Clarence Thomas, oddball

Remember the old expression, "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt"?

Apparently, no one's told Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas about this. At a Fedearlist Society gathering last night, he told the audience, “It’s me! I see myself moving around! Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!”

It doesn't exactly inspire confidence, now does it?

Oddball, goofball, and one of the worst Judges ever. How about the fact that he very rarely says anything or asks any questions while cases are being heard by the SCOTUS. This jerk is beyond pathetic, just like Reagan he is touted as some great person when in fact he is a putz.

Wow, sometimes it takes weeks for something this nit-picky to show up on the pages of Crooks and Liars. Way to make me feel sorry for Clarence Thomas, posting some guy from the WP following him around like a Bill O'really goon, and covering his talk like a Fox News monkey. There is a way to make a point well, and this is not it.

I wish the liberal media would stop denigrating this man. We get it. You think Clarence Thomas is the dumb affirmative action negro on the the Supreme Court. He aint got no brain. He is just a coon and a handkerchief head shining the boots of Antonin Scalia. Enuff already.

Liberals somehow feel free to ascribe every racist stereotypical image to Justice Thomas they claim conservatives believe about most blacks. Clarence Thomas is a brilliant man who was indeed the victim of a high tech lynching. Justice Thomas is reticent during during oral arguments, not because he is a dunce, but because of his conviction that heated exchanges during oral arguments are often disrespectful to the attorneys trying to present their cases. Thomas prefers a more cerebral, quieter environment in which to carefully contemplate matters of constitutional law. This is a matter of style; not substance. Justice Thomas authored several Supreme Court concurrences and dissenting opinions. He is his own man and differed from Scalia on fundamental Constitutional issues such as stare decisis; the Establishment Clause(elk grove v. newdow); and the use of medical marijuanaz(gonzales v raich).

Any woman who has been through sexual harrassment know she was telling the truth.
You cant make up the stuff these guys say. Really, how could you make up 'pubic hair on a Coke can'?
That just rang so true to me, because it was exactly like (with differing detail) every single other case of sexual harassment I've ever been through or heard about.
He might have been drunk or hungover at the time, but......

Thomas should have, at the very least, been subject to drug and alcohol testing for and in this job, for the rest of his life.

So Clarence Thomas is an individual who weighs legal questions with an open, jurisprudent mind? If you're not a complete imbecile and bother to look at his voting record you will see that he was one of the five criminal justices who installed George W. Bush in office without bothering to wait for a vote count, thereby enabling a depraved, degenerate piece of human filth to take the highest office in the land and commit genocide on a huge scale, called for the anti-Constitutional placement of religion (specifically Christian) in the government, and consistently refused to hear dubiuous capital punishment cases among his many other CRIMES. You can take Mr. Tambourine Man (a close relative of Topsy Rice) and shove him up your ass.

Bill was simply a far more beneficent republican than any Democrat could be at the time. He actually was 3rd behind the fla. and tex. in executions and his state was third-last in education behind alabama and mississippi.

quote from elvis after he refused to go on stage after James Brown (his opening act at the time): "he couldn't shine my shoes" I can't give you the entire context for that, but it was said to have occurred after Elvis that night was asked if the reason he would not perform was the sensational opening act.

I believe Elvis mellowed later and grew as a person and performer. He never made up with James Brown, as far as I remember. They could have kept each other off drugs.

Acknowledging that generality doesn't mean one is ignoring the trials and tribulations individuals may go through. What "poor white male song"? Pointing out that Thomas' past showing up in the confirmation process was comparatively TRIVIAL, and NOT BASED ON RACE? But rather his own actions? Did you even read what I wrote? Your (and the other poster's) assumptions make a mockery of you.

What does any of this have to do with Thomas, and his claims of "lynching"? Are you trying to make some half-hearted appeal to affirmative action on his behalf or something? You know he HATES the idea right? That's kind of the whole point. I will say it again, "Thomas is a damn hypocrite for playing the race card inappropriately in his confirmation, yet striking down the affirmative action opportunities for everyone else. What he went through (being confronted with his past mistakes) is something EVERYONE black or white has to go though in life, at the least!"

"you have to stop pretending the playing field is level… or keep pretending but expect to be called on it"

Where did I ever say the playing field was level? I sure as hell don't think it is. I do however, KNOW, that the major obstacles to a fair shot at life are poverty and lack of education. Not race. Racism will always be a factor (cutting in all directions); more in some areas that others. But I hardly see you "calling me" on anything. Just more misguided assumptions and some tangent about white men with criminal records... whatever that has to do with the topic at hand.

Relate your statement somehow to what I was saying about Thomas, and maybe you have some sort of point. But I sure don't see that yet. Without money, there is no guarantee of opportunity. Without education, you will most likely fail to make the best of an opportunity. Discounting rare luck, you'll need both to have a good chance at success, I don't care what you look like. And don't quote some damn random statistics to me if you going to change the subject more generally to racism alone to make an argument. It isn't convincing or relevant in the least. Learn WHY that statistic exists. Why recidivism is so much higher in black communities (showing a measurable difference in those two rap sheets). And what needs to change to rectify that situation. But ultimately you're wasting your breath trying to talk me in to supporting affirmative action -- I already do. You'll need to have a chat with poor little Clarence though, as he will strike it down wherever he can. Short-sighted if you ask me (see education, poverty again).

By the way, a "liberal elite" review of Thomas' book... still pretty interesting. Points out the main flaw with Thomas. He thinks always being contrary means the same thing as always thinking independently. It just isn't so; in fact, it makes you a puppet on a string. I think there are FAR better representatives of Frederick Douglass among us, that understand his intent rather than just appropriating his words.

And a diehard friend of Rush Limbaugh and Cheney, he'll be there at least another 10 years... enjoy!

"Elvis hated black people"

That has got to be the most sacrilegious remark ever made in this forum.

mrog:

Thomas is exactly what the rest of the Bush administration is: a C student who wants to get even with all those A and B students who outshone him. He is a failure who somehow got promoted above his intellectual capabilities. He hasn't had an original thought in his life and he is a self-hating black man. That anyone should revere him or laud his lack of accomplishments is scary. If you look in the dictionary under the word mediocrity, you will find his picture.

Judge my swarm of killer monkeys by the content of their little characters, not by the color of their fur! (...and then try to forgive them anyway...) ;)

Wow. How did I miss the interesting half of this thread? Bizarre King Kong references, insisting Clinton was black, and Elvis hated black people! Just wow.

As far as Elvis though, since James Brown later talked about how close he felt to Elvis, I don't see how that myth ever got any traction. I'm no Elvis fan, but I know he grew up poor, crossed the color barrier and just fell in love with gospel music. From the time he was little he would go to (and be welcomed in) traditionally black churches.

I guess you could call that "ripping off"... but I just don't see it that way. Especially with music. Music IS. You don't steal music by falling in love with it! It isn't a finite quantity. You share it. Music divides and grows, multiplies and spreads. Music is an idea. Wouldn't it be wrong for Elvis NOT to play the gospel music that he loved so much, just because of his color?

Anyway, there is little doubt that radical groups in the 70s tried to demonize Elvis (and near anything else) to try to rally power for themselves as "leaders of the black power movement" after the death of Dr. King. By spreading lies about Elvis they tried to divide, to hurt and to hate. And it often worked for them... for a while, anyway. But it sure didn't help the country move forward. If nothing else, Elvis almost singlehandedly began the de-segregation of music:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elvis :
When "That's All Right" was played, many listeners were sure Presley must be black. Therefore, white disc-jockeys wouldn't touch Presley's Sun singles. On the other hand, Negroes' music and the Negro disc-jockeys didn't want anything to do with a record made by a white man."[67] To some, Presley had undoubtedly "stolen" or at least "derived his style from the Negro rhythm-and-blues performers of the late 1940s."[68] "Racists attacked rock and roll because of the mingling of black and white people it implied and achieved, and because of what they saw as black music's power to corrupt through vulgar and animalistic rhythms... The popularity of Elvis Presley was similarly founded on his transgressive position with respect to racial and sexual boundaries... it seems that many Americans wanted black music without the black people in it."[69]
[...]
In 1957, Presley was alleged to have said: "The only thing Negro people can do for me is to buy my records and shine my shoes." The singer always denied saying, or ever wanting to say, such a racist remark. Jet magazine, run by and for African-Americans, subsequently investigated the story and found no basis to the claim. However, the Jet journalist did find plenty of testimony that Presley judged people "regardless of race, color or creed."[79]

Found these other interesting quotes:

"Without preamble, the three-piece band cuts loose. In the spotlight, the lanky singer flails furious rhythms on his guitar, every now and then breaking a string. In a pivoting stance, his hips swing sensuously from side to side and his entire body takes on a frantic quiver, as if he had swallowed a jackhammer.” -- Time Magazine, May 15, 1956

"His kind of music is deplorable, a rancid smelling aphrodisiac...It fosters almost totally negative and destructive reactions in young people." -- Frank Sinatra, 1950's (shame on you Frank)

“A lot of people have accused Elvis of stealing the black man’s music, when in fact, almost every black solo entertainer copied his stage mannerisms from Elvis.” -- Jackie Wilson

“You know, Bush is always comparing me to Elvis in sort of unflattering ways. I don’t think Bush would have liked Elvis very much, and that’s just another thing that’s wrong with him.” -- Bill Clinton, During the 1992 presidential campaign.

“I wasn’t just a fan, I was his brother. He said I was good and I said he was good; we never argued about that. Elvis was a hard worker, dedicated, and God loved him. Last time I saw him was at Graceland. We sang Old Blind Barnabus together, a gospel song. I love him and hope to see him in heaven. There’ll never be another like that soul brother." -- James Brown

Justice Thomas shows that white people do not have a monopoly on corruption and/or lack of critical thinking / integrity...add to Uncle Clarence, Uncle Collin and Aunt Condi. You would think that after 100 years of American Apartheid they would want to defend the Constitution, human rights and civil rights, instead they defend the rights of non-human corporations and their lobbies, i.e., "people" who put profits over justice and fair play. The human race is divided into those who want to bring up the collective whole and those who are afraid and thus greedy. Justice Thomas is afraid, he's afraid of revolt, he's a good slave, he can work in the house and not in the cotton fields along with Condi and Collin.

Do you think the republicans would ever appoint someone with sense and intelligence. Heck no...Look at the Supreme Judge that just died. He was in a fog all day long on drugs. And this piece of crap is wild eyed crazy. And we have another that was appointed who is suggested to have epilipsy. So what does that tell you, that the republicans want goof balls making the decisions so they can screw everything up.

If they ever do another remake of The Shining, Thomas should get Jack Nicholson's part.

CoIntelPro,
Will bet that Bush executed more people of color than anyone, hahah.

Seriously, most think Clinton was our first black president.

Most who? Did you poll MOST of those people? That was something said by someone notable/famous and then a comedian or two put it in a few bits and suddenly people think that it was a consensus; it was not.

MOST of those you're talking about would never say something so stupid.

Jeez, it is just a popular cultural bon mot. But I do remember this being said by black church members as a form of praise when Clinton was president..

Hey swarmofkillermonkeys! #70 great post! thanks.
