New Intel Report: Al Qaeda Has Returned Stronger Than Ever

U.S. intelligence analysts have concluded al-Qaida has rebuilt its operating capability to a level not seen since just before the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, The Associated Press has learned.
Counterterrorism analysts produced the document, titled "Al-Qaida better positioned to strike the West." The document focuses on the terror group's safe haven in Pakistan and makes a range of observations about the threat posed to the United States and its allies, officials said.
Al-Qaida is "considerably operationally stronger than a year ago" and has "regrouped to an extent not seen since 2001," the official said, paraphrasing the report's conclusions. "They are showing greater and greater ability to plan attacks in Europe and the United States."
The group also has created "the most robust training program since 2001, with an interest in using European operatives," the official quoted the report as saying.
How can anyone argue with a straight face anymore that this war is beneficial to America's security? We have created an entire new generation of Islamic extremists and a failed state for them for fester in, we have decimated the readiness and moral of our armed forces, we have squandered hundreds of billions of dollars and our moral standing, we have strengthened Iran by allowing them to gain influence in Iraq, and we still haven't caught the people responsible for the attack that supposedly justifies it all. What kind of bizarre world are we living in?

I bet you could superimpose the "al qaeda is stronger" messages and "increased risk" articles directly over Bush's approval rating and find a correlation. They've been wanting to attack us more than ever since Iraq, it is just that the leaks tend to come out when the White House most needs it. They haven't done anything to prevent more attacks, and have certainly increased the likelihood with the "beat the beehive" policy towards the Middle East.
It's coming, just like they want it to. Let's all get our RealID's and prepare for the police state.
There isn't a such thing as al-qaeda, or the boogeyman either for that matter.
So why do the right-wing knuckle-draggers not see this as total failure by Bush? They'll choose to see this as vindication of Bush's insanity, that we need to 'Stay the course' or some other stupidity, anything but what it truly is. We are going to be successfully attacked again due to the Republican Party not caring one bit about the health and welfare of our nation and the Republican traitors will then rejoice at being able to inflict more harm on our country in the name of fighting terrorism.

a) create a Fascist government with little resistance.
b) Demonize a people (Iraqis and Iranians) and make them crazy by killing them by the hundred of thousands and plunge them into desperation by also destroying their livlihoods.
c) you can then take over their oil resources as your own.
d) you can pretend a dead man is alive (Osama)
e) and use false emergency to subjugate and ensnare your own countrymen.

I'm in agreement with the folks that says this is a scare tactic to improve Bush by pretending to protect us. One of the problems is the lack of middle-east specialists at the very top. They act as if this is Iwo Jima, 1945. Condi Rice spent her life studying the soviets and Bush and the rest only know what little they do know from partying with the ultra-rich oil leaders.

Hate to sound pessimistic, but I'm thinking the damage is done as far as Jihadi recruitment goes. Whether we stay in Iraq or go, we've stirred up a shitstorm that won't die down for decades. Either way, the mullahs will look at the mess and point the finger at the US. And rightly so.

So what happens if all of the US troops leave Iraq? We should not have invaded. The country was lied to. I agree. But now what? If US troops are pulled out entirely at this stage, doesn't Iraq become an even more vicious civil war with far greater Iraqi casualties? (Not to mention the possibility of invasion by neighbours and war spreading across the Middle East).
One possible response is "fuck 'em, they ain't us". Another is to accept that the US may have some responsibility to fix the mess we caused. Another administration could conceivable go to the UN, cap in hand, and ask for international assistance. This administration cannot afford to admit that it screwed up and probably would not get any assistance from the UN anyway (after deliberately spitting on the UN and international opinion).

This was created by the American and Pakistani gov in the 80's to fight Russia but it was the Taliban. Al queda was just a name they made up in the late 90's. The US has been screwing around in the middle east since the early 50's when the CIA orchestrated the 1953 coup in Iran.

I don't know what we can do -- all of us who are so distressed -- but talk about it.
There are thousands of organizations asking for our money, our effort, but I have the sense that unless we can get something going in Congress -- or in the "media" -- we'll never make a difference.
We, the people, need to do something because our representative government is in shambles, our President would be king, our Vice President is the reincarnation of Machievelli, our judiciary has been repeatedly raped and our Congress has the spine of a jellyfish.
