woman who shared her story with me. She had been sex trafficked by the cartels starting at age 12. She told me not just that she was raped every day, but how many times a day she was raped.
The cartels put her on a mattress in a shoebox of a room, and they sent men through that door, over and over again, for hours and hours on end.
We wouldn’t be OK with this happening in a third-world country. This is the United States of America, and it’s past time we start acting like it.
Britt’s hammy “I’m about to start sobbing” deliverance deserves the late-night mockery it will surely get. But it’s worse than that. The whole story was a dishonest smokescreen.
Katz said he immediately had questions about this tale. Britt made it sound as though the sexual assault had continued until very recently. But he clearly demonstrated that the victim’s rapes occurred in Mexico, nowhere near the border, sometime between 2004 and 2008, when Joe Biden was neither president nor vice president.
He noted that Britt has told the same story “over and over and over again" since taking the trip in January, 2023. And Britt made it seem as though the woman had been confiding in her about actions that had taken place on or near the Mexico border, during Joe Biden’s presidency.
In fact, the woman is an activist. She testified to Congress about her experiences in 2015, Katz noted.
“It goes beyond misleading,” Katz added. He pointed out that Britt had said, “We wouldn’t accept this happening in a third-world country,” strongly implying the victim had been horrifically sexually assaulted in the U.S. But the events did happen in a third-world country, not in the U.S., and while Republican George Bush was the president.
Katz also pointed out that the point of the anecdote was to suggest that Mexican immigrants currently coming into the country are rapists (sound familiar?) when Britt almost surely knew, given the woman’s age when they met, that her sexual assaults had happened long before.
