(The Amazing Brenda Holloway!)

Continuing from the Hollywood Bowl concert of April 29,1967 (Buffalo Springfield was the opening act - see last week's entry)Part 2 features Brenda Holloway in a short, sweet and red hot performance. Listening to these tapes again I'm reminded how going to a concert (or a nightclub) was really like getting an education in music. Oddly, it was also that way with radio. Nothing got pigeonholed into a narrow format - everything was pretty much up for grabs and the upshot was you got a well rounded knowledge of what was happening in popular culture. The general consensus of opinion was, there were only two kinds of music - good music, and bad music.

It probably wouldn't occur to anyone today to match up a band like Buffalo Springfield with a consummate soul artist like Brenda Holloway, but at the time it worked and our record collections reflected that.

Brenda Holloways set (all 8 minutes of it) is crammed with medleys and hit singles. Starting off with a medley of "Happy Together" and "Sunny" and ending up with "Every Little Bit Hurts". She's brilliant throughout.

And on top of all that, The Seeds followed her (maybe next week if I can get the sound decent).
