McCain is dazed and confused on Education

Wow, check out this clip. McCain is so confused about an education question that Mel Martinez and Lieberman had to step in and answer it for him. Simply pathetic. They were pretty clueless too. (h/t Open Left)

Lieberman: You know a lot of candidates can give you a good answer on education or on health care or on any of the other things that you worry about....You gotta have a president that's going to pull people in both parties together and say OK, you're a Democrat, I'm a Republican, but do you know what's more important? We're Americans and we have a responsibility to deliver to the American people..

icon Download | play icon Download | play

Lieberman goes so far as to say that it's not how a candidate answers a question about an important topic of concern for voters, but that he'll break the partisan wall. WTF? That's the best that he can do? Forget the issues. Who needs to know. McCain looks confused as he looks into the crowd.

I don't think that is the only thing McCain is "dazed and confused" about. Same goes for Lieberman, wow.

Well Obama would certainly agree with Lieberman. Maybe the two of them can bring Perot on board to tinker under the hood and Bush to be the "uniter and not a divider." Now wouldn't they make a peachy keen group.

Poor Grandpa John did look confused. "Why am I here? Is it time for lunch?" Lieberman wants to be veep for McCain. He probably knows this is his last term as senator.

Whew, glad to see the site back up, even if it doesn't recognize me in the comments. I had to fill in my infor.

I saw this event live on tv when it happened and I truly did say out loud, WTF?

First off I have no love for any of these guys but here's the thing. I don't want a candidate that has all these "my way is the right way" answers. I would vote for the guy that does not have a "blueprint" to fix everything, I would want a guy that says...

"I don't know how best to fix things but I will find out from the real experts on the subject and he can tell me how to do it. Then I would use my authority to get it done."

That is the sign of a true leader, a guy who finds the right people and then leads.

Btw, if anyone's interested, I'll be live-blogging the SOTU Address. I don't want to give away the surprise but let's just say that because this is supposed to be Bush's last this yea's live-blogging will be themed.

Respect is earned not granted, that is true. However, in the same sense that actions are needed to gain it (respect)... actions can also remove it.

Whatever respect McCain had requested for his service in the US Navy have long been overshadowed by his actions as a US senator, and political candidate.

In any case, I guess that at least we show far more respect to this turd of a human being, than most right wingers showed for Kerry in 2004. One good turn deserves another, I say. However, I am sure that liberals have far more class and compassion and I doubt that if McCain was to be the GOP candidate, you will see any "Hanoi Hilton Rocks" tshirts at the democratic convention. Saint McCain surely took his time to come against the swift boaters, and he surely though those purple hear band aids were mighty funny during the GOP convention.

So Mr. McCain is going to have to try harder to earn my respect, getting shot down can only give you so much benefit of the doubt.

oldgringo's picture

I will be very surprised if McCain holds together physically and/or mentally all the way through the convention..
Even if he does, the strain of the run up to the election will more than likely take him down.....With Lieberman, we should be so lucky....

mudshark's picture

but getting back to McCain........he new he was going to need help out there..........that right there disqualifies him.

LIEberman is wrong. We need MORE partisanship, not less. We need it from Democrats, who have failed to comprehend that the Republican standard operating procedure is to bait the Democrats into working with them, then take and take and take, but never give.

What's the compromise between Democrats who think abortion should be safe, legal and rare versus Republicans who think summary execution of doctors who provide reproductive health services is acceptable?

What's the compromise between Democrats who think Social Security should be a government run old age pension and catastrophic insurance plan, and Republicans who want to use that money to enrich speculating investment bankers and stock brokers while impoverishing senior citizens?

What's the compromise between Democrats who want to leave Iraq and know we never should have invaded in the first place, and Republicans who think staying there for another hundred years is OK, and who can be counted on to ALWAYS, ALWAYS tell us everything in Iraq is "great," and that if we stay just six more months (and six more months, and six more months, and six more months), they KNOW everything will be better.

What's the compromise between Democrats who like the Constitution and the written law, and the Bush administration and its enablers, who believe warrantless wiretapping and searches and detentions are acceptable, and that the Geneva conventions are "quaint?"

What's the compromise between Democrats who want to track down and kill Osama bin Laden, and Republicans who "just don't spend that much time thinking about him?"

What's the compromise between Democrats who appreciate the rule of law and Republicans who will rig elections and use the power of the prosecutor to jail Democratic candidates they regard as election day threats?

LIEberman wants compromise with Bush and his enablers? First let them acknowledge their wrongdoing. Let them be impeached and tried. Let them be convicted. Let them be punished. No truth, no acceptance of responsibility? Fine, then no reconciliation, and NO COMPROMISE!

Of course a lot of the criticism directed toward McCain, regarding bringing together both parties and thinking that will trump actual hard facts on topics, can also be directed toward Obama; who often rattles on about "change" and uniting parties but doesn't often articulate his positions. Shelby Steele's new book about Obama goes in depth on this issue.

I wasn't old enough to vote in the past two elections and have always wondered why people thought Al Gore's campaign was boring, especially since I found him entertaining in an Inconvenient Truth.

McCain/Liebermann could pose a big threat. I can just hear the Unity 08 people supporting them while Lou Dobbs talks non-stop that Independents are finally going to run the country thanks to him. How is it possible to take everything bad about the Republicans and incorporate it into one candidate?

They took a 48% "mandate," and shoved a huge pile of fascist shit down the rest of our throats. right wing hater's picture

That's the whole problem.....

You see the corporatists, right wingnuts, free marketist fairytale believers believe that life in general is a race, a competition between having & not having.

You're not 'successful' in life unless you have everything. Do you ever wonder why you see so many commercials about cars & other items that the majority of the public could never afford? Why tv shows & news reports always focus on extravagance & pompous aristocrats/socialites...meanwhile corporate board members/executives get a pass unless they're under indictment???

EDUCATION IS COLLABORATIVE ____ NOT COMPETITITVE. Its a group of people that have FORSAKEN financial gains, to do something THEY TRULY LOVE TO DO. NO TEACHER DOES IT FOR THE MONEY.

EDUCATION SHOULD NEVER, EVER BE A BUSINESS. IN A CIVIL SOCEITY - IT SHOULD BE A RIGHT, NOT A 'PRIVELEGE'. IT PROVIDES A SOCIAL FUNCTION, SO THAT CITIZENS CAN BE 'USEFUL' (to take a corporatist word) MEMBERS OF SOCIETY, CONTRIBUTORS TO THE COUNTRY, THE WORLD.

NCLB should be blown out of existence. Its been perverted by Republicans/Libertarians as a way to destroy publicly funded education. VOUCHERS are BS, CHARTER SCHOOLS are BS..... CHILDREN aren't COOKIES waiting to BE CUT IN THE SAME MOLD. GENETICALLY IMPOSSIBLE, not all children WANT to go to college, THEY MUST HAVE other options...

Instead of spending 643 Billion on Defense MORE THAN THE COMBINED AMOUNT OF THE REST OF THE WORLD/OR THE NEXT 10 COUNTRIES COMBINED TIMES TWO....spend half of that on education...and fix the funding discrepancies in urban areas, bring back after school programs, worker programs, technical school options, etc.

Look at the Japanese/German systems....not privatized, but publicly & fully funded with lots of options so that their next generations will keep their country moving ahead...
