Has he....Sorry, I got carried away...Bill O'Reilly attacks the LA Times because they printed an op-ed called "Teaching the Pope." In it they ask Pope Benedict XVI to not be influenced by hardliners: " He would be wiser to listen to other Catholics, laypeople as well as clergy, who know what mischief would be caused by a decree that would seem to force some Catholic officials to choose between their responsibility to their constituents or the Constitution and their standing in the church denied communion because of their views on abortion." Sounds reasonable, right? Not for BillO.
O'Reilly: The LA Times writes an editorial lecturing the Pope to stay away from Conservative Catholics hardliners, ummm and give communion to people who are pro-choice. They're actually telling the leader of the Catholic Church who to give the sacraments to. I mean, talk about hubris?
O'Reilly cries, "hubris!" to the LA Times for their unthinkable position of lecturing the Pope. It's an op-ed that actually would benefit Rudy Giuliani this presidential cycle. John Kerry didn't have that defense. Funny how BillO somehow forgets when HE lectured Pope John Paul because he was against the invasion of Iraq.
But as I’ve said before, I believe also that John Paul is naive and detached from reality. If America does not lead an attack on Iraq, once again, Saddam remains in power and is free to use his anthrax and other terrible weapons as he chooses.
So the pope does not seem to be concerned about that or about Saddam’s behavior in general. Once again, he must know Saddam is a killer. He must know he’s oppressed his own people using murder and torture. He must know that. Summing up, Jacques Chirac is our enemy, and the pope, well, I don’t know what to think.
Naive and detached from reality. Sounds like he's describing a crazy person. Bill even wrote a piece in the Jewish World Review calling him a "Saddam Enabler!" Talk about "hubris." What a hypocrite, but that's nothing new for The Factor.

Watching O'Reilly in the evening is how I get my evening laugh. It is funny to see how one man can sit there and claim his own importance as if he himself were God. Have a problem? O'Reilly says he can fix it.... only, of course, if you are a republican supporter. I have never really witnessed a person with such a swelled head that hasn't exploded yet.

I am not sure where the hypocrisy lies here. I hate Bill O, but just because he criticized and villainized JP II regarding international politics does not mean he is automatically a hypocrite for chastising a major newspaper for directing the new pope in terms of the internal affairs of its church.
I doubt Bill O's point was to be this nuanced, registering different levels of criticism that don't necessarily contradict one another, but I don't see how he's a hypocrite here.
As I said, I can't stand him.
Catholics believe papal infallibility applies only to dogmatic church teachings on faith or morals. The Pope becomes susceptible to naivete and delusion when he sticks his nose into areas in which he has no expertise; such as the war on terrorism.

O'Reilly has a thing against the L.A. Times. They ran some op-ed pieces that attacked him and he then went on a rant in several shows some years ago about how awful and biased the paper is. Firstly, I'm a former newspaper journalist and anyone who works on a newspaper knows the op-ed page is not the reporting page. But when O'Reilly is attacked he then generalizes. So it was him against the LAT. At one point I believe they let him do an op-ed page on something. But it is NOT automatic that each time a newspaper prints an unfavorable reference to a news maker or celebrity in a story, or a mention of them on the op-ed, that they get to write their own piece to respond. I'm highly critical of newspapers, but i do consider the LAT one of the very best and most complete in the country. It's new owners have not really changed it all that much (which some former Knight Ridder newspapers cannot say). O'Reilly really does not have a thick skin. He gets angry at some news outlets, talkers, or websites then negatively labels them. So I think in this case he just felt it gave him an opening to again say how much he hates the LAT -- which he will until they day they run an op ed ;profusely praising him or a story in their Calender section proclaiming him an insightful, independent minded, even-tempered commentator. Which is unlikely to happen.
Much as it pains me to 'defend' world's vilest person -- I don't see the basis for criticizing him here -- his criticism of JP was about politics; the LA Times point was about the internal workings of the Catholic Church -- certainly these two are not comparable.

Pope Ratzinger is a right wingers dream. Pope John Paul less so. Pope John Paul realized that left and right could be used for positive and negative influences, and encouraged restraint from both. The only arguments against legal abortion are born from religious viewpoints, legal abortion is the only humane way of dealing with a purely individual circumstance. Religious viewpoints are not negated by legal abortion, it is obviously legal to choose NOT have one.
Bill I guess conveniently forgets that the US government put Saddam in power to begin with and that we were the ones who sold him all the nerve, mustard and other types of gas that he used against the Kurds, Iranians and his fellow countrymen for years. Thats why we said we KNEW he had thoughs type of weapons.
