Minority leader, John Boehner and the House Republicans walked out of Congress today because the Democratic Party wanted to enforce the rule of law and go after Hariet Miers and Josh Bolton, while the Republicans want to force the FISA bill down their throats.

They threw their hissy fit (I'm surprised Boehner didn't break out into tears again) and as usual tried to change the subject from the lawbreaking Bush administration to the jingoistic---save America from terrorists-rhetoric that they are famous for. This is their play. Make the House and Senate into a do nothing Congress---grand stand on every issue so they can try to dupe the media...

That damn FISA court approves whatever the President wants anyway, so why would Boner get so upset over that? Um, political grandstanding. The whole basis of the FISA court was an attack on the fourth amendment. So, now Bush wants to further kill the constitution. If the dems had any guts they would fight to abolish FISA courts altogether, but what have they done - work with the President and big business.
I just wish while the children were not their we could have pushed stuff through. When they were gone we should have did a voice vote on impeaching the gang of criminals in the white house, repealing the Bush tax cuts, setting a time table on iraq withdrawal and stuff like that.
The right is right when they say the left is full of pansy poet socialist. We talk and talk, yet never do. Look at what Newt did to Clinton. Why aren't we doing that to Bush? I really am getting sick of nancy and reid.

You should have heard some of the repubs later on the floor of the House. They were ranting and raving about how dangerous it is going to be for all of us because the Protect America act, or whatever the hell the bill is called that protects telecoms, isn't getting passed. One of them went so far as to say we disarming and all the terrorist must be excited as they make their plans to attack us. It was such theater. Bad theater, but theater none the less. One said FISA was cumbersome. One said FISA would expire. Then one stood up and talked about the murder of thousands of babies because of abortion on demand. I guess that one didn't get the memo.

Given a rule change put into effect last night, yes, they could. But they didn't. They only passed the resolution on enforcing contempt citations against Bolten and Miers.
What John's leader doesn't mention is the total BS move pulled by a Republican while everyone was at the memorial for Lantos. He moved for adjournment, forcing everyone to walk out of the memorial to come back to vote. It was after this move failed that Bonehead led the walk-out.
More seriously, the real question is whether the House is really going to go on recess without passing anything on the PAA. As of now, it's set to expire and there's nothing pending to stop this.

Not only has the FISA court approved just about everything put in front of it, they can also retroactively approve surveillance. If there is some immediate threat to National security, Dubya can order surveillance without a warrant, then go to the court later and explain why the surveillance was necessary and have the court approve it. There is no need to expand executive power because he has all the authority he needs to do what is necessary to protect the country, unless, of course, he plans on monitoring everyone without any reason to do so.
Maybe he should re-read the CONSTITUTION.

The Democrats in congress have staged scores of political boners in order to try to embarass President Bush and the only reason they've done it is to play politics and get back at the eight years of embarassments caused their party by President Clinton. It would have happened whether it was President Bush or any other Republican who may have been elected President. They were out for revenge, plain and simple. As to the FISA law, ensuring its perpetuation should be a Republican AND Democrat issue because it is an American issue.
They walked out. Good. It'll be a nice walkthrough for when they get thrown out in November.

So the conference committee will meet on FISA, and immunity has been rebuked again by the House.

Yesterday, the majority leader said that this political stunt would occur today because we have space on the House schedule. In other words, we have space on the calendar today for a politically charged fishing expedition, but no space for a bill that would protect the American people from terrorists who want to kill us.

I'm sorry, but Congress was already doing a bang-up job of being a bunch of do-nothings. The Senate's recent acquiescence to Bush's demands for telco immunity illustrates that point.
