Very funny!

I love the writer's strike. It's removed 90% of the crap from TV and made us realize just how unimportant television is. I hope it lasts forever and TV shuts down.

I'm not necessarily sympathetic with the strikers anymore (thanks to the WGA spokesperson HERE), but Woody's genius in conveying a message is priceless.

I moved into my present quarters 02/07. On an impulse I didn't have my satellite re-connected. I wanted to see how much I'd miss it. It's still off.

Give the clarinet a go, I have been playing guitar for 38 years and have just picked up the clarinet. It's nice to play something a little different. Gets the creative juices flowing.

You do the work. John has posted numerous threads here about the strike, and I remember the sneering remarks by the "WGA" people.

And BTW, Woody appears to have successfully delivered a strong message without one written/spoken word...curious, considering the topic.

I haven't watched TV since 1996 (except when I'm someplace besides home and it's inflicted on me). I don't miss it a bit.

When somebody tells you they don't have enough time in their lives, ask them how much tv they watch.

Sneering remarks?

You would deny people the right to make a good living providing entertainment for you now that the internet will be the future of primary market for TV and motion pictures because you didn't personally like a WGA writer....

and you can't be bothered to provide a link?

Wow. I guess you must be very important indeed!

debaser71's picture

IMO most writers are pretty bad...just look at the shows that are on TV, there's a lot of crap out there. Anyway I favor writers getting a cut of internet profits and stuff. Seems fair and reasonable to me.

How did you carry "You do the work" to me being "very important"? Are you too lazy? You don't want to do the work? Just collect the residuals of being clever?

Look for the word "residuals" in the strike posts, look for the "WGA" people, and look for my name. Yes, sneering is the right word by the WGA people.

But why get caught up in the residuals matter again? This is about Woody, right?

You prove time and again that you don't want to do the work, you just want to reap the benefits. I've given you enough to go on, now shoo!, go do the work yourself.

I can't get too excited by this writers strike really... I watched the vid and two thoughts occurred to me...
1. Much like l told a friend about this whole Berry Bonds bruhaha, 'I can't get to concerned about Barry trying to kill himself with steroids with world burnin down and chimpy leading the parade over the cliff... Same applies to this business...
2. That's a big problem with this whole Bush fiasco presidency..
Doesn't have a laugh track.. Course, its hard to portray a tragedy as a comedy but at least the more clueless among us would maybe understand that whatever their purdy-little-latest mouthpiece has to say isn't really serious or reality based..JD

I use my TV to watch DVD's and the occasional film on TCM, which has the best prints and great films.

Aside from that, why bother with the rest of the crap? #21 is right. When you discover how much TV you watch, that's usually why you have no spare time. It's such a f***ing wasteland out there.

Don't you people understand that the reason there is so much crap on TV is because writers have been so abused?

I don't watch much TV. I hate reality shows and I won't watch infomercials. That leaves sitcoms that continually recycle 50-year old jokes and reruns from thirty year-old shows like Mash, and pulp crap like 48 Hours Mystery about who killed his ex-wife. They don't even show good movies on TV anymore. The best written shows don't get supported by the networks, so why should good writers exert themselves?

ElToro,the fighting chicken's picture

As for me I get my news from the paper, and NPR, and dont care for TV at all... Also if anyone has noticed this strike is not really generating the buzz to working class people of america, the only unions that are caring about it, are SAG, DGA, and Teamsters in hollywood.

Ten thousand times has the labor movement stumbled and bruised itself. We have been enjoined by the courts, assaulted by thugs, charged by the militia, traduced by the press, frowned upon in public opinion, and deceived by politicians. 'But notwithstanding all this and all these, labor is today the most vital and potential power this planet has ever known, and its historic mission is as certain of ultimate realization as is the setting of the sun.

Yeah, who needs unions? Who needs a fair wage, right?
And who needs entertainment? Why, I haven't seen a good movie or TV Show in the last 20 years, right? I'll happily watch the grass grow, and listen to my neighbor caterwaul. Ha, HA!
Now I understand why no one wants to pay writers. The jokes just write themselves.

I wish the writers strike would crush TV as well. I had hoped the same about football and baseball strikes, that commercialization would lessen, the lack of work and poor attendance would humble the fans. But it didn't. Now both sports are worse than ever.

But that's OK. They're taking your analog TV's off line in about one year, so now you will have to pay even more to watch reruns sponsored by commercials.

Enjoy your TV$

Oh, I found my reason when I got DSL a few years ago. Since then my TV is used for videogames and DVD at 95% of the time.
And if I want decent news, well there's local radio, webradio from around the world and live-streams from France 24 English, EuroNews and others.

'Four Arguments For The Elimination Of Television' is a great book by Jerry Mander. A fine writer, my favorite of his is 'In The Absence Of The Sacred'. Addicting reading.

DavidC's picture

The problem isn't the quality of writing today it's the dilution of talent and theirin lies the real problem. The writers are losing leverage because the entire meduim is losing leverage. While I agree with the writer's point about Internent compensation I have a hard time swallowing 'union rhetoric' when the only people I see left in unions are already way above average wage earners.

Its unfair to solely blame the writers for content that is on television. Suits can shape, mold, and influence content to target demographics, etc. Sometimes the writer is working in a predefined box with limited options.

We can look at this as yet another homage to Bergman. A puckish satire on contemporary morays. It was revolting and nausiating and yet I could not look away. Allan, you have destroyed me.

nash's picture

I'm a writer and unfortunately the best material that writers come up with is usually compromised by the notion that we wouldn't want to offend anyone. Subsequently we get watered down bland material for the general public to despise. I totally support the strike because the internet is the new medium and the media owners know it, but have no control over it. So who should pay? Tricky question. We need a new template for this new landscape. The good thing about the internet is that there is a much greater chance for writers to really write what they want without the corporate control. Nice work Woody...very succinct.

CD's picture

When asked for comment Mr. Allen's wife/daugher said: Me love you long time.

BAC's picture

The same people who don't want to pay the writers a fair wage are the reason there is crap on TV. Quality programs don't have a chance, because 1) they cost too much to produce, 2) are not allowed to build an audience, and 3) would probably mean these CEO's would not make as much money.

What the writers make compared to the CEO's (who don't want to negotiate with them) is pathetic.

I have friends in Hollywood who are writers, and I think they deserve the raise. That's why I posted about this a few weeks ago.

Regardless of your personal views on television, it has a huge impact on our culture. I happen to think one of the reasons young people are less concerned about someone's sexual orientation is that they've grown up with "Will & Grace" and "Ellen."

I support the writers.

60 @ BAC

"...What the writers make compared to the CEO’s (who don’t want to negotiate with them) is pathetic...."

That's because they are C E O s. Like I said before, it's the rich fighting the rich. Unfortunately, the losers in this fight are the viewers that may not come back to view the shows and the non-writing staff that will lose their jobs because of all this.

When you accept a job, you agree to beforehand what you will be paid and the conditions you will be working with. These writers get paid plenty and are very greedy. They work in the entertainment industry and make much more than the average person. Pardon me for not jumping on the "Bosses are Evil" bandwagon, but this strike is only hurting the writers and their credibility.

Bubba Hotep's picture

A genius who fucks his own daughter. Michael Jackson gets chased out of the country on unproven charges in front of a court of law, but Woody walks around New York with his kid on his arm.

John Wison's picture

Allen's breach of trust with his ADOPTED daughter is inexcusable - yet he is still the most articulate and absurdly funny writer and film maker in hollywood. The clip was spot on.

So how 'bout this: I don't look for the WGA "sneering" and you go on posting comments that nobody understands, and I'll just ignore you.
