Al Gore's Son Arrested For Drug Possession

While it's certainly a shame for the family (and frankly, I'd rather not examine stupid choices made by 20 year olds, because truly, how many of us would hold up to the scrutiny?), the thing that will be more interesting to me is how much airtime the complicit media will give to this story that they didn't give to Noelle Bush or Jenna and Barbara's antics.  Not in a Republican "...they did it too" kind of way, but just why Gore's son would be any more newsworthy than a Bush daughter.

Guardian UK:

The good news for Al Gore was that when his son was stopped by the police yesterday morning he was driving an environmentally friendly car, a hybrid Toyota Prius. The bad news was that Al Gore Jr was arrested on suspicion of possessing cannabis and drugs for which he apparently had no prescription.

Aren’t drugs necessary if you are to spend time negotiating southern California freeways?

As bad as this story might sound, I'll wager that he wouldn't be asked to leave the country of Argentina if he took a trip there.

Here is a fun fact. The total number of people arrested in 2005 for simple possesion of marijuana was 696,074. Can anyone think of a better way to spend our tax dollars?

Jerry's picture

Sounds like me and him could hang.

Cantor de Mambo's picture

"Can anyone think of a better way to spend our tax dollars?"

True, we could be spending it on a senseless war in Iraq.

"In 2004, 44.2 percent of the 1,745,712 total arrests in the US for drug abuse violations were for marijuana -- a total of 771,605. Of those, 684,319 people were arrested for possession alone. By contrast in 2000, a total of 734,497 Americans were arrested for marijuana offenses, of which 646,042 were for possession alone."

At least it wasn't demonic possession.

I can't believe he got up to 100 mph on LA freeways. I wonder what kind of mileage the Prius gets at those speeds...

GWB's picture

Obviously he's running with the wrong crowd.

He should be hangin out with the Bush girls.

And this is newsworthy how?? Oh yes, Gore's kid. But the MSM didn't really have much to say when The Dick shot an old man in the friggin' face with a shotgun.

KN Sato's picture

As much as I can’t stand the Bushes, let's be real. Jenna and Barbara’s offenses weren't anywhere near as serious as Al III’s. If THEY had been busted for DUI, pot and prescription drugs, it would have been very big news. And let's not trivialize the offense. Going 100mph under the influence is a VERY dangerous act. It’s hard to believe someone who almost got killed by a car would drive so recklessly and risk hurting or killing himself or someone else.

Andy's picture

Why is this less of a news story than the Bush's daughters?

Because Bush's daughters were underage and Gore's son is an adult (and in theory responsible for his own actions). But the MSM won't mention that.

miss_kitty's picture

So the fact that the Dick (Cheney) has two or so DWIs and Jenna and not Jenna's Dad has a DUI history has slipped under your radar? or are we only comparing the kids, who have nothing to do with anything?

Lefty Lucy's picture

I don't believe it was a DUI. He had drugs in the car and he was speeding, but I have not heard that he was driving under the influence.

Thing Fish's picture

San Diego freeway is pretty empty at 2 in the morning. And southbound around Crown Valley Parkway is going down hill and its a fairly straight section. It wouldn't take too much effort to do 100 mph. Just surprised a Prius could hit those speeds. (Read that top speed is supposed to be 105 with gas an electric motor going.)

Space Coyote's picture

The interesting thing is how CNN decided to spin this. Very subtle, but they said that he was "driving a Prius at 100 miles per hour down a California freeway."

It's subtle, I know, but... why did they have to say "Prius"?

Well, everyone knows that only liberal eco-terrorists drive hybrid cars. And we're talking about the son of Mr. Eco-Terrorist himself.

The subtle message is environmentalists are batshit crazy and on drugs and out of control. You may think I'm really reaching here, but wouldn't you have written, "he was driving at 100mph down a california freeway?" What the hell does the brand and make of car have to do with the story?

Space Coyote, I think you're searching on this one. The news often mentions what kind of car a celebrity is driving when they are in accidents or are pulled over. CNN mentioned that Paris Hilton got her her parents' Escalade and that Lindsay Lohan had crashed her Mercedes. Besides, if anything, it was a good thing to show that the Gore family is at least practicing what they preach.

Jeb's daughter, Noelle Bush, has been arrested for attempting to fraudulently obtain a prescription. As a result of her arrest, Bush was ordered by a judge to attend a rehabilitation program at the Center for Drug-Free Living in Orlando, Florida. During her time at the facility, Bush was found in contempt of court twice — once after being accused of stealing prescription pills from a nurse's office and once after she was caught with crack cocaine.

I don't think much will come of this. Anyone who is a parent has got to sympathize with a kid that embarrasses the hell out of you once or twice. Yes it would be, were he charged with OUI - but the arresting officers said he wasn't impaired, just in possession of marijuana and prescription drugs for which he had no prescription.

This does not minimize the speeding or the possession charges - just striving for accuracy.

Dubya had a DWI in Maine. The lawyer who revealed it was recently arrested. He did something stupid, but not THAT stupid. The DA refused to prosecute. I wonder if Mommy or Poppy had anything to do with that. After reading the connections between Libby, Rich Guiliani and Bill Clinton - nothing would surprise me.

This seems to be getting much more attention than deserved--if he was under the influence, that will come out in any legal proceeding...Speeding is still serious, but not deserving of national attention..if all the drugs were, in fact, his--he would seem to have a problem, which his father says is being addressed. That should be the end of it. Period.

Maybe Tipper Gore, who headed that hateful and pro-censorship record labeling scam a few decades ago, which was supposedly PRO FAMILY, should have spent a little LESS time with the hateful laws, and a little MORE time trying to be a good parent herself. Shame on her. She failed as a parent. She's got a DRUGGIE for a son. Another spoilt brat gone wrong.

Go check out CNN for an EXCELLENT example of Liberal bias in the media...

They have an article about how prescription drugs are becoming the new "pot", or drug of choice, on college campuses. Good topic for an article. However, it starts out like this:

The prescription drugs allegedly found in Al Gore III's possession Wednesday are favorites among young people, according to drug abuse experts, who say prescription drugs may soon overtake street drugs in popularity.

WTF is that? Liberal bias?? Whatever. If there was one, it'd be more like: "A man shot his wife today while he was high on cocaine, like President Bush use to snort." -or- "A man killed two babies while driving drunk, something the President use to do."

This guy is 24 years old. He's a little long in the tooth for this kind of adolescent risk-taking behavior. Weirdly, he let go of his father's hand at age 6 and ran out into traffic (where he was promptly hit by a car and nearly killed). My kids might have tried to do something like that at age 3, but not by age 6. Sounds like he has a lifelong affinity for dangerous behavior. If you were nearly killed by a car when you were 6 years old, wouldn't you be more a bit careful behind the wheel?

Damn straight, Eggman. I frankly don't remember my age 6 accomplishments, but I was working on my first (of many) thesis by age 7. Any 6 year old who can't be trusted to exercise simple common sense is on a fast track to extinction.

What an odd coincidence by the media leaks about (a) Gore's son's DUI which hurts
Gore if he enters the primary and helps Sen. Obama, the DLC candidate, (b) John Edwards's $1,200 hair cut, again helps Sen. Obama to get the anti-Hillary vote, (c) negative You Tube ad against Hillary Clinton from Obama's camp, Obama claiming he has no clue. which helps Obama.

Too many coincidences and one person who benefits.

Get real, LongTooth and Eggman! At 6 years old, most boys aren't reckless? It is somehow unusual for a 6-year-old boy to takes risks? Get real! Boys (up until about age 25) take risks. If you don't, good for you -- but you are unusual. I have one daughter and 2 sons. The girl was always careful -- the boys were the opposite. It's their gender, Einstein.

I don't remember ever being careful when I was 6 years old. Matter of fact, I don't remember using much care about pretty much everything until just a few years ago. I know others who live on the edge and are older than I am but they aren't evil people. Certainly not like those running our government now. But using marijuana cannot be condoned! LongTooth's picture

Shell5960(ec): No, you get real!

As alluded to above, my first (of many) thesis at the age of 7 dealt with statistical probabilities, vis a vis playing dodge-ball (you can look it up in Harvard's archives; 1962).

I reiterate- if young Mr. Gore was foolish enough to run wild in traffic at the age of six, it statistically explains why he today finds himself in his current jam with Johnny Law.

Eggmann's picture

I never said anyone was "evil". I made a plain statement. This is a young man who is prone to risk-taking behavior. I never drove 100 mph with drugs in my car at any age. If I'd been in hospital rehab for months as a child after being hit by a car, I would think more than twice about going 100 mph in case I should endanger some other 6 year old out there in his parents car.

When one is wealthy and the child of powerful parents, what punishment awaits you that would make you stop risk-taking behavior? Nothing, really. Drug rehab is a joke when your parents can pay for the most exclusive rehab places. Just ask Noel Bush. Or any of the Kennedys. And the law isn't going to stop you. Just look at George W Bush. If I were the Gores, I would use Dubya as an example. "If your conscience doesn't kick in to stop this behavior, that is what you will wind up being. A real asshole incapable of learning a lesson."

BTW, in my household, the girl is the bigger risk-taker. It's just her personality, not her gender. My son is very careful. I suppose I could claim it is his race (he is a different race than we are), but that would be making a blanket statement. I don't think my kids behave the way they do because of race or because of gender. They behave the way they do because of personality traits and because of the way they were brought up. Part of the way they are brought up is socio-economical. When non-wealthy people mess up, it can cost the family a hell of a lot in consequences.

I wonder what finally would get a young man or young woman of wealth, privilege and power to stop dangerous, thoughtless behavior? Most of us are threatened with economic loss and loss of social standing if we keep getting caught.

It is said that drunk drivers will go right through a stop sign while pot smokers will patiently wait for it to turn green.

By the way, under the influence of marijuana, you do NOT drive 100 mph. What a loon for suggesting that. LOLOLOL

Ha Ha Spoken like a hearty fellow, well met, I presume..That just goes to show how foolish the entire argument about the supposed "Ravages of A Pot-Head," leads!! ANYONE with just a passing familiarity with the effacy of cannabinoid research and relaxation knows full well that the LAST thought on one's mind when pursuing any form of research, is driving ANYWHERE!!! Not unless the supply of research material is depleted, and that problem is usually solved by a phone call, and arrangements are made for delivery. Why waste the time, money, effort, and resultant clashes with the establishment? Seems that you're defeating the purpose of your research, which was to relax, right?

Also, with the propensity for relaxing to the point that one often has a tendency to overlook certain things like, "WTF?? What was I just trying to remember that I had forgotten to remember, when I was wondering where did I put that box of Oreo's, when I went out to the corner store for the dip for the Doritos, that I didn't think to get when I was there buying the Doritos then?" Or, the amazing adventures at 2:45 AM, when you finding yourself pushing a overladen shopping cart full of junk food through the aisles of the Neighborhood Walmart, totally fascinated with all the different varieties of smoked oysters, ethnic spices, and every little thing that catches your eye, until you wander to the check-out counter, suddenly realizing that you only left the house just to get the toilet paper you didn't remember to buy from the day before.........

Oh well, the thouht police will try and make such a big deal of this, when this is truly a matter that the FAMILY of young Mr Gore is dealing with, as all good families do. No matter the public image of his father, this is one young man's decision, bad though it may be, nevertheless, HE made the mistake, NOT his parents, or other family members. And his father made the ONLY statement that needs to be made, namely that he's relieved that his son is receiving proper treatment.

Why can't the press/populace remain content with just acknowledging that this is a mistake by this young man, even though he's the son of a person of prominence, his status has no bearing on the actual deed. Why hold his family up to ridicule, in essence, ripping away at this family, because of who his father is? If you want to fight Al Gore, at the very least, have the decency to attack the man on issues that have some merit, not the senseless, hate-filled, vitriolic statements that carry no value. Sound and fury, noise, all this shows that you can say things in a negative light, all the while, parsing words to deny responsibility and charges of libel and slander.

Let it be said here, and in every means of public communication, that there is a group of citizens that see what is taking place, know what the truth is, and are determined to tell this truth to everyone in this country, and around the world!! We DENY this government the ablity to lie to us, and remain silent any longer!! If we've caused Dave Broder to have a "Hissy Fit" recently, let's try and give the ENTIRE MSM a coronary!! Let's take the fight to them in spades!! Let them see the true face of America, stand and fight back from right here, behind our keyboards!!

This is all about some pot? I mean, come on.

Yey rah for the Gore's. Maybe this can be the door opener. legalize POT.
Rediculous that the Feds have gone crazy over pot. I've smoked since 1969.
It's not what it's cracked up to be. Does'nt lead to other things. People are just nutzoes over fear of pot. It's really nothing and for it to be illegal is laughable.
I'm just very sorry for the one who gave up family and lives to go go to jail.
Senators have smoked it on the steps of the capitol building. It's been smoke in the WH. I say fire up and don't bogart.

what's wrong with weed and limbaugh candy?

I Really Don't Care About Al Gore's Son Smoking Weed

This kind of nosy and personal reporting leads to smelling sheets to look into someone's sex life. What part of "a family matter" does American not understand. This is sloppy journalism and can only be used to create an illusion you are better then the person who you think has did something beyond being a human being.

This shit serves zero purpose, and, would you believe the media tried to use it to diminish the momentum from Gore's environmental drive? Well, guess, what? It did not work, and in three words, noted above, he zapped their stupid attempt. Go Al Gore.

didn't C&L run pics of some Bushes in college drunk and hanging out with crossdressers?

There are lots of pictures of Bushes with a crossdresser: George H.W. Bush's wife.

That was preston boosh, remember the dill-weed who would lecture us about the Dubai buying of our harbors was a good thing?

I wouldn't consider being busted for a little bit of weed "a shame for the family"! I'd call it a shame for the nation that criminalizes the weed.

Good man! I keep telling people our four-door hatchback Prius maneuvers very adequately at freeway speed. This is just the sort of publicity environmentalism needs. Now if I could get my wife to put on the "My Prius accelerates faster than your SUV" bumpersticker I got her.
