At a time when Americans are sick of Trumpflation and his stupid, needless war in Iran, Republicans apparently thought they could boost their midterm chances by trying to turn President Election Saboteur and Classified Documents Stealer into a big victim of former special counsel Jack Smith.

In a despicable hearing designed to smear Smith, Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-MO) stood out a especially despicable.

Even if Schmitt had his facts right, his "gotcha" was hardly what Schmitt tried to make it out to be. Someone on his staff found text messages about Smith's seating at a basketball game that Schmitt tried to pass off as proof that Smith had been colluding with Atlanta’s anti-Trump prosecutor, Fani Willis.

“Did you go to an NBA game between the Golden State Warriors and the Atlanta Hawks on February 3, 2024?” Schmitt asked, all but grinning like a cat about to swallow a canary.

Clearly, Smith had no idea what Schmitt was talking about.

“Let me just give you a little context,” Schmitt sneered. “The day before Fani Willis came clean with her affair with the prosecutor [Nathan Wade], you know, the Atlanta prosecutor that was also trying to get Trump. The next day, were you in Atlanta? … Did you ever meet Nathan Wade or Fani Willis in your time in your time as special counsel?”

Smith said no, he had not.

Schmitt came in for what he thought would be the proverbial kill: “What would you say if I had a series of text messages from your team that said you were in Atlanta at a Warrior/Hawks game on February 3rd, 2024, the day after Willis and Wade announced their affair?” Schmitt “asked.”

For extra maliciousness, Schmitt added, “I don't think you know that we have this stuff, so I'll give you a second to process it, so you don't, you know, perjure yourself.”

Schmitt’s staffer briefly held up a large poster board showing text messages about where Smith was seated next to large photos of Willis and Wade.

“Well, I think you've already sufficiently answered,” Schmitt continued. “I think you've already perjured yourself.”

But that wasn’t enough smearing on behalf of President P***y Grabber. As he closed his questioning, Schmitt likened Smith to the chief of secret police under Stalin and accused him of damaging trust and faith in our system. “You have weaponized the Department of Justice against political enemies to an extent that has never happened in the history of this country. You will go down as a total dirtbag.”

Unfortunately for Schmitt, Sen. Amy Klobuchar quickly revealed him as the real dirtbag.

It took Klobuchar very little time to demonstrate that the 2024 basketball game Smith attended was the Iowa Hawkeyes playing University of Maryland, not the Atlanta Hawks in Atlanta.

“I think that people should have their facts straight before they accuse someone of being a dirtbag,” she said pointedly.

If you thought Schmitt was going to acknowledge his mistake and apologize, think again. “I stand by that statement,” he said huffily. Later, he tried to defend his massive flub by telling reporters, “I asked him if he was in Atlanta. He said he’s in Maryland. Maybe he’s telling the truth. Maybe he’s not. He’s lied before.”

Sorry Senator Schitt, I mean Schmitt, but there’s video that proves you wrong again.

A phenomenal moment in the Senate.

Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., claims he has evidence Jack Smith went to a HAWKS game in Atlanta.

Smith denies it.

Schmitt declares he has busted Jack Smith for perjury.

Smith, vexed, says he went to HAWKEYES game in Maryland.
