Keith Olbermann covers the breaking showdown between President Bush and Congress. Can you believe that Mr. One-Full-Year-Of-My-Eight-Years-In-Office-Was-Spent-On-Vacation is complaining about Congress taking their August break instead of giving him the rubber stamp he's looking for his wiretapping program? Note the playing of the fear card. Jonathan Turley joins Keith and tries to make sense in this Bizarro World confrontation, and the complicit Congress isn't spared his scorn.
The ACLU has an action item: Tell Congress Not to Cave in to Fear
And more: Don't rush to modify FISA, Stampeding Congress. Again. (reg. req'd)

two words... Boooooooooooooo Bush!
One word...
IMPEACH!
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooh who lives in a pineapple under the sea?
Absorbant and yellow and porous is he!
:X
The million-dollar question: do the Dems have the spines to prevent the Shrub from expanding his and Gonzo's illegal powers?
Bonus question: does anyone anywhere trust Gonzo to do anything right?
let's not complain about bush taking a year off in the eight year span of his make-believe presidency. being the pretend president is hard work...especially when you have no brain.
The Senate caved again 60-28 for the gop bill.
But hey, that bone to insure kids ought to quiet those parents for awhile.
He really looks bad for a guy who takes so much vacation time.
He's even starting to look worse than Cheney. Though, admittedly, Cheney's work eithic is probably even worse than Bush's.
Come to think of it. Why are conservatives such lazy bastards?
PRINCIPLES...
Is the unilateral invasion and occupation of a sovereign nation that posed no imminent threat to the U.S. an American Principle?
Is fraudulently selling that invasion based on KNOWN false evidence, to a Joint Session of Congress (01/28/03) an American Principle?
Is indefinite detention of persons suspected and accused but not charged or tried nor found guilty an American Principle?
Is attempting to withhold Habeas Corpus Rights and Due Process from persons suspected and not charged an American Principle?
Is choosing which Treaties and Conventions to follow based on convenience an American Principle?
Is torture an American Principle?
Is warrentless wiretapping of American citizens an American Principle?
Is the rewriting of National Security Letters so as to cover what was otherwise illegally seized an American Principle?
Is the the politicization of the DoJ an American Principle?
Is signing unconstitutional bills into Law an American Principle?
Is usurping the co-equal Branches of our Government via signing statements an American Principle?
Is being involved in the outing a covert CIA agent an American Principle?
THE - NEW - AMERICAN - PRINCIPLES?
They are when good men do nothing, letting worse men institute new policies that set the groundwork for unAmerican principles to take root. Even worse is when good men accommodate the worse men and vote to enshrine these new principles into laws, theories, and other principles of being. Egregiously far worse, is when good men continue to do nothing thus codifying these new principles, inturn validating these worse men as exceptional men for their wisdom and brilliance at undermining what Real American Principles are.
So Congress,
It is times like this where facades MUST fall. What are your American Principles and how do you comport them into your Duty? You aren't supporting and defending the Constitution of the USA, when you allow and tolerate the usurpations of the Constitution of the U.S.A. and the Constitutional Laws derived from therein.
Impeach and Convict those who have perpetrated these crimes against the people.
Then - End this war!
If certain acts in violation of treaties are crimes, they are crimes whether the United States does them or whether Germany does them, and we are not prepared to lay down a rule of criminal, conduct against others which we would not be willing to have invoked against us.

If the Democrats held 100% of both houses of Congress, and Bush had an approval rating of 2%, they would still "compromise" with any demand he made. They'd still make a public display of meeting him halfway, and then they'd collapse and just give him everything he wanted.
This Congress has moved way past the realm of cowardly triangulation tactics. They're complicit.
He is doing this so when the attack on America comes he and the repubs can say see the dems caused this because they kept us from protecting America...Bush and his gang are backed into a corner and need a major distraction.
I've got a better fear card to play, the fear that once the Dem's go on vacation the Bush Crime Family will have Fredo resign so the Shrub can give a recess appointment to the next criminal the ask into the administration.
There could be a reason the Congress is being "complicit". Maybe, and that's just a maybe, they know what they're doing.
If John is at yearly kos, please ask him to address this outrage:

Geez.
no w just wants to get this done so he can go to Crawford and cut brush.. dickhead
We've all been waiting for the elected Democrats to roll back the relentless attacks that these criminals have launched on the rule of law and our constitution. I am afraid we have misjudged their fortitude and dedication to the Republic and we may, in fact, be witnessing the end of this grand experiment.
Annie, get your gun.
We have a criminal Executive, a complicit Judiciary, and a bunch of spineless cowardly assholes comprising the Legislative branch.
In other words, WE ARE TOTALLY FUCKED!!!!!
What?, What's that you say, dear?
It's Vacation time. Well, ok then.
Gotta go folks, you know what our priorities are now.
"...everyday I am reminded that our nation is still vulnerable. Everyday I am remembered about what 9-11 means to America.", stated a somber 'W' in 2003. Four years later we hear the same rhetoric spewing out from the Bush Administration. In fact, since 2001 we have been told we are facing a national security threat, be it from the "war on terror" or "axis of evil", our 'homeland' in one way or another is threatened. Our National Security is at risk. Our 'homeland' is under attack, not only by our far off enemies, but by the enemy within.

The last six years have been like a never ending bad dream.
If it's wrong, this government will do it.
And that goes for everything.
newssophisticate @ 19:
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear."
Cicero
The best part: Gonzo will oversee that program.
I watch in shock & awe as america fast-tracks its way to becoming a banana republic!
Today was the day that George Bush truly went from president to dictator, a position he’s coveted for a long time. He delivered a speech today, in which he announced his order that congress stay in session through August recess - until he gets a bill that authorizes his domestic spying program. He threatened to veto any bill that he believes is insufficient “to prevent an attack on the country.” Bush is holding the congress hostage until he gets what he wants. I’ve got no faith in the congress standing up to him. Within the next few days, congress will pass the bill that the president wants, and then adjourn for the rest of the month.
Bush said in his speech, “We’ve worked hard and in good faith with the Democrats to find a solution, but we are not going to put our national security at risk, time is short.” I wonder what the rush is… Why is time so short? Something is going to happen during the recess, and Bush absolutely knows about it. Bush needs this now because he knows that a month from now will be too late. He needs to be able to spy on Americans because he knows the “Reichstag fire” type event will be happening soon. His power grab will happen while Congress is on vacation. Without these unconstitutional dictatorial powers, he will have a much harder time in squashing the rebellion. He needs the data to be able to round up his political enemies and intern them in the camps he’s already built. I would bet even money with anyone that a major disaster happens this next month. It will be used to justify the imposition of martial law, and suspension of the Constitution, the very document Bush swore to uphold and defend. I don’t know what it will be, but I know THEY do. Live life to the fullest, because every day might be your last. We’ve got maybe a month left living the good life. Use it wisely.
You do not need this Power Mr. Bush, this is NOT WWII.
It is a criminal action that YOU are trying to turn into a WWII.
One wonders why, but politics seem the obvious answer.
Care to comment jerkoff?
I, Mr. Vacation, would like to tell you folks that unless you allow me to illegally spy on my own citizens, I will have to smite you.
Max-1 @ 9:
Well yes. They are republican principals. Didn't you know?

2) OH HELL NO!!!

Keep Fear Alive! Keep Fear Alive!
Fuck Civil Liberties!
Keep Fear Alive!
We need Fear!
We need Scope!
Fuck YOU! Fuck YOU! Fuck YOU!
Feinstein was really pathetic.
She did not understand the bill but voted for it anyway to leave.
Webb, Casey, Nelson, etc.
Only 28 voted no.
It was pathetic and Feingold was pissed.
The House can block it and they were going after Mutha.
Its up to Speaker Pelosi.
Jefferson, Madison, Franklin, come to think of it, all the founders of the Constitution are not only turning in their graves, but digging their way out.......... just so they could jump off the nearest cliff!
What does it matter what Bush says anymore? Seriously...what can be worse than his famous statement back in April of 2003 when he said "If this were a dictatorship it would be a heck of alot easier just so long as I'm the dictator" ? Bush doesn't do nuance remember?
Most of the country isn't listening to the idiot and the Democrats keep cowing to his demands. At this point I'm more pissed off at the Dems. Something tells me that with this b.s. expanded surveillance bill Harry Reid silver spoon fed to Dubya we're going to have either another terror incident because the country is so pissed off at all of the other crap going down or at least we're going to see at least 90 days of 'ooga booga booga' scaremongering.
There comes a time when you get used to the jerk pissing you off and more angry at the one enabling the jerk. I'm used to Bush being an idiot so now I'm more pissed off at his enablers...the Democrats.
Its up to Speaker Pelosi.
I'd like to say I think the House Dems won't cave like the Senate Dems did, but I can't.
Republican Light Politics
Jonathan Turley, law professor of George Washington University, spoke true of the typical Democratic response of compromising. They usually adapt a "middle of the road" approach that defeats the spirit of debate. The people get shafted by a diminished choice and a one sided options.
First thing first, Bush and his administrations broke the law by illegally use of wiretaps. This a crime not one side of a debate. It really angers me to hear those defenders on the right say "lets debate this issue." I am sure they would love to debate a crime to keep another scandal at bay. I am sure Alberto Gonzales and Bush feel relieved they avoided a possible impeachment trial.
Whoever invented "middle of the road politics" was doing what comes natural. We live in a predisposed symmetric society. It feel natural for Americans to want symmetry and balance. However, when you look at the world from the perspective of "truth is stranger than fiction," symmetry is not so natural after all, and compromises are not always in the middle.
The "middle of the road" FISA solution will hurt the Democratic Party and destroy the momentum they have gained to date. I call it the Republican Light solution and I am sure Bush will chalk up another victory at the expense of Democrats who can't live without a vacation. There is nothing more disturbing to the Democratic ear then having to swallow Republican ideology. If I wanted a moderate Republican solution, I would join the moderate wing of the Republican Party.
The Democratic strengths lie in their core values. The Democratic cannot increase their standings talking like Republicans. Barack Obama is tasting what it feels like to be working the wrong side of the fence. To show his military mind set, he sounds like the Republican candidates who, with the exception of one, would contemplate using nuclear weapons in the Middle East. That kind of thinking is distinctly Republican, and I am sure his supporters will let him know it a non supportive way.

I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it. -- Thomas Jefferson
The only real prison is fear, and the only real freedom is freedom from fear. -- Aung San Suu Kyi
Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. -- Benjamin Franklin
Harry Reid and Co are a bunch of pussies. November 2008 might have the Repubs taking back the House and Senate and occupying the White House.
Faux opinion said the House is caving too.
Geez.
Eric @ 38:
Your right, Turley was right.
There are some great clips for this blog to show how pathetic it was.
I will not watch it again .
I am all out of outrage.
Geez.
I think it is time Fiengold and some other *Decent* Dems QUIT the Dem party and became INDEPENDENTS. The Democratic Party is a miserable cowardly mess, no better than the Repugs, who's a**es they love to kiss.
The congress just dropped their pants and bent over again and let Bush have his way with them one more time.
WASHINGTON - The Senate, in a high-stakes showdown over national security, voted late Friday to temporarily give President Bush expanded authority to eavesdrop on suspected foreign terrorists without court warrants.
The House, meanwhile, rejected a Democratic version of the bill.
When are some of you going to realize that the dems are cupable and are selling us down the river just the repulbicans did the last 6 years?
Make a dictator act like a dictator.
It was comical as hell when chimpys looked like an idiot when he means (his) business. It's phony as hell.
Why don't repugs and the dems see this? chimpy and his bfs are make a fool out of the constitution and the majority of it's citizens.
They must be doing some badass shit.
repugs believe if they can't get to {M}ars the will settle for {W}ars
Guy in the back, to Bush's left, reminds me of this guy.
In substance America is a one party state. In form it is a two party Kabuki dance, a mere stage play of public delusion. A congress that votes to legitimize unconstitutional presidential power is not a congress that plans to impeach the president.
Congress will yield, because after all the dems and repubs both craven for power shameless Shylok like money grubbing corporate whores.
How does a President with his poll numbers in the toilet and his credibility along side it, continue to bully the spineless Democrats. Gonzo is a lying ,lowlife and they're going to entrust him with this program ..This is OUTRAGEOUS! I'm an Independent and I just as disgusted with the Democrats as I am with the Republicans.
Mr. Blade2 @ 45:
Unfucking believable....
Still think the Democrats are our salvation?
I don't get it either. Bush is a lame duck. He has absolutely no credibility. No one needs him or his blessing for their campaigns. If anything those running for office are staying far away.
So why give in to the idiot. I hope the Dems won't fall for his Chickenhawk rhetoric. Now the fear mongers are saying if you don't do what Bush wants something will happen.
The neo-cons and conservatives thrive on the fear factor. I've heard a Republican Congresswoman even admit it.
First, nothing (an attack) is going to happen if you publicly prophisize it, especially from this group of idiots in office. And secondly, wiretapping or torture for that matter yields very little results. And third, they don't have to come over here to attack us again. They are having a field day in Iraq and Afghanistan attacking Americans there. Every successful attack over there emboldens them more.
What yields results from investigating possible acts of terrorism are tips or leads from people embedded with a particular group.
wow: i'm Canadian and i'm starting to get scared...
i've been following the news for about 40 years and i've never seen anything like it.
i don't know nearly enough about how your government works to know whether or not the Demcrats are the complicit bastards they appear to be, or if they actually have 'a rabbit in a hat'...
all of you did a beautiful thing when you showed that Americans are capable of showing resistance: would things have gone differently if a few more seats went Democat the last election?? sure would suck if that turns out to be to be enough to enable 'the-slime-of-the-dungpit' from doing all they've done and all that they continue to do
I've never felt such a visceral hatred of my government as I do today. I don't care about Al Queda, I don't care about terrorism. I care about removing from office everyone of these F**KERS, who have declared themselves the enemies of the American people.
Its all over ...
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/huff-wires/20070803/terrorism-surveillance/
congress folded ... they should be disolved.
Pelosi, Hoyer, Reid, Emmanuel will vote against the FISA bill and lean on some subordinates to vote for it. It will pass and these creeps will have deniability. that's how they play this new game of f**king the the American people.

Duke Riley, a Brooklyn artist, built a replica of a Revolutionary War-era submarine to intercept the luxury liner, Queen Mary II, in Red Hook, Brooklyn. His voyage ended in a collision of performance art and domestic security.
Mr. Riley was detained by officers from the New York Police Department after drifting close to the Queen Mary II docked in Red Hook, Brooklyn.
The Police Department released the following statement from Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly: "A makeshift submarine discovered at about 10:30 this morning by an N.Y.P.D. fuck the senate, they passed this atrocious bill tonight.
we don't have any representatives in our congress that represent "We, the people", just bastards of what seems only one party now. maybe it's time we fulfilled our constitutional rights and removed all those in office now, elect the underdogs in all the states.
it is only a matter of time before the house of congress and the senate close down the buisness of representing the american people and start working to install george w bush as dictator for life and along with his brain dick cheny institute the new world order , the american citizens who submit to this new government will be fed as long as they hand over their children both male and female for military training and assighnment to battlefields that can assure plunder for the rich who will now be bowed to and have their wealthy asses licked every day by the commoners! seigh heil!

god, i'm so sick of these democratic pussies in congress. i mean, the whole bunch of those bastards aren't worth two dead flies. it's just disgusting. all they do is wring their prissy little hands, and choke on bush's hog while he laughs at their pathetic subpoenas and their little letters in which they threaten contempt. i've got nothing but contempt for those gutless weasel democrats and their pathetic fear of losing the next election. fuck them all!
Here is the roll call of Shame!
No Republicans voted against the bill.
The following Democrats voted for it:
Evan Bayh (Indiana);
Tom Carper (Delaware);
Bob Casey (Pennsylvania);
Kent Conrad (North Dakota);
Dianne Feinstein (California);
Daniel Inouye (Hawai‘i);
Amy Klobuchar (Minnesota);
Nancy Mary Landrieu (Louisiana);
Blanche Lincoln (Arkansas);
Claire McCaskill (Missouri);
Barbara Mikulski (Maryland);
Bill Nelson (Florida);
Ben Nelson (Nebraska);
Mark Pryor (Arkansas);
Ken Salazar (Colorado);
Jim Webb (Virginia).
Senators Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, Christopher Dodd and Barack Obama all opposed the bill, as did 23 other Democrats and Bernie Sanders, the independent from Vermont.
I keep remembering that night in Nov of last year when the dems were celebrating their victory. Man, it pisses me off. All the bullshit promises. Pelosi's ear to ear grin and goofy Rahm Emanuel dancing like a f*ckin fool. Now we're the fools.
We had a republican rubber stamp congress before, and now we have democrat rubber stamp and lame duck congress. They're breaking the laws of political science. I hope they enjoy their vacations.

Attorney General Gonzo is probably going to try and get Jefferson
to give up his seat and the rest of the state to the RNC. Gonzo is after
a lot more than Jefferson. He wants access to something else that Jefferson
has or had. Jefferson is probably as crooked and corrupt as they come.
Jefferson couldn't stop himself even though he knew Gonzo was waiting.

I'm just wondering what the hell are democrats thinking about, and just how the hell do they plan to maintain control of anything the way they are allowing this thug to just dog them.
It just makes you sick to see this kind of crap everyday and these people refuse or scared to do their jobs. They would rather stand on the floor everyday and attempt to pass legislation that is not going anywhere, then to spend that time going after these thugs.
It almost makes you wounder weather they enjoy the fruits this administration is feeding all of them.
To hell with being the majority, when you can just kick back and enjoy the game.
When I make these comments, I am not talking about all democrats for sure. There are some of them I know that are working so hard, but they cannot do it by themselves and that is for sure.
We need to make sure that all these new people running for office are not going to join up with these blue dog freaks. We need real democrats that are concerned with doing the work of the American people only and to hell with the fake name crap just to get in office in a so called red district as these people are doing to just screw up our party as we now see.
the pussy ball-less democrats in the senate caved into the bushconnazi fear mongering tonight ( friday 3 august 2007 ) yet again.
they just bent over and pulled their ass cheeks apart so that cheney could bone them yet again.
how utterly f***ing pathetic.

What you bet that the approval rate of congress will sink even lower after this?
Has anybody told these traitorous cretins of Congress the American people don't want to be spied on, The American people do not want their privacy invaded. The American people do not want a police state. The American people reserve the right to overthrow the government of the United States if it no longer represents the will of the people and constitutional remedies have been co-opted or destroyed by years of subversion by the very people who swore to uphold the Constitution. There are no remedies. The main stream media has been taken over by globalist corporations, free, fair, and honest elections have been subverted through HAVA , hacked voting machines, and money. Oversight of our elected officials has been systematically destroyed. Investigations of corruption, treason, and false flag sabotage has been squelched by a thoroughly corrupted judiciary. Whistleblowers have been gagged by intelligence agencies whose function is to disinform, and brainwash the American public and to serve their corporate rulers.
Guess what asshole politicians. We don't believe your war on terror. We believe the war on terror is in fact a war on the civil liberties of the American people for the benefit of of your corporate owners and masters.We believe the corporations that get you elected have no allegiance to this country despite their bullshit patriotic rhetoric. This makes you traitors.
The White House crusade for extra-constitutional powers is a showcase for a president who will lie and cheat his fellow citizens to get them, all with his unique flair for noxious immaturity.
Cringe. Truly painful. He talks like a vice-principal scolding a bunch of eight-year-olds.
But it will be the rare story that will mention his woeful, grating delivery. Coverage of the executive branch mostly concerns itself with ideological conflict, scandals, intrigue and legacies. Everything and everyone is liberal/conservative, left/right, Dem/GOP, American hater/American patriot. Ooh-rah.
Thus, Bush's unpopularity is attributed to perceived incompetence, scandals and gaffes, and a growing discomfort with the radical right direction Bush is taking the country.
All true. Yet, people also take stock of the candidiate as a person. Not a leader, decider, not a campaigner - just a citizen. He insults people. He talks down to them as he hands out supercilious nicknames. His work ethic is pathetic, and he's not at all ashamed to display it. Put simply: he's rude, and rude does not shove votes into a ballot box.
*Yeah, death will do that, clinical trials suggest. Talk to your doctor, and see if havoc is right for you.
John, I appreciate that you're still fighting, but the war for freedom has been lost for a very long time.
RIP America!
Games over. Congress has failed. Now we get to watch our transformation from a republic to an empire. If you thought the last 6 years was a nightmare, just wait. The next sign of the coming reich will be the recess appointments that Bush makes while Congress is away. Then expect a military strike against Iran, and the beginning of perpetual war. It's been easy to mock Bush for being a moron- which he is. But I guess he's having the last laugh.
To the democratic senators that handed over the republic to Bush, when they had the chance to save it, may you rot in hell. May your children and grandchildren be consumed by the battle, murder, and death you have enabled.
Like frightened sheep, we gave up our birthright as free Americans for the promise of security. The nation that was born of revolution, and triumphed over the greatest empire, that stopped the march of fascism in the 40's, destroyed by box cutters and 10,000 gallons of jet fuel and fear.
To those who value life and liberty and justice, may God protect you and your children from this madness.
What is wrong with America? I live in Canada, and until the current administration is brought to justice or completely relieved and the constitution is restored I refuse to cross the 49th. Your nation scares me.
"They that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." Ben F., Philadelphia.
I'd like to add that those who presume to represent The People, yet give up OUR essential liberty to purchase a little political relief, deserve not liberty, safety, their elected offices, nor vacations in August.
Thgis we do know and have known for a long time.......Our Gov't's agenda is to eventually control all the money you earn through increased taxes. Now, they want to control you with increase surveillence and unauthorized and unexplained capture/seizure and interrogation.
DEMOCRACY! Hip, Hip, Hooray! This wouldn't fly and if it did....well the USA would be there to stop it...................HYPOCRACY!! Hip, Hip, Hooray!
