Nuns call for impeachment of Bush/Cheney

I think we've reached a tipping point, Ladies and Gentlemen:

“The National Coalition of American Nuns is impelled by conscience to call you to act promptly to impeach President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney for ... high crimes and misdemeanors,” the group wrote in a letter written on behalf of its board members.

The letter says that impeachment is warranted for their “deceiving the public under the false pretense that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction” and “destroying” the reputation of the United States and the good will of other nations.

“The time for impeachment is now — before the example of George W. Bush’s regime is set in stone,” they wrote. “Future generations will thank you for preserving the freedom of our nation and its relation to the entire human community.”

first? I went to Catholic school. You don't want to piss-off the Nuns....

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...............
*crickets chirping*

They just don't carry the weight they once had. I feared nuns when I had the threat of a good knuckle cracking hanging over my head.

RIP Sister Martin Joseph

Frist

And if we don't impeach, the Nuns will wack us all with rulers....

Or maybe not Frist....this is another chip, and a pretty significant one.....These are opinion leaders for Catholics, a very large group, prone to social conservatism.

Nuns have a national coalition?

When NUNS have to get into the fray to state the obvious, then we certainly are a country of imbeciles. Impeachment for the statement reasons should be self-evident to anyone with half a clue.

Tomorrow is here. The game is over. The crisis has passed -- and the patient is dead. Whatever dream you had about what America is, it isn't that anymore. It's gone. And not just in some abstract sense, some metaphorical or mythological sense, but down in the nitty-gritty, in the concrete realities of institutional structures and legal frameworks, of policy and process, even down to the physical nature of the landscape and the way that people live.

The Republic you wanted -- and at one time might have had the power to take back -- is finished. You no longer have the power to keep it; it's not there. It was kidnapped in December 2000, raped by the primed and ready exploiters of 9/11, whored by the war pimps of the 2003 aggression, gut-knifed by the corrupters of the 2004 vote, and raped again by its "rescuers" after the 2006 election. Beaten, abused, diseased and abandoned, it finally died. We are living in its grave.

Post-Mortem America

First sane words to come out of the Catholic Church, or any subpart thereof, for quite some time. At the core, they are correct. Think about it, for those of you that hate Hillary or all things Democratic Party, how are you going to react when the next commander-in-chief has a (D) at the end of their name and gets to play all the little games that W et al have set up. You're feeling safe already, especially with the knowledge that government rarely contracts, only expands its powers.

A friend's sister is an elderly nun. She was conservative until she read Wallis' book the Call to Conversion.

There are a lot of liberal Catholics, practicing and non-.

But yeah, those nuns were scary!

Thank you, Brides of Christ.

Godless Liberals!

I guess that John Kerry doesn't look like such a bad Catholic to them now, does he?

The nun who taught us religious instruction in high school was very matter of fact about fidelity: screwing around leaves you vulnerable to germs.

Little did she know....

The Nuns need to grab their rulers and pay Nancy Pelosi a visit. She's the one who says impeachment is off the table.

It's too late, Sistahs....

Enjoy.

How is it that "The National Coalition of American Nuns" is not subject to losing their tax exempt status per rules that prevent churches and religious organizations from political and lobbying activities? Or are they?

Not to mention the hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqis and tens of thousands of US lives lost or irreparably damaged .

Holy Crap!!!

All that time spent in prayer and it takes them four years to figure this shit out?

I, for one, have always wondered why these nuns hate america so much.

Bush will sick the IRS onto them to take away their tax exempt status for violating rules that prevent churches and religious organizations from political and lobbying activities and the nuns will recant.

This statement by the nuns has undoubtedly brought a smile to the face of former anti-war activist and Jesuit priest Daniel Berrigan, who spoke out against the war those many years ago.

say what you will, but it is evident that the nuns have bigger balls than the spineless democrats (kucinich and a miniscule minority not withstanding).

the failure to hold the cheney preziduncy accountable for their crimes against the constitution, in order to play political-footsy, is proof that, currently, in the US neither party cares what is best for america, they only care what is best for their party.

AMERICA: A GREAT AND GOOD NATION

UNITED WE STAND: AGAINST War Profiteering, George W. Bush, Richard B. Cheney and other civil officers who have committed Treason, Bribery, Fraud and High Crimes against the United States of America, our public institutions and our people.

The nuns taking a position on the issues is a good thing. I only hope they don't make a habit of it.

Badda bing. Badda BOOM!

Lets not forget Jesus was a pacifist. Make your jokes about nuns but they have truely devoted their lives to bringing help and peace to all. This is a big deal. If Mother Teresa was alive should would be asking the same. It is obvious the Jesus that the Bush administration believes in is different then the Jesus these nuns believe in.

Not all nuns are conservative -- and neither are all Catholics. Just about half the Catholic population in the U.S. is left of center. Some think Pope Ratzinger is great, others think he's an asshole (although they don't put that in their church bulletins).

The church may be stuck in the middle ages but all of its members are NOT.

This is more proof that the god that Bush speaks to is just Dick Cheney hiding behind the door and not THE GOD we all know and love lol.

All I gotta is: Nuns! Nuns! Nuns! How is the Bush company dodgeballers gonna handle this? Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha! "The nuns, ya see, are delusional, there is no, uh, god. Shit! We can't say that."

The Christian right will finally eat big fat fucking crow with this announcement. Please MSM, do the right thing for once in your wallet bloated life. Report this.

Surely you don't think those kooky evil-angle-ists have a monopoly on theocracy, do you?

Expect convents to be closed, and nuns placed under extreme rendition for possessing WMD's, yardsticks.

Excuse Me!?!

There is a large segment of the Christian population had nothing whatsoever to do with W's ascension into power. The only reason that it seems like we are all under the thumb of the religious right is because they spend their money on access and power. We spend our money on helping the hungry, sick, poor, and underrepresented.

Real Christian values.

And of course women are listened to in the patriarchal Catholic Church. Sorry, former students don't count. Get back to me the the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops pipes up. Folks in DC just might start paying attention.

Wow. That's all I've got to say. Wow.

Will Cheney invoke the San Salvadorian Option?

How strange, I would have thought that the nuns would have gotten their invitation to this party four years ago, at least.
And how courageous of them to come out against the Satanic Policies of Bushco now, with only approx. 75% of the country on their side.
I am wowed.

This means nothing. Read the article with any measure of care and you will see that it is an association made up of individual nuns (presumably from different orders, churches etc) that consider themselves progressive. Just another splinter group.

Can you see chainey in this role?

pissed off patricia @ 61:

When the nuns come after you, you goose is cooked. In this case your chimp is cooked.

Nuns first came after Bush in large numbers in 2006.

Bush was stumping for some guy running for congress and just a few blocks away a nun convention of some sort was taking place.

When word of Bush being so close reached the sisters a BATTALION of them marched over and began protesting Bush.

I'm sure Bush and his ilk would not see Catholic nuns as "real christians". Their opinion, just like most of America's, is irrelevant to this administration.

What the... the nuns are accusing Bush and Cheney of deceiving the public?! Call me a ketel, but it seems to me the nuns have a patent on deceiving the public. Maybe that's why they're complaining. Impeach the nuns first, Bush and Cheney can follow in seconds. Even if Bush and Cheney are history, I bet the great US can come up with even worse 'leaders'. We could vote for an actual monkey who can say 'making progress' and 'doing all we can' on demand. Number one! Number one!

Where are you when we need you most, Nancy? Impeach, for God's sake, before Bush and Co. destroy what's left of our Constitution, our civil liberties, and our environment. Impeach. Now.

nuns gone nuts/wild....it will be interesting what the rest of the Christians say

I to am puzzled why a San Fran. liberal wouldn't try to impeach the chimp.

dick head @ 74:

Most of "the rest" wants Bush gone.

Nuns, have, for the most part been on the vanguard of social issues. They tend to take social issues very seriously, they deliberate and study extensively within their communities, seeking multiple opinions before coming to consensus. And, when speaking collectively, they make careful deliberate statements.

Most Americans would do well to respect and emulate these women. They might not move fast, but moving fast is overrated (Remember how fast the Democrats moved--for the war, against the war, nominally against it but pro-war in practice, against this war but for the next one....). Rather, they are steadfast.

And once our holy sisters are utterly convinced of a correct course of action, there is little that can stop them. They will endure any hardship to bring about the greater good. Like St. Catherine of Siena, who made peace when all the powerful men insisted that peace was impossible, these women are nothing short of miraculous.

God bless them!

I used to be in that band, and I support impeachment. Does that count?

The Sisters - ah bless them - the Church may be full of dressed up guys playing authoritarian, but those Sisters. They're just truthful. You might recall the young nuns who marched in the front of the line at Selma - MLK knew that even a southern deputy wouldn't turn the firehoses on a nun. The sisters that I know are amazing. I haven't known a Republican nun in recent memory. BigTobacco - you are so right - they are steadfast and nothing stops them.

They best talk to the priests who preached for people to vote for BOOsh and Cheeeney. We have friends that actually left the catholic church because their priest kept telling them to vote for BOOSh since he is against abortion. Never mind the millions he has killed in his war for oil. They are getting what they deserve, NO MORE MONEY.

Bush the kaiser, Nun the wiser.

The nuns have the right of it. I fear that Bush will set a horrible precedent for future presidents. When conservatives such as Jonathan Turley, Robert Fein, and Bob Barr worry that a Republican administration has gained too much power and is ignoring constitutional protections, it is time to impeach and limit the president's powers.

Cool. Do you think the cabal will somehow spin the nuns as hating America, or as terra-iss supporters?

dick head @ 74:

nuns gone nuts/wild....it will be interesting what the rest of the Christians say

Who cares what the rest of pseudo-chritianity thinks.
They've gone berserk. They're frigging looney; as bad as the terra-iss, or maybe worse!

Please send His Holiness a carbon copy, Sisters.

It's a progressive group, but this is especially interesting because a key target of Karl Rove's divisive "50 plus 1" politics has been Catholics, the socially conservative kind.

Weelll.... If the nuns are now in favor of impeachment.... Gee, maybe it's time for Nancy to rethink her own position..... Whats' on the table for dinner now Nancy?????? How bout a big ol helping of IMPEACHMENT!!!! Builds strong bodies twelve ways....ya know............JD

Nuns or not, their support for impeachment does NOTHING to produce the 67 votes needed for conviction and removal.

Speaker Pelosi is not going to budge, because of that fact.

• We have about 30 votes in the Senate for conviction. The other 70 votes are one sort or another of complicit in Bush's crimes.

UNLESS we get another 40 votes somehow, the effort would fail. But notice how FEW activists want to work on getting those votes (mostly by protesting REPUBLICANS, but also R-leaning Dems like Feinstein), and how many take the easy road of bashing Pelosi for not being willing to start something which has no effective conclusion.

Rasputin @ 19:

Any friend of Zorro is a friend of mine!

Ha!

I hear what you are saying Paul in L.A.... You've been pretty consistent all along about this impeachment issue and the realities.. I see the realpolitik you see as well as you do. Believe it or not, at least as far as recognizing the factors at work in this mess. I have taken issue with you on this before but I get it.. I realize we need to get that other 40 votes some kind of way... Yea, I'm mad as hell at Pelosi but I get the basic problem...That's a lot of arm twisting for any one woman or man for that matter.

So, whats the plan... How does the average constituent voter pressure 40 politicians, most not in California... I'm ready to give Feinstein hell for her own waffling on this... and have already.. But writing and phone calls only go so far... And not even that far when the lines are busy... And you send strongly worded or even nicely worded missives asking her or Nancy or whomever to do something and all you get back is some vague form letter email, probably generated by the lowest office pogue in the pecking order and mostly filled with meaningless platitudes about thanking me for writing and how blah blah blah whatever... But it never directly addresses what I wrote about....or more importantly what the politician of the moment intends to do about it specifically... That never happens... So, what's a person to do in that situation Paul???? I'm open to new ideas on that one...

I'm still in favor of an impeachment effort.. Even a failed one because in my view it sends a message to the rest of the world that really needs sent.... We the people need to make clear to the rest of the world that George W. Bush and his policies are doing things that we don't approve of.. I still think in terms of the long picture, this is a message that we need to impart to the rest of this planet....before they think we're all just a pack of 'good Germans' or clueless hicks being led around by the nose by a pack of immoral criminals...............

Yea its gonna fail Paul, I know that, but it will put this country on record as having attempted to correct a clear wrong. It will show this nation is not in lockstep towards Bush's version of economic totalitarianism. Even a failed effort will show people that a lot of us Americans have a different view of what this nation should be up to and I think that has a value... and I know you won't agree with me... I guess we will just have to agree to disagree about this issue.... Overall I like the things you write about and the perspectives you bring to this site................Even if I don't always agree with them...........JD

Jack, the idea of holding an impeachment in order to counter the image America has gotten is logical, but practically it's not possible.

What we need are FITZGERALDS, special prosecutors, and grand juries. We need indictments. We need to restore the justice system to functioning, and activism CAN help get the gears moving again.

We also need to pressure R and R-leaning Dems over the military appropriations bill coming up in two weeks. The leadership WILL put time limits and other restrictions in the House bill -- the Senate will water down, but within what is possible, we can help move the result closer -- if we don't take the easier route of blaming the wrong people for the non-perfection of the results.

And we need to pressure on who becomes AG next, and make our demand for JUSTICE on the manifold crimes a deafening roar. So, even out of state, we need to pressure the Senators who will in part make that decision.

The impeachment method has never worked. So we really ought not to feel so bad that it won't save us or our reputation. We need to work to make the justice system work, and our anger about the failure of impeachment as a method (a failure that should be charged to the founders, not Pelosi, because it has NEVER worked) needs to focus on the complicit, and not on the worthless Dem-bashing that projects anger onto the wrong people. We need justice, and our grand juries will produce it. Even if we can't remove Bush/Cheney by Congressional means, that doesn't mean we shouldn't work hard to put them before grand juries, and in prison, for the rest of their stinking lives.

Work on making a better Congress, not on bashing the leadership. We are entering a period of perhaps 20 years of very powerful Congresses, which is good, we need Congressional power. Let's spend our energies working to get rid of the clinkers, and forcing the complicit out with indictments.

Twelve years of parochial education for this poster. I know from personal experience that it takes a lot to get a single nun, let alone a whole group, to speak out publicly on such issues. Dubya is going to have a cozy place in hell when he dies (if such a place exists).

Wow. How's THAT going to play with the religious right?

Shared Humanity @ 92:

Dubya is going to have a cozy place in hell when he dies (if such a place exists).

It clearly does not. People who fantasize that the universe is keeping tabs on their actions, and will punish wrongdoers, are operating on a medieval worldview which has categorically been disproven.

Skin diseases, for instance, are not a punishment. Nor does God make tsunamis to punish the gays.

Nun of what they say matters.

George W. has appointed himself the savior of the world. They obviously didn't see that memo from God.

And the chances of our spineless Speaker - Nancy Pelosi putting impeachment back on the table?

Nun.

Wait a second, isn't Pelosi Catholic?
Send the Nuns to her house, rulers in hand!!!

There may be hope yet!

It's the march of the penquins!!!

Da Spyda @ 96:

And the chances of our spineless Speaker - Nancy Pelosi putting impeachment back on the table?

Her spine is just fine. It's YOUR lack of 47 additional free votes for conviction in the Senate that is the problem.

That's why it is off the table, and why it is still off the table.

Get the fuck out of office.

You made my day!

I was raised Catholic.

I say that all these patriotic nuns should all be issued rulers, after which they can severely rap the bare knuckles of Bush and Cheney, those bad, bad, naughty boys.

Because, as I learned at an early age, one doesn't mess around with nuns. They're the enforcers in the Catholic church, while the priests (and Catholics like Bill Donohue) are the enablers.

You go nuns!

Paul in L.A;

Thanks for the response... I agree with your ideas on where we need to go, who to hold responsible... I guess we are not actually too far apart ideologically.... I guess it's mostly about the details of how we get from this trainwreck to the other side of the tracks where things are better.... It's the details of how we get there, that we tend to differ on.....

Yours is a reasoned strategy that takes into account the realities of what we are facing.... I too would like to see a battalion of Fitzgeralds taking this administration to task. That said, given the state we find ourselves in, the people we find holding the reigns of power these days, I am uncertain that your logical approach using the system in a way I believe the framers probably intended will be any more successful in a practical way than my more impetuous strident approach of an impractical impeachment that would most likely be doomed to failure....

Still I'm not married to the impeachment idea any more than I'm married to the crazy notion that I'd put a gun to Bushs head and pull the trigger myself....Might be a fun fantasy, but truly not practical... Making that fool a myrtar is the absolutely most impractical thing that could happen....

I guess the only thing I'm really married to by way of ideas is the idea that Bush needs to be out of office in whatever rational manner that can accomplish this and this nation needs to heal internally and make amends externally, in whatever practical manner that idea can take to make this idea a reality....That's where I'm really coming from... And it sort of sounds to me like, all diferences aside, the place I'm coming from is very similar to the place you are coming from Paul...................regards; JD

If the word has gotten to the nuns that the fox is the hen house you would think that Nancy Pelosi is either deaf or dumb.

It's not surprising that nuns would be against the war - Catholic clergy are usually liberal about issues of economics and war - but to actually call for impeachment? Wow.
