The bad taste of smiling happily next to a sign that likens our top tier Dem candidates to the head of al Qaeda didn't sit well with many. Case in point: Jerid at BuckeyeState:
I don't understand how someone can compare any American to Osama Bin Laden, but pundits are still willing to prey on the emotions that everyone that lived through 9/11 feel, invoking images of the most hate man in America to describe the political opposition. It's a cheap, divisive, whorish move to make. It represents the worst of the politics of hate. It's a move that I expect presidential candidates of all parties to be above. But Mitt Romney is not.
So I asked him about it on Sunday at a townhall meeting in Exeter, NH. In the video, I'm angry. I still am right now. Please, watch this video.

You find yourself almost wishing he will be the Rethug guy, just so the Dem (whomever it is) can him his head on a platter. But then, you could have felt that way in 2000 with W. So, careful what you wish for!

I'm a little confused about this whole 'controversy'. How does being against both Osama and Obama liken the two? If whoever made the sign had been grammatically correct and included a comma after the word Osama, would you still be 'outraged'?
This ultra-sensitivity and just jumping at any chance to seem like a victim very much hurts the political landscape in this country, when republicans do it, as well as when democrats do it.

Holding up a sign that encompassed "osama, obama and chelsea's momma', there is no excuse for holding onto that sign with such a message in a room of people. Unless an attractive woman is holding it. Mitt just got hooked - in more ways than one. Palfrey? Hmmmmm. Let's check the list in due time.
So if animal abuser Mitt gets pissed off because someone holds up a sign with a picture of a dog tide to the top of a car for a 12 hour trip from Boston to Orlando, we can tell him to "lighten up"

I work with a person who is so shallow minded that she said she would never vote for Obama because his name sounds too much like Osama. I didn't dare tell her his middle name is Hussein. Oh, and by the way, Obama is Jr., so his father was named long before any of these wackos were even around.

Look at this hack job CNN did of covering this story. They just happen not to show the picture of Romney HOLDING THE SIGN. The whole article is written in a way that makes no mention that he actually held the sign. Ridiculous.

Sorry, but if I'm running for president and someone hands me a sign to pose with, I like to think I would have at least the slightest presence of mind to look at it and decide whether or not it is something with which I'd like to be associated. We have had almost two terms of "I'm not responsible!" Next time, let's give the job to an adult.

I don't think it's too much to expect Romney to actually have enough control over his image to read the signs he's holding when getting pictures with his supporters. He could have at least given his opinion on the subject. Romney seems like the kind of guy who would say "Well my wife has me on a strict diet" if someone asked him if he ate babies.
Amazing that Bush has set such a horrible standard yet not one Repug candidate can rise above that standard. There isn't one Repug that I'd vote for for any reason as not one Repug has even one redeeming quality.

Dizz, do the words meme, framing or subtle brainwashing/word association seem relevant at all in this scenario. Have you ever listened to the recording of Rush Limbaugh repeating "Osama, Obama, Osama, Obama" over and over? It all serves to plant a negative association in the minds of the easily influenced (ie. Fox News viewers and right wing radio listeners), and unfortanetly too many American voters are easily led. It does'nt matter if there is any truth or context to it but it seems to work. It may seem trivial but trust me it has a greater impact than most realize. Why do you think subliminal images used in films and advertising recieved so much criticism..

I once voted for a Republican. It was a protest vote. It was also a terrible mistake. So, I took the pledge - I will never again vote for a Republican for any office no matter how qualified that person is.
