Mid-Day Open Thread: Understatement of the Day
John Nichols in The Nation, via Commondreams.org:
"...in an era of mass delusion and denial on the part of leaders in both major political parties, stating the obvious can be a radical act."

I guess that's one way of getting George Bush's shit stains out of the Constitution.
Does this mean that Edwards is part of the "Axis of Evil" or "Naive". I hope he does not get labeled as an enemy combatant, and get sent to Gitmo for proposing to talk to Iran. Just trying to be funny. It's actually sad, their is a cost for what we've done in the last six years. ---------------> http://www.youpolls.com/details.asp?pid=344

Secret spy court orders Bush to respond to request for information on secret ruling
Published: Friday August 17, 2007
In an unprecedented order, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court ordered the Bush Administration to respond to a request it received last week by the American Civil Liberties Union for orders and legal papers discussing the scope of the government's authority to engage in the secret wiretapping of Americans, according to an ACLU press release late Friday.
The release follows.
According to the FISC’s order, the ACLU’s request “warrants further briefing,” and the government must respond to it by August 31. The court has said that any reply by the ACLU must be filed by September 14.
"Disclosure of these court orders and legal papers is essential to the ongoing debate about government surveillance," said Anthony D. Romero, Executive Director of the ACLU. "We desperately need greater transparency and public scrutiny. We're extremely encouraged by today's development because it means that, at long last, the government will be required to defend its contention that the orders should not be released."
The ACLU filed the request with the FISC following Congress' recent passage of the so-called "Protect America Act," a law that vastly expands the Bush administration's authority to conduct warrantless wiretapping of Americans' international phone calls and e-mails. In their aggressive push to justify passing this ill-advised legislation, the administration and members of Congress made repeated and veiled references to orders issued by the FISC earlier this year. The legislation is set to expire in six months unless it is renewed.
“These court orders relate to the circumstances in which the government should be permitted to use its profoundly intrusive surveillance powers to intercept the communications of U.S. citizens and residents,” said Jameel Jaffer, Director of the ACLU’s National Security Project. “The debate about this issue should not take place in a vacuum. It’s imperative that the public have access to basic information about what the administration has proposed and what the intelligence court has authorized.”
http://rawstory.com/news/2007/Secret_spy_court_orders_Bush_to_0817.html
The Buscheney Administration has managed to avoid legal action by keeping the names of people under surveillance secret so no legal action could be taken. It will be interesting to see what flushes out of the pipes this time.
Samson, any word on your folks?
Hey, I'm hoping that it's legal to bring up other topics under "open thread." I'm worried about Rove.
It seems to me, that this is the PERFECT time for Rove to jump ship and hop on board with the next republican candidate. He can then torpedo the others republicans the way he killed McCain during the 2000 primaries, thus clinching the loyalty of the new King. After that, he can begin his dirty tricks against the democrats, and secure himself, if not a perpetual republican majority, at least a near-perpetual spot for himself as Power Behind the Throne.
You have to know that for a guy like Rove, it's all about the power. So why would he voluntarily walk away, when there's still time on the clock? It's not like he's going to escape the *#&$-storm that's heading his way. It's hard to believe he's really tired or worn out. So why?
Has anyone else mentioned this?
Is there anything we can do to hinder him, if he DOES begin with a new candidate?
Too bad that picture is so small... I can't even see what it says
Americans Are Brainwashed @ 10:
I can only assume we're already supposed to be familiar with it.
On the brighter side - his aim is getting better.
As Nichols correctly notes, Congressman Kucinich has a tendency to point out truths which are self-evident. But, as to be expected, more Americans will probably be enthralled by Romney's looks and his square jaw and his patriotic blatherings [while overlooking the fact that Romney strapped his dog inside a crate onto the roof of his car] than to accept Kucinich's diminutive size and to recognize that Kucinich's call for peace and impeachment and a single payer government run universal health care system have a lot more credibility than the style and shallowness which envelop Romney and his campaign.
That picture says a thousand words.
Most suitably, that Cheney shot the Constitution and is now wiping his and Bush's ass with it.
PNAAC Minister @ 12:
Nah! Cheney was actually aiming at the Bill Of Rights.
“…in an era of mass delusion and denial on the part of leaders in both major political parties, stating the obvious can be a radical act.”
for example: 1. Terrorists will come in through open borders, therefore, we should follow the law and close the borders. 2. How is it a free market economy if funds are invested by governments to prop it up? 3. If the surge is working in Iraq, why all the fuss about bring back the troops right now? 4. Why are Bush's ratings going up and Congress's, down? 5. Why do credible scientists question human caused global warming?
I'm sure the list will go on...
Rasputin @ 15:
chainey may have been aiming at the Bill Of Rights, but winged Bill O' Rielly.
I posted this last night but i wanted to catch as many ppl as possible.
Please see the article "Texans to Bush: Get Off My Lawn!" by Marisa Trevino on Fire Dog Lake Aug 16.
There is a protest planned by Texans who live by the border. Seems they don't want a big fence that divides neighborhoods and separates livestock from water supplies.
No one in Washington D.C. has been listening to them so they are planning to protest starting on August 25.
A flotilla of canoes, kayaks and inner tubes plus a human chain across the int'l bridge is planned.
If you live in the west or just want a short vacation... It's a good cause and a flotilla on a hot summer day :)

Since this is an open thread, I'd like to know if anyone knows what exactly the "War Czar" has been doing. Does he ever appear in public? What's the point of having a war czar with General Petraeus and the WH writing his report. Maybe a distraction?

and make sure you regulate issues like " the Embassy " to the Cafferty File, which is find, except he's only on a couple time a day, for a couple minutes, so why isn't BLITZER making the EMBASSY a part of his speculation, discussions and meaningless blather, about the fkn polls, now Cafferty is the one speculating about China and Russia having war games and of course if CNN was a serious news company, that challenged the status quo occasionally, that would have been a great opportunity to invite on SOMEBODY, other than the typical pro war general, or even Cafferty , somebody like a JUAN COLE to explain WHY this shit is happening, that the whole world is turning against us. Nooo, we get 1 min. of ranting, that's hit.

Sampson,
I don't even know you, but i am happy for you too. :)
War By Default
The Bush administration declared war on Iran the other day when it labeled Iran's Revolutionary Guard a terrorist organization. So the logic goes: If we are in a war on terror, then by default we are now in a war with the Iranian army.
As he started building additional forces in the Iranian region, we warned this president with our outrage not to wage war with Iran without congressional approval. Congress warned him, so what does he do? Declare a default war that makes it okay for him to lunch attacks on the army of Iran. He has help. This was taken from the Washington Post the day the administration announced this action:
The above statement came from the Washington Post. Can you believe that the Post would frame this action as a response to pressure from a Democratic congress. The Democrats better not blow this opportunity to show the public they are not the same as the Republicans warmongers. Don't forget to drop your congressperson a line to tell them which side they should take on this issue.
Carl Rove quit and Tony Snow is talking of quiting. Something has outraged key personnel in this administration and the biggest cronies are running for cover. I am not buying for one second this line people are leaving the WH to further their careers. These are well educated individuals who are not on time specific dynamics concerning a job. Something is up and we will soon find out what that is.

What happened to all that bullshit about the Constitution being a "Living Document"?
It's funny that you guys only care about the Constitution when the other side is destroying it.
As Al once said: "I would look for justices of the Supreme Court who understand that our Constitution is a living and breathing document, that it was intended by our founders to be interpreted in the light of the constantly evolving experience of the American people."
So, the US is now under attack from evil arab boogiemen, and the constitution changes to reflect that.
Does anyone finally see the problem with this concept?
Joseph @ 32:
1. Yes
2. They will. I promise.
A small handful of people in congress are still decent human beings. The majority don't give a shit about you, Iran or the future of America. Or they're too stupid to.
yenehC hcaepmI @ 29:
It sounds like a great idea to me. I wish i had thought of it.
In my opinion not everyone will be willing or able to participate in such an act. However, if you can not go on strike that does not mean you can't support it. Tell your friends and post about it. Who knows? Perhaps if something can get started it will grow. The only thing the masters of war understand is money. Why not deny them some of it?

Russia and China preparing for a new cold war or WW III?
Putin orders resumption of strategic bomber flights
Fred Attewill and agencies
Friday August 17, 2007
Guardian Unlimited
Vladimir Putin today ordered the Russian air force to resume the cold war practice of long-range flights by strategic bombers.
"We have decided to restore flights by Russian strategic aviation on a permanent basis," the president told reporters at joint military exercises with China and four central Asian states in the Russian Ural mountains.
Earlier this month, Russian air force generals said bomber crews had flown near a US military base on the Pacific island of Guam, causing US aircraft to be scrambled to track them. The Pentagon said Russian aircraft had not come close enough to US ships for American planes to react.
In a reference to the US, Mr Putin said the halting of long-range bomber flights after the Soviet Union's collapse had affected Russia's security because other nations had continued such missions.
Around 6,000 troops and hundred of armoured vehicles and fighter jets took part in military manoeuvres in the Urals, watched by Mr Putin and his Chinese counterpart, Hu Jintao.
The two men took part in yesterday's regional summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation along with the leaders of a clutch of former Soviet central Asian republics.
The meeting concluded with a thinly veiled warning to the US to keep away from the energy-rich and strategic region.

Russia seeks its place in the sun
Simon Tisdall
Friday August 17, 2007
The Guardian
The declaration earlier this month by Admiral Vladimir Masorin, commander of the Russian navy, that Moscow intends to re-establish a permanent naval presence in the Mediterranean is under close scrutiny from Washington to Tel Aviv. While more an aspiration than established fact, the move carries myriad, challenging implications, ranging from the US Sixth Fleet's regional monopoly on naval power to the security of trans-Caucasian and North African energy supply routes.
Yet it is the prospect of Russia reactivating its cold war naval bases in Syria's Tartus and Latakia ports which could have the most dramatic impact. By raising Syria's stock in the region, analysts say such a move could further complicate western attempts to achieve settlements in Lebanon and Palestine. Defensive missile and surveillance systems around any Russian installations might also shift the military balance to Israel's disadvantage.
A brief by Stratfor.com, a private US intelligence firm, said: "A Russian naval presence off the Syrian coast could allow Syrian president Bashar al-Assad's regime to better inoculate itself against a potential attack by the US or Israel ... The Russians would be offering an attractive insurance policy."

there's no way Iran is NOT on a war footing. With the latest in Russian air defenses, Iran will not suffer the 30 days of 'shock and awe'. The two carrier fleets will suffer terribly when the chinese stealth missiles target them. I'm guessing we'll need a draft at that time.
SCO Leaders Send a Message to U.S.
By Leila Saralayeva
The Associated Press
BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan -- The leaders of Russia, China and Iran warned the outside world Thursday to let Central Asia look after its own stability and security, in a veiled message to the United States issued on the eve of major war games between Russia and China.
At a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, leaders issued a statement that was an apparent warning to the United States to stay away from the strategically placed, resource-rich region.
"Stability and security in Central Asia are best ensured primarily through efforts taken by the nations of the region on the basis of the existing regional associations," the leaders said at the end of the organization's summit in the Kyrgyz capital, Bishkek.

Medical crisis in Iraq as doctors and nurses flee
By Kim Sengupta
Published: 18 August 2007
The humanitarian disaster in Iraq is being compounded by a mass exodus of their medical staff fleeing chronic violence and lawlessness. A report by Oxfam International shows the lack of doctors and nurses is fracturing a health system on the brink of collapse.
The research revealed that many hospitals, and medical teaching facilities in Baghdad have lost up to 80 per cent of their teaching staff. The dossier says Iraq is suffering from an appalling and largely hidden humanitarian crisis, away from the daily bombings, with millions of people in desperate need of help.
Medical staff received a large pay rise in the aftermath of the war with average salaries rising from as little as $25 (£12.50) a month to $ 300. But the lack of security and the ever-present threat of kidnappings and bomb attacks have persuaded an increasing number to seek safety abroad.
The children, as is the case in most conflicts, are among the worst-affected. Child malnutrition rates already as high as 19 per cent before the US led invasion, are now 28 per cent. More than 11 per cent of babies are born underweight, a rate tripled since the war.

I really like this political cartoon. Anyone have a clue how you could get a print of it?

How many posts for youpolls.com does this make, SEVEN, EIGHT?
I have the perfect idea for a political cartoon. I wish I could draw, or someone could draw this: Cheney shoots himself in the face after watching a clip of him from 1994 on YouTube.
Our favorite west coast wingnut Melanie Morgan gave a great performance on Hardball today trying to explain why Cheney in 1994 wasn't smarter than Cheney in 2003. She also told another guest that she would look great in a burka. She was on a roll today.
