At the Southern Republican Leadership Conference, our old buddy Man-on-Dog-Rick Santorum tried to explain what's got the Republican based so whipped up these days. After admitting that it can't be about spending since his party was guilty of busting the bank as well, he attempts to explain it away as anger over "a change as who we are as America is being threatened". And what does he think exactly is being threatened?

Apparently our Christian President wants to take us away from being a Judeo-Christian nation as the founders envisioned. I'm not quite sure how since he didn't exactly explain that here. How's that pandering to these types working out for you Mr. President?

It's bad enough transcribing this rubbish. I'll leave it to the commenters to dissect it and you don't even have to listen to him as I did to do it. Have at him folks. Rebutting this nonsense is too exhausting and I'm not a Constitutional scholar.

That said I would imagine the Santorums of the world were the very types some of our founders were worried about when they made sure we had separation of church and state. These people want to inject their religious beliefs into our government and atheists and other religious beliefs that don't fit in with theirs be damned.

He's also full of crap about what's got their base so whipped up. They are afraid of our country changing alright, changing from white people and Christians no longer being a majority and "the other" making its way into our ruling class, specifically into the office of the president. They're mad because they lost the last two elections. And the Republican Party is pumping up those fears to keep them afraid as Santorum does here. The only freedom Santorum and his ilk are giving the masses who buy into his bullshit is the right to stay poor while they do their best to keep the working class fighting among themselves over wedge issues like abortion.

Transcript below the fold.

Santorum: America is an idea, based on founding documents. Now I know we hear a lot about founding documents but I'm talking about different founding documents. The founding documents upon which our founding documents were based and that's the Jedeo-Christian ethics that is the base... We are a people of western civilization founded upon the Bible. We believe in the dignity of every human person. Why? Because we are created in the image of god. We believe in the ability, the collective ability of free and virtuous people to do more for our society than a benevolent authoritarian government in bestoying rights upon us.

We believe... we believe in free markets, free enterprise, we believe in democratic capitalism. Why? Because we believe in the power of the individual. We believe that families are the basic unit of society, not government. That families are responsible for educating and cultivating character in our children, not our schools. That it's the family and the schools are there to help families and not to replace families.

We believe... we believe in the things that we are taught from the very earliest times in our lives and those are the principles on which our country is based. We believe in a Constitution that's based on those Judeo-Christian ethics. That there is a truth and that there are rights that we have, god gave them to us and the government's job is simply to protect those rights, not to give us new and creative ones.

If you look at the... you hear a talking about Barack Obama wanted to make us into Europe. Look at the two constitutions. Our Constitution and our founding documents talk about a creator and talk about these rights endowed by god. Their constitution does not even mention their heritage of Christendom. They make no… they are a completely secular country. They are a country that government is the diviner of rights.

And so when I say what is at stake in this election is the vision of who we are as Americans. It’s our aspirations that people are worried about. It’s who… look, America has never lived up to our aspirations. Oh we’ve tried but we fail. Why? Because we’re human. We fail, we fall, but the reason people come to this country is not so much of who we are but who we want to be.

And Barack Obama wants to change who we want to be. He wants to change the vision of America that our founders have engrained and our generations before us have engrained in all of us. That’s why Americans are unsettled, because they see something bigger than just more of the same Washington stuff. It’s a bigger and broader vision that has just gotten people to erupt out of their chairs and say “No”. We are going to fight for America. We are going to fight for the Jedeo-Christian ethic. We’re going to fight for our founding documents and we will win in November.
