Jr. Walker - proved that honking, wailing sax had soul.

Something familiar on a Saturday night - a Motown instrumental anthem. Jr. Walker & the All-Stars (I'm A) Roadrunner from 1966. Huge on both the pop and R&B charts. Jr. Walker had a string of hits throughout the 60's and 70's. Where the late 1940's and early1950's was almost the exclusive property of honking, wailing sax in the Jump Blues department, Jr. Walker turned it around and gave it soul.

There is nothing rare or obscure about this track, it's been practically required listening the last 40 or so years. I would venture to guess it's in almost every semi-serious record collection that has anything remotely to do with the 60's.

And it really couldn't be Saturday Night without Jr.Walker anyway - so you're headin' up the right street, familiar or not.
