Karl Rove begins his racist smear campaign in the WSJ against Obama---and is not even subtle about it. He sends out the call to the right that this is where they will need to go to smear him.

Her remarks helped wash away the memory of her angry replies to attacks at the debate's start. His trash talking was an unattractive carryover from his days playing pickup basketball at Harvard, and capped a mediocre night.

What imagery does that conjure up for you? Oh, the days of playing some hoops with his posse and working on his slam dunk. Then he takes it a step further with more race baiting tactics:

He is often lazy, given to misstatements and exaggerations and, when he doesn't know the answer, too ready to try to bluff his way through.

Rove couldn't help himself and had to bring in the "lazy effect" to describe Obama. Don't vote for him because he's soooo "lazy"---just like all minorities. Did he say Obama had a "fence around his heart" somewhere in the op-ed?

There is no point in trying to debate whether Obama is "lazy" or plays "basketball" because that's what the right wants us to do. They muddy the waters with endless canards knowing full well that the media will allow enormous amounts of time debating them instead of the issue at hand. "Was Valerie Plame even a CIA undercover agent?" is a typical example of this tactic by the right even after Gen. Hayden, the head of the CIA declared her one. And as we witnessed---the talking heads gave valuable air time to rehash this nonsense instead of focusing on the real issue of the outing of an undercover CIA agent.

We use a phrase called "Dog whistle politics" to describe coded messaging:

"is a term used to describe a type of political campaigning or speechmaking using coded language, which appears to mean one thing to the general population but which has a different or more specific meaning for a targeted subgroup of the audience.

This op-ed by Karl Rove doesn't even bother with coded messages because its blatant racism is so evident on the surface. He's telling his base to to pull out every racist stereotype you can find to attack Obama with---use it early---and use it often.

SHOCKING!!!

Duh.

Let them play their game. It won't be the frist time they look foolish.

Why hasn't Rove been arrested yet?

Notice the GOP is already spreading this racist garbage all the while pretending that the source is Hillary. Watch Matt Drudge play this game daily.

Nice pointy white hood, ya got there, Karl. Goes real nice with that robe.

#2 almost #1.

BTW, on a light note, did you hear about the blanket of white in the Green Zone?

I'm not buying it.

Rove is trying to stir up some sympathy for Obama so that Obama can have the same "Tweety/Hillary" effect in the upcoming primaries.

Anyone who writes off Rove chooses not to understand why he appeals to some (on paper) well-educated individuals.

Rove understands how Southern and other rural whites hate the libruls of the coasts and upper Midwest. He knows how to drive the wedge. He's a clever guy.

I don't understand this post. Obama has made a point to play basketball for (and often with) the media on a number of occasions already. This has been documented rather well, and I know personally that Obama is an avid ballplayer. How can referencing his ballplaying possibly be considered racist? I mean, Jesus, I would hate to imagine Obama ever actually eating a single piece of fried chicken or whatever other stereotypes you might think up because then he would be quite the racist himself... under your strange logic at least.

Bush set the record for presidential vacation days (previously held by Ronny Reagan, natch) in 2005!!

And Obama is lazy? Maybe you should check your guy, Karl.

Someone please explain to me how this statement is racist:

Don't get me wrong. I'm no fan of Rove or the Repigs but we can't be making issues out of non issues or we stoop to the level of conservatives. Fred Thompson has been called lazy since day one. Calling someone lazy regardless of color is not a racist remark. Seems to me John is starting to use conservative tactics.

Oh, Paleeze. History...Look into it.

I expected Rove to tie Tyson chicken into his smear...

That didn't explain a thing. Calling someone lazy is not a racist remark. Like I said, Fred Thompson has been called lazy since day one. It's quite a reach.

So, Obama is lazy, incurious and prone to exaggeration and misstatement?

Imagine if such a person were to become president?

We can only thank God we have a man like Karl Rove to prevent that from happening.

And who owns the WSJ now?

Exactly. The Fox platform isn't going away. Neither will Rove.

Mr. Amato, while you are at it, you may want to also post a similar scathing article against the Huffington Post. Thier abundance of racism has never been more clear than this article here: Obama Warms Up For Caucuses By Playing Pick-up Basketball.

Please stop grasping at straws. It makes you (and by extention, liberals in general due to the popularity of your blog among us) look bad. Obama is a strong enough candidate to not have to rely on such desperation.

Please don't tell me there are people who still listen to Karl Rove.

[thanks for your concern]

Okay. The message is that Karl's a pundit, not a defendant. Got it. We'll be right back, after this. . .

Actually John Amato is correct. Rove did not even bother to veil the racist code. You may want to look at what was used in Rove's Op-Ed piece and what he actually meant. It is not hard.

Rove belongs in prison. Gitmo, at least as long as its open. He's a key member of the Bush Criminal Cabal.

Bash away, Big John.

Karl Rove's intentions are obvious, regardless of whether or not other people are talking about Obama's love of b-ball.

There's a lot to knee-jerk liberalism that I can't stomach, but holding the light up to that cockroach is always the right thing to do.

White privilege creates blindness. It prevents the development of wisdom. The race-baiting was started several months ago with the dope dealer/drug pusher, Madrassa rumours.....by Democratic party members, and fostered on Progressive web-sites such as Hullaballoo......Digby.

It should be clear that Rove wants HRC to win the nomination so the Republicans win the Whitehouse in November. He thinks they can beat HRC, he's afraid of Obama and Edwards.

Alright, here's my two cents. Hillary is not my preferred candidate but if she's up there taking the oath of office a year from now, I'll be happy with that. But I don't want her to be the nominee because the Republicans do! They've been planning for it for years, ever since her Senate run in 2000. They've got the plan of attack all ready to go on her once she's confirmed and Obama suddenly emerging as the alternative throws all their hard work for a loop. So we're seeing them go after him with a view to taking him out now. It's vital to their plans that Hillary is the Dem's candidate because neither McCain, Guilliani or Romney will bring out the evangelical base, but she will.

There was an article a few months back in the NYT dedicated simply to Obama's enthusiasm for pick up basketball. And yes, he is prone to some trash talking. Kudos to Iowans for keeping racism and genderism completely off the page. Sadly the rest country is not up to the task.

The big problem with the Left since the 1960s is its demand to adhere to orthodoxy.

John,

Much as I love Crooks & Liars and loathe Karl Rove, this post misses the mark significantly. I read Mr. Rove's op-ed in its entirety, and frankly, the accusation that it, specifically, is racist is - in my opinion - baseless.

In this highlighted sentence, "Her remarks helped wash away the memory of her angry replies to attacks at the debate’s start. His trash talking was an unattractive carryover from his days playing pickup basketball at Harvard, and capped a mediocre night," you chose to emphasize that Mr. Rove called out the fact that Senator Obama has played some hoops in his time. What about the second half of that sentence? Why not emphasize "at Harvard"? Attendance at an Ivy League university doesn't really jibe too well with the dog whistle imagery you attribute to this piece.

Also, you should be aware that Sports Illustrated's "Last Word" column an issue or two ago featured a first person account of playing one on one against Barack Obama. (Obama won, and he even talked a little smack.) Is SI a bastion of racism? As a long-time subscriber, I can say pretty confidently that it is not.

Finally, I imagine that your view of this particular op-ed is deeply colored by Karl Rove's long and well-established history as an extremely nasty partisan hack who was a cornerstone of the worst presidency in this country's history. I share your distaste for the man, and his past use of race in campaigns (e.g. against John McCain in 2000) is hard to ignore, but I think your view of the specific material in the WSJ doesn't fit the evidence in this case. There are plenty of things we can point to as examples of the misdeeds and lowest common denominator politics practiced by Karl Rove. His essay "Why Hillary Won" isn't one of them.

Take care,

Did you see the video of Karl Rove trying to rap? I'll bet the ranch he is unaware of the slang definition of "capped". You think too much of him.

I'd only be shocked if there was ever an election where people DIDN'T feel the need to smear the other guy. Sometimes I wish candidates would say what makes them good rather than why the other guy is bad.

Jesus H. Frick, Karl. Doesn't that sound like someone else you know, someone whose name rhymes with 'whoosh'?

Rove's rant is a secure indicator of how very much the GOP wants to run against Hillary Clinton.

I have been thinking that last few days that Karl Rove is advising the Clintons. Seriously. Look at the tactics. Bill says Obama's story is a fairy (as in light in the loafers) tale. Hillary's team suggests he is a Muslim and that he deals drugs. She fires them, but gets to repeat the smear over and over. Begin to sound familiar? Then we have pigboy himself going on the attack. He works for the Clintons because there is no reason for a Republican to be attacking him at this point in the cycle. If we believe this is just Republican trash talk then we have to believe that they want to unseat Obama so that they can run against Hillary. Not likely.

You wrote that Rove displayed racism and "and is not even subtle about it."

I think maybe subtle doesn't mean what you think it means.

Because if there is racism in there, it is very subtle.

Since what was "trash talking", "basketball", and "lazy" something that people pull the race card on.

Give me a break.

Rove is an ass of the highest caliber, but come on. It was only a few years ago when we had Stom Thurmund being praised for his stance against the "nigger race" by Trent Lott. THAT is racism. This is not.

LA: I think that Rove's use of "capped" comes more along common mainstream (ala white) usage meaning "topped off". I really doubt that Rove had any intention of speaking to street urchins or gangsters, I'm sure in fact he figures they would be the last of his possible audience.

The adjectives "lazy, conniving, bluffing his way through, pick-up basketball, trash talking" all mean something quite different to certain segment of the population when given as chosen terms associated with a brown face. Whether or not Rove was aware of these associations, or simply has revealed his own racial biases, of which I'm sure he has many, we can only guess at. I think a large part of the Republican's success in galvanizing the race-baiters and the woman haters is that they actually share the same views and predjudices yet know also how hide that in public - somewhat. The dog whistle can't be there if they don't know where to find it or how to use it.

That said, ironically I thought his treatment of H.Clinton was balanced and fair, for once. God, talk about getting a prize from the devil! Makes one wonder actually, if nicing up H. Clinton is indeed their game plan.

Which then begs the question, if he knows to treat H.C. decently, then he should know the same for Obama, so maybe it is quite intentional.

It's not how we (Dems) take Rove's assertion about lazy. It's how his audience takes it. The WSJ editorial page eats this stuff up and then when anyone takes issue with it, they are deemed "racist." And this from a man who served one of the laziest men in American History.

I think Rove is in his own little world. He no longer understands the electorate which is why he completely misread the 2006 election sweep. Rove is an elitist who wants to keep the Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton dynamic in place, becuase that is the political world he understands. He can't process Obama type politics and it's an enviroment where guys like him won't prosper. If HRC is President, or the nominee, he will be in high demand as a consultant.

Karl Rove and Mark Penn employing similar tactics? Hmmm...

is it possible to find racist comments where there is none? maybe its racist to see racism in his comments...

He's definitely not advising him, but you're close to discovering the more important truth: the Clinton and Bush families play politics the same way: they play for keeps, and they play to win. We now scoff at someone like Obama who tries to uplift our politics to a different place. After 20 years + of these families, we're a pretty cynical bunch.

You got that right.

Here's the other rock to turn over. We know that the Clintons want to get that presidential power back so badly they'll do just about anything. We know the Bushes want to keep power so badly that they will do anything to keep it.

Put those two facts together with how chummy Billy Boy and Bush Sr. have gotten over the last few years and it feels pretty creepy. Any citizen who isn't pulling down 6 figures or better and is supporting Hillary is about as clever as a chicken supporting Col Saunders for President

That didn't explain a thing. Calling someone lazy is not a racist remark. Like I said, Fred Thompson has been called lazy since day one. It's quite a reach.

Ok. If I can't help you understand the obvious then I give up.

John, you have entirely read into Rove's statements content which is not there. It's turdfucker afterall, no need to exaggerate his sins. This misread or sensationalization happens here once in a while; please be more careful.

BTW, someone at C&L still owes Garret Anderson an apology.

Why is it when the subject of racism comes up, instead of taking it seriously, we get 'progressive' commentors dead set to prove that no such beast exists, no matter the historical context of Rove's remarks (as well as the sheer number of them) down to accusing anyone who notices it of being a racist for noticing?

This election season is both historic in the sense that we have, potentially, a woman and a black male candidate for president for the first time ever (Geraldine Ferraro was a vp candidate) and that this is the first time a woman has ever won a presidential primary. It is very little wonder that the influx of Dixiecrat-style thinkers in the Repubs have revealed their inner sexists and racists, but I am agonized, but not surprised, to find that some of us are getting in touch with our inner Dixiecrats.

For the first time ever, folks, we can actually be the nation of equal opportunity and I will be very ashamed to think that we have been making the promise of equality and meant some time later, indefinitely. I am confident that any of the Democratic candidates still running are capable of dealing with the Bush fallout, albeit differently, and we do them no favors by refusing to acknowledge the cancers Rove's argument reminds us are still a HUGE part of the American landscape.

So Karl thinks this so it must mean that.

Who cares what the turdbreath thinks? Who cares what Willy Kristol thinks?

Everyone should run their own campaigns and screw what the Republican brain trust thinks.

Greg@11 .....By calling him" lazy".....he is by implication calling himself a racist.A long time ago one of the stereotypes that was attached to Black People was that they were "lazy".It's an old way of thinking...and everthing else he said ...reeks of the "Old way of Thinking"...again....this is his reality..he's stuck there..and he's not trying to get out of it.

Rove is a pig. His hatred for the Clintons is legendary. Any thought that they are in collusion is nauseating.

hareli @ 87:

That's been the game plan all along. But they are hedging their bets with the other corporate owned Democratic candidate, Obama. They have to know that they are so reviled that no Repuglican stands a chance.

mouthyb @ 98:

Because its not about the historical context, but the fact that Obama himself has made a point to go out of his way to have the media watch him play basketball. At this point, I dont see how mentioning the fact that he plays basketball can possibly be considered racist. If you have a rational rebuttal to that (and not one merely to prove how much you hate the GOP), I'd like to hear/discuss it.

"The [Republicans] muddy the waters with endless canards knowing full well that the media will allow enormous amounts of time debating them instead of the issue at hand."

Exactly. Please keep repeating this point, because it's been BushCo's favorite tactic for years.

If Bushes and Clintons are all this country has to offer in the way of leadership then we are going down. I won't make another futile gesture by supporting her.

HRC is paying softball with the Dem nominees......just wait till she faces a repub........but for me I'm going Edwards. But I have to admit....IF it goes to HRC....she would crush any repub. She actually is the best candidate to take on the repug machine.......she knows them and the way they operate. They have attacked, spit on,flung so much crap at her since 92,and nothing has stuck.No....She would undoubtedly beat them at their own game.

Has nothing to do with how she "plays the game". A tremendous number of people in this country loath her. No other democratic candidate will motivate the conservative base to contribute and get out and vote the way she will. PERIOD.

Combine that with the repukes bag of dirty tricks and you have a very strong potential for another republican presidency. I that the way the DNC wants to play it, so be it. Myself and apparently many other progressives WILL NOT VOTE FOR HILLARY.

So what are ya gonna do?..Vote Repug?...or Not Vote At All?...........either way your just shooting yourself in the foot.I know what you're gonna say about her.Your clearly one of those who loath her....so don't bother.

steveinvancouver @ 51:

Not likely.

I've heard that Bill Clinton and George Bush Senior are all pals with each other recently. This makes me very uneasy. I've read some nasty stuff about the Bush family dynasty and its ties to all sorts of murky dealings. (Bush Sr being in the CIA in the 60s and being head of the CIA in the 70s) I can't help this horrible feeling that Hillary Clinton is who they have lined up to continue the family business... makes me shiver just to think about it.

Karl Rove shouldn't be so cocksure about his coded messaging. It's not hard to get to the bottom of Rove's secret language.

We can all play his little game, now, can't we?

Karl Rove is a dingle ball on the hair ass of humanity. What a load this piece of
shit is.

From the Article:

"Despite Sen. Harry Reid's son serving as her Nevada chairman, she's likely to lose that state's caucuses on Jan. 19. Then comes South Carolina on Jan. 26, where half the Democratic voters are likely to be African-American and Mr. Obama the probable victor."

Yeah, cos black voters don't make an intelligent decision based on who makes the best cadidate, they just vote for the one that has the same colour skin as them, right?

He's trying to reinforce old fashioned stereotypes because the old play book works in favour of Republicans. Us and Them. Good vs Evil. Freedom vs Terror. Dem vs Republicans.

I could write an op-ed stereotyping Miss Piggy (as he is known in some parts of Dallas) oh I mean Rove, but I am too nice, and I do not like using stereotypes that might offend any part of the rainbow. I mean some would say he's family! ; ). Even if Larry Flynt gets some one to speak up and do a Trent Lott Faux News would just stick an D next to his name instead of an R (like they did Foley). I believe that Foley btw, is in a whole different category then Ms. Piggy I mean Rove!

belock @ 10:

I don't understand this post. Obama has made a point to play basketball for (and often with) the media on a number of occasions already. This has been documented rather well, and I know personally that Obama is an avid ballplayer. How can referencing his ballplaying possibly be considered racist? I mean, Jesus, I would hate to imagine Obama ever actually eating a single piece of fried chicken or whatever other stereotypes you might think up because then he would be quite the racist himself... under your strange logic at least.

The amusing rant of racists is their attempt to pretend it's not racist. What? What? I didn't mean anything racist. Everyone knows Obama plays basketball when he's not snorting and selling drugs or taking a nap. And we all believe you, you didn't mean it in a bad way, just stating facts, right?

Modus Operandi: divide, reduce, obfuscate, and work the edges toward the middle.

Tactic: Use your own weakness against your opponent (if you’re a liar, accuse your opponent of dishonesty; if you’re an idiot, accuse your opponent of stupidity). This has become so ignominious that it’s now seen as mostly projection.

Result: There is no middle-ground. Whatever may be universally understood becomes muddied, and those that don’t understand become empowered (i.e. belief trumps rational thought, gut feelings are on par with logic – and beliefs and gut feelings can be easily manipulated).

Reason d’être: The fringe becomes a powerful lobby who will vote in lock-step en-mass.

He doesn't respect women. He's good for a laugh, and a good entertainer. He's married to a white girl but the black girl (Condi) always has his back. And well, he can't be trusted!

I'm prepared to get hazed for this, but... I keep reading about Rove (and Clinton) and the whole racism theme, but I wonder if many aren't seeing the forest for the trees.

That is, the Clinton camp is using precisely the same tactics (and, more than occasionally, messages) that Rove himself has been putting forth is ways large & small since the very beginning of the campaign.

If that weren't enough, I am left taking Sen. Clinton's remarks on MTP at face value and wondering why she'd return to the same pre-NH messaging about war & leadership (nee experience)? If her claim be true -- that she voted for inspections, then internally protested the invasion -- I am quite disturbed that a person of her stature, experience and general clout remained so utterly silent. This, compared to the inexperienced Sen. Obama who was more than vocal in his opposition.

Apologies for the rant, but I feel this needs to be aired out, especially the Rove-Clinton gambit.

No mention in the op-ed of a "fence around his heart" or anything like that (I don't know where Amato got that quote). No mention of his race or of anything close to it, and I’m afraid Harvard buddies don’t count as “homies”.

Obama is a little prone to bluffing his way through, like when he said, “I think it would be a profound mistake for us to use nuclear weapons in any circumstance,” he said, pausing before he added, “involving civilians.”

If you called Bush tongue-tied, would you be stereotyping him as a Texan? If you speak negatively of Clinton’s recent show of emotion, are you stereotyping her as a woman?

Rove simply pointed out problems with Obama, not with his entire race. Rove may be fanatical, but he’s too smart to lay his reputation on the line by saying what Amato thinks he said.
